Eternal War Rewrite

So I'm here at long last.

My first attempt at a fanfic was Eternal War. I had to leave it halfway through because of horrible mental health and burnout, and when I returned, I figured I might as well rewrite everything.

I started from the beginning, creating new characters with better lore and journeys. I wrote the whole Knight's story, a few snippets of the others, and an in-depth Shadow of Revan. I wrote Ziost, and the five year timeskip from KOTFE Chapter 1 to 3.

But I'm here again, and it's at Eternal War book 1.

So I have a dilemma. Do I leave EW as it is, as a separate, abandoned fic, or do I rewrite all its chapters with Vajra instead of Arro? There are some changes I've made in the story, including making Vajra a lot more indignant about the war Arcann waged. Not fallen Jed levels of fury, but definitely different.

Change the original, or post a new fic?

Some opinions would be nice.

If I had a nickel for every time a character in a Starkid musical low-key insulted their spouse’s character or acted like they had no interest in them I’d have three nickels- which isn’t a lot, but it’s fun that it happened thrice.

Dark Argyle (Darkgyle) verses are flexible in terms of backstory, but you can rest assured that it’s Plad’s fault.

Generally, it’s safe to assume that Plad kept thwarting Argyle’s attempts to escape the Empire, and/or bringing him back once he escaped, and that combined with even further souring relations between them and Plad’s desperate attempts to discipline and regain control of his son...

Well Argyle hits a point where he can’t keep bending. He must either collapse, or snap.

And he chooses snap.

Well, this is new. She's known him to be a heavy drinker but for some reason, the walking insurance liability isn't doing his usual habits. Was there a reason in why Vash wasn't being his goofy self today? Not like she cared or anything but something was a little off and it didn't take a genius to figure it out.

"Oh well, I'll bite. What's troubling you? Usually you're up making chaos. Not like I want you to do that, mind you but it's a little odd. Even I can pick up on it, you know?"

i think putting thancred & urianger with koana is a sound writing choice:

koana's little character arc is largely about putting aside his pride and stoicism to trust wuk lamat and throw his support to her - a lot like thancred with ryne.

while i think saying that koana is their new adopted child is inaccurate (and a bit reductive - koana is an adult, after all), i do think that thancred and urianger's approach to koana (and his need for growth) does intentionally remind the audience that they were co-parenting a young adult prior to this. they're hands-off but encouraging to him, letting him make his own mistakes and have his own triumphs, helping him when he wants the help - similar to how they treated ryne in the eden questline. it's a nice subtle connection to their prior storylines.

a quick jerk up of her head as she heard Vash spoke, now for a brief moment full focus on the companion next to fire.

❛❛ i know. ❜❜ Meryl wanted to, it was more than enough for her. & technically most importantly Roberto didn't stop any of that either. Or maybe he accepted it wouldn't work.

❛❛ working as a journalist is not always an easy job. or the safest one. i was being prepared for this in university, even more so when i joined the agency.. ❜❜

but nothing would prepare her for the actual meeting of the Vash the Stampede. she was prepared for that crazed criminal, the caricature that presented in the articles & stories. a man who destroys cities as he wishes-

Vash was nothing like that. a gentle spirit that was more than anything unfortunate. he was a skilled gunner & a capable fighter. but he wasn't using it for malicious reasons.

to be fair, she wasn't prepared for last few days either. what happened at Jenova Rock... it felt like something that should happen across at least a month, not a matter of 2 days. Tonis was still sitting on her head. if she didn't let go, it surely would end better for him. then running into Wolfwood & being eaten by a giant worm... it felt like too much. overwhelming even for ambitious journalist. no amount of official & unofficial lectures could prepare her for the weight of everything.

but if that was what she felt after a single case like that, how much was sitting inside of him? how many of the stories were just like what happened there?

after a moment of silence she raised her eyes back to him. seems like somewhere in the train of thoughts they returned to notebook sitting in front of her knees, only few single words noted down. however she did not miss the question asked.

❛❛ because i want to. ❜❜ she might've sounded a little bit spoiled now, but it didn't matter. although she did ended up following it up with ❛❛ besides it's heavy, isn't it? it would be painful to leave someone with that alone. ❜❜ soon after.

“You... didn't have to follow me.”

The campfire illuminates the creases of a frown. The meat sits heavily in his stomach, but only one half pleasantly: Tonis likely hadn't had the same meal. Nor Rosa, nor any other lying outside the outskirts of what remains of Jeneora Rock. Folding his knees close to his chest, Vash wondered if they'd have anything to eat at all. Was partaking in a meal spitting in the face of their tragedy? — the one he wrought?

The gut-deep snores of Roberto brought Vash back, and his eyes flickered to Meryl, apology written within glistening irises.

“After, after all of that. I thought... I thought you and Roberto would head back. It would've been safer.”

They hadn't, though. Hadn't left him to deal with E.G. the Mine. Vash hadn't wanted to say it, hadn't wanted to voice it, and as soon as the inquiry abandoned his lips, he wished for nothing more than to tug it back, stomp it out like Wolfwood had his fifth cigarette of the day. He couldn't, however.

“Why?”

Chin against his dirt-speckled knees, he hadn't the -- the lack of shame to regard Meryl's eyes any longer, drawn in instead by the sputtering sparks of the fire.

Lucy: um- I thought ahead so you could more easily implant it with spores?
