Fantastic Four (1961) #41 — Stan Lee, Jack Kirby
Again, I love it whenever superpowers are used for mundane things, haha, like holding up cards in a game of poker.

Ant-Man, Hulk, Loki, and… Paste-Pot Pete(!?)

Fourth Ant-Man story (1958)
Barely worth discussing. Apparently Egghead, a super-smart scientist, is a recurring villain. He makes his own ant psionic-tech and sets out to defeat Ant-Man, which is pretty nifty.
Other highlights include:
Ant-Man has coiled springs in his boots for super jumps. Redundant much? He retains his full-size strength when miniature - he should be capable of power leaping by himself.
He uses a nylon thread as a lasso when fighting full-sizers. Ouch!
Tumblr media
I have no idea when, but I intend to make use of the phrase “to a genius like me your insipid patriotic ramblings are laughable” or some derivative thereof sometime in this life.

Ant-Man strikes a victory with the power of friendship - a Marvel first. Sure, if ants are telepathic then they can understand friendship too, makes sense. …And, for some reason, ants have a conception of crime and what it’s like to be “partners in the war against crime”. Why is Ant-Man a miniature cop*, Paul Rudd how could you lie to me like this.
*Inb4 someone tries to explain it to me: yes, I grok that crimefighting superheroes implicitly endorse a worldview of “the civilized world versus criminal degenerates”, and obviously the CCA wants to push that message really hard too. It's just... Ant-Man is the coppiest of them all! What?!
“Incredible Hulk” (1962, issue 5)
This has two stories in it. We’re skipping the second due to the racisms and Cold War propaganda.
The first is entirely unmemorable, but apparently the villain is recurring. Hulk defeats “Tyrannus”, some prick living in the Hollow Earth who was banished there by Merlin but discovered both the fountain of youth and a subservient humanoid species to construct weapons of war for him. Eh. Been worse stories. Not worth 12c, w/ or w/o the other story.
Fifth Thor story (1952)
Loki’s pranksterish magic tends to make any story better, even if the plot is weak and staid. Such magic includes: trees to tigers, turning vehicles and infrastructure into candy, disarming a nuclear weapon, transmuting infantry weapons into birds… wait, why are we fighting this guy again? He sounds sick?! Oh, also he does whatever this is that he did last time:

During his house arrest on Asgard, Loki scries Thor and learns about Don Blake and the 60-second limitation. They do battle, Loki manages to separate Don and the hammer, but then gets deceived by a cardboard cutout of Thor long enough for Don to grasp Mjolnir once more… like I said, the plot’s weak.

Love that art of the Bifrost, as well as the different depictions of shapeshifting. The idea of Heimdall just letting a snake reverse nutmeg him is ridic, though. I’m not saying I’d notice if that happened to me - maybe it has! - but this is the god appointed to watch the Rainbow Bridge? Really? Well, hm, maybe all Asgardians have shitty perception, given how Loki gets defeated in this issue.
Loki uses hypnosis on Jane, and the narration specifically mentions his transfixing eyes, once again proving that hypnosis is stored in the (eye)balls.
I thought we were skipping these
Yeah, I forgot Paste-Pot Pete gets introduced in one of the Torch solo issues. Paste-Pot Pete! A guy with super-sticky paste that can be fired from a paste gun. It can adhere cars the ground, gum up peoples’ mouths, and even be used to… wait…
Tumblr media
This is basically just a guy with a web-shooter. He’s so utterly, deeply uncool. And yet… I can’t stop thinking about him. I don’t know why!

It's funny, he's been "The Trapster" for over sixty years now (he first used that name in 1965, only one year after his debut as Paste-Pot Pete), but he's been unable to live down a name he barely used, both in-universe and out.
