Boycott some of these Florida-based businesses!
Some notable examples:
Tourism (Disney World, Universal Orlando, Busch Gardens, etc)
Bealls Outlet Stores
Bloomin' Brands Restaurants (Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba's Italian Grill, others)
Checkers/Rally's
Chewy Inc. (online pet retailer)
Darden Restaurants (Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, others)

Winn-Dixie (grocery store chain)
There are others, and some of these are more common in the southeastern USA (notably Publix & Winn Dixie), but if you can avoid buying from these brands, please consider doing so!
DISCLAIMER: The key words are IF you CAN avoid. Please don't feel guilty if there are necessities that you can only get from certain businesses, like pet medications through Chewy, or the only grocery store in reasonable distance happens to be Publix.
EDIT 06/02/2023:
Back in 2015, the Tampa Bay Rays were one of three pro sports teams (the others being the San Francisco Giants and New England Patriots) to sign an amicus brief in support of same-sex marriage.
If you want to support a FL sports team, that's your go-to!

“Jack Kirby: The King of Comics”
Captain America!  The X-Men!  The Fantastic Four!  The Incredible Hulk!  You know the names, but how many of you know the artist who created these memorable Marvel Comics characters?  Read on, faithful funny book fans, and find out!
Tumblr media
Jack Kirby was born Jacob Kurtzberg in New York City on August 28, 1917.  His artistic career began in 1935, when he got a job working on Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons for Max Fleisher Studios.  He then moved on to drawing comic strips for the Lincoln Newspaper Syndicate, including “Socko The Sea-Dog,” “Abdul Jones,” and “Black Buccaneer.”  He also made money by freelancing for pulp novel illustrations.     Kirby joined the Eisner-Iger Studio in 1938, and his first comic book work appeared in Jungle Comics and Jumbo Comics.  Shortly after, he worked on such characters as Blue Bolt, Blue Beetle, Red Raven, and Captain Marvel (more commonly known today as Shazam).  And it was in 1941 that Kirby debuted one of his first and greatest creations: the patriotic hero Captain America.     After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Kirby resumed his career and contributed his talents to several different comic book publishers, including National Periodicals (later known as DC Comics), Harvey, and Crestwood.  During the late 1940s and early 1950s, he, along with Captain America co-creator Joe Simon, helped produce such titles as Young Romance (the world’s first romance comic), Black Magic (one of the most highly-regarded horror comics of the 1950s), Boy’s Ranch, Boy Commandos, and Star Spangled Comics (which featured Simon and Kirby’s “Newsboy Legion”).     In 1954, Simon and Kirby formed their own comic book company, Mainline Comics.  Together, they published Bullseye, In Love, Foxhole, Police Trap, and Fighting American (which was a parody of their earlier creation, Captain America).  However, their company and partnership ended in 1956.  After a social backlash made parents believe comic books were a bad influence on children, Simon left the industry for a career in advertising.  Kirby stuck with comics.     After a brief return to Prize Comics (formerly Crestwood), Kirby went back to work for DC Comics.  While there, he illustrated numerous sci-fi and mystery titles, most notable of which was one of his latest creations, the non-superpowered superheroes, the Challengers of the Unknown (who made their debut in Showcase #6 before moving onto their own title a year later).  Kirby divided his time between doing comic work and working on the “Sky Masters of the Space Force” newspaper strip to try and make enough money for his family to live on.
