Rhys Week Day 8: Free Day

Birthdays and Cakes

Feyre tried to be as quiet as possible she threw a robe over her nightgown and sneaked out of the bedroom. It was hard enough to wiggle out of Rhys's death grip without waking him up.

She quietly opened the door of Nyx bedroom and looked inside, checking if he still slept. Feyre wasn't surprised when she found him already sitting in his bed, grinning at her. She promised Nyx that they would wake up earlier this morning to bake a cake for Rhys, for his birthday. That's also how she got Nyx to sleep earlier the evening before.

"Good morning, sweetheart." Feyre whispered. He laughed and jumped up, running to Feyre and hugged her legs. She picked him up, peppering his face with kisses. "We have to quiet, okay?" Feyre said. "We don't want to wake Daddy up before we are done, right?"

Nyx nodded. "Can we bake now?"

Feyre smiled. "Yes, we can bake now." He threw his arms around Feyres neck, his wings twitching in excitement. His wings always gave his mood away. Cassian was the first to say he'd train that with him but Feyre thought it was adorable.

She winnowed them down to the kitchen, taking a chair with her free hand and putting it front of the counter. Nyx was already eyeing the ingredients that Nuala and Cerridwen left out for them when she put him on the chair. She pulled out the recipe, that Elain and the shadow twins wrote for her, out of her the pocket of her robe. "Alright." Feyre sighed, taking a bowl and placed it in front of Nyx. She let Nyx pour the ingredients in the bowl that she measured. Cracking the eggs she guided Nyx hands with her own. He always watched wide-eyed and seeing his excitement, Feyre prayed that nothing would go wrong. She couldn't cook and she never tried herself at baking. She was grateful for Elain and the twins that they wrote everything down, step for step.

Nyx complained when she started to mix everything together, wanting to do it himself. She used that time to quickly make Nyx a snack, because she knew that his arms would grow tired soon and she'd take over again.

When he told her that he couldn't mix anymore, she pulled back his chair and gave him his snack. From his spot on the chair he watched as Feyre continued.

"We're baking a cake, Mama!" he said excitedly.

"I know, baby. You did so great, I'm proud of you." she replied. She was sure that Nyx would be sick of hearing that, so often she told him. She couldn't keep herself from telling him, she was incredibly proud of her son and she wished her parents would have told her when she was a child. Or a teenager, Feyre thought back to the years where she went to the woods to hunt. She looked at Nyx, who smiled brightly at what she just told him.

Shortly after, Nuala entered the kitchen. Nyx told her about the cake as Feyre poured the batter into a form. Nuala listened, smiling as he told her everything. Keeping every little detail in.

Feyre looked at the clock. Even if everything went as planned, they were a little behind the time Feyre had planned. She felt Rhys stirring through the bond. It wouldn't be long until he was awake.

"I can take care of that." Nuala said. Feyre nodded, they were as good as done. It was just about baking now and Nuala was about to make breakfast, so she was in the kitchen either way. "Thank you." Feyre said, picking Nyx up again.

"No!" Nyx squirmed.

"Do you not want to wake up Daddy?" Feyre asked. As he frowned up at her, she held back a smirk. She knew waking up Rhys was more important to Nyx than the cake. It was their tradition. Feyre and Nyx woke Rhys up on his birthday and Rhys and Nyx woke up Feyre on her birthday.

They went up again and Feyre already got Nyx ready for the day. She stayed with him as he brushed his teeth and then she brushed his hair and dressed him. He looked adorable in a shirt that was similar to what Rhys was usually wearing.

When she felt Rhys waking up, Feyre went to their bedroom door. "Ready?" she asked Nyx.

"Yes!" he said, already jumping up and down in participation. She opened the door and Nyx was racing inside, climbing on the bed and throwing himself on Rhys.

Rhys made an oof sound and then Nyx yelled "Happy Birthday, Daddy!" her mate chuckled and hugged Nyx. Feyre smiled as she watched her boys. Rhys cuddling Nyx and Nyx babbling and laughing and repeating "Happy Birthday!"

Feyre joined them, sitting on her side of the bed and watching them. Rhys looked up at her, smiling. "Good morning, Feyre darling."

Feyre grinned as she leaned down. "Happy Birthday, my love." she whispered and kissed him. Nyx deemed it too long and squeezed his hand between their faces, breaking them apart. Rhys chuckled when he saw Nyx's frown. Nyx leaned into Feyre and she pulled him on her lap. Rhys took the chance to sit up, leaning against the beds headboard.

"Do you want to give it daddy now?" Feyre whispered to Nyx.

"Yes!" he said. Rhys raised an eyebrow in question. Feyre grinned and pulled a piece of paper out of the pocket realm. She gave it Nyx who excitedly gave it Rhys. Nyx had painted his hands and pressed them on the paper a few days ago. He was so happy about the result that he decided it was the gift he wanted to give his father on his birthday. After he painted a rainbow on the paper and Feyre helped him write "Happy Birthday" Nyx gave Feyre the picture to keep it until today.

Rhys smile grew wider as he looked at it. Nyx giggled but suddenly he turned serious. Tugging on Feyres robe. "What is it?" she asked.

"Mama." he said.

"What?" she asked.

"Mama." he repeated, putting a hand on her cheek. Feyre leaned down and he whispered in her ear "The cake."

The cake. Shit. The cake. Fuck. She sat Nyx on Rhys's lap and jumped up. "I'll be back in a minute." she said and hurried out. Ran barefoot down the stairs, to the kitchen. She pushed open the door and almost collided with Nuala. "Sorry." Feyre breathed. "I forgot the cake-" Nuala was here. Of course. She was here and looked after the cake. How could Feyre forget? But it wasn't Nuala who worked on the cake, it was Elain.

Elain who smiled at her. "I'm sorry but I already made the cream. Don't worry I won't be decorating that's your and Nyx' job