A Toast to the Roman - Last Binding Series - Oneshot
Ao3 Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/56529883
Summary: âMr Ross.â Shit, Robinâs Baronet tone was out â that was how Alan knew he was in trouble. âDid you sell pornography to my sister on an ocean liner?â
âIn my defenceââ He used his best, most clipped voice. âYour sister bullied me into selling her all the pornography I was carrying. And, if I didnât sell it to her, I believe the fair lady would have stolen it.â
(In which, Robin discovers Alan sold Maud his porn stash, everyone discovers the identity of the Roman and Alan discovers he's responsible for helping start all of their relationships.)
Word Count: 3,473
A Toast to the Roman
It happened on a lazy Sunday afternoon. A lazy Sunday afternoon of a bank holiday weekend. Naturally, the bank holiday meant Maud had been invited back to the Blyth estate from University â and where Maud Blyth went, Violet Debenham followed. Then, because Robin was Robin, he extended the invitation to Lord Hawthorn, to, âmake it something of a party.â
And, where Lord Hawthorn went, Alan Ross seemed to follow.
âThat had been my idea â a friendly party,â Robin had said, when theyâd arrived. He wore that bright, Baronet smile that was impossible to resist. âA reunion, of the Final Contract Crew.â
Alan smiled back, blankly. âThe what?â
âIgnore him,â Edwin appeared from further down the hallway, his arms full of books. âIâve told him, weâre not calling ourselves that.â
âWe need a team name,â Robin said. âDonât you think?â
Alan weighed that up â figuring out who else would be solidly against the idea of a team name, who would be for it, and which side would be for fun to be with â when Jack said, âThis isnât Oxford, Blyth.â
Robin only laughed. He stepped aside, and welcomed them properly into his house. Alan was starting to feel more and more at ease on these estates, and he didnât know how to feel about that. Certainly didnât like becoming accustomed to houses with their own grounds; changing for dinner; days without any plans to do real work. At least he still felt the same zeal to radicalise the staff. At least he would never tire of the way Jack looked at him when Alan did have the clothes to change to dinner: as though he wanted to rip them straight back off and kiss him completely senseless. It was the company â not just Jack, but all of them â that made Alan begrudgingly alright with the whole business. Because they were closer to him than simply friends now. It was like having a second family.
And it was a nice weekend â a good weekend â until Robin leant forward to move a pile of books from the coffee table in the lounge to make room for the chess set, and a purple pamphlet fell out.
There seemed, to Alan, a moment where time stopped, as everyone recognised it. (Purple, Alan thought almost hysterically, was not a very discreet colour.) Theyâd all been half-asleep in the sunshine drifting through the windows, lounging around, totally full of roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. Now, though, they were all awake. He took stock. Adelaide was (mercifully) in the garden. Maud sat in front of the armchair, legs folded under her, with an expression so carefully clueless it looped right round to guilty. Violet actually sat in the armchair, playing with Maudâs hair, an eyebrow raised and a slight smirk on her face. Entertained.
Both Edwin and Robin were sat on the sofa opposite Alan. Well, Robin was leant over, looking at the pamphlet as though it was a dog whoâd slipped the leash and he was trying to catch it solely with his mind. Whilst Edwin was reclining, an elbow on the sofa, his fingers against his temples. He looked faintly sick.
Alan and Jack were on the other sofa. Not close â not practically on top of each other, the way Edwin and Robin always sat. Jack was a respectable distance away, though his arm was over the back of the sofa. If he twitched his hand, he could just graze the back of Alanâs neck â which he deliberately did now. His bad leg was outstretched, his cane against the end of the sofa. He looked impressively uncaring, but there was just a â quirk â to his mouth that showed his amusement.
Alan himself sat on the edge of the sofa, primed like a terrier, and he was desperately trying to school his expression into normalcy. He suspected he was succeeding as well as Maud. He felt nauseous. It was one thing to know that a lot of men had read his pamphlets; it was another thing entirely to come face to face with them â especially when he was good friends with them. Especially when heâd fought alongside them to save Englandâs magicians â England â the world?
âAh,â Robin said. âThatâs Winâs.â
Edwinâs usually colourless face flushed with pink. âRobin!â
âWhat?â Robin smiled, easily, and picked up the pamphlet. He still twisted it, to hide the title. âNo one knows what it is.â
âOkay,â Alan said. He couldnât help it. âEven if we all didnât know what it is, that would only make us more suspicious.â
Jackâs pointer finger traced his neck, and he determinedly did not look at him. No doubt the bastard was smug and smirking. He hated him when he was like that.
âIt truly is the guiltiest thing you couldâve said, Robin,â Violet added.
âIn that caseââ Edwin cleared his throat. âFor the record, itâs not just mine.â
âWait, no.â Now Robin stood, the books discarded, holding Alanâs fucking pornography aloft in one hand. âI can understand Hawthorn and Alan knowing about the Roman. I can even understand Violet. But I would like Maud to explain how she knows.â
Maud ducked her chin, smiling. It was the kind of smile that Alan suspected got her out of a lot of trouble growing up, and he could already see Robin start to relent.
âI happened to stumble upon his works, aboard the Lyric,â she said.
âHow?â Robin pressed.
Maud, bless her, probably tried not to. But she couldnât stop those bright green eyes from flicking to Alan. She might as well have pointed her finger and shouted.
Alan, knowing it was a show of guilt, still looked down. The back of his neck prickled, expecting a nudge from Jack. He didnât, this time, not with Robin staring him down. It was not so much that their relationship was a secret, but they both seemed repelled by physical affection when other people were in the room. (Apart, of course, from longing looks and âaccidental touches.â Perhaps that was part of it.)
âMr Ross.â Shit, Robinâs Baronet tone was out â that was how Alan knew he was in trouble. âDid you sell pornography to my sister on an ocean liner?â
Violet burst out laughing; Maud giggled; even Edwin hid a smirk behind his hand. Jack though, Jack watched Alan with those piercing blue eyes. He had one eyebrow ever so slightly raised, like a challenge.
