When betta fish are sold in tiny cups, many people assume that they do well in small spaces with minimal maintenance or equipment such as heaters or filters.
Tiny betta fish aquariums can only be profitable if consumers misunderstand the needs of betta fish.
Manufacturers like Aqueon, Marina, Penn-Plax Pet Products, and others are still making tiny betta kits -- some as low as 0.25 gal.
These companies are making money off of the suffering of bettas; they are profiting from the misconceptions that they perpetuate.
Betta fish are resilient and are capable of surviving in low-quality conditions.
Bettas should have an aquarium that is a minimum of five gallons, a heater, filter, and lots of plants and hiding spaces to create a stimulating environment.
Please sign the petition asking Aqueon to discontinue its under one gallon betta fish aquariums:

Why is Target selling this 0.5 gallon "aquarium"?
Target is promoting harmful pet products and misleading consumers. The 0.5 gallon Nature's Aquaponic by Penn-Plax is not a "healthy environment" for betta fish.
There's no space for bettas to swim, nor is there room for a filter and heater. Toxins accumulate rapidly in the low water volume, but the marketing of this tank gives people the (wrong) impression that the plants alone will sufficiently filter the water.
Will Target discontinue its sale of under one gallon betta fish tanks?
Target currently lists four under one gallon tanks on its website (all by Penn-Plax): 0.5 gal Nature's Aquaponic, 0.7 gal 3-1 Betta kit, 0.7 gal SpongeBob kit, and 0.7 gal Finding Dory kit.
Bettas need 5+ gal, a filter, heater, and lots of environmental enrichment like plants and hiding spots.

The filter came in yesterday and it was easier to set up than I thought so instead of wiating for the weekend I just went ahrad and set it up. So far so good! Added more ceramic media, about a half-basket full, put in all the ceramic media from the old tanj, and included the less saturated polyfill from the old tank to help seed the new media. I left the coarse spong it came with in there and one of the fine filter pads. It came with three more fine filter pads and a bag of carbon, but I put those three filter pads away for now to replace this one when it gets too bad.
Had to turn down the flow a little bit. Its hard to positon outflows on this tank, its 36 inches long but only 14 inches wide i think? I like having one on the short end to go the length of the tank but I didnt think it would work well, so I put the spray bar across the back and pointed them forwards. Its buffeting the pennywort around tho, so I may try to do the short end instead. We'll see.

Intro Post / About Me
Hi there!
Please call me Grant. I'm 21 and use he/they primarily.
I am autistic and adhd, and my special interest is old hamster cages, especially connectable ones!
I am really interested in collecting vintage cages, I currently have a very poor Habitrail Deluxe Habitat that looks to be from the 70's, as well as a S.A.M. habitat dated somewhere in the 90's (Don't have it by me right now to check). I'm always interested in acquiring vintage cages, if you see any up for sale feel free to send me a link! I will at least love to collect the images for my blog! I apologize if my posts are mostly uninteresting, but feel free to send a PM if you either have a rodent care question (I'm well versed in modern hamster, gerbil, mouse, and African Pygmy Dormouse care, as well as rabbit care). If you have any questions about old cages though, also feel free to send an ask! If you have a memory of a distinct cage you had or saw before, try to describe it to me and we can try to find it together!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a canister filter for a 55g freshwater aquarium? I’ve been chasing a leak on my year-old Polar Aurora for a month (no warranty, natch) and am fed up. I liked this filter for its self-priming, but the leak is driving me nuts.
(Yes, I’ve replaced the gaskets and cleaned the motor bits. I’ve done everything the internet says and I’m still getting drips.)
I had an Eheim and didn’t feel like the flow was sufficient. The Polar Aurora was a replacement for my old workhorse Penn-Plax Cascade, but the Cascade is expensive and if there’s a cheaper alternative I’d love to hear it.
