ᯓ★ ─── Through A Black & White Lens : A Bond Captured ( p.lupone )
ᯓ★ pairings : patti lupone • fem!reader ( what could’ve been but never occurred )
ᯓ★ summary : ⸺ IN WHICH you and she were deeply in love back in the 70s when you were both starring in something rather big together, but it never happened. Always something brewing beneath the surface. Constantly being around one another. Have insane chemistry and ease with one another. She fell in love with a woman; you. As did you, yet of course, nothing came out of it besides heartbreak and ache and yearning, and no one in the public knew about it — there are pictures from back then between you and her hugging, holding hands, being close to one another, and a bit of social media— this generation now thinks or teases 'surely they must've been something during these times, I mean look at them!', though some conformed with the idea of two women simply being platonic soulmates. Then in 1988, LuPone married, and that was that.
You've seen each other in award shows, and brief gatherings, and even spoke about one another during interviews if they brought up the well-known Broadway hit you both starred in. There was always positivity in one another's words. A warmth, a melancholy, a softness no one quite can put a finger on. You never really reached out to her, and neither did she — but you did send her flowers — her favorite ones after every single performance, giving her the notion that you were out there, somewhere in the crowd, but not exactly ready to see her face to face. Here and there sure, probably somewhere along the 2010s you went out for a drink with her, but never something occasional.
And that saddened her. Saddened you. You both had a very special, warm, and deep bond. The what if’s, but’s, could’ve’s, should’ve’s.
Who would have thought that you BOTH would be starring in the 2024 Marvel series, Agatha All Along: Coven of Chaos? Your character is as significant as Death. How due to this, the press tour, the interviews the pictures, the series, and palpable chemistry, images resurface — moments captured when you and Patti were younger — created a buzz during the press tour ( I also have one coming out between Aubrey plaza and Kathryn Hahn — capturing their mannerisms is so amazing 😭 ).
It’s not only another door opening to new Marvel characters, but a door reopening between two stars who shared an immense relationship back then. The photos, showing shared laughter, choreography sessions, and close, intimate interactions. This particular interview is set apart from Marvel. Something just for you two.
ᯓ★ things that should be mentioned : Patti LuPone is MARRIED, there’s no such thing as her cheating on her husband or anything — it’s FICTION ( inspired by intuition that I’m damn certain Ms. LuPone at some point was in love with a woman — ). I know it’s a rather different territory when it comes to real life, but there’s no inappropriate themes within here — just fiction, fun and something for you to fill in the lines with your own delusions :,>
ᯓ★ a/n : So — was it wrong for me to write a tiny something something for Patti LuPone instead of one of the characters SHE PORTRAYED? :,)) DO NOT SUE ME — I’m just a girl who’s in the sheer depths of being delusional. I’m enamored with this — I hope you all enjoy, comment what you think <33
The interviewer starts with routine questions about the project — its themes, the process, your experiences, your characters, the joys and challenges of working together again after all these years. But there’s a flicker of anticipation within the room, waiting to be ignited. You sense it, and you’re certain Patti does too. The energy transforms when the interviewer leans forward with a knowing smile, setting their notes aside and brings out a few grainy, black-and-white shots that’s the two of you, young and beautiful, captured in a moment of unguarded affection.
A candid of Patti, young and dark-haired, with one arm draped over your shoulders while both of yours loosely rested around her waist in that unconscious familiarity — you both serious and engrossed to something one of the members of the cast or the crew was uttering.
Y/N squinting : That must’ve been during a rehearsal break. We were always like that — always gravitating toward each other somehow.
Patti snorts but nods : Jesus, I look like I'm about to give orders to invade Normandy.
The next slides into view, Patti is mid-laugh, her eyes crinkled with mirth as she kept her eyes focused on you and her nose adorable scrunched, mouth wide open in a way that feels utterly heedless. You are caught mid-step, clearly attempting some complicated move — your arms out of sync, one leg a bit off balance. The expression on your face is a mix of concentration and exasperation, as if you have just realized you are about to miss the beat. In the corner, the choreographer is blurred but visibly holding their head in their hands, as if praying for patience.
Y/N huffs out a groan : That choreography was hell for me. I could never get that turn right. This one couldn't stop teasing me.
Patti smirks and loosely raises a finger : I remember that day, and I did end up helping you. You were so frustrated, but when you finally got it, you did it better than anyone else. *turns to the camera and raises brows with a scoff* She’s underselling herself — she was brilliant.
Then there was another image; a black-and-white shot of you and Patti during a cast party. Your head was tipped back in laughter, your smile vibrant and unguarded, while Patti leaned close with her chin nestled in her palm, watching you with hazed eyes and a grin that could only be described as adoring. Staring at you as if you hung the moon itself.
Y/N, smiling softly : I forgot about that night.
Patti hums and crosses her legs : We had one too many drinks, and by we I mean you —
Y/N : Please, you can't separate yourself and a bar from one another, you were just as up there as I was that night.