Tumblr media
In 1961, Kirby didn’t need to worry about money anymore.  Writer and editor Stan Lee hired Kirby to help him create a line of characters for a new comic book publisher called Marvel Comics.  Kirby (nicknamed Jack “King” Kirby by Lee) created, along with Lee, such classic characters as The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, The X-Men, The Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, and the Silver Surfer.  The only title Kirby didn’t work on was The Amazing Spider-Man (not that he didn’t have a hand in creating the character, but that's another story).  Never before, and never since, has any comic company, or creator, created so many original and important characters as Marvel and Kirby during the 1960s.     Even though Kirby created some of the world’s best-known comic characters, he wasn’t happy.  After almost a decade of feeling he wasn’t receiving as much credit as he should have, he left Marvel in 1969.  Soon after, he returned to DC Comics for a third time.  He joined DC again because they promised him complete control over the titles and characters he created.     1971 saw the debut of Kirby’s epic trilogy of Mister Miracle, The Forever People, and New Gods (which revolved around the father-son conflict between the epitome of evil, Darkseid, and his noble son, Orion).  Also included in the “Fourth World” saga, and used as a link to connect these books to the rest of the DC “universe” was Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen.  Even though they sold moderately well, they were canceled after a couple of years.  It was rumored that since Kirby couldn't recreate his huge success with Marvel, DC thought the books shouldn’t continue.     Though disappointed by DC’s cancellation of his grand epic, Kirby continued on with the company.  He created more mainstream titles like The Demon, Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth, and O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps).  However, these titles failed to attract much attention, either, and Kirby left DC once again.     1976 brought Kirby’s triumphant return to Marvel and, more importantly, his return to one of his earliest creations: Captain America.  But this time, Kirby was not only drawing Cap, but he was also writing the star-spangled hero’s adventures.  Other titles that Kirby wrote, drew, and created during his return included The Eternals, Devil Dinosaur, Black Panther, 2001: A Space Odyssey (based on ideas and concepts from the movie), and Machine Man (which was a spin-off of the 2001 comic).     Around 1979, Kirby vanished from comics for a few years.  He went back to working in the field of animation, providing storyboards and character designs.  The most notable cartoons he worked on were “The Fantastic Four” and “Thundarr The Barbarian.”
Tumblr media
In 1981, Kirby returned to comics.  Avoiding the two big companies (Marvel and DC), he began working for a new independent publisher called Pacific Comics.  His creations there included Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers and Silver Star.  The titles and the company were short-lived.     Some of Kirby’s last comic work was once again at DC Comics.  In 1984, besides working with all the major DC characters in two “Super Powers” mini-series, he was invited back to finish the saga of his Fourth World characters.  The resulting graphic novel, entitled The Hunger Dogs, was released.  Editorial control ran rampant, and the book was a mess of redrawn and rearranged story pages.  Kirby’s final word on the New Gods was nowhere near his original vision.  Resentful from the experience, Kirby’s career was nearing its end.     After a brief stint creating a line of superhero books (called, appropriately enough, “The Kirbyverse”) for another new company in the early 1990s, Topps Comics, Kirby’s final comic, Phantom Force, was for Image Comics in 1993.  It gave new, younger artists a chance to work with one of history’s greatest talents.  The series only lasted eight issues, ending shortly before Kirby’s death on February 6, 1994, at the age of 76.
Tumblr media
With a career that spanned seven decades, Jack Kirby was the most prolific comic artist in history.  He is credited with being one of the most influential creators in the industry, and his influence can be seen and felt in nearly every comic book published today.  Every comic book reader8and creator owes him a debt of gratitude.

Commentary for “Jack Kirby: The King of Comics”
–This was the seventh assignment for my “Writing for Children and Teenagers” correspondence course, which I took through the Institute of Children’s Literature.
–“Darkseid” is pronounced DARK-side, like “dark side of the moon.”
–My teacher called my article a “good, clear job” and said that it “is nicely organized and engaging.”  He also remarked that I had “an enticing opener” and a “good close.”
–My teacher also said, “I feel you have a submittable item with your Assignment 7 piece on Jack Kirby.  It reads well, and you seem to cover the subject nicely.  You engage the reader well by talking to him and asking the occasional question.  Good!”
–I never submitted my article to a magazine for publication.  My teacher said I needed to include a bibliography, but since I was too lazy to go back and track down all of my sources again, I let it slide.  It’s a shame.  I probably could have made a little money doing a series of biographies of famous comic book creators.  Missed opportunity.