Alan, though, wondered if it was a good time to bring up the fact that heâd betrayed them all to Edwinâs evil older brother, and made the whole Last Contract business a hell of a lot harder. Surely that would be a good distraction from selling a Baronetâs sister porn.
âIn my defenceââ He used his best, most clipped voice. âYour sister bullied me into selling her all the pornography I was carrying. And, if I didnât sell it to her, I believe the fair lady would have stolen it.â
Maud cried, âThatâs slanderous, Mr Ross!â
Robin, though, rolled his eyes, as though he wasnât truly angry. âMaudie. You canât bully people into selling you things.â
âIn my defenceââ Maud sat up, even straighter, her dark hair falling out of Violetâs grasp. It fell around her shoulders in a soft wave. âIt made for the most amusing evening we had on that ship.â
âOh, thatâs very true,â Violet added, nudging Maudâs shoulder with her knee. Her smile was dazzling. âWho knew Lord Hawthorn would make such a good character in a Roman pamphlet?â
Robinâs eyebrows rose in interest, looking over them all. Even Edwin looked intrigued. They were both, no doubt, using their imagination, given their familiarity with the Romanâs work. Alan was regretting eating so many roasted parsnips, because they were surely going to be making a second appearance. Â Even that would be preferable to them guessing at the intricacies of their relationship.
It didnât help, of course, that Jack looked so calm about it all â so uncaring â so fucking smug, when he said, âIndeed.â
Alan wanted to bite him, like a cobra. Unfortunately, thinking about biting Jack; about pouncing on his neck and sinking his teeth in; also sent a sting of pleasure through him. Because, hell, when they were alone these days, they alternated between playing out the Romanâs greatest hits and coming up with the inspiration for the next one. Because hadnât Jack been folded into each of those stories anyway? What was the point of pretending otherwise?
Robin, at least, seemed at a loss. He nodded. Took a breath. Tried, Alan thought, to still be the indulgent, carefree older brother he always was. He twisted the pamphlet in his hand, hitting it in his other palm. Eventually, he sat back down on the sofa. Edwinâs knee nudged his own, in support.
âAlright,â he said. âIâm not happy about it, but alright. That does explain my question. Thank you.â
Edwin rested his cheek on his knuckles, looking Alan over as though he wanted to study him. He decidedly did not like being the centre of attention in this way â it was even worse than being dressed in fine clothes and trotted out to dinner.
âIâm sorry, Robin,â he murmured, and tried to look suitably embarrassed. Really, his mind was thinking back to that night on the ship. Was placing bull horns on the sides of Jack Alstonâs head. Would there be any way to convince him to play that part properly, one day? To hear him rumble âCesare,â in his ear, when he caught hold of him? When he lifted him bodily, as though he weighed nothing and had Alan completely at his mercy.
He had to shift, on the sofa.
Jack. Whose eyebrow raised a step further. Alan narrowed his eyes in reply.
âAllow me,â Jack said, in that low murmur. It was as much of a âplease,â as he could ever give. It was the fact that he asked at all, which cut through Alanâs core. The asshole wouldnât give Alanâs secret away without his permission. Now that he thought about it, he did want to see their reaction.
He nodded.
âWhat?â Edwin asked, his tongue sharp and his eyes sharper.
Jack, bastard that he was, drew the moment out. Settled himself even further into the sofa, adjusting his leg again, and tilting his chin ever so slightly up in that lordly fashion.
âBooks are best read by their authors,â Jack said. He pinched the back of Alanâs neck. Just enough to sting. He had to bite his tongue to stop from laughing. His cheeks bloomed with heat.
There was another moment. A long moment. Edwin looked faintly sick again, his face colourless, his eyes flicking from Alan to Jack. Robin had stopped moving entirely, a half-smile frozen on his face, as though he was expecting them to say it was all a joke. Maud, though, had her hands pressed to her mouth, and looked ecstatic. Violet had hold of Maudâs tresses again, and looked suitably impressed. It was as though Alan writing pornography earnt him more respect, in her eyes, than saving them all from crazy magicians.
Jack, though, Jack looked smug. His hand had stayed just against the back of Alanâs neck. It felt like a claim. Like heâd decided to undress Alan in front of the whole room, and, just like when Jack actually undressed him, it filled him with equal parts embarrassment and excitement. Because everyone in this room was somewhat acquainted with the Roman, and they knew what that implied. Werenât just placing them both in one of those pamphlets, but confirming it for a fact. Â
It should bother him more, that heâd exposed not only his own writing, but his own tastes. But, Maud had let slip too many details about her own love life to Alan â and Jack commiserated his pain from Violetâs chats â and from Robin and Edwin determinedly not looking at each other, he guessed they all had their own tastes. That, at least, meant none of them were alone.
âYou donât meanââ Robin started.
âYou?â Edwin asked.
Alan grinned. He couldnât help it. He opened his hands, his fingers splayed. It was different to admit it when he wasnât teasing Jack Alston. (When he wasnât trying to fuck Jack Alston.) It gave him a slight thrill, though, to have this knowledge over everyone. To know that even men like Robin, magicians like Edwin, read his work. And liked it.
From behind Maudâs hands came a delighted giggle. Her eyes shone like jewels. Alan looked at her. He couldnât help it. He flicked his eyelid in a wink. She giggled more, ducking her chin.
Robin rubbed a hand over his face, laughing soundlessly, still seeming dazed. âBut youâreââ
âOlder than I look.â Alan leant back, into Jackâs hand. Felt his finger press against the bone of his neck. It sent warmth rushing down his back.
âItâs remarkable, isnât it?â Jack said. Smug, and, if Alan wasnât losing his mind, a little proud too. Jack Alston was proud of him. It shouldnât make him feel like a dog with a bone.
Robin thumped back against the sofa. He still held the pamphlet, and he let it uncurl. Alan got a glimpse at the title; it was the latest. He was still a subscriber, then.
