⚠️cw: flashing lights (transition), blood
“Y/n, I’m happy to inform you that Roux confessed to assaulting you all those months ago,” he says calmly but with Hell’s fire burning in his eyes “This rat dared to hide, but I found him,” he informs you as his hand comes to smack the bleeding man over his head, making a painfilled groan escape the lithe male.
“Paul…” you approach him slowly “What will you do with him?”
He smirks and pulls out from his black-as-night jacket a gun “He shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit,” he practically purrs as he looks at you.

De Gaulle's account of his leaving France:
"General Spears... said he would accompany me. I notified Mr. Paul Reynaud, who sent me, from the secret funds, one hundred thousand francs. I begged Mr. De Margerie the speedy dispatch of the necessary passports for the passage to England to my wife and children [reader, this is the very first time he mentions them], that were at the time at Carantec. They barely made it to the last ship leaving Brest. On June 17th, at 9a.m., I boarded, in the company of general Spears and lieutenant De Courcel, the British plane that had carried me over the night before. The leaving took place without romanticism or difficulties of any kind."
Churchill's account of De Gaulle leaving France:
"[General Spears] talked to me with some anxiety about the safety of general de Gaulle. He had apparently being warned that the turn events were taking made it convenient for de Gaulle to leave France. I immediately gave my assent for the preparation of a good plan towards that end. That very morning -of the 17th- de Gaulle went to his office in Bordeaux, scheduled several meetings for the afternoon as a pretext, and then headed towards the airplane field to say goodbye to his friend Spears. They said their farewells, they shook hands, and when the plane started, de Gaulle jumped in and closed the door swiftly. The plane took off while the French police and bureaucrats watched astonished. De Gaulle was taking with him, in that small plane, the honor of France."
(Again, translation mine through Spanish mediating text, so if there's bad grammar or discrepancies with versions you might have that's why)

@dunkstein not just any politicians, but Charles de Gaulle’s sister and Paul Reynaud, the anti-Nazi French prime minister at the time of France’s capitulation, who was saved from near death by a turncoat Wehrmacht general who had fought against the French both in the Saar incursion and during the invasion, who was also the single fatal casualty on the side of the motley crew. the final days of uncle adolf’s wild ride were interesting to say the least
the battle of castle itter isn’t even an exceptional event anymore, with the state of the paramilitaries and ideological trends across every faction in the Russo-Ukrainian war there are like a dozen different hitlerite groups doing battle against one another at any given moment
#Reynaud was still right wing though#but he hurtled the lowest bar which was ‘don’t be a collaborator’#and to be clear I don’t believe this general switched sides for any reason other than saving his own ass

I finally wrote a Comte aftercare fic where the (gender-neutral) reader cleans him up after eating all the chocolate. 🥺

Meeting Comte de Reynaud on holiday
Although he is the mayor of lansquenet, he was urged to take a break by Caroline. He was so wound up for so long that it would be ideal for him to travel and loosen up.
Visiting Bruges was on your bucket list for so long. It was one of the best places to visit in Belgium.
You ended up walking into someone when visiting the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Little did you know that it was the Comte.
You apologize and it ends up turning into small talk. Mainly about the weather and the location, but his smile urged you to stay.
So you ended up accompanying him around the touristy part of Bruges.
Sampling chocolates, viewing churches, and admiring the scenery. It's nice and comfortable.
After a while the conversations get more personal and you start to talk about your goals land how your life is currently going.
You find that the Comte leads a long legacy that he was meant to bear his title with pride and also continue it.
However, by how restrained he talked about his duties. he's essentially being buried alive by upholding the expectations and the heavy workload.
Not to mention, his previous wife had left him to experience the fruits and labor of the world by herself.
Which in turn makes the Comte overwhelmed and the worst kind go chaotic blend of being sexually repressed and frustrated.
You on the other hand, have been roaming world without knowing who you want to be. You've been burned badly by your past partners and you feedlots.
A match made in heaven. (or hell depending on how you feel about it)
Regardless, the feeling are there and very strong. It's mutual too, The Comte -whom you soon come to find out prefers you to call him Paul- is a lot softer towards you and more gentle.
However, he always carries an air of professionalism. As if the very people that are in his town are there, silently watching and waiting for him to subdue to comfort.
You both know that a fling with harm yourselves more than what you want, and giving in to each other is far too great of a risk despite what your hearts yearn for.
So, you both start to put the relationship you both have to a test. You spend the rest of your time with Paul, and it's lovely, as expected.
The man is a huge gentleman and sweetheart. It makes you wonder why his first wife had left him so easily.
The trip comes and goes and you exchange addresses to be pen pals over the coming months. He had a life to return to and you still have to find yours.
As time does, it passes on and you start to pick up the shards of your shattered life with the guidance of Paul.
Then you both soon find you that he and you are two sides of the same coin. Lost, looking for someone when the lives you both uphold are complicated. As all lives are.
So, you take the greatest risk of all. Moving to the little French town and start a life there. A life potentially with Paul.
And when he found out, he knew it was time.
Time to stop hiding in his past. Time to stop living under his legacy's shadow.
You both came into the light of your own lives and bask within its warm rays.
You hold hands in the town square as you talk to him about your future together.

“Le rationnement décrété en France,” L’Ilustration Nouvelle. March 1, 1940. Page 02. --- Paris, 29 (B.U.P.)
