Posing 101

So, you’re at a gala, red carpet, any highly publicised event and you want to look fantastic in the pictures. Your hair, make up, outfit look fabulous but just that won’t help the pictures look great - you need to know how to really pose well, to accentuate your best sides.

And you know that Cherry has got ya back ;)

Positioning your Back

First, get your body posture right.

Tuck your shoulder blade into imaginary back pockets of your dress/ pants, pullll your shoulders back. You can see Bella’s shoulder blades (marked with the two red lines) really being pulled back here.

Legs and Hands

I do not like standing like a soldier, with my feet together. Rather, I prefer doing what Kendall here is doing - keep one leg back, and shift your weight on that, keeping the front leg slightly bent. This helps give your legs a leaner look and your body will feel more confident.

Keep your hands close to your body, touching your thigh, its what i call “Barbie” hands. It makes your hands look more comfortable, and you won’t feel awkward doing this once you practice enough. If you have a purse or clutch in one hand, ensure that the other hand is still close to your body. Pull your elbows back, in line with your shoulder blades.

What you could also do with your arms, is pull one closer to the body than the other, so that it’s in line with the sides of your waist. This helps accentuate your curves. I think this is Jasmine (if its not her pls tell me so), and she’s cleverly kept one arm close to the body (marked with a red arrow), and the other creates negative space (blue triangle). Creating triangles with your arms or legs makes your body look really confident and lean.

Group Photos

The Kardashian-Jenners are really good at group photos. Most times, we have a tendency of entering the other person’s space either by leaning our head or bodies towards them, which makes our bodies look small and contorted. The KJ clan does a great job of staying in their space and remaining cohesive.

Here, their heads remain looking straight ahead, not leaning towards any person.

Khloe keeps her free hand close to her body, elbow pulled back (similar to Jasmine’s arm marked with the red arrow) and her shoulder down; whilst Kylie creates negative space and a triangle (similar to Jasmine’s arm marked with the blue triangle) and emphasises her shoulder by pushing it up.

Kendall avoids the soldier stance by keeping one leg in the front, and since she’s the tallest, doing so also allows her to look more in line with her family.

Kim keeps both her hands in the front - i think it’s because of her height. She is one of the shortest, and by not putting her arm around her siblings, she looks confident and in control.

Posing with your Partner

now, how do you pose with your partner? Let’s take a look at Paris. Paris, firstly, ensures that there is no space between her and her partner (See the blue circle). However, she twists her hips towards the camera (blue line) and one leg in the front, so that her body doesn’t look under-confident. She pulls her shoulders back and keeps her arms close to her body.

Kaia also takes a note from Paris - there is no visible space between her and Austin. She pulls her shoulders back and DOWN, and creates negative space with her free hand (blue triangle), all while keeping her hands close to her body.

lastly, Winnie. Winnie’s partner is significantly taller than her, we can see the way he’s leaning towards her. Winnie however, keeps her body tall and sharp. As usual, she’s creating triangles with her body; see her legs and free hand.

they’re calling it block party 2024. just blocking and ignoring countless celebrities who havent said shit about palestine. influencers, actors, anyone who went to the met gala, whatever, they’re getting blocked. and people keep talking about how cathartic it is, how good it feels, how they never realized they could DO that. there was some kind of subconscious law against blocking famous people, but it’s broken, and people are LOVING it. and it’s WORKING. a social media/digital advertising coordinator was talking about how ad companies are PANICKING, because they can’t accurately target anymore. so many big influencers, including fucking LIZZO started talking about palestine the MOMENT their follower counts started going down. and the best part? no one is forgiving them. lizzo posted a tiktok asking people to donate to palestinian families, and all the comments just said you’re a multimillionaire. put your money where your mouth is. blocked.

i feel like i’m witnessing the downfall of celebrity culture, right here right now. people are waking up.

How did you improve your social skills and became more extroverted and confident?

Here are some of my favourite exercises:

Random topic generator. go online, search for a random topic generator and record yourself talking about it spontaneously for one minute. Then watch the recording and see what you did well and didn’t. Do this every day for 3-4 minutes and you’ll see a vast improvement in no time.

Create a character for yourself, modelled after a known character. my extrovert character is modelled after Graham Norton. I love how he hosts, navigates people and situations. My extrovert character has his adopted his traits, and overtime, I made some of those traits unique to myself.

Never be scared to approach people and do this by starting small. Join a hobby class or two, or a pub crawl, or a networking event, anywhere where you can practice, practice and practice.

Podcasts, the interview ones: listen to good interview podcasts. It’ll help you understand how people speak and converse with one another.