âDamn,â he said. His dark eyes roved over Alan again, and he felt his heart squirm. It was unfair how attractive Robin Blyth was. Doubly unfair that he was much too nice to be in any of Alanâs pamphlets. âYouâre a skilled writer, Alan.â
Violet snorted. She finished tying off Maudâs plait. âPlease â are you going to wax lyrical about his descriptive writing?â
âWell, it is descriptive.â
Edwin took a folded wooden chess set from the table, and tapped Robinâs leg with it in rebuke. Alan bit his tongue harder, a chill running down his spine by the fact that Jackâs hand was still on his collar.
âIt might interest you to know, then,â Edwin said, casually, with just a single sly look at Alan. âThat the Romanâs writings played somewhat of a role in Robin and I starting our relationship.â
He said it like a poker player placing a winning hand. It certainly felt like that. For a moment, Alan couldnât breathe.
He supposed it made sense. After all, theyâd all recognised the purple pamphlet here, didnât they? It was a discreet way of asking if someone else was of a similar persuasion, and he was sure it happened a lot. But, stillâ
âIs there anyone here who is not in a relationship because of my bloody pornography?â he asked.
âThatâs a fine discussion to be having.â
Saints alive, it was Adelaide. Back from the garden, and peering into the lounge. Alan wanted to shrivel up like a raisin on the spot, and never be heard from again, especially with the way she was looking at them all. Thank God for the Blyths, and their infectious laughter. It dissolved most of the awkwardness in the room.
Adelaide looked at them all. She shook her head, and said, deliberately, âI will be reading in my room, if anyone needs me.â
âIâm sorry you had to overhear that,â Robin spoke for the group.
She shook her head again, and disappeared. It left them all looking at each other like guilty children. At least Adelaideâs appearance had knocked some of the smug from Jackâs expression. Alan sat back a little, on the sofa, and felt another possessive graze of touch on the back of his neck. It had answered his question. At least Robin finally had the sense to put the pamphlet back between the books, and pile them up underneath the table, and Edwin had busied himself in setting up the chess board. As Alan watched him, he couldnât help but wonder â just which of Edwinâs copies of his work were the most well-thumbed? Did he and Robin play them out, too?
Edwin glanced up at him. Alan looked away. He definitely shouldnât let his mind wander there.
Evidently, it was playing on Violetâs mind too, because she said, âI, for one, am very glad we can all share these details about our sex lives.â
Alan winced; he saw Edwin shake his head, determinedly, where Robin outright groaned.
âNo, thank you,â he said.
âOh, donât be such a bore,â Maud said, tugging her new plait over her shoulder.
âMaudie.â Robin looked at her.
Maud got his meaning. She wrinkled her noise. âOh no, youâre right. Letâs not.â
âThatâs hardly fair, when I have to listen to Miss Debenham regale me with her stories,â Jack said. He had that fake disgruntled tone, which showed he wasnât actually cross.
âThatâs what friends do, Lord Hawthorn.â Violet ruined her air of manners and dignity by sticking her tongue out.
Alan laughed. He couldnât help it. The sick feeling had given way to heady one; heâd been met with acceptance; with almost too much eagerness. But it was a secret they were all in together â just like magic, Alan supposed. That was why he felt so giddy. It was so ridiculous. It was ridiculous that he was able to have this conversation at all.
Ridiculous, and yet â it was a secret he could never share with his family. A secret that he was oddly glad to share with this family. His other family. It made him feel confident â powerful â like heâd earnt his place here.
He didnât want to read too much into what that meant.
âI certainly will be reading the Roman in a new light.â Edwin finished setting up the board. He made the first move, with white, and rested his elbows on his knees as he waited for an opponent.
It definitely wasnât going to be Alan. The more he played of chess, the less he liked it. He resolutely sat back, trying not to look too much like a cat with the cream. He was giddy, now; giddier from Jackâs proud look and smug smirk. Jack was proud that heâd landed the Roman.
It was Jack who made the move against Edwin. They looked at each other, and Alan suspected it would be a tense match. He nudged Jackâs elbow with his own, when he moved forward. He got a glimmer of those blue eyes on him.
âI know I certainly will be.â That was Maud, also looking far too smug â far too happy about who she could imagine in those pamphlets, now.
âYou shouldnât be reading them at all,â Robin replied â as though he was the epitome of innocence.
âIâm a grown woman, Robin.â
The two glared at each other. Silently, Edwin leant forward to move another chess piece. Jack followed suit. Theyâd exchanged three moves each by the time Robin stood, clapping his hands on his knees as though that concluded the conversation. (Which meant heâd lost the argument to his sister, Alan noticed.)
âI do have questions, though,â Robin continued. He was heading to the cabinet, and thank fuck for that, because that was where the liquor was kept. Alan felt like a drink. He eyed the sparkling glasses, because it was the only safe thing to keep his eyes on.
âI will not be answering any questions about practicality,â Alan said.
Violet laughed again. Jack made a move that clearly lost him his bishop.
Robin was pouring drinks on the sideboard. His cheeks were actually a faint pink, as though he was embarrassed.
âThat wasnâtâŠâ He seemed to be pretending to be more occupied in getting each shot of brandy even. âI rather meant about â where your ideas originate.â
âNo,â Alan said. âNot today. Certainly not whilst Iâm sober enough to remember. Tihank you.â
Which, at least, got a chuckle out of Jack. Alan kicked his good ankle, and was pleased to see that he left a shoe mark on his Lordshipâs trousers. He would not even look at Edwin â still soundly winning against Jack â because he was sure there would be some knowing there.
Robin looked suitably cowed and apologetic (for the time being), as he handed out the glasses. They really were fine things; crystal-clear glass with patterns cuts into them; the likes of which the Rossi family would likely never own.
He really did live in two worlds.
âCan we have a toast though?â Robin asked. Asked Alan, and actually waited for him to nod, cheeks still hot. He was rewarded with another of those bright, Blyth smiles. âWell then, a toast to the Roman â for how hisâŠdescriptive literature brought us all together.â
Brought them all together, indeed, Alan thought, as they raised their glasses in unison. The brandy glowed golden in the sunlight coming through the windows. It was warm, kicking Alanâs throat on the way down.
