TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration has blocked a new Advanced Placement course on African American studies from being taught in high schools, saying it violates state law and is historically inaccurate.
The state education department rejected the program in a letter last week to the College Board, which oversees AP classes.
Florida education officials did not specify exactly what content the state found objectionable but said, “As presented, the content of this course is inexplicably contrary to Florida law and significantly lacks educational value.”
“In the future, should College Board be willing to come back to the table with lawful, historically accurate content, (the education department) will always be willing to reopen the discussion," the letter continued.
In a statement, the College Board said, “Like all new AP courses, AP African American Studies is undergoing a rigorous, multi-year pilot phase, collecting feedback from teachers, students, scholars and policymakers.”
“The process of piloting and revising course frameworks is a standard part of any new AP course, and frameworks often change significantly as a result,” the statement read.
The College Board website describes the course as interdisciplinary, touching on literature, arts, humanities, political science, geography and science. The pilot program is debuting at 60 schools across the country before it expands to additional schools. The organization has been working on constructing the course for more than a decade, according to its website.
DeSantis, a potential 2024 GOP presidential candidate, has opposed what he calls liberal ideologies in schools, including lessons around critical race theory, which examines systemic racism and has become a frequent target of conservatives.
Last year the governor signed legislation dubbed the Stop WOKE Act that restricts certain race-based conversations and analysis in schools and businesses. The law bars instruction that says members of one race are inherently racist or should feel guilt for past actions committed by others of the same race, among other things.
More recently the governor's budget office called on state colleges to submit spending information on programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion and critical race theory, raising concerns of potential funding cuts around such initiatives.
Sharon Courtney, a high school teacher in Peekskill, New York teaching the African American studies course, said her students were "shocked" to learn Florida blocked the class. She described it as a factual African history course that also details what Africans experienced upon their arrival in North America.
“There’s nothing objectionable, it's history that hasn’t been traditionally taught in the United States in a K through 12 setting,” she said, “but it's also history that once known and understood could change race relations and improve them.”

Voices from the Balcony, part 2
Luke and Hagar Nicklson: a Black Revolutionary War Soldier and his Wife
Since learning (and seeing with my own eyes) that there were rough, uncomfortable pews set specifically apart for people of color in the balcony of the 1757 Harpswell, Maine, meetinghouse, I have been trying to learn the names of the people who sat in those pews. It has been challenging, but I have made some discoveries in the past few weeks.
(above, rough-hewn balcony pews in the Harpswell Meetinghouse)
After some digging, I was able to access a typescript copy of the church’s records. The issue with transcribed copies of original documents is that the reader doesn’t know what information has been left out by the transcriber. But I dug into the copied records anyway.
(above, Harpswell Meetinghouse)
One church record caught my eye. It was for the marriage of Luke Nickerson to Hagar Cozens on November 12, 1772. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Samuel Eaton, the pastor of the Harpswell meetinghouse. The woman’s name, Hagar, was one often given to enslaved women of African descent in 18th-century New England. I felt I should research this family.
I was amazed by what I found. Not only were Luke and Hagar Nickerson people of color and Harpswell residents, but I learned that Luke was a Revolutionary War soldier. More than likely, when Luke and Hagar Nicklson attended church at the Harpswell meetinghouse, they would have had to sit on the benches set apart for people of color in the northwestern corner of the balcony.
When Luke was an elderly man, he applied for a military pension from the United States government (pension file S37270, which can be accessed via subscription at ancestry dot com). He was granted the pension, and his application files can help us understand what his experience in the military was like. (N.B.: It’s worth mentioning that Luke’s surname seems to have been a strange source of confusion. Although Luke clearly signed his name “Nicklson” in his pension application, others seem to have misheard it consistently as “Nickerson.”)
