The ideal beauty in ancient Egypt was a slender figure for both genders, and some older mummies have even been found to be stuffed with sawdust to create a rounded, idealised breast shape. Yet itās noted that beauty was observed not only in appearances as proven with Cleopatra, as her personality and voice was often described as her most charming trait. Makeup was not only for beauty - it was for protection and believed to have magical properties.
Makeup was used by all classes, ages and genders, however there were some minor differences. The most obvious difference between the rich and the poor would be the containers and tools used, but also the ingredients used to to create their cosmetics. Therefore it can be assumed that lower classes had makeup with less pigment, colour variation, and precision - but it did not stop them from wearing it! For example, kohl was expensive and if lower classes were to get a hold of it, they would apply it with sticks whilst the upper classes had theirs kept in ornamental boxes. Style-wise there was no difference between the classes, although noble women were known to pale their skin using creams and powders, likely because it suggested that they did not need to work outside. Cleopatra allegedly bathed in donkeyās milk to keep her skin fair (although itās important to remember that Cleopatra was of Greek decent).
Green malachite and black kohl was commonly used as eyeshadow in ancient Egypt, which has been proven to have protective properties. The technique was to apply it from lid to brow and on the lower eyelids, surrounding the eye. Galena was also used to make shades of grey. Nobility also wore eye glitter that was made from iridescent shells of beetles!
Eyeliner was black kohl or soot was drawn thick and in an almond shape and could be drawn in many patterns, be decorative or for ceremonial purposes dedicated to the gods. For this I made only two simple shapes as I couldnāt find exactly what the patterns would have looked like - but perhaps in a future update I will! The style that was most known was painting both the upper and lower lid from the corners of the eyes to the edges of the face. it it believed they used animal fat to create consistent and lasting paste. Eyebrows and eyelashes were filled in with the same ingredients.
For the cheeks they would use red ochre or hydrated iron oxide in oranges and deep reds which would stain the cheeks. Whilst there is no description exactly how it was applied on the face, when looking at the bust of Nefertiti you can see that itās applied where redness on the cheeks happens naturally, so I did the same for this set.
They also used red ochre or henna for the lips as well which would stain them deep red and dried matte. Popular colours also included orange, magenta, and blue-black. Red was especially popular during Cleopatraās rule as it was a symbol of power, and many nobility copied it. And whilst the lower classes likely did use something on their own lips, it is likely that they had less pigmented options.
Henna was used to stain the fingers and toes, as nailcare was really important. Henna was applied as colour to the nails and upper classes had their own makeup artists that worked on their nails.
Tattoos also seemed common. Dancing girls and prostitutes used to tattoo their thighs as a precaution against venereal disease in the style of the dwarf deity Bes.

Five years ago, I began putting a book togetherāa collection of my writings themed around punk music/punk subculture. They were all written between ā99 and 2014, and had previously appeared in my own zines that had since gone out of print, or other zines or online magazines that had gone out of print/gone dark; style-wise, they ran the gamut from CNF to lyric essay to music criticism. I decided to crowdfund and self-publish the book, but at that point I didnāt really know what I was doing in regards to either crowdfunding or publishing full books. The book was almost ready to go but the artist Iād commissioned never finished the cover art, and my crowdfunding campaign hadnāt been entirely successful, and I wound up not having enough money to publish it.
About a year after I realized I couldnāt do it the way Iād initially planned, the book was picked up by a small press. My plan was to buy enough author copies to fulfill the initial crowdfunded preorders, and hopefully sell even more than that. With the help of an editor, I partially rewrote some older pieces and wrote some new ones to flesh it out a bit more. They found someone to do the cover and interior art, and put up a preorder page; I got blurbs from some of my favorite writers. It was all basically ready to go. But shit happened, and the press folded, and the book was once again dead in the water. (Iām not naming the press here, because my intention here is not to call anyone out. The people involved in all that are friends of mine, and as a small press owner myself I understand that shit happens. The saddest part about that whole thing is that I donāt get to use the cover and interior art we had, because it was amazing.)
Iāve recently realized that I need to get the book out in some way, because I need to put it behind me. For one thing, I feel badly that the people who crowdfunded or preordered never received anything. For another, I just need to move on, and I canāt fully move on until I get it out into the world. So Iāve decided to self-release it. For right now, Iām only making a digital version. I know, I know, print is way better, but I donāt have the funds to print it right now, and Iām certainly not going to ask people to pre-pay for it a third time. Iāve redone it somewhatātook out some of the weaker pieces, added in some others Iāve written in the past three yearsāand Iāve used my own artwork for the interior and done the cover in a zine-y/Xerox art style. Iāve uploaded it to Payhip, for a sliding-scale, pay-what-you-want price. This way, people who already paid for it (or just canāt afford it otherwise) can download it for free, and other people who can/want to throw a few $$ my way can do that. Her words have gone from jacket to skin. We are there feeling her sexually charged reaction to Rock and Roll. We experience the sensual allure of the human body. With her we dive head first into decadence, decay, nostalgia, and hope. Her bouts of loneliness and need for community are palpable. We are bruised by the violence, the drugs, the suffering. Permanent Marks readers
I donāt know how many follow the fic and also follow me here, but if you have been, you might know things arenāt going well. For this reason Iām thinking about publishing Permanent Marks on payhip. It would beĀ āpay-what-you-whatā (starting at $1 or $2, depends on the content). If I do it, if it would include:
-Revise chapters, maybe even new content like extended scenes (ex: when genji and jesse go out) -An old drafts I had for chapter 2, which reads like a separate fic on itās own -The first version of how I wanted Jesse to find out about Hanzoās tattoo (which means half new chapter 6) -Depending on what ending I decide to go with, the ebook will have the alternative ending as a bonus -Side stories I have plan to post in the future (ex: something with genjiās soulmate) *if I publish the ebook, I wonāt post these side stories online for a while longer
*I will still continue the fic on ao3 no matter what, it just wonāt have all the extra stuff.

I drink too much, smoke too much, screw around. Iāve hurt people, been in and out of prison. Iām a bastard, a beast.
Iām a goddamn bundle of joy.
I mean, my own dad tried to kill me, what does that tell you?

Real life outside school is different. It has to be. I have to believe it. Luna the frightened unpopular girl is gone, too. Now I am the new Luna, and like the new moon I am in darkness until I reveal myself, reborn.
Hey, it sounds good in theory, all right? It gives me a plan, a purpose. I can do this. Be the new me who isnāt so shy and insecure, who doesnāt go red when someone laughs or points at her. I am good enough. I need to believe it.
Who cares if Iām not all that pretty? Iāve brains, and smarts, and I will make something of my life.