Patti shakes her head : No, and if my memory doesn't fail me which it does NOT — *ignores how you playfully scoff* I watched you. If it weren’t for the photography back in the day, you’d be able to see how flushed your cheeks were. All cheeky smiles and giggles you were. Meanwhile, sure, I'm smiling right there but I was also thinking you were going to do something stupid.
Y/N, leans in closer with a wider grin : Well I was with you that night wasn’t I? *she returns your grin with a one-shoulder shrug*
Another image; Patti, mid-rehearsal, practicing choreography with the dance captain while you stood off from a distance. She’s mid-motion, arms outstretched as he demonstrates a movement next to her. The hem of her black dress flutters faintly as she shifts, her focus razor-sharp, brows quirked in concentration.
Off to the side, almost out of frame, there’s you. Your posture is laid back but composed, script in your loosened grip, your lips slightly ajar as if caught mid-discussion with someone who is barely even visible in the shot. Yet, it’s unmistakable — your focus is not on the script, or the person you were speaking to. It's on her.
Expression soft and without a doubt fond. Smitten were your features, but you always claimed you were simply focused. Patti more than anyone knew that you gained that look when you believed no one was watching, especially when it came to her.
Patti tilts her head, brow hitching as she takes it in: Oh, God, *a mix of exasperation and amusement in her voice* Look at me. I’m practically sweating focus.
Y/N chuckled softly : You were always like that. Completely immersed. Nothing could distract you when you were working.
Patti turns, smiling slyly with a snort bubbling up her throat : Except you, apparently. Caught in the act, huh? Staring at me while pretending to care about your lines.
Y/N laughs, shaking head : I wasn’t pretending. I was… multitasking. You were impossible to ignore, Patti. You still are.
Patti rolls her eyes but smiles nonetheless : Well, you weren’t exactly inconspicuous, were you? I can feel you staring, even in this photo. *motions to photo*
Interviewer : It’s fascinating to see how much this image captures without meaning to. A lot of fans speculated them. There’s a kind of… unspoken connection between you, even in the way the shot is composed.
Patti leans back, arm rested on the back of her chair while crossing her legs : That’s the thing, isn’t it? We weren’t just colleagues. There was always this… awareness. Of each other. Of what the other was doing, how they were feeling. It’s in the work, but it’s also in moments like this.
Y/N nods and adjusts posture : It’s like the work gave us permission to be connected. Even when we weren’t speaking, even when we were on opposite sides of the stage — or the room, apparently — it was there.
Patti glances at you : Well, for what it’s worth, *tilts chin up with a small smirk* you were decent at multitasking. Those lines? You nailed them.
Y/N laughs, smile widening : And you nailed the choreography, and pretty much everything. As always.
Yet there was one particular image, one said “lost” like fragments of an untold story. Snapshots of a connection so vivid and raw it feels almost tangible. The most famous of these — the one that resurfaces like wildfire following your candid admission — is electric in its intimacy. It’s not staged, not posed or polished; it’s messy, unfiltered, and so very human.
Your younger self, all sharp angles and mischief, leaning into a young, breathtaking as always, Patti. Your hand, adorned with the bold, unmistakable rings you always wore back then, cradles her face, chin nestled within the dip connecting your thumb and pointer finger. The metal of your jewelry caught the faintest glint of light even in the monochrome image, contrasting the softness of the moment. The pads of your digits press into her cheek, mushing her features with a teasing gentleness that’s somehow deeply tender as if to mold her into some jesting version of herself. Your lips are curled, caught mid-action, pearly whites lightly nipping at the high structure of her cheekbone. It’s a gesture both absurdly affectionate and completely disarming.
Patti is caught laughing, her mouth wide, the pretty rows of teeth glistening in the grayscale. One of her hands clasps loosely to your wrist as if anchoring herself to the moment, while the other disappears into the strands of your hair, disheveling them slightly. Her touch looks both instinctive and possessive like she can’t help but claim you in that fraction of a second.
Yet it’s the details that transition the photograph into a lively experience, a memory. The faintest bloom of her scarlet lipstick can be seen on the quirk of your mouth and on the collar of your shirt, a telltale mark of a kiss shared seconds before or perhaps purloined in between wisps and bubbles of giggles. The bridge of your nose is scrunched in laughter, your lashes shadowing beneath your eyes as they’re half-closed, caught somewhere between puckish and endearment. Hers, however, are open and round and alive, beaming with that unguarded, boisterous joy that Patti was known to express when in your presence. Wild, untamed, intimate.
The photo feels impossibly near, as though the photographer captured it from mere centimeters away. And yet, there’s no artifice to it. It’s candid in every sense of the word — a glimpse into something private and unspoken, a moment that wasn’t meant for anyone but the two of you.
Your head bows back with laugh while Patti’s eyes narrow slightly as if in faux irritation, but a grin tugs at the corners of her red lips. She leans forward, resting her elbow on the arm of her chair, her gaze flicking from the image to you.
