Hi, I just wanted to drop by to say that I adore your nature posts, they're so serene and calming to look at. Being born and raised in southern Germany, Pennsylvania and its forests and meadows were not at all something that came to my mind when thinking about the beauty of nature, mainly because that part of the world just hadn't come to my attention yet. Your wonderful pictures changed that - your blog is a gem. Thank you! 🥰
Thank you for this! Interesting that you are from southern Germany. The people who took over the land in this region after the indigenous people were unfairly killed or pushed out in the early 1700s were from southern Germany and it was their farming practices who gave the landscapes here the beautiful look they have. The meadows, the fields, the ponds, the rows of trees and woodlots were all a result of their husbandry. Some of their descendants still live on that land although the increasing prices of land, driven by how close it is to New York City and Philadelphia, is driving them out. Their parents and grandparents still spoke a form of German and I have known many people who spoke it. Many thanks for your kind and encouraging words. I love these places and I am pleased when some part of the magic these landscapes hold for me reaches through the pictures to the people who see them.

Research is Devotion Friends!!
Hey, like, literally just make a playlist. Of all your favorite witchy songs. Anything. Even if they’re non witchy, anything that makes you think of your practice. Play it, and research your practice. Anything that relates to it. Deities, history, metaphysical shops nearby, Pinterest boards, my tumblr posts ;), folklore, the history of witchcraft in your area, paganism in different cultures, different pantheons. Literally anything. You spending time with your practice in any way or form can be considered your devotion. Some people don’t have the space or safety. Plus it’s fun to learn new things.
If you feel like you have nothing to research, look into Pennsylvanian Pow wowing, or Braucherei. Literally almost all of my ancestors did it. It saved my aunts life. Totally super cool stuff.

apologies is this has already been answered but i know a small amount of a German dialect spoken by my grandmother. as far as i can tell, the only people left who speak it fluently are all older adults and live in a handful of small towns in Iowa in America.
id love to attempt to blog in it, but im worried i dont know enough to do so, and that i would have trouble looking words up that i dont know since there aren't many native speakers left. also, i dont think spelling was ever standardized at all.
are there any ideas or strategies you know of that i could use to help in this situation?
Hi, you mentioned in your tags that it's a form of High German? Well, Pennsylvania Dutch is apparently a fairly common form of High German spoken in the region. Maybe looking that up could help you? The wikipedia has lots of information and references on it! And here's a dictionary for it.
It might not be exactly what your grandmother spoke, but it might help get a feel of it and help you find a way of spelling it :)
And don't worry too much about it being 'correct'. You can always add a transcription of what you said in English for clarity. It would be neat to see it either way, even if it's just a few words!
Glicke! (good luck!)

I am excited to share that my original artwork ‘Witches’ Night on Hexenkopf Rock’ is featured in the third edition of Ned D. Heindel’s ‘Hexenkopf: History, Healing, & Hexeri’! You can grab a copy for yourself from The Sigal Museum. It is an honor to be included in such a wonderful book that preserves a part of Pennsylvanian history and the history of Pennsylvanian folk magic!
In 2016, I unearthed a rare copy of the first edition of this book (published under a slightly different title in 1974, seen in the third photo) at my grandmother’s house and it is what inspired me to create ‘Witches’ Night on Hexenkopf Rock.’
The rock itself is a stony summit in Williams Township, PA that has long been associated with magic, ritual, and witchcraft. ‘Hexenkopf: History, Healing, and Hexeri’ takes an in-depth view at the history and folklore surrounding Hexenkopf Rock and examines how Braucherei, or PA German folk magic, first developed in the area and contributed to the rock’s legends. Also discussed are stories of Native American magic, witch gatherings, ominous omens, and apparitions that have helped bolster Hexenkopf rock’s mysterious reputation. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in American folk magic and Pennsylvanian lore!

Every so often I'm possessed by a little German boy who craves German food so I'm making pork and sauerkraut. My mom loaned me her slow cooker because all the recipes require it. I wasn't smelling much food cooking smells and the slow cooker is old so I opened the lid and sniffed to make sure I could smell things cooking. I breathed in a ton of sauerkraut steam and it made my throat hurt.

Homesick Vent I guess
So I was born and raised in one of the Appalachian Valleys but around 9 months ago moved a bit farther south to be with my lovely partner with a bit more affordable rent so we could save up money and eventually move back up to our home region. But this last weekend we took a vacation back home for my birthday, visiting some friends as well.
Basically getting to see even the outskirts of Appalachia and the valley again was really god damn nice. And now that I'm back to my place down south I'm realizing just how homesick I am. Southern coast swamps are pretty and all but god I miss the mountains. I miss my culture, the blue collar folk I grew up around and that my ma came from. I miss hiking on mountain trails and watching deer run through my backyard and the way my boots felt against trail dirt and gravel roads rather than wet humid mud.
I miss Coyotes and creek fishing and drinking beer by the turkey hill just a quick walk away from a forest. Miss the accents and banjo music and I even miss those shitty mountain churches that I'd never set foot in again. I miss walking out into the woods with my friends and finding old crumbling buildings and railroad tracks that would lead to bridges over offshoots of the Susquehanna.
I miss the little one road town I went to college at and the bookstore with the pride flag always up and the pub where I'd watch frat boys play pool and wish I had a bunch of lesbians to play with. I miss the ways mist would roll in from the river around the mountains in the early morning and it would look like something out of Middle Earth, and the way power lines cut through the hills like scars.
I just miss Appalachia. I miss my home.

God I’m constantly blown away by the concept of translation. The fact that so many languages are spoken in this world but there is an entire art to making them mean the same thing and that the art comes from going the step further from literal translation into giving it the right flow for whatever given language it’s being translated into. And how maybe the exact wording and phrasing and idiom changes, but the broad strokes and meaning are unchanged.
Like you’re telling me that’s not magic? Enchantment? Alchemy? Get outta here

Fried Cabbage and Apples
Fried Cabbage and Apples
This is so simple, a recipe hardly seems necessary, but on the other hand, perhaps this will remind you of this side dish, estimably suited for fall and winter when the cabbage and apples are the best sorts of things to store from harvest until wanted for the table.  Even if you aren’t a farmwife with a root cellar, cabbage is inexpensive enough, and this is an excellent recipe for that apple or…