But he was smiling.
And that, he thought, was pretty fantastic.

Tumblr is trying SO hard to post the video I took, so Iâm hoping to nudge it along with another post. (#oldschooltricks) The World Cupâs been on in the background off and on this week, but today Iâm downtown with Adelaide and the Denver brother-in-law for a little bit of a block party. Theyâve got 5th street closed off and beer tents up and weâve actually got a pretty good view. Plus thereâs a dead ringer for Wild Bill Hickock watching from the window of a neighboring building and Adelaide got him to wave at her, so a little bonus entertainment. No scoring yet.

I don't know if you've done this before, but I wanna know how you'd order the (canon) mercs from most to least favorite.
Oh, strewth, I haven't done this before!
Sniper, obviously. My skrunkly. I want to make him a warm meal and let him nap for awhile. I'd like to go croc spotting with him. Fishing, too. Take him out to the South Alligator and fish for barramundi. Also discuss sniper shit because it's been a few weeks and I miss it. My sheila can supervise us and make sure we don't end up biffing because when you get two headstrong, competitive blokes together that has a tendency to happen. Also because he has a foot on me and would absolutely kick my arse and probably chuck me overboard for the crocs. She's there for my protection, not his.
Scout. This poor lad has been through so much shit. He deserved a better dad, a better childhood. We could talk baseball. My dad's American (NorCal) so I grew up an SF Giants fan (also an Adelaide Giants fan). Growing up in Alice Springs I'd play baseball with the American kids from Pine Gap and when I went back to the US I played baseball there too, so I know a bit about baseball. I'm sure we could keep each other entertained. I also love music from the 50s-70s so I would sing Tom Jones songs with him.
Spy, the faguette. A cunt for leaving his son but I also understand why he did it. If we were mates I'd nick his darts. I bet he flavours them (and I have a deep affection for rum-flavoured cigarillos). Probably has a nice humidor and everything in his study. I don't even have a humidor. I don't care for wine but I'm keen on discussing liquors with him, especially any whisky and scotch. I'd nick a bottle of Macallan from him when he's not looking and he'd cut my fingers off for it later. We can invite Sniper and Demo for booze tasting. I also want to know what cologne he uses to hide the stink lines.
Medic. Absolute madcunt. He makes me wish I actually ended up going to medical school (Christ, could you imagine me as a doctor?) Upmost respect for his chaos. I want him to crack my skull open and lobotomise me while I'm working. Would let him literally rearrange my guts. He has the level of cunning and improv that I wish I had. Suave cunt that can talk his way out of any situation.
Engineer. A workaholic who never rests. A good ol' southern boy. He reminds me of my older brother. I want to discuss southern shit with him. Unhealthy fried foods, summer fairs, mustering cattle (but he'd call it wrangling). I would kill for him to grill me a steak. I'd love to talk to him about rodeos and cutting horses. I'd love to see him ride a horse. I'd love to race horses with him.
Demoman. Another workaholic who just wants to make his mum proud to the point of his own detriment. His personality reminds me of my mate Jack. Fun-loving with a cocky attitude and pride in what he does and a penchant for explosives. We could have a few beers and exchange ghost and monster stories. My dad went to sniper school in the Marines and was the top of his class but he never got to finish it because he caught malaria, almost died, and by the time he recovered he'd missed his final testing and it was time to ship out. They made him a grenadier, so he'd lugged an M79 grenade launcher through the jungle from 1968 to 1969 when he went home. He loved it. My dad would love to talk bloopers with him.
Heavy. A man who go to hell and back for his family and those he loves. It's not that I don't like him. He just scares me. He could break me in half like a twig. I'd rather swim in the South Alligator than face him on the battlefield. I would love to discuss history and literature with him, though. I hope he could translate classic Russian literature for me.
Pyro. A little maniac with a hot streak. Much like Heavy, Pyro bloody scares me. He gives me the vibes of inviting me to a tea party (which I'd accept) and then cutting off my hand when I refuse sugar. I would constantly be on edge. That said, he'd always have a light, so it can't be too bad.
Soldier. A character I wish we got to see a better side of. I'm sorry! I reckon I just see "stupid military man" too much in media and it kinda stings since 1) the military (both US and AUS) have really high standards for entry, and 2) my dad is a Marine and without doubt the smartest person I've ever met. He taught me to shoot and he was doing the windage calculations in his head. I have to write it down. I can't even do it in my head. He was only trained as a sniper for a few months and I've been doing this for 3 years and he's still better than I could ever hope to be. Yes, I'm aware Soldier wasn't actually in the military, the stigma just... stings, I suppose? For a non-canon deviation, I love what Emesis Blue did with him. Kept his personality without making him a complete dumb cunt. He felt like Soldier but still capable, a complete dumb cunt in personality but still cunning and what you'd expect of a mercenary. "What are you, blind? Come on! Right here! Take your best shot!" -My dad, probably, before he was shot in the head by a Viet Cong sniper.

The sea fig, ch. II, Adela.
(second chapter <3)
The sun was setting when Adelaide returned to her room. It had been a week since she first stepped into her auntâs homestead, and she was still adjusting to how different London was to her homeland. The room was still showered with remnants of twilight, brightened by the light green of the walls. It didnât have much furniture; by the south side was a bed, supplied with a swan feathered mattress and pillows and furred covers that contrasted nicely with the wood of the headboard. A wardrobe stood by the west well, and where the floor raised in a platform sat a simple bathtub. The north side held most of the windows, and a desk with a looking glass and some parchment alongside it. Though it was different from her room in Normandy, she enjoyed how simple it was.
Had she been in Normandy she would have lulled herself to sleep listening to the crashing waves, or the sounds of the city filling the air. London wasnât much different, admittedly. While during the day it seemed dull and uninteresting, when darkness set its rule and the moon showed her face the city lit up. The alehouses represented much of the nightâs entertainment, and the bustling sounds reached her windows, leaving her longing for something other than the stillness of the castle.
