Multiple people have sustained injuries, local media has said

A plane flipped upside-down on landing at Toronto Pearson International airport on Monday. At least eight people are injured, according to paramedics. All flights were suspended, the Toronto Star wrote. Videos posted on X show a Delta Air Lines plane overturned on a snow-covered tarmac, with people walking away from it. One of those injured is in critical condition, according to Peel Regional Paramedic Services Supervisor Lawrence Saindon.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford intends to break apart Peel Region within three years, CBC Toronto has learned from a source not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The news was first reported Wednesday evening by The Toronto Star.

According to the source, there will be questions around costs.

Another source told CBC Toronto that the decision was approved by cabinet on Wednesday.

Peel Region is made up of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. The region is responsible for services such as paramedics, health programs and recycling in the three municipalities. [...]

An early morning fire that ripped through a house in Brampton Monday has left a young family with three children dead and another adult in critical condition.

Neighbors and family members identified those lost. The parents were Nazir Ali and Raven Alisha Ali O'dea, CBC News confirmed, and their children were Alia Marilyn Ali O'dea, Jayden Prince Ali O'dea and Layla Rose Ali O'dea.

Their deaths have left the community devastated. Our hearts are absolutely breaking, said Brampton Fire Chief Bill Boyes. What happened here today, to lose three children and two adults, with one additional person in life-threatening condition, it's absolutely tragic.

Boyes said fire crews were met with heavy smoke and flames when they arrived on the scene of the fire at Conestoga Drive and Sutter Avenue at approximately 2 a.m.

The three-alarm fire made for a difficult entry for crews upon arrival, Boyes said. Two of the children were rushed by paramedics to the hospital in life-threatening condition and died shortly after, Peel police Const. Heather Cannon told reporters at the scene.

Firefighters risked their lives to get these people out of this fire, Boyes said, noting that mental health services would be made available to the firefighters.

Unfortunately, it was a terrible outcome. One adult was able to get out of the house and was taken to a trauma centre in critical condition.

According to Boyes, two other adults left the house through the basement without being injured. John Lambe, who lives in the area, said he would say hello to the family when he saw them as their deaths have affected many in the quiet Brampton neighbourhood.

It's heartbreaking to hear what's happening here today. It's going to hit this neighbourhood pretty hard, residents said. Condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends who have been affected by this devastating fire on Conestoga Dr in Brampton. Also grateful for the tireless efforts of our first responders who faced challenging conditions, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said in a tweet Monday morning.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also extended his condolences at an announcement on child-care in Brampton. I want to express just how sad I was to learn of the tragic deaths in a family here in Peel, including the loss of three precious children, Ford said Monday morning.

"I really can't imagine the hurt experienced by the family and friends and the entire community. You'll be all in our prayers." Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was with Ford, said his thoughts were with the family and friends of those who died.

He said that we are all thinking about this terrible, heartbreaking fire. Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie also said she was heartbroken to learn about the fire.

Boyes said firefighters were working to eliminate hotspots in the home on Monday morning before an investigation into the cause of the deadly fire could begin.

Investigations are underway in collaboration with the Office of the Fire Marshal, Peel Regional Police and Brampton fire investigators noted.

Boyes urged the public to follow fire safety procedures. If you're at home, check your smoke alarms. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm. Ensure your family, friends, and anyone who lives with you know what to do in the event of a fire, he said.

Our goal is to prevent another tragic fire from occurring in Brampton or across Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he is in favour of granting Mississauga and Brampton their independence from Peel Region — a move that would fulfill the long-standing wishes of some politicians, and pave the way for a messy divorce.

At a news conference in Mississauga on Monday morning, Ford said he had “always been for an independent Mississauga,” suggesting that he is ready to split the municipalities apart.

That move could be finalized as long as both cities can work out the financial details over shared assets, infrastructure and the future costs for police, paramedics and other shared services.

It is unclear what this would mean for the Town of Caledon. The three municipalities of Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon make up the Region of Peel.

Splitting the three would likely spell the end of the Region of Peel.
