secret starter call - @ladyohdeath
Tumblr media
❝ ... Look, Lady... You scare me a lot, but I kind of on a whole mission here, so you wanna go bug someone else? ❞ He says, with a hiss, as if he hadn't already gotten himself damned to much worse. Hellstorm's certain that Bobbi's soul was down here and he had to get her out of Hell, at least. Hopefully, the both of them alive, and whatever this woman was... he knows she's Death, but he can't back down. Already planned to tell the Devil to go fuck himself. ❝ There's gotta be like a million others. ❞

Hi !!! Regarding that recently popular post of yours about female characters always existing to indulge the male protagonist or to get involved in something romantic I COULDN'T AGREE MORE , I don't know if it's bc I'm aromantic but I'm just so tired of getting into a movie, book, series with well written female characters only for the writers to give them some sort of romance that most of the times serves as a weakness , or is there to show that she is indeed human guys look she isn't a bitch who only cares about her work /purpose etc. Like give me a fucking break , women can have other flaws and weaknesses it doesn't always have to be a romance thing . It's almost like female characters can only make mistakes or act flawed only when it comes to romance otherwise they are annoying and problematic. There are so many media comics, books , anime, cartoons with male protagonists that never got them romantically involved and yet they are considered complex and fleshed out characters. GIVE ME FEMALE CHARACTERS LIKE THAT please 🙏. Sorry for my yapping , could you please recommend me some of your favorite media with female protagonists that dont focus on romance . I'll take anything, I'm desperate 😮‍💨
List compiled from checking my back-issues and polling multiple discord servers. Extremely comics-heavy because this is a comics blog.
(*) indicates that I have not personally read/watched/played/etc whatever is listed, so I can't personally vouch for it.
Also, due to the fact that I am not personally familiar with everything listed, I can't provide relevant content warnings. Some of these are significantly heavier than others. Some of these are parts of larger franchises that may not make since without background knowledge.
Comics/Graphic Novels:
Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld (1983), (1985), 1986 one-shot, Amethyst (1987).*
Batgirl (2000)
Batgirl (2009)* (these get separate entries because they're about different characters)
Birds of Prey (1999)* and (2010)*-- some romance, but it's not the focus
"Most Black Widow runs"*
Botticelli's Apprentice by Ursula Murray Husted*
Champions (2018) -- ensemble cast with multiple female characters. Some romantic plots, but not the focus.
Dark Spaces: Good Deeds (2023)
DIE (2018) -- ensemble cast with transfem/genderfluid lead. She is married, but her wife exists mostly off-screen, and romance isn't a major plotpoint.
Exiles (2018) -- team book with female lead, I don't think there's any romance, though characters may reference past romantic entanglements
Gotham Academy (2014)*
Harrow County (2015) -- I don't think there's any romance with the main character
Hawkgirl (2023)*
Huntress (1989) -- some light romance, but it's not the focus.
Lumberjanes* -- there is some romance between the leads, apparently, but the main focus is friendship.
Manhunter (2004)*
Patsy Walker, AKA Hellcat! (2015)*
Powergirl (1988) and (2009)*
Radiant Red (2022)* -- main character has a fiance but I am told this is not a major aspect
Scarlet Witch (2015)
Something is Killing the Children (2019-ongoing)
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (2015), (2015-2017) -- this does feature some light romance, to memory, but I don't think it's central
Unstoppable Wasp (2017), (2018-2019)* (aspec main character and aspec writer)
Wonder Woman: the Hiketeia
Wonder Woman: Historia
World's Finest (2012)
X-23 (2010), All-New Wolverine (2015), and X-23 (2018)
X-Men (2013) -- almost entirely female cast, no romance
Gwenpool, the character-- I know some of her earlier stuff is rather romance-centered, or at least includes romantic plots, but more recently the character is explicitly aroace, so you might be interested.
Anime/Manga:
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure part 6: Stone Ocean* (some romance, but not the main focus)
Magical Girl Dandelion*
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
"Any Ghibli movie with a female protagonist", Spirited Away*
Witch Hat Atelier
Movies/TV:
Alien
The Descent*
Derry Girls*
Evil Dead (2013)*, and Evil Dead Rise*
Hellraiser*
Video Games (blanket statement: I do not play video games. I am not personally familiar with any of these.)
BloodRayne
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Fatal Fame franchise
Resident Evil 2, 3, Resident Evil 8 DLC: Shadows of Rose, Resident Evil: Revelations 1 & 2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Silent Hill 3
Books
Wayfarers series* by Becky Chambers, especially A Closed and Common Orbit, which has 2 female protagonists and 0 romance. Can be read as standalone.
Tamora Pierce's body of work*-- the amount of romance may vary book-to-book.
I hope this is helpful to some extent or another :) -- others are welcome to add their own recommendations in reblogs/comments.