Y/N, holding the print of the image with a small smile, playfully wiping the corner of your mouth as if the lipstick smudge was still there : Goodness. I didn’t even know this one was out there. Was wondering when it would pop out.
Interviewer : And ? What’s the story behind it ?
Patti, seated beside you, leans over to catch a glimpse. She laughs almost immediately — a sharp, unfiltered sound that’s so unmistakably hers, cutting through the room like a blade.
Patti : Oh for crying out loud. *takes the picture from your hold, stares at it for a moment before looking back up at you with an eye roll* Was this after rehearsal? Curtain call? Or one of those cast parties where everyone got far too comfortable? Don’t remember but someone had a camera, snapping photos while we were all blowing off steam.
Y/N leans forward, propping elbows on knees : Blowing off steam is one way to put it. She was yelling at me about something. I can’t remember what — it was probably something ridiculous.
Patti : Ridiculous ? *turning to face you fully* You kept singing my lines under your breath, trying to trip me up!
Y/N grins : And it worked. She got so mad, I had to go and force her to look at me. *glances at her* She can’t stay mad at me forever. The more I grabbed her face, the more it led her to kiss me right here. *gestures to the spot*
You nor her go into the details or exactness of it all however, how it truly occurred — a lie, a twine of an illusion of something you both had fabricated, nor point out the print mark of her lips on the fabric of your shirt. That was only for you both to know. Yes, she was a bit angry that day, but the night had been a success. You managed to get her to fully see that by bringing her into your hold and smothering her with your playful and affectionate tactics. Goodness, did it work — she glowed with you. She glowed for you. Because of you.
Interviewer with raised brow and teasing smile : And the bite ?
Patti, laughs loosely and snorts : This one bites with ‘cuteness overload anxiety’. Someone just snapped the shot without us even noticing it.
Patti holds the image up to the light, her gaze narrowing slightly, like if she’s inspecting every detail : Look at that, *her tone blunt as she glares* You mauled me.
Y/N, voice low and teasing : You didn’t seem to mind that day. Besides, it was worth having you smile again.
Patti waves a hand, grinning widely : Was it not normal for women to kiss even then? God forbid we enjoy ourselves. *pauses, her tone dipping into something light, more reflective* But look at us. So happy and young.
Interviewer, senses an opportunity : Was there something more between you two?
Patti cuts them off with a sharp laugh, her head tilting back : Oh, they always ask, don’t they? *turns to you, eyebrows raised* Should we give them the answer they’ve been waiting for? Or let them keep wondering?
Y/N is quiet for a beat, letting the weight of the moment settle.
Y/N smiles lightly : I think the picture says more than we ever could.
Patti, amused but satisfied, is about to hand the photograph back to the interviewer : Well, there ya have it. Two women, enjoying life and each other’s company. Nothing wrong with that.
Patti pauses halfway, glances at you then at the photo, then at the interviewer with a raised brow before withdrawing her hand, the very hand that holds the photograph : For the record, I’m damn keeping this.
Y/N — you laugh softly, and for a second or so, it feels like no time has passed at all. The photograph might belong to the past, but the nostalgia, the melancholy, the warmth it stirs ? That is timeless.

Cinema Starview Presents: It Really Was Agatha All Along
I’m such a lover of the occult, witches, mystical beings and all, so Agatha All Along was a real treat to watch. As someone that loved The Craft, Practical Magic, Halloween Town, Wizard of Oz, Twitches, Hocus Pocus (sorta), AHS Coven, and many other witchy fictional stories in modern day media, this series falls right in line as a potential new comfort show to watch during spooky szn.
I’m not gonna lie, I still hate the name of this show, they could’ve came up or chosen a better name, but that’s not what’s important. Let’s just talk about how well this show was as a return to great storytelling from Marvel, cause they sure as hell have been flopping HARDCORE lately.
For starters can we just give it up to Kathryn Hahn!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Kathryn is an amazing actress, her comedic timing is something of perfection. Her role as Agatha Harkness is both cunning, calculated, snarky, and yet deeply flawed and caring to her core. Her connection to Billy at the start of it all at first made me think Joe’s character was gonna be a mix of Nicholas and Billy, but Joe Locke being Billy makes a lot more sense. I loved how her story was both tragic and also had lots of depth to it.
I never did watch Heartstopper (don’t plan to) but he definitely fits the role. I think casting Kit Conner as his other half, Hulkling, would be THEE best casting decision and I hope they do that!! As for who Tommy will be, we’ll have to wait and see but I think Tommy will be introduced in that Vision series or maybe even Wonder Man?? And now that Ghost!Agatha and Billy are a team, I’m intrigued to see what adventures they get themselves in when finding Tommy
Might I add that Billy’s room is full of so much pop culture references!!! Like I’m jealous and I definitely need his room as my moodboard template.