–For the most part, I don’t like writing non-fiction.  I don’t like having to cite sources and check for accuracy.  I feel too restricted.  I also fear I might accidentally include something inaccurate, either by citing an unreputable source or for whatever other reason.  I like writing fiction better, where I can do whatever I want without having to verify anything.  Maybe I just like it better because, again, I’m lazy.  Nah.  I like writing fiction better because I get to use my imagination.  Yeah.  Let’s go with that.

Why are Tel Aviv and Washington Inflaming the Situation in the Persian Gulf? During the run-up to the anniversary of the insidious assassination of Iranian General Soleimani – and after one month had passed since the equally controversial massacre of leading nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh – Israel and the United States, which are ones responsible for this atrocity, are demonstratively increasing their military presence in the Middle East, and doing so in demagogic fashion under the guise of fearing “retaliation from Iran”. The United States, located both at a considerable distance from Iran and outside the range of its missiles, having provoked this crisis clearly fears only a missile attack on its diplomatic mission in Iraq, as well as other American facilities in the region. Washington is trying to validate these fears with reports from American intelligence services, according to which pro-Iranian armed formations that can deliver a “retaliatory strike” have allegedly stepped up their activity in Iraq. However, on December 21 Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh denied these suspicions, which especially resounded in recent statements made by US Secretary of State M. Pompeo about the alleged complicity of pro-Iranian militia in the latest rocket strikes executed on Baghdad’s “Green Zone”. Along with that, Khatibzadeh wrote on Twitter that for Tehran “attacks on diplomatic facilities are unacceptable”. Washington still dispatched additional warships and a squadron of fighters to the Middle East, and demonstratively conducted a nonstop flight of a B-52 strategic bomber that has the ability to carry nuclear weapons, by doing so intending to “intimidate Tehran”. In addition, on December 21 a US naval unit entered the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz that included a USS Georgia (SSGN 729) Ohio-class submarine, which carries up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and is capable of taking on board up to 66 special operations service personnel, as well as two Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers: a USS Port Royal (CG 73) and a USS Philippine Sea (CG 58). Previously, at the end of November, a USS Nimitz (CVN-68) aircraft carrier was sent off the Persian Gulf “to help contain the enemy”; this was rationalized by the need “to have additional defensive capabilities in the region in case of any unforeseen circumstances”. As far as Israel goes, it clearly fears a “retaliation strike” from Iran since, given the Jewish state’s modest size, a successful attack on it could actually terminate its existence. This is especially true if the strike were to hit the Dimona Nuclear Research Center, which is considered to be the site where Israeli nuclear weapons originated; Tel Aviv neither confirms nor denies that the center exists. Incidentally, Ayatollah Mohammad-Ali Movahedi Kermani already delivered a warning to Israel that “if Iran decides to put up resistance, then one missile strike on the Dimona reactor would be enough”. It is clear that Iranian missiles will not really be launched at Dimona, since this is fraught with consequences that entail nuclear contamination and destruction not only for Israel, but for Iran and quite a few neighboring countries across the region. And that is why the Iranian media occasionally names another target: the Israeli city of Haifa. Israel, fearing the hysteria itself that potential military action could unleash, in a speech made by IDF Chief of General Staff Aviv Kochavi on December 21 cautioned Iran not to attack Israel, stating that “the Jewish state will retaliate against any aggression”. Along with that, A. Kohavi evidently pointedly forgot to mention that it is not Iran, but Israel itself, that has already demonstrated its aggressive stance toward the Islamic Republic to the whole world by organizing and initiating acts of terrorism and assassinations – and not only against nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. After all, this is far from the first time that Iranian scientists and leading representatives from Iranian society have been killed by an Israeli act of terrorism. For example, in Tehran, five nuclear physicists have been assassinated recently – and this specifically includes Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, the architect of Iran’s ballistic missile program. All this points to the systematic destruction of the best Iranian scientists employed in the defense industry, which is being accomplished by the international community with impunity. This series of assassinations of prominent Iranian scientists, politicians, and military personnel – who ended up being unacceptable for the United States and Israel – substantiates the suspicions first voiced long ago that