Who are the
Marvel Divas ?
The Marvel Divas is a group of 4 (at the time) b-list super heroines from a limited 4-Issue comic of the same name. The comic is a Marvel parody of Sex & the City.
The Girls:
Angelica Jones aka Firestar
Patsy Walker aka Hellcat
Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat
Monica Rambeau aka Photon
Tumblr media
This is a blog about the girls as a group if they were still friends and lived together today, inspired by the xterminators incorrect quotes blog @fuckyeahxterminators and this blog will include some personal ships such as Dazzlestar (Dazzler x Firestar)

I do think the fact that the Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat comics and the character of Trish in Jessica Jones are the same character is so funny like. just do whatever! It’s comics, go as light or dark as you want and it’ll be fine. Someone’s done it worse than you already.

Leaving it up to Tumblr to choose my next comic chronology in like... 2 months when I'm free of green lantern (2 months is not very generous I fear)
Reasoning under the cut :3 (very long)
Duke- pretty short (less than 200 issues), I really like his character from what I've seen of him. I think it will also be hell (as is the nature of most batman adjacent chronologies) but it'll be worth it... Nice and short one and also swag character
Jefferson- 1. Black lightning is very fun early on and 2. I've already made the spreadsheet so I just have to read it. He's just like... A very cool character and I like him a lot so far. I just am gods scaredest soldier with long chronos (which his isn't too bad but it's ALSO batman adjacent and those are so scary)
Barbara - my best friend Babs but also if I have to reread the killing joke I AM killing Alan Moore ok. In theory I love her SOOOO much. In practice I think the fact I'm having to keep a "how bad is the disability rep" counter next to each issue says a lot. Unfortunately. Also already made this spreadsheet but I think it would be a very bad and good time.
Clint- again in theory would be fun. He seems right up my alley but alas if I have to see Tony Stark I do fly into a blind rage. And unfortunately I think he appears a lot... And also unfortunately I think I would suffer due to blonde man disorder ok (as I always do)
Silhouette+Aaron- package deal bc they're siblings. I've already started this one and then stopped because whoever is writing the early stuff SHOULD go to hell for what they're doing. For those unfamiliar, silhouette is one of the only heroes I've ever seen using forearm crutches (pretty awesome) and her power is that she can kind of travel via shadow iirc? Which would be really cool if they didn't like... Make her lose all her clothes and mobility aids when she's doing this. Which is why I quit. But she's very very cool minus that (and in my mind... I know she's written better later on) and her brother is his own can of worms (in... Definitely a way). In theory tho I rly gotta get through their stuff
Theodore - first off: I am a FIEND for marvel 70s horror comics. Second off: he is better than swamp thing. Third off: his big red eyes. But to be serious though like .. the Steve Gerber and Gerry Conway era of man thing is SO good and like .. political in an interesting way. I just need motivation to get around to it. Also he's cutesy ok!!!
Jason Blood- another consequence of the 70s horror era fan but this guy has CRAZY lore. He's a medieval knight who got possessed by a demon thanks to Merlin and then he's just lived through the centuries and become an occult guy. Reasons why I stopped this one - sometimes old horror comics are bad and horrible. And also a like 60 issue Garth Ennis written series. But I do really wanna finish his stuff bc he's like .. DC's version of Hellstrom (which. Genuinely awesome character, if you're interested in older horror comics def check his original run out <- my plug for my silly husband hellstrom who sucks so much or whatever. He's rly good tho seriously)
Jennifer - I've already made her spreadsheet and started it but the writers are soooo fucking bad most of the time. It's actually horrific. Pros for her- pretty good character when written well (her hellcat series stuff was REALLY nice for me. But I'll always hype up patsy walker aka hellcat at any chance) cons for her- the misogyny ... And my reward for finishing it is watching the she hulk show. So take that as you will
Dracula- I started his stuff bc I was PROMISED Gerry Conway (who is like.. one of my top 5 writers. He does amazing old horror comics and made a bunch of very cool characters). And then he left like 2 issues in and it went downhill. Some of the same authors who did some of the good (other marvel vampire who is redacted for my own safety ok) issues did stuff for drac. In theory this would be silly campy 70s horror comics fun. In practice oh my god I am gaining new authors to hate so bad...