Her aunt and her ladies in waiting provided a good distraction, and quickly she had sparked up a friendship with Gytha, with which she spent the nights in pleasant conversation. Sometimes they were joined by Aelfwynn, though she appeared busier than Gytha.
Adela undressed and put on her nightgown, waiting for Gythaâs company as she brushed her hair by the desk. After a few minutes of silence finally the door opened, and she smiled as she saw Gytha enter her room.
âI am sorry if I couldnât wait for you, I just needed to get out of that dressâ.
Gytha let out a soft chuckle as she closed the door and she sat on her bed, her blonde hair now goldened by the candleâs lights.
âI imagined, sorry if I was late, your aunt needed me and Aelfwynn to sort out some fabrics.â
In a moment Gytha and Adela were deep in conversation, talking about each other and their lives until then. Gytha had much to tell about Denmark, how different it was from England and its people, and Adela in return talked about Normandy and how different they were from Frankia as a whole, how her people lived in relative peace and convivence.
âOf course it isnât all sunshine, admittedly many Frankish Lords dislike us, but we also have some powerful allies like our cousins in Aquitaineâ.
âOh, so I guess there are Earls like Godwin everywhereâ.
Adelaideâs interest was sparked when Gytha mentioned that name, and she couldnât help but want to satisfy her curiosity.
âIsnât he the right hand of the Queen and King alike?â
Gytha scrunched up her nose, shaking her head. âHe certainly plays the part. He does his job well, but never trust him too muchâ.
Adelaâs mind went back to something her Aunt Maude once told her. It was about her grandfatherâs father: William Longsword. He had been a good ruler, but too trusting of the other. That was his demise.
Gytha suddenly shifted and looked at her with a glimmer in her eyes.
âYou ask an awful lot of questions, but never tell anything about yourself. All this talk of Normandy wonât fool me! Now you shall tell me about this Duke of Lyonnaiseâ.
Adela laughed a little and shrugged, not very entertained by the tale of the less amusing nuisance in all of Frankia.
âThere is not much to tell, he is uninteresting but a good party. There is a man who I like much more, the Duke of Blois. But my family dislikes his, and my father would not have that union.â
âDid you love him?â
âNo, I wouldnât say I did. I just liked him far better. It wouldnât be wise for a woman such as me or you to do more than like any manâ.
âAnd yet Queen Emma and my uncle seem to have found more than just liking in each otherâ
âYou are not wrong. But thatâs rare, and the one exception that confirms the rule.â
âAnd donât you hope to have⊠something more?â
Adelaide moved to answer but stopped herself. She had never thought about something more; yes, she had many examples in her family of people who married and loved each other, namely her forebearers Duke Rollo and Princess Gisla. She had been married to him by her father to form an alliance, and had fallen so deeply in love with each other that many Norman tales and songs still told of their love and how beneficial that union had been for both Normandy and each other. Their son William Longsword had found love in both his first wife Sprota and then Liuthgarda, who responded in treachery. Her grandfather Richard the Fearless had loved her grandmother Gunnora, and then his many mistresses, with which he had produced some of her uncles. And her parents themselves were very happy with each other. Despite coming from a line of people who had found love in their partners, that something more wasnât what she saw in her life. Since she was a girl, she had been educated in all matters regarding the politics of her lands as was Norman costume. Her greatest desire had always been to form a beneficial alliance for Normandy, and maybe marry in the confines of Frankia, as to not stray away from her beloved Rouen.
Gythaâs question wasnât one she had ever considered, that something more for her looked more like being fortunate to find a man whoâd allow her to rule beside him whatever land would welcome her as its own. She found herself grow uncomfortable, her guts stirring for a question that had been innocent and yet had cracked a chasm where she had always found sure footing.
âI donât know whatâs more, Gytha. It isnât in me. My Aunt was kissed by fortune, but I have never thought of more and I⊠donât even know if I want itâ.
Gytha looked at her with a knowing look, and smiled a little.
âLet me tell you, you resemble a lot your aunt when you make that faceâ.
They ended up giggling and changing subject, concentrating in lighter chatter. Adela was grateful to have Gytha with her, a friend with which she could be herself and not be judged as too harsh to be ladylike. Maybe her exposure to her aunt as her lady in waiting made it easier, or the fact that she was a Dane, but she didnât seem to mind Adelaâs sharp words and observation. And she genuinely liked Gytha, who was fun and gentle and kind.
When it was late enough they realized it was time to retire, and though they didnât want to put a stop to their fun it was time to rest. They were exchanging the last few words before Gythaâs exit when a sound caught their attention.
They stopped talking and realized it came from the city. It was the scream of a woman, a horrifying wail that made Gytha and Adelaide rush to the window and open it. A few guards were already covering the area, and they couldnât see what was happening behind the entrance arch that sheltered them from the view. In a mix of curiosity and fear the two made for the door so they could at the very least ask the guards some informations, when outside their corridor they met Earl Godwin.
âLadies, stay in the room and do not get out for any reason. If in need of anything I will place guards outside your doors, though now I must hurry and call Queen Emmaâ.
Gytha nodded and moved to close the door, but Adela prevented it by holding the door in itâs place.
âWhat is happening?â
Earl Godwin was taken aback by her questioning, recognizing in her the same mannerisms he had only seen in the Queen before now.
âThe Dane priest Cynleaf was killed; we are assuming the attack was provoked by another Dane in the alehouseâ.
Adela could sense Gytha gasp and tense behind her, and soon the Earl left them. They ended up spending the night together in Adelaâs room, with guards outside the door and the chaos of the city muffled by the windows now closed.
Gytha had succumbed to sleep almost instantly, leaving Adela alone with her thoughts. Before she fell asleep, her agitated mind kept circling between the events of the night and Gythaâs words.
He certainly plays the part.