Western intelligence services and Israel have adopted the terrorist practice of eliminating key personnel and various prominent figures in those countries with which they are at war; this is done to weaken their defense systems and technological potential. In addition to the words it speaks to help deter Tehran, Tel Aviv has taken a series of measures to test the combat readiness of its army against any potential foreign attacks, and is active about consulting with Washington – especially with representatives from the Pentagon – about how to work out joint coordination for the two countries to take military action against Iran. In particular, large-scale, unprecedented exercises came to an end in December, during which the capabilities of the three levels of Israel’s anti-missile defense (ABM) systems to neutralize various air threats were put to the test. Senior Israel Defense Forces officers, according to the Internet publication Breaking Defense, held “negotiations on coordination work” with their counterparts in the US Central Command (CENTCOM, which includes the Middle East) to bolster cooperation between the armed forces in the two countries “against Iran possibly taking revenge in the region”. According to this publication, the IDF has reached its highest degree of readiness, in particular with regard to repelling “some of the 140,000 missiles that Iran-backed Hezbollah has in Lebanon, and the Houthi rebels in Yemen”. At the same time, it has been reported that although the Israeli command does not disclose the details about how it prepares for war, its tactical and operational anti-missile defense systems, and long-range missile systems, are still on high alert. In addition, as reported by The Times of Israel, on December 17, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley arrived in Israel as part of his Middle East tour to discuss the threat that Iran poses to Washington’s allies, including the Jewish state. As part of preventive measures taken against the armed situation in the region potentially escalating, Israel began to actively spread out its naval fleet around Iran. An Israeli Navy Dolphin-class (Type 800) submarine carrying cruise missiles on board passed through the Suez Canal, and on December 21 demonstratively surfaced in the Persian Gulf, in the waters that stretch between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Dolphin is a series of German modified diesel-electric submarines that are specially designed for Israel, and which have from 6-10 torpedo tubes. Besides torpedoes, they are armed with mines and Popeye Turbo SLCM cruise missiles that have a range of up to 1,500 km, and are capable of carrying nuclear charges with a capacity of up to 200 kilotons launched from torpedo tubes. The Israelis regularly keep at least two of their submarines.in the Indian Ocean, in the immediate vicinity of the Persian Gulf. Today, in the assessments made by numerous experts, there is reason to presume that in January 2021, before Donald Trump leaves the White House, a joint American-Israeli missile strike could be launched against Iran, primarily to neutralize Iran’s air defense systems, as well as its nuclear industry facilities. However, while ramping up the degree of military tension in the region Tel Aviv and Washington cannot help but clearly see that Iran does not intend to attack either the United States or Israel. Iran is not in an ideal condition to wage war now, since its economy is seriously undermined by the restrictive measures imposed on its oil sales abroad, as well as by the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, the deficit inflicting its national budget, and the weakening of its national currency. Yes, military operations “against American and Israeli aggressors” can raise patriotic sentiments in the Islamic Republic for a certain period, but they would quickly drain the Iranian economy and militaristic zeal. In addition, hoping for a change in the attitude taken toward it after the White House administration changes, for political and economic reasons it would now be clearly disadvantageous for Tehran to carry out any large-scale “retaliatory strike”. Therefore, the maximum that Tehran is capable of doing today, without causing itself significant damage, is to carry out a special operation against the Israelis involved in the murder of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh – or to inflict a targeted strike on American facilities in the region through its “proxies”. As for the United States, Israel, and their allies taking military action against Iran right now, it should be kept in mind that the Islamic Republic, despite all its existing economic problems, is a pretty tough nut to crack in terms of its military, and aggression against it would have serious costs. And this cost is obviously unacceptable for either Trump or Netanyahu, who intend to keep pursuing their political careers.

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight- Popeye- “The Mighty Navy”
Tumblr media
It’s really interesting to see war-era cartoons in today’s context. They’re a special kind of time capsule that gives modern audiences an idea of the lengths practically everyone in the US did to ensure patriotism during turmoil. This wouldn’t exactly roll over to Vietnam 20 years later, though.