I think I say this for everyone, that Aubrey Plaza kills it everytime in her roles. Her monotone and slightly edgy vibe is what makes her great for shows like this. Her role as Rio/Death was very poetic — the phrase “Death comes for us all” is so cryptic and yet so true. It’s the same thing with change being the only constant in life, and life is full of so many deaths and changes, but also there’s so much growth and birth happening all the time. I’m sure we’ll see Rio again, maybe if they FINALLY introduce Mephisto she could act as a henchmen or bounty hunter of sorts for him.
As for the other witches, Alice’s story was sad, but it didn’t feel fully developed as the other witches. Patti LuPone’s role as Lilia is soooo poignant and wispy (as they say). I love Patti’s roles so much, she’s become a favorite of mine over the years and her portrayal of a divination witch was phenomenal. Sasheer Zamata taking on this role was very interesting, I remember her time on SNL and to see her in a dramatic and whimsical setting like this was a nice change.
I’m just so glad her character Jen was able to be unbound by the spell Agatha placed onto her (as well as the cultural significance that represents). In a way, Jen was a final girl given everybody else died, Billy and Rio don’t officially count since they had grander importance than Jen does in terms of the MCU, but good for Jen. I hope we see her again someday.
This show was a nice return to form for Marvel. I’m not the biggest fan of how they treated Wanda in Multiverse of Madness, but I love the creepy supernatural factor that comes with this area of the MCU. I hope they keep it up, but by the looks of it, I’m sure there gonna be more mediocre content until we get to the end of this Multiverse Saga, however this was a nice break in between.
Jac Schaeffer has done it again ✨ they need to give her a raise and make her in charge of the supernatural sector of the MCU.
SCORE: 8/10 ⭐️

For the fandom ask game!
Fandom:
Agatha All Along - 12, 17, 19
Ship - Agatha/Rio - 2, 10, 14
Character - Agatha or Rio: 1, 8
for agatha all along:
12. ...what attracted me into checking it out.
agatha harkness, baby! i looooved wandavision - like, got up early every week to watch it while i worked out so i wouldn't get spoiled - and i loved agnes/agatha from the moment she popped into wanda's kitchen and started flirting her face off as a force of chaos. and then they added patti lupone, and then i started hearing rumours they were going to make agatha as canonically queer as we all knew she was? i was ready. (except for how i was not, actually, ready.)
17. ...the world-building aspect of the story I have the greatest admiration for.
hahahaaaaa not to cheap out on this one but it's absolutely the fact that agatha harkness is jolene. can't beat it.
19. ...one behind-the-scenes trivia fact I've learned somewhere and my thoughts on it.
oh my god, so daniel selon, the costume designer, recently posted that the shot of the coven flying in front of the moon was done with puppets and that blew my mind. check it out! they are so cool. i actually got to work a bit with a master puppeteer earlier this year (i realise that sounds like an innuendo but it is not) and so i am in awe of how much effort went into these. practical! magic!
for agatha/rio:
2. ...why I do or don't ship them.
holy fuck i ship them like crazy. they are so fucked up. they have so much history. they are each the only person who could ever match the other's freak. jac schaeffer and the writers' room were like, who could stand up to agatha? oh, i know! death! and they were right. death broke all the rules of nature for agatha. how could i not??? and that's BEFORE getting into the knife thing. come on.
10. ...rate the level of stupid they reach in their pining.
absolutely zero. neither of them ever pine for the other. that would be ridiculous. death does not pine. and agatha simply has better things to do. rio definitely does not spend half her time keeping an ear out in hopes that agatha is going to suck another coven dry so rio can figure out where she is. agatha definitely did not dedicate herself to tracking down the book of the damned specifically so she could piss off rio by disappearing instead of dealing with her feelings. none pining. none. (1000000/10, they are both utter fools)
14. ...which tropes I think describe them the best.
hahaha iiiiiiis lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers a trope? (shhhhh they are going back to lovers shhhhh)
for agatha:
1 ...why I love them, like them or hate them.
where do i even begin. okay okay okay okay. i love her. to start with, i have a real pathological thing for characters who slap on as many masks as possible in order to avoid dealing with feelings, for absolutely no reason, thank you. and agatha is such a master manipulator and troll. i love how smart and calculating and incisive and determined she is. i love how greedy she is - for knowledge, for power. i love that she refuses to feel shame about her desires, or at least refuses to let any shame she feels stop her. i love that she does - grudgingly, unwillingly - make space for love in her life. i love that she's such a dick. i love that she has faced so much horror that she just refuses to take most things seriously because nothing else can be as bad. i love that she looks good in literally anything (except maybe that mobcap from ep 9, but to be fair that is playing on hard mode). i love her.
