Remembering British actress and comedienne, Patsy Rowlands, who passed away January 22nd, 2005, aged 74.
Having won a scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, her career spanned more than fifty years. She appeared in nine Carry On films, including the most profitable of all, Carry on Loving, and left an impressive body of work in British television and on stage, in comedy, musicals and quality drama.
She created an enduring comic persona of a slightly desperate, middle-aged single woman on the make, generally working as a secretary or housekeeper, or as in the Please Sir movie, a fellow teacher at Fenn Street in love with Mr Hedges (John Alderton).
She starred opposite Thora Hird in a sitcom based on the Salvation Army, Hallelujah (1983-84), appeared in The Bill, and in 1992 had a memorable cameo as Spudgun's mum, Mrs Potato, in the Rik Mayall/ Ade Edmondson comedy Bottom.
Her final screen credit was for a dramatic role in the family saga, The Cazalets (2001).
She had a great moment with Kenneth Williams in Carry on at Your Convenience (1971). After the WC Boggs and Son works outing, Mr Boggs himself (Kenneth Williams) finds himself unclothed and in the bed of his secretary, Miss Withering. She was given possibly one of the great Carry On lines;
"Don't worry, I know what a man looks like, you know...and you're not all that much different..."

I've thought of some more if you want them.
Muireann O' Donoghue was Little Anne in The Tudors.
Tress MacNeille voiced Anne Boleyn in a 2004 episode of The Simpsons entitled Margical History Tour.
The Last Days of Anne Boleyn was a play written by Michael Fentiman, staged at the Tower in 2018, but I can't find the actress's name.
youtube
This is a fan video of it anyway.
Emma Bunton was Anne in Tim Vine Travels Through Time, in 2017.
In Carry On Henry, from 1971, there are possibly three Annes:
1. Patsy Rowlands is, if I recall, both Anne Boleyn and Anne of Cleves, and beheaded at the start.
2. Joan Sims appears to be a combination of all the queens:
• Katherine of Aragon as she's a foreign princess (French this time) who won't consent to a divorce.
• Anne Boleyn when sent to the Tower to die, even quoting Genevieve Bujold at one point since this is a spoof of Anne of the Thousand Days.
• Jane Seymour as her predecessor Patsy was killed so Henry could marry her.
• Anne of Cleves for being a foreign bride Henry couldn't stand on the wedding night (since she smelt of garlic). Plus her successor is named as Katherine Howard.
• Katherine Howard as the man tortured into confessing to adultery actually is guilty.
• Katherine Parr because Henry decides to execute her then changes his mind.
Although technically I think she's Mary of Guise.
3. Barbara Windsor is Anne and Jane, in that she's just returned to England (but from Spain) with her sister, and that Henry plans to divorce and execute Joan to marry her.
She ends up with Francis!
@snapheart1536
Oh no! You must tell me, I want this to be a complete list…for academic purposes.

Bless This House (Full TV series) 1971-1976
Bless This House centres on life in Howard Road, New Malden, where travelling stationery salesman Sid Abbott and his wife Jean live with their teenagers: Mike is fresh from art college and more pre-occupied with protests than finding a job; and trendy schoolgirl Sally. Sally is 16 at the series' start, and Mike is 18. Sid and Jean constantly battle to comprehend the new generation's permissive ways and are usually out-of-touch. Their neighbours and best friends are Trevor and his wife Betty. Sidney James as Sid Abbott. Jean Abbott's husband and an Arsenal F.C. fan. He likes to believe he is in control of his household, but finds he has to sneak out to go to the football or the pub. He often tries to avoid occasions he doesn't want to attend, but this often backfires on him. Diana Coupland as Jean Abbott. Sid's wife, who believes she can talk him into or out of anything. She always knows what he's up to and sees through his schemes. Robin Stewart as Mike Abbott. Jean and Sid's son, their firstborn. He is an artist but he always avoids employment because "it's a drag." Sally Geeson as Sally Abbott. Jean and Sid's daughter, Mike's little sister. Sid and Jean constantly worry about her relationships with "boys." She calls Sid "Daddy" and Jean "Mummy." Sally married Bless This House producer William G. Stewart in 1976 and had three children during their 10 years of marriage. Anthony Jackson as Trevor Lewis. The Abbotts' next-door neighbour and Sid's best friend. Patsy Rowlands as Betty Lewis. Trevor's wife and Jean's best friend. Jean and Betty usually gang up on their husbands if they don't do the right things. The series was created by Vince Powell and Harry Driver, but mainly written by other hands including Dave Freeman and Carla Lane. Out of the Unknown: Come Buttercup, Come Daisy, Come......? (1.6, BBC, 1965)
"I think I'd plump for science, if I had a choice. Then I could invent things, and be really sure of what I'm doing instead of guessing all the time. I'd direct all my intelligence towards plants and flowers, and concentrate until I made everybody else think about them the same as I do."
"You mean you'd like everybody to be kind to flowers?"
"Yes."
"You're a very unselfish man, Mr. Wilkes."
#Out of the Unknown#Come Buttercup come daisy come......?#Mike Watts#Single play#Classic TV#1965#Paddy Russell#Milo O'Shea#Christine Hargreaves#Patsy Rowlands#Desmond Jordan#Eric Thompson#Bernard Kay#Alan Haywood#Ann Lancaster#Julie May#Nigel Lambert#Jack Wild#I wouldn't be the (insufferable) person I am if I didn't clarify that most sources give only three ellipsis in the title (inc. The BFI sets#But the onscreen title looks to have 5 or 6. So. Now that that's cleared up... (.......). This is a very unusual one; very different to all#The episodes we've had so far. This feels more like one of the weirder Armchair Theatres (actually there is an AT ep about killer plants#But I can't for the life of me remember the title). A potty little story of an amateur gardener with an experimental streak whose floral#Creations are maybe as malevolent as they are impressive. It's silly and slight but fun enough and there's a great cast to hold interest.#Notably several of the cast were better known as comic actors at the time (in particular O'Shea and Rowlands) but it's lovely to see some#Old favourites like Bernard Kay and (a few years before his career defining role as the presenter of thrill filled Road Safety) the lovely#Eric Thompson as local chemist and supplier of some of O'Shea's more questionable plant foods. For all its silliness this has a dark streak#And ends with some puzzling details unresolved and the future disturbingly uncertain... Still I think I'll be happy to go back to space#And aliens and more proper Sci fi for a while...

The Avengers: Series 6, Episode 21 - Love All https://bit.ly/34KsKUH The phrase “pale, stale and male” was still waiting to be coined when this episode was first broadcast on a dark February night in 1969. And you didn’t hear the term “misogyny” on TV much either, particularly not on a Saturday evening entertainment show. But that’s where we are in The Avengers‘ episode Love … Read More »