This is the first short to feature Popeye’s soon to be standard Navy uniform, and is a pretty good example of the Fleischer Studio’s Popeye works losing their earlier sporadic edge for more straightforward cartoon shenanigans. It’s actually pretty entertaining to see Popeye try to fit in with a group of drab sailors, and see him be a little behind the times until the need for combat arises, and we get some glorious cartoon action. This is a fun short, with or even without context.

House of the Dolphin:
Why 2022 is Miami’s Year
50 years ago, long before our great nation would be divided by a chicken sandwich, the first Popeye’s would open in Arabi, Louisiana. The infamous Watergate Scandal that would unravel Richard Nixon’s Presidency was just being discovered. Bill Withers had soared to the top of the Billboard 100 with his iconic single ‘Lean on Me’.The Godfather was the highest grossing film at the box office. America witnessed the birth of future stars such as Eminem, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and Sofia Viagara (sorry I’m being told it’s actually spelled Vergara). The year was 1972 and the Miami Dolphins would embark on a perfect season capped off with a Super Bowl Championship.
Fast forward 50 years and 3 weeks in, that same feat is still in play for these Dolphins. Yes it’s early and incredibly unlikely Tua and Co remain unbeaten in a highly contested AFC. But until somebody waxes these Dolphins, it’s fair to speculate if we’re on the precipice of another Miami Championship. Sounds insane right? ‘This is the Bills’ year!’- every insufferable media personality on TV. While the Bills do truly have something special and absolutely fit the…..bill (pun intended? You decide) of a championship contending team, there’s plenty of reason to believe we may witness another AFC East powerhouse lift up the Lombardi next February.
Yes, less than a quarter into the season, that sounds like an overreaction. But insane takes are as much a part of football as corruption is a part of Congress. In approximately 6 hours and 15 minutes this take could age horribly at the hands of Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Until then, we’re going to lay out our airtight case for a Miami Dolphins Super Bowl run. So enough squawking and squeaking, let’s dive in (intended, intended, and intended)!
The Record
Let’s start with the obvious, the Dolphins have a perfect 3-0 record to start the season. They are one of only two teams in the NFL with a perfect record (the other being the Eagles) and are the last remaining unbeaten team in the AFC. However, not all perfect records are created equally. The Giants were undefeated until Monday, but despite their signs of improvement, nobody took them seriously as a Super Bowl threat based on who they beat in the Titans and Panthers. So who have the Dolphins beaten so far?
So who have the Dolphins beaten so far? Longtime AFC East Kingpin Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, Lamar Jackson’s Ravens in Baltimore, and the aforementioned Super Bowl favorite Buffalo Bills. Yeah, a f@#$ing gauntlet of an opening schedule, and they’re still perfect.
That being said, this is far from the first time the Dolphins have started 3-0. Hell even Adam Gase had Miami off to a 3-0 start back in 2018. Adam Gase! Prior to that, the Dolphins had two other 3-0 starts in the 21st century, once in 2013 and once in 2002. The common denominator in those three starts? None of them yielded playoff berths. With that said, we clearly can’t lean on the record alone to make this case, but there’s also:
An Improving Quarterback
Tua Tagovailoa has been rightfully criticized to date in his young career, whether he wants to admit that or not. Still while the salary cap era has helped level the playing field for teams in smaller markets, it has also eroded the patience of Front Offices with young Quarterbacks who need time to grow. The fact of the matter is that the Patrick Mahomes’ and Justin Herberts’ of the world are rare. Most QBs do not come with MVP caliber plays straight out of the box, those accessories are usually sold separately in the form of quality coaching and well-rounded rosters.
To say Tua’s journey to becoming an NFL starter was challenging would be the understatement of the century. Tua’s college career ended both horrifically and prematurely when he dislocated his hip and suffered a posterior wall fracture against Mississippi State. Tua dealt with a variety of injuries during his time at Alabama, but this was certainly the pinnacle of his collegiate adversity and came with a shit ton of rehab heading into his NFL career.