8. ...a headcanon I have about this character.
hmm, i don't know what i want to share that i either haven't already written about or don't plan to write about. let me think. oh, i know i wrote up a bunch of options, but i do believe she makes billy take señor scratchy home, hahaha.
for rio:
1 ...why I love them, like them or hate them.
do i love rio? i love agatha so much and i had to think about rio. do i just love rio because of how much she loves agatha? hm! i wish we had gotten so much more rio! i love that she cannot say no to agatha, hahahaaaaa. i love that she can't quite maintain her poker face when she's feeling strong emotions - the times she lets it slip are devastating. (i have to say, i have never much cared for aubrey plaza, but she has some great moments in this show.) i love her anger. i love that she is fair. i love that she's so petulant ('why don't you want me'). i talked about the scene with alice in another ask, but i love that rio takes a moment there to have a conversation with alice and to be like, actually, you fulfilled your life's meaning here. what more do you want. death isn't kind, but she is truthful, and i love that.
8. ...a headcanon I have about this character.
i absolutely believe that every time agatha kills someone, rio knows immediately.
thank you! ask me more things!

I just watched the first two episodes of Agatha All Along, and I'm hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
ETA: I read this isn't well rated on rotten tomatoes, at left compared to most other marvel series, and can't help but wonder if it's due to misogyny. I thought it rocked! Watch it if you can, and fight the fanboys. It's a great show for the spooky season so far.
ETA 2: I'm glad I rewatched Wandavision first. I think you do need to have watched WV at least once before watching AAA, but it was nice having it fresh in my memory to catch the shout outs.
Random thoughts on the show. Spoilers:
I'm not only getting a huge ex-lovers vibe between Aubrey Plaza's Agent Vidal and Agnes/Agatha, but possibly a bdsm relationship between them. Plaza looks sexy as hell in this.
Does this confirm Wanda's death? Or is it just what Agatha thinks happened to her? I never believed she was really dead before, especially since in Wandavision it says the Scarlet Witch is stronger than the sorcerer supreme. (I didn't like the movie, and don't remember if they addressed that or not.) I wanted Pale Vision to find her, and the two of them to live happily ever after
Agatha's house is gorgeous on the inside!
Why would it kill Agatha to take Rio Vidal's power? That makes no sense to me that Vidal would suddenly back off in the fight because Agatha has no power.
I love that she puts the locket in her bra rather than a pocket.
Is the teen her son from the award etc in the first ep, Nicky Scratch? Which is another name for the devil of course. I hope they don't go the satanic route though.
Patti Lupone! I laughed out loud when the other witch accused her of not singing well.
I love the Ballad! I can't get it out of my head.
The scene where her old coven attacks was genuinely scary.
This show just makes me smile. :)

I've said before that I would cast Patti Lupone as Moll Flanders, but on this read I'm really seeing the strong Mrs. Lovett energy in the narration- specifically the comically mercenary attitude towards things her era would find shocking. I can imagine Mrs. Lovett saying that if she'd known her lover was only using her, she would have negotiated a steady price, and I can imagine Moll being horrified that a lover murdered a man, then finding out it was a blackmailer and declaring that's all right, then.
The biggest difference is that Moll would never be so cruel to Lucy- as we'll see later, she has a strong sense of solidarity with other women in trouble. I can see her doing capitalistic cannibalism, albeit on a short term basis with just Pirelli rather than as a long term career.

To all the Patti LuPone lovers out there, I'm really quite desperate to find a specific picture of her: it's a backstage photo of her from the 2005 version of Sweeney Todd (you know, the one in which she has the black bobbed hair?), she's sitting on a sofa with some decorative pillows around her and she has her legs crossed.
If someone has this picture, please send it to me! I'll be forever grateful!

top ten sondheim songs in your opinion (can be in any order)
Anon, I hope you know that asking me this is the equivalent of asking a mother to pick her favorite kid. Yeah, sure okay, she has a favorite, but making her admit it is like pulling teeth. So. I've compiled two lists for you: one of my personal top ten, and one of the objective top ten I think should/could be considered the best. I'm also going to be indicating my preferred renditions of these songs, because that plays a major factor into things. Also, because I'm incapable of being concise, you're also getting a brief explanation on at least my top ten, so...enjoy. Or, my condolences, I guess. You had no idea the can of worms you were opening.
My Personal Top Ten: (in no particular order, and only at this specific point in my life right now this second)
1. The Ladies in Red segment of the Sondheim 80th Birthday Celebration concert (2010): "The Ladies Who Lunch," (Company) - Patti LuPone* "Losing My Mind," (Follies) - Marin Mazzie* "The Glamorous Life," (A Little Night Music) - Audra McDonald "Could I Leave You?" (Follies) - Donna Murphy* "Not a Day Goes By," (Merrily We Roll Along) - Bernadette Peters "I'm Still Here," (Follies) - Elaine Stritch* Right off the bat, I'm cheating. Four (*) of my top ten are just from this segment of the concert so I'm squeezing them all into one so I can include more songs. Quick rundown of why: self-explanatory, c'mon. Donna's "Could I Leave You?" is my number one Sondheim, hand's down.