(above, Luke Nicklson’s signature from his pension application)
Luke began his military service in early 1777 in Captain John Reed’s company, Colonel Ichabod Alden’s regiment (7th Massachusetts). He remained with the same company for his entire three years of service
In the spring of 1777, having marched with his company almost 150 miles from Harpswell to Cambridge, Massachusetts, Luke was struck down with smallpox. In the isolated community of Harpswell, he likely had never been exposed to the virus before. Deadly smallpox outbreaks were rampant in the Continental Army, weakening the troops and dramatically slowing their progress throughout the mid- to late 1770s.
Luckily, Luke recovered and was able to make the march that summer to New York: first to Peekskill, then Albany, Stillwater, and in the autumn, to Saratoga, where, his pension application reveals, he “was at the Surrender of Genrl. Burguyne’s Army and their received a wound in his thigh by a Musket Ball.” A fellow soldier from Luke’s regiment testified that Luke spent time in hospital recovering from his injury.
In 1778, an inventory of the clothing given out to men in his company shows (below) that Luke received a shirt, a pair of breeches, stockings, and a pair of shoes. Had he been wearing his torn and bloodied breeches from Saratoga all this time?
(above, inventory of clothing given out to Pvt. Luke Nicklson, 1778)
On January 15, 1780, Luke was honorably discharged and made his way back to Harpswell.
It is hard to trace Luke for the 20 years after his return from war. He was enumerated in the 1800 US Federal Census in the neighboring town of Brunswick as part of a family group of 8, though the names of his other family members are not listed. By 1820, when he applied for his military pension at age 75, his family group had telescoped down to 3.
Luke told the pension examiner he held no real estate, and when asked about his personal estate, he claimed a single cow. “I live in a small log house,” he continued, “I have no income.” Hagar, his wife, was 66, Luke reported, and though suffering from rheumatism she was “able to work some.” Despite their advanced ages, Luke and Hagar were responsible for “a small boy” named John, who was only 8 years old. It’s possible John was their grandson, though Luke didn’t reveal their relationship. “I have no other family,” he stated, with a finality that suggests a deep, unspoken loss.
On May 4, 1829, Luke Nicklson died. His grave lies in west Brunswick, Maine, on private property. In the 1930s, a veteran’s headstone was placed on his grave. Today, the current property owners carefully tend his gravesite, replacing the American flag every year. I have not yet been able to discern what happened to Hagar and John following Luke’s death.

The incredible story of Milt Ruby Rubenfeld:
Milton "Milt" Rubenfeld Was a Highly Decorated US Air Force Fighter Pilot who also Flew for the RAF, and the Israeli Haganah Air Service:
Milton was born in 1919 in the small town of Peekskill, New York. Prior to the war, he was a civilian pilot, who even served as an instructor of aerobatics at one point. As soon as Britain declared war on Germany, he decided to take part in the conflict. The RAF was accepting volunteer pilots from all over the world, as the Battle of Britain raged above the isles. Milton would fly with the RAF 420 Squadron.
It was there that Milton first experienced combat. Once the United States had joined the war, he was already an experienced fighter pilot with several dogfights stacked around his belt. But it was three years after the war ended that he made his contribution to support the many Holocaust refugees who sought to rebuild the Jewish state of Israel.
In 1948, the Haganah, which was the predecessor of the Israeli Defense Force, had set up an agency in the U.S. in hopes of recruiting experienced pilots to join the Haganah “Air Service.” Milton was approached by Hyman Shechtman, one of Haganah’s chief representatives, and asked if he would help the struggle in Israel.
Milton immediately agreed and very soon he was running transport missions in and out of Israel. To form the basis of the Israeli Air Force, he and several other pilots embarked on a course in Czechoslovakia where they were to train using Avia S-199 aircraft. The Avia was a Czech airplane roughly based on the German Messerschmitt Bf 109, but it featured a flawed design which led many of the applicants to quit the course.
Nevertheless, Rubenfeld, along with four other pilots who all had prior combat experience, managed to pass the test and adjust to the unreliable Czech aircraft.
On May 20, 1948, the five pilots reported to Ekron Air Base (now Tel Nof Airbase) in Israel. As of the declaration of independence of Israel, Milton Rubenfeld, Modi Alon, Ezer Weizman, Lou Lenart, and Eddie Cohen were the only flying staff of the Israeli Air Force. Even though they had five pilots, there were only four Avia fighter planes available, so one pilot had to stay on the ground during each mission.