Jestiny and Adelaide and or Jenna and either Jess or Tracey :) -Banjo
TY BELOVED excuse me for scrambling in late because i forgot to answer these.
adelaide probably one of the more fun and functional ship options that could exist for jestiny tbh. confirmed that adelaide is into hot and crazy and violent, so weâre a go there. and she is already good at taking jestinyâs flightiness and erraticism in stride better than most. hell, sheâs jestinyâs only consistent friend and the first person to charm her into a conversation that isnât miserable for both parties. (yes itâs primarily because the conversation doesnât get much more deep and personal than sex jokes but.) tbh the only possible deal breaker xander (made jestiny do yoga that time she will never forgive). when your feral opossum girlfriend wonât stop hissing at your golden retriever boyfriend.
(that being said adelaide and xander probably 100% hook up with jessie and john at some point in the hl&s verse but they are very, very clear about the fact this does not mean theyâre forming a polycule theyâve seen how that turns out.)
tracey and jenna would fail to get off the ground for. largely the same reasons jenna for her part would be interested in the first place, tracey is very incisive and discerning in her cynicism but. thatâs also going to be directed at jenna as the exact kind of morally bankrupt dressed up in nice language type tracey takes issues with. she isnât going to have much patience for her edgelord moral relativism, as much as jenna would love sitting around hearing all traceyâs witty and pessimistic musings about society. thatâs before even touching the fact traceyâs canon stance is wanting fewer mad scientists around.
and jess would probably have even less patience for jennaâs annoying âletâs over intellectualize everythingâ habit and not even begin to entertain it. but, at least theyâre both extremely personally annoyed by jacob so thatâs something they can bond over. maybe a behind the veteranâs center spite hookup in the cards for them idk
#sorry to jenna and tracey but. when tracey says the last thing these hicks need is someone who knows what theyâre doing.#jenna is the someone who knows what theyâre doing#i was going to say the only other issue with jestiny and adelaide is who wears the strap but. itâs 2024 the bottom wears strap too#(jestiny pretends she doesnât hear the flag burning socialist thing they donât talk politics)

Planning a party in Adelaide is an exciting endeavor, but ensuring that the entertainment is top-notch can be a challenge. Whether you're hosting a birthday bash, wedding reception, corporate event, or a family gathering, having the right entertainment can make all the difference in creating unforgettable experiences for your guests.
In this guide, weâll explore the various options available for party entertainment in Adelaide, provide expert tips, and showcase some of the best performers and services that guarantee a memorable event.
Why Party Entertainment Matters
When planning any event, the success often hinges on the quality of entertainment provided. Good entertainment not only keeps your guests engaged but also helps set the tone and mood of the event.
Adelaide, known for its vibrant culture and arts scene, offers a wide range of party entertainment options, from live bands to magicians, to suit any theme or occasion.
Benefits of Hiring Professional Entertainment
Elevates the Party Atmosphere â Professional entertainers can captivate your guests, creating an electric atmosphere.
Customized Experiences â Many entertainers in Adelaide can tailor their performances to suit the theme or vibe of your event.
Stress-Free Planning â Hiring experienced professionals reduces the pressure on hosts, ensuring that all guests have a good time.
Engages Guests of All Ages â A diverse entertainment lineup can cater to the interests of everyone attending the party.
Types of Party Entertainment in Adelaide
1. Live Bands and Musicians
One of the most popular forms of party entertainment is live music. Adelaide is home to a vast array of talented musicians, offering styles ranging from jazz, rock, and pop to classical and acoustic performances.
Local Bands: Hiring a local band can bring a unique flavor to your event. From energetic cover bands that get everyone dancing to mellow acoustic groups for more intimate gatherings, live music is sure to enhance the party vibe.
Solo Musicians: For smaller, more intimate parties, consider hiring a solo musician. Guitarists, pianists, or vocalists can provide soothing background music or lively tunes, depending on your eventâs needs.
DJ Services: For a more dynamic and modern music experience, a professional DJ in Adelaide can curate a playlist that will keep your guests dancing all night long. Many DJs offer customizable playlists, ensuring that your favorite songs and genres are featured.
2. Magicians and Illusionists
For those looking to add a bit of mystery and wonder to their party, hiring a magician or illusionist can be a hit, especially for family-friendly events. Adelaide is home to many talented performers who specialize in close-up magic or stage shows that will leave your guests in awe.
Close-Up Magic: Perfect for cocktail parties or mingling events, close-up magicians move among the guests, performing sleight-of-hand tricks that will mesmerize.
Stage Performances: For larger parties, a stage magician can perform a set of illusions, combining humor, drama, and magical surprises.
3. Clowns, Face Painters, and Balloon Artists
If youâre planning a party for children, or want to bring out the inner child in adults, hiring clowns, face painters, and balloon artists is a great way to keep everyone entertained. These entertainers add a colorful, fun, and interactive element to any event.
Clowns: Professional clowns in Adelaide are skilled at making everyone laugh, offering performances that include juggling, balloon twisting, and light-hearted humor.
Face Painters: Whether itâs a superhero theme or a fairy-tale-inspired event, face painters can transform kids (and willing adults) into fantastical characters.
Balloon Artists: Balloon artists can create intricate and fun designs on the spot, providing unique keepsakes for guests.
4. Comedians and Impersonators
Laughter is a key ingredient to any successful party, and hiring a comedian or impersonator in Adelaide can ensure your guests are in stitches throughout the event. Whether it's a stand-up comedy set or an impersonation of famous personalities, this type of entertainment is ideal for corporate events, birthday parties, or even weddings where humor is welcome.
Stand-Up Comedy: Adelaide has a thriving comedy scene, and many comedians can tailor their act to suit your event's audience, delivering witty jokes, funny anecdotes, and crowd interaction.
Impersonators: From celebrity look-alikes to professional impersonators of iconic characters, these performers can add a touch of glamour and humor to your party.
5. Fire Performers and Dancers
For something truly spectacular, consider adding fire performers or dancers to your entertainment lineup. Fire performers, whether juggling or breathing fire, create a visually captivating experience for your guests, while dancers can energize the crowd with high-energy performances.
Fire Shows: Adelaide's professional fire performers create mesmerizing acts that combine danger, skill, and beauty. These performers are fully trained and prioritize safety, making sure your guests are safe while enjoying a breathtaking spectacle.