2. "The Girls of Summer," (The Girls of Summer) - Gabrielle Stravelli Sondheim Unplugged is a monthly cabaret series at 54 Below, and I go to every show. It's really opened my eyes to some of these hidden gems. It's just a fun little number.
3. "What More Do I Need?" (Saturday Night) - Kelli O'Hara (90th Birthday Concert) The song that finally made me decide that I was in love with Kelli O'Hara and sopranos were actually breathtaking people who deserved my adoration. (Still an alto lover at heart though)
4. "We're Gonna Be All Right," (Do I Hear a Waltz?) - Marin Mazzie & Jason Danieley Naughtiest couple on Broadway sing a naughty duet. Truly, what more could I ask for? I love a bitingly antagonistic song.
5. "There's Always A Woman," (Anyone Can Whistle) - Jan Maxwell & Victoria Clark And speaking of bitingly antagonistic. This is a song where two Divas get to be catty bitches to an absurd degree, and I cannot get enough of it. I also deeply love and miss Jan Maxwell. And where else are you going to get Jan Maxwell calling Vicki Clark a whore? Incredible.
6. "The Madame Song," (The Seven Per-Cent Solution) - Bebe Neuwirth Clever wordplay, sexy brothel madame, wink-wink nudge-nudge raunchy. Sung by my beloved Bebe Neuwirth. Obviously a winner.
7. "The Story of Lucy and Jessie," (Follies) - Jan Maxwell Follies is my favorite Sondheim show, and Phyllis Rogers Stone is my favorite Sondheim character. And while Donna Murphy is my favorite Phyllis, I go to Jan Maxwell for this song. She was just so sublime. The song itself is clever, cutting, and choreographed wonderfully every time.
8. "Take Me to the World," (Evening Primrose) - Soara-Joye Ross The actual movie this is from is so fucking weird, and if it were Charmaine Carr's version, I wouldn't look twice at it. But I had the pleasure of hearing Soara-Joye Ross sing this song at the first Sondheim Unplugged show two days after his death. And it was just...wow.
9. "The Miller's Son," (A Little Night Music) - Elizabeth Stanley It has everything I love in a Sondheim. Clever lyrics, brutal pacing, and the danger of tripping up even the best cabaret performer. When you're cocky, that's when Sondheim gets you. Elizabeth Stanley has only ever been attractive to me in this specific video.
10. Being Alive," (Company) - hear me out. Hear me out. Marquee Five (ft. Sierra Rein) Okay, okay, I know, obscure choice here. However. Up until I heard this rendition, I did not really care about this song. Any male version went in one ear and out the other. If you couldn't tell by my list, I am almost exclusively dedicated to older broads. And yes, Patti has a fantastic rendition, and so do lots of other women. But this one with its harmonies and its alto lead singer does it for me like no one else.
Objective Top Ten Sondheim Songs: (order arbitrary, rendition my preference)
1. "A Weekend in the Country," (A Little Night Music) - the Rebecca Luker one 2. "Getting Married Today," (Company) - Madeline Kahn (alt. Katie Finneran) 3. "Could I Leave You?" (Follies) - Donna Murphy 4. "Being Alive," (Company) - Marquee Five 5. "Losing My Mind," (Follies) - Marin Mazzie 6. "Someone in a Tree," (Pacific Overtures) - 90th Birthday Concert 7. "A Little Priest," (Sweeney Todd) - 80th Birthday Concert, but most renditions are fantastic. 8. "Finishing the Hat," (Sunday in the Park with George) - Mandy Patinkin 9. "Sunday," (Sunday in the Park with George) - Marquee Five, but any version is transcendent. 10. "Loving You," (Passion) - Donna Murphy If you're somehow not sick of me yet, ask me to give a no-commentary top 100, ranked in order, then we'll really have fun.