As if College wasn’t tough enough on Tua, he also had the weird part-time starter dynamic with Ryan Fitzpatrick under former coach Brian Flores. Instead of playing and growing through struggles, Tua often got benched mid game so Ryan Fitzpatrick and his magical beard could finish the job. So what do the early returns look like from last year to this year?
2021 Tua (through 3 games)
-2 Touchdowns
-512 Passing Yards
-2 Interceptions
-43.9 QBR
2022 Tua (through 3 games)
-8 Touchdowns (T-3rd)
-925 Passing Yards (2nd)
-2 Interceptions (T-12th)
-82.8 QBR (1st)
Yeah, sign me up for door number 2. There’s no denying the remarkable year over year improvement here. There are a lot of factors can be attributed to this improvement, but undoubtedly one of the greatest impacts on Tua’s growth has to be the
New Weapons
There’s no denying the obvious, adding offensive firepower such as Tyreek Hill, Chase Edmonds, and Raheem Mostert along with a stalwart left tackle in Terron Armstead would make any quarterback better. There’s also the existing rapport and continued growth from Tua’s college teammate Jaylen Waddle, who continues to burn defenses like the pasty kid on a hot summer day.
Can Tua’s improvement be attributed to his weapons and the YAC they provide? Of course, no one is arguing against the impact the talent around him contributes. But despite adverse circumstances and offensive onslaughts from the likes of Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen, Tua and this team have played complementary football and made enough plays to win. Here are just a few of the challenges Tua and these Dolphins have already overcome this season:
-Facing Bill Belichick in Week 1 with a first time Head Coach
-4 total Touchdowns, 318 passing yards and 119 Rushing Yards from Lamar Jackson
-Being down 21 points in the 4th in Baltimore
-497 yards of Bills’ offense
-Over 40 minutes of time of possession from Buffalo
-A Butt Punt (shout to you for the tweet of the day on this one Mark Sanchez)
-A safety (resulting from said Butt Punt) with a minute and a half left in a one possession game
-Tua’s ‘back injury’ *cough cough concussion cough
-Did we mention a Butt Punt???!!!!!
Nobody has ever won a championship in September, but a tell tale sign of a championship culture is overcoming adversity. And in the early goings, the Dolphins have wrestled with plenty of adversity and humped it into submission. On the field, it takes the right players coming together and executing, but the culture that breeds success and brings out the very best of the players wouldn’t be possible without
The Right Coach
First Year Head Coach Mike McDaniel has quickly validated the Dolphins belief in him to take over a franchise with a plethora of assets and a young Quarterback at a fork in the road of his career. The offseason chatter of Stephen Ross entertaining Tom Brady, Sean Payton, and even a rapist to overhaul their franchise certainly couldn’t have instilled much confidence in Tua or a first time Head Coach. Which may explain how a team with so many new faces and so much change has so quickly learned to overcome adversity: they’ve been dealing with it long before the season began.
Before touching down in Miami as the Dolphins’ new HC, McDaniels spent years with the 49ers. He’s coached in the Super Bowl, multiple Conference Championship Games, and was instrumental in Deebo Samuel’s breakout season after an early four game losing streak when their running back room was overwhelmed with injuries. Now with his perfect start to his Head Coaching career, he’s accomplished a feat not seen by this franchise since the Jimmy Johnson days and he did it with f@#%ing swagger.
The Road Ahead
Tonight the stage is set to rekindle an old Alabama/LSU rivalry when Tua, Waddle, and these Dolphins pay a visit to Joe Burrow, Ja’marr Chase, and the Defending AFC Champion Bengals. As has become commonplace for them, the Dolphins are coming in facing adversity. Tua is working back from that vicious hit he took in Week 3, the Defense has to be exhausted from trying to contain the Bills for two thirds of a game, and they’re traveling on a short week. The Dolphins have a long way to go and are going to have to continue proving their resilience every week, but especially so in primetime against a team that almost won the Super Bowl last year.
Still, less than a month into the season, it’s clear the Dolphins have the right guy leading their team. They have a young Quarterback with something to prove. And most importantly, they have a locker room that believes in what they’re doing. So why the hell can’t they go on a run that would make the 1972 team proud?