Dancers: From traditional cultural dancers to modern and street-style dance troupes, hiring dancers can add an energetic dynamic to your event. Whether itâs belly dancing, breakdancing, or even ballet, dancers can match the theme of your party.
Tips for Choosing the Best Party Entertainment in Adelaide
Selecting the right entertainment for your event requires thoughtful consideration. Here are some tips to ensure your party stands out:
Understand Your Audience: Make sure the entertainment you choose is suitable for your guest demographic. For example, clowns and face painters might be perfect for childrenâs parties, but live bands and DJs may better suit a wedding or corporate event.
Set a Budget: Entertainment can vary greatly in cost, so it's important to set a clear budget early on. Keep in mind that professional entertainers come with different price points based on their experience and performance duration.
Check References and Reviews: Before hiring, read reviews or ask for references. Many entertainment companies in Adelaide have online portfolios or videos that showcase their performances.
Book Early: Adelaideâs entertainment scene is bustling, and the best performers often book up months in advance, especially during the busy wedding and holiday seasons.
Conclusion: Making Your Event Unforgettable
No matter the occasion, adding exceptional party entertainment in Adelaide is the key to creating a memorable experience for your guests. Whether itâs the charm of live music, the magic of illusionists, or the excitement of fire performers, choosing the right entertainment can transform your event from ordinary to extraordinary.
Start planning early, consider your audience, and donât hesitate to invest in professional services to ensure your party is the talk of the town. For more information visit us: https://www.entertainmentadelaide.com.au

How To Choose The Best Decking For Your Climate And Lifestyle?
Picture this: a sunny afternoon in Adelaide, the BBQ sizzling, and your family gathered on your dream deck. But waitâbefore sending out invites for that housewarming party, letâs talk decking.Â
Choosing the right decking material isnât just about aesthetics; itâs about ensuring your deck can handle Adelaideâs unique climate and fit seamlessly into your lifestyle. So, letâs dive into how you can make the best choice for Best Decking Adelaide!
Understanding Your Climate: Why It Matters
Adelaide is known for its Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Your decking material must withstand this weather without fading, warping, or becoming a hazard. But itâs not just about surviving the weather; itâs about thriving in it!
Timber Decking: A Classic Choice with a Twist
Timber decking is a popular choice for many homes in Adelaide. Itâs naturally beautiful and adds warmth to any outdoor space. However, not all timber is created equal.Â
Hardwoods like Merbau and Spotted Gum are great options for decking Adelaide because theyâre dense and naturally resistant to termites and decay. But remember, timber requires regular maintenanceâlike staining and sealingâto keep it looking its best.
Composite Decking: The Low-Maintenance Marvel
If spending weekends sanding and sealing isnât your idea of fun, composite decking might be your perfect match. Made from wood fibres and recycled plastic, composite decking is incredibly durable and resistant to the harsh Adelaide sun.Â
It wonât warp, splinter, or require much more than a quick wash to stay looking fresh. Plus, itâs an eco-friendly option for those who want to minimise their environmental impact.
PVC Decking: The Ultimate in Weather Resistance
PVC decking is another great option for decking Adelaide, especially if your deck is exposed to direct sunlight or moisture.Â
This material is 100% plastic, so itâs highly resistant to water, mold, and mildew. PVC decking is also incredibly lightweight and comes in various colours and styles, so you can get the look you want without worrying about the weather taking its toll.
Lifestyle Considerations: Tailoring Your Deck to Your Needs
Your deck isnât just an extension of your home; itâs an extension of your lifestyle. How you plan to use your deck should play a significant role in your choice of material.
Entertaining: Space and Durability
If you love hosting parties, youâll want a deck that can handle heavy foot traffic, furniture, and the occasional spill. Composite and PVC decking are ideal for entertaining because theyâre durable and low-maintenance.Â
You wonât have to worry about stains from food or drinks, and theyâre sturdy enough to support all your guests without showing wear and tear.
Family-Friendly Decking
Safety is a top priority for families with kids. Timber can be a great choice, but itâs essential to keep it well-maintained to prevent splinters.Â
Composite and PVC decking offer smoother surfaces less likely to cause injury. Plus, these materials are slip-resistant, making them safer for little ones running around with wet feet.
Eco-Conscious Living
If living sustainably is important to you, composite decking made from recycled materials is an excellent choice.Â
Not only are you giving new life to what would otherwise be waste, but youâre also choosing a product built to last, reducing the need for replacement and repairs.
Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Decking for Your Climate and Lifestyle
Choosing the best decking for your home in Adelaide doesnât have to be overwhelming. By considering the climate and how you plan to use your deck, you can find the perfect material that will look great and last for years.Â
Whether you go with the natural beauty of timber, the low-maintenance convenience of composite, or the durability of PVC, your deck will be the perfect spot for making memories.
So, when youâre ready to make your deck dreams a reality, remember to choose wisely. After all, decking Adelaide is more than just a projectâitâs an investment in your home and your lifestyle.

Final Design | Architectural Design Studio 3 (Context) | University of South Australia | 2019
My LGBTQIA+ Chapel is a place of pride, diversity, visibility and support within the Adelaide context. Adelaide is lacking a dedicated queer space which is community based, safe and not centred around nightlife. My Chapel will bring together the community, key LGBTQIA+ services, education, and celebration. The campaign space will be a starting point for events, discussions, protests and celebrations. The garden library will be a space to relax, socialise, learn and come together as a community. The wedding space will provide a ground-breaking new experience, which welcomes weddings in all their different forms, with an adjacent celebration space providing entertainment and a place to revel for the wedding party, as well as other members of the community. The building will also be open 24/7 with important LGBTQIA+ services surrounding health, wellbeing, support and safety located in the entry and basement. My design opens the doors for the acceptance and amalgamation of the queer community. With greater accessibility and visibility, the LGBTQIA+ Chapel will become a monument within the Adelaide cultural landscape.