Marvel Studios’ Agatha All Along takes fans back to Westview, New Jersey, to follow the sassy yet scarred Agatha Harkness, played by the endlessly captivating Kathryn Hahn. The WandaVision spin-off, directed by showrunner Jac Schaeffer, taps into darker, mystical elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with style and a healthy dose of campy, supernatural flair. Set three years after the events of WandaVision, the series delves deeper into Agatha’s psyche as she faces new allies, old foes, and the trials of the legendary Witches’ Road. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9pXbNz6Vbw Premise: After the finale of WandaVision left her spellbound in Westview, Agatha finds herself unexpectedly freed with the help of “Teen” (played by Joe Locke). This mysterious, goth-inflected teen dreams of traveling the Witches’ Road and, to Agatha’s dismay, knows more about witchcraft than any ordinary fanboy. Core themes: The heart of Agatha All Along lies in Agatha's relationships—both with her new coven and with the emotional scars from her past. Her struggles with vulnerability in a coven setup are particularly compelling, especially given that she’s spent centuries as a solitary figure, evoking sympathy even in her sassiest, most sarcastic moments. The storyline introduces Agatha’s motives in forming the coven as a mix of survival and a need for belonging, creating a layered character arc that keeps viewers invested. The show explores themes of redemption, loyalty, and acceptance, as Agatha tries to earn back her powers and come to terms with her past mistakes. The inclusion of the Witches’ Road, an MCU take on the archetypal hero’s journey, brings added suspense and mysticism, expanding the MCU's portrayal of witchcraft and grounding it in rich lore without overwhelming viewers unfamiliar with the comic origins. Hahn and Plaza are delightful: Kathryn Hahn shines as Agatha, deftly balancing her sardonic wit with subtle notes of vulnerability, making Agatha both compelling and relatable. Hahn’s portrayal elevates Agatha from a secondary character in WandaVision to a complex anti-heroine, and her chemistry with Joe Locke is undeniable. Locke brings youthful energy and humor as the gothic "Teen," whose secret identity adds intrigue and emotional stakes. Locke’s performance captures the impulsive nature of a teen discovering their identity, while also balancing the maturity of a soul who has experienced loss and trauma. Aubrey Plaza’s portrayal of Rio Vidal is a standout. Reuniting with her former lover, Agatha, adds layers to the story. She really brings a ton of tension and emotional depth. Plaza brings her usual dark humor and mysterious edge, creating a fascinating dynamic that keeps viewers guessing about her intentions. Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu, a 450-year-old divination expert, adds a touch of eccentric wisdom to the coven. Her nonlinear perception of time and experience with magic offer unique perspectives and mystical insights, grounding the show’s supernatural elements. Supporting cast: Supporting characters, including Debra Jo Rupp’s Sharon Davis and Sasheer Zamata’s Jen Kale, bring levity and variety to Agatha's new coven. Sharon, still grappling with being perceived as “Mrs. Hart” from WandaVision, serves as a humorous but endearing character who begrudgingly adopts her new identity as a “green witch,” while Zamata’s portrayal of Jen provides a sense of practicality, especially as the potions expert. Schaeffer shines as director and showrunner: Showrunner and lead director Jac Schaeffer, known for her work on WandaVision, brings her knack for character-driven storytelling to Agatha All Along. Schaeffer’s direction offers a compelling blend of dark fantasy with vibrant humor and relatability. The pacing occasionally lags in the middle episodes as the coven assembles and faces introductory trials, which may be a drawback for those expecting more consistent action. However, Schaeffer uses this time to delve into character development, giving the show emotional weight that strengthens the climactic episodes. Schaeffer’s skill lies in balancing the series’ tonal shifts—from dark and brooding to campy and humorous—without veering into cliché. This tonal balance enriches Agatha’s arc, showcasing the contrast between her dark nature and her newfound desire for connection. Darkly beautiful visuals: The series’ visuals are hauntingly beautiful, with the Witches' Road rendered as an eerie, shifting landscape that reflects Agatha’s internal struggles. Dark forests, mystical symbols, and other gothic elements are rendered with a cinematic quality that immerses viewers in Agatha’s world, setting it apart from other MCU entries. The production design team deserves praise for incorporating magical elements into the characters’ wardrobe and coven artifacts, adding authenticity to the witchcraft lore that underscores Agatha’s journey. The series’ color palette leans heavily into dark purples, blacks, and greens, emphasizing the mystical and otherworldly. The design choices feel cohesive, enhancing the narrative’s darker elements and Agatha’s connection to traditional witchcraft. Practical effects blend with CGI to create spells and magical phenomena that feel grounded and believable, lending the series an organic charm that’s refreshing in a CGI-heavy genre. Leans into horror: As the 11th series in the MCU, Agatha All Along marks a stylistic shift toward supernatural and mystical elements, broadening the franchise’s narrative landscape. By focusing on Agatha—a character not traditionally viewed as heroic—the series allows Marvel to explore gray moral territory. The show’s reception will likely be split; fans of WandaVision and darker MCU narratives may appreciate this introspective, witchcraft-heavy story, while others may find the series’ pacing and darker tone a departure from the MCU's typical fare. Overall: For Marvel fans, this series enriches the backstory of characters and introduces new ones that could later have larger implications within the MCU. The introduction of the Witches' Road suggests possibilities for future storylines tied to the mystical side of Marvel, potentially influencing future series or films. Agatha All Along is a bold, intriguing addition to the MCU, blending gothic horror with character-driven drama to create a unique entry that showcases Agatha Harkness in all her complexity. While the series isn’t without its slow moments, its richly developed characters, engaging visuals, and exploration of witchcraft lore make it a compelling watch. Kathryn Hahn’s performance, coupled with Jac Schaeffer’s direction, transforms Agatha into a relatable anti-heroine, capable of carrying her own story.

Agatha All Along delivers the MCU’s first lesbian kiss
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/agatha-all-along-finale-gives-us-the-mcus-first-lesbian-kiss/
Agatha All Along delivers the MCU’s first lesbian kiss
Disney+ series Agatha All Along, already the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s gayest project ever, has delivered the MCU’s first lesbian kiss in its big finale.