Patsy (Hellcat) Walker must have one of the most interesting backstories of all comic book heroines. She appeared in Marvel comics and, originally, was the creation of Stuart Little and Ruth Atkinson, first appearing in the teenage girls’ comic Miss America in November 1942. Patsy continued as a ditzy high school girl in her own title, featuring teen romantic stories, throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In 1964, Patsy received a reboot and finally graduated from college and her adventures as a liberated young career woman became the focus of her stories. In 1972, the character was relaunched in Amazing Adventures. Assuming the role of a crime fighting super heroine, replete with skin tight yellow costume and flowing auburn locks giving her an uncanny resemblance to DC’s Batgirl, Patsy joined an Avengers-like group, The Defenders, in 1977. She continued to play a subsidiary role as Hellcat in many issues of The Defenders throughout the 1980s and 1990s, eventually becoming an occult investigator.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 2015, Patsy received her own title once again in Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat! which returned her to the premise of the original title by focusing on Patsy’s “civilian” life as a young working woman and her romantic adventures, but retaining her crime fighting heroine alter ego. In the panels featured here, the two aspects of Patsy’s character come together, much to the regret of the two muggers attempting to rob her and her friends! This incarnation of Hellcat was written by Kate Leth and illustrated by Brittney Williams. The series ended in February 2017.

random ask: tell us about the best comic book you've read recently?
Good question! Honestly, I haven't been reading very much at all this month because my brain is too Consumed By The Horrors to have the ability to focus on anything at all.
I also feel like I've been in a bit of a comics funk ever since finishing Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat!, because it was SO my jam in pretty much every way, and that whole comics Thing where after that run, everything that happened in it kind of got waved away for the next Hellcat runs made me really grumpy. I don't like that immediately after PWAKAH, Patsy's next run was as Iron Man's sidepiece, and then after that she has such a SHARP and COMPLETE tone-shift for the most recent run compared to PWAKAH. Like, I get that they panicked and wanted to make her Sexy(TM) again or whatever, but... blech. Bring back Ian and Tom! Bring back her friendship with Jen! Bring back her friendship with Jubilee! Bring back Bailey! Bring back her doing good and being happy and gaining self-actualization!!!
I mean, I like the haunted house aspect of the most recent run, but it's not my TYPE of haunted house story. ::pushes a glass off the desk like a cat::
I'm trying to think what else I've read recently that I liked as much as PWAKAH. I always like Silk's solo runs. I'm enjoying "Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver" even though the Wizard is a supremely silly villain. I'm really excited for the return of Strange Academy, even if it is part of the Blood Hunt event which... ugh. I mean, I'm gonna read it all. But Marvel Dracula is such a fuckin' nerd (and he owes Moon Knight money).
OH OH OH! In a RARE FOR ME departure from Marvel, I read DC's graphic novel "Whistle," which I mostly read because I love e.lockhart and also stories about Jewish teenage girls, and I loved it. LOVED it. Highly highly highly recommend.
Also recommend the novel "Winter Soldier: Cold Front." I cried.
I'm still enjoying the current run of Doctor Strange, and everything starting with The Death Of Doctor Strange/Strange Academy in... 2022? 2021? Whenever that was. The DODS: Spider-Man & Black Cat issue is one of my all-time favorite comics issues. I really enjoyed last year's Scarlet Witch run, although I didn't love the Contest of Champions event as much as I wanted to love it.
I enjoyed Avengers Inc. a lot! I do feel like it was hampered by being a miniseries instead of a longer run, because the big reveal(s) weren't given the space they needed to have the gravity and weight they deserved, IMO, given the characters involved and the huge pendulum swing that happened, but. I did enjoy it overall. I like mysteries and I like Janet, so that was fun.
What I'm most looking forward to at the moment is the novel "What If... Wanda Maximoff and Peter Parker Were Siblings?" by @seananmcguire because OH MY GOD. EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT IS MY FAVORITE FOOD. I WANT TO EAT IT ALL RIGHT NOW.