Kylie Minogue's Epic âTension Tourâ
Hold onto your disco balls because Kylie Minogue is back and ready to serve pure pop perfection with her highly anticipated Tension Tour in 2025!
Our ultimate pop queen Kylie Minogue is hitting the road, bringing her electric energy, iconic hits, and a few surprises to fans across the globe. This marks her biggest tour since 2011, and trust us, itâs going to be next level.
Itâs been an excruciating wait for Aussies after Kylieâs renaissance last year with banger Padam Padam and album Tension.
At that time, the singer was focusing on her Las Vegas residency. The residency wrapped up in May, and weâve known for months that a world tour announcement was coming.
Kylieâs last big gig in Australia was the huge Sydney WorldPride closing concert last year. She hasnât toured Australia since the Golden era.
Starting in her homeland of Australia, the tour kicks off in Perth on February 15, 2025, before dancing its way across Asia, the UK, and beyond. With even more dates to be revealed soon, weâre about to get a whole lot of Kylie in our livesâand we are living for it!
View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Kylie Minogue (@kylieminogue)
And whatâs a Kylie tour without a dazzling new soundtrack? Kylie is also set to release Tension II, a fresh collection of 13 brand new tracks that will drop on October 18, 2024, via Mushroom Music.
If youâre already obsessed with her Number 1 album Tension, get ready to gag because this sequel album is filled with high-energy bangers that will take us even deeper into Kylieâs euphoric, electronic dreamland. Think dance-floor anthems, iconic collabs, and straight-up Kylie magic.
The lead single, titled Lights Camera Action, dropped on September 27. Kylie promises a track thatâs going to bring all the glitz, glamour, and Padaming energy that weâve come to love from her. So, get your dancing shoes ready, because itâs about to go off!
âI am beyond excited to announce the TENSION TOUR 2025,â Kylie said in breaking the news.
âI canât wait to share beautiful and wild moments with fans all over the world, celebrating the Tension era and more!
âItâs been an exhilarating ride so far, and now, get ready for your close up because I will be calling Lights, Camera, Action ⊠and there will be a whole lot of Padaming!â
Fans in Sydney will have some hard choices to make, with two of Kylieâs concerts at Qudos Bank Arena falling on the same weekend as the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade and Laneway.
Or will they? That scheduling has inevitably led to online speculation over whether she might make an appearance on stage at the Mardi Gras Party.
Another Sydney show on the Monday has been added since the tour was first announced.
Festival organisers are playing it coy on that, simply saying, âIf youâre planning to see queen Kylie Minogue on 1 March we know of a great after party⊠but more on that later.â
Kylie last performed at the Mardi Gras Party in 2012, delivering a performance that people are still taking about twelve years later, and in 2019 she took part in the parade with a constellation of Sydneyâs drag royalty styling the many looks sheâs made famous.
If Kylieâs recent live performances are anything to go byâlike her show-stopping headline gig at BST Hyde Park or her Las Vegas Residencyâyou know the Tension Tour is going to be a feast for the senses. Expect glitter, dance beats, and that unmistakable Kylie magic that never goes out of style.
Australian Tour Dates: Saturday 15 February â RAC Arena, Perth, WA Tuesday 18 February â Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Adelaide, SA Thursday 20 February â Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, VIC -SOLD OUT Friday 21 February â Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, VIC -SOLD OUT Saturday 22 February â Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, VIC -SOLD OUT Wednesday 26 February â Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Brisbane, QLD Thursday 27 February â Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Brisbane, QLD Saturday 1 March â Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney, NSW -SOLD OUT Sunday 2 March â Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney, NSW Monday 3 March â Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney, NSW

Tension II: Your New Obsession
Alongside the tour, Kylieâs Tension II album will bring us 13 tracks of Kylie goodness, including collaborations with The Blessed Madonna, Bebe Rexha, Tove Lo, Orville Peck, and even Sia! Kylieâs vocals, combined with these high-profile collabs, promise an unforgettable collection of songs. One of the primary benefits of a pergola is the shade it provides. While pergolas do not offer complete coverage, they do provide a comfortable amount of shade, making your outdoor space more enjoyable during the hot summer months. You can also add retractable canopies or climbing plants to increase the level of shade and comfort.
3. Increases Property Value
Adding a pergola to your home can significantly increase its market value. Potential buyers often look for features that enhance outdoor living spaces, and a well-crafted pergola is a desirable addition. It not only adds functional space but also boosts the visual appeal of your property.
4. Versatile Outdoor Living Space
Pergolas are incredibly versatile and can be used for various purposes. Whether you want a quiet retreat for relaxation, a dining area for family gatherings, or a space for outdoor parties, a pergola can be designed to suit your needs. With the right furniture and decor, your pergola can become an extension of your indoor living space.
5. Supports Climbing Plants
Pergolas are perfect for supporting climbing plants such as wisteria, ivy, or roses. These plants not only add to the beauty of your pergola but also provide additional shade and a sense of privacy. Over time, your pergola can become a lush, green oasis in your backyard.
Types of Pergola Designs in Adelaide
1. Traditional Pergolas
Traditional pergolas feature a classic design with an open roof structure supported by columns or posts. They are often used to define outdoor spaces and create a sense of enclosure while still allowing for airflow and light. Traditional pergolas are timeless and can be customized with various materials and finishes.
2. Modern Pergolas
Modern pergola designs in Adelaide often feature sleek lines, minimalistic structures, and contemporary materials such as metal and glass. These pergolas are perfect for homes with a modern architectural style and can be customized to include features like integrated lighting and retractable canopies.
3. Attached Pergolas
Attached pergolas are connected to the side of your home, extending your living space into the outdoors. These designs are ideal for creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas. Attached pergolas can be customized to match the style of your home and provide a shaded area adjacent to your house.
4. Freestanding Pergolas
Freestanding pergolas are standalone structures that can be placed anywhere in your yard or garden. These pergolas offer flexibility in terms of placement and can be used to create separate outdoor living areas. Freestanding pergolas are perfect for creating a focal point in your landscape.