Kathryn Hahn plays the titular anti-hero Agatha, Heartstopper‘s Joe Locke as the ‘Teen’ and Aubrey Plaza is Agatha’s nemesis Rio Vidal. Patti LuPone (!) also played a witch earlier in the season.
Previously, Joe Locke’s mysterious ‘Teen’ was revealed to be powerful, queer comic book character Billy Kaplan/Wiccan. Meanwhile, the sexual tension between Agatha and Rio (who is literally Death) was off the charts all season long.
Agatha All Along concluded with a two-part finale on Disney+ this week.
In it, Agatha makes a deal with her nemesis – and ex-lover – Rio. If she can convince Billy to surrender to Rio then she has to leave Agatha alone for good.
Agatha fails to keep up her end of the bargain, and Rio attacks her. But Billy then comes to the rescue, infusing the powerless Agatha with his magic, resulting in the two women going head-to-head.
Ultimately, Agatha chooses to sacrifice herself to save Billy, and does so in an extended, passionate kiss with Rio. We love to see it.
Agatha All Along is streaming on Disney+ now.

agatha closes her eyes but rio is in disbelief so it takes her another beat to close hers and hold agatha's face but she's so overwhelmed her hands eventually just drop and she sinks into the kiss before she goes back to hold her wrists to make sure the moment doesn't end- pic.twitter.com/ApEVdqiPeV

Thinking about how Agatha could have enticed Rio to blast her again and draw her into a fight to get her power, but decided to spend her final living act kissing Rio and dying in her embrace. A soft and calm death. Unlike her whole life. I’m not okay #AgathaAllAlong pic.twitter.com/O0Qu885EUl

This 2024 Fall Season on Broadway maybe as exciting as the Spring 2024! Probably the most anticipated actor to come to Broadway is the recent Oscar winner, Robert Downey Jr in "McNeil" at Lincoln Center starting September 5th at The Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The acoustics in this theater should show off the acting chops of Downey, who is a behemoth of a fill actor.
One of my favorite plays returns to Broadway; "Our Town", a play I saw at Town Hall back in the 80's. "Sunset Boulevard", another great show that I last saw in Los Angeles with Glenn Close will be returning to "The White Way". The Bard's "Romeo and Juliet" too will return this fall season. It will be interesting to see how it will be directed. Another great show of the same genre, "Othello" will run in the Spring of 2025 starring Denzel Washington.
Another hugh Hollywood actor will be making his debut on Broadway; George Clooney in "Good Night, and Good Luck" will have its run this fall. "Maybe Happy Ending" will play at the Belasco in mid September. This show could be a sleeper of the Fall season.
As an early treat, three shows are coming this summer. The first has started early previews already: "Breaking The Story" at the Keiser Theatre. A very successful, albeit, short run at City Center "Once Upon A Mattress" will play at the Hudson Theatre at the end of July. "Oh Mary" after a run off Broadway will begin at the Lyceum Theatre June 26th. A fourth show which I didn't include because it opens previews August 29th at the Booth and is technically a kickoff weekend for some limited theater, is "The Roommate" with the great Patty LuPone; it also includes Mia Farrow as well.
"Yellow Face" is also a show coming in September, followed by a slew of shows in October: "Wonderful World", a story about the life of Louis Armstrong, the greatest Trumpet player ever. A musical I just saw at The Morristown Performing Arts Center "The Pirates of Penzance" makes its overdue return to Broadway. This Tony winner cleaned up at the Tony's back in 1982 when it last played. "Tammy Faye" will also begin in October at the newly renovated Palace Theatre.
From the movie, "Death Becomes Her" at the Lunt Fontaine Theatre has had some early buzz in the theater community. In November "Eureka Day" is showing some promise as well. This show will play at the Friedman Theatre. "Swept Away" has not announced an opening date yet and I have not seen a theater for it. This show is being highly talked about as well as highly anticipated. A show I find interesting is "Left On Tenth". I am hoping it is similar to say "Between Riverside and Crazy" Either way, the title is intriguing to say the least.
Being treated to so many great shows this season has spoiled the theater lover for sure. The lineup for this fall looks like it may do the same. Tony judges this season do not have an enviable position. So many great shows, so few awards to be given out. With a plethora of talent, both old and new, we look forward to the new shows slated for this fall season on Broadway, as well as a few off Broadway.
Robert Downey Jr, Lincoln Center, "Pirates of Penzance, Linda Ronstadt, Tony Awards, Oscars, Hollywood, Broadway, George Clooney, J LO, Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet", Patty LuPone, Mia Farrow, "Our Town", Town Hall, New York City, #Broadway Bob #No Bull With Raging Robert, www.broadwayworld.com, Booth Theatre, Nimbus Magazine, Dramatists Guild.