At the outbreak of the Arab-Israeli war, the existence of this miniature squadron of fighters was kept secret. Their first mission was to attack an Egyptian armored column that was on its way to Tel Aviv.
Due to the lack of aircraft, Rubenfeld remained grounded during the first mission but got his chance to fly the day after. The first of the five to die was the South African pilot, Eddie Cohen. It remains unclear whether was he shot down, or his aircraft crashed due to technical issues.
Both Lenart’s and Weizman’s cannons got jammed during the flight. The Avia issue became more urgent than the invasion itself. The aircraft included defects such as the guns being unsynchronized with the propeller, and a tendency to ground loop. Weizman later commented that the main problem with the use of Avia S-199 was “the stress on the pilot. So much went wrong with the aircraft, it was nerve-wracking just climbing into one.”
Nevertheless, the mission was successful — their strafing round managed to stop the Egyptian forces, as they feared that the Israeli Air Force might have been much larger than it really was. As for Rubenfeld, he and Weizman flew the only two airworthy planes just 12 hours after the first mission.
They attacked targets near Tulkarm, in the eastern sector of the front, taking out several tanks and armored vehicles. In a dogfight with an Egyptian Spitfire, Rubenfeld’s airplane was damaged. He managed to fly back to Israeli-held territory before bailing out somewhere above the Mediterranean Sea, just next to the settlement of Kfar Vitkin.
Milton crash-landed on the water and tried to swim ashore, but was too dazed and injured to put enough strength into the effort. During the fall he had broken three ribs, had several cuts and suffered an injury to his groin. Just when he was ready to give up, a miracle happened. He simply stood up ― and as he recalled in a later interview, “the water was only up to my knees. I’d been swimming for hours in the water I could have stood up in at any time. I didn’t realize it because I was so far out. The farmers …. were shooting at me as I was coming in out of the water. They thought I was an Arab pilot.”
Since he spoke no Hebrew or Yiddish, he shouted the only thing he knew so that the Israeli farmers would recognize him:
“Shabbos, gefilte fish! Shabbos, gefilte fish!”
It’s the name of a dish usually served for Shabbat.
As for the impact that he and the other four pilots made, the Israeli leadership agreed that it was tremendous. With just four planes, Rubenfeld and the others had delayed several offensives and acquired the badly-needed time for the ground forces to prepare and re-organize.
Rubenfeld’s crash also contributed to the defense of Kfar Vitkin, as the farmers managed to salvage a machine gun from the wreckage of his aircraft and use it to protect their village.
Milton's son American comedian Paul Reubens might be more widely known for the fictional character he embodies, Pee Wee Herman.
The incredible documentary: "Above and Beyond" tells this amazing story.
This gripping documentary unfolds like The Great Escape, a true-life wartime adventure story. In 1948, as the British withdrew from Palestine, and five Arab nations prepared to invade Israel, a ragtag group of young men from around the globe volunteered to defend the new country. Called Machal, or volunteers from abroad, many were World War II veterans from the US. Because of an embargo imposed by the Truman administration, Americans risked losing their citizenship by joining the fight. Produced by Nancy Spielberg, younger sister to Steven, this film celebrates the pilots who laid the foundation for the Israeli Air Force. It combines extraordinary archival footage and interviews with scholars, survivors and their descendants. Interviewees range from Shimon Perez to Paul Reubens, whose father Milton Rubenfeld flew combat missions. The bravery of these volunteers was incredible. The only aircraft available to them were American and German jets junked after the war, constantly liable to deadly mechanical failure. Amenities were equally scarce (many had to make do with discarded Nazi flight suits.) Despite their shoddy equipment, they exercised enough skill and trickery to persuade the invaders that their small squadron posed a far bigger threat than it really did, helping turn the tide of the war.
The Giant Killer book & page honors these incredible war heroes making sure their stories of valor and sacrifice are never forgotten. God Bless our Vets!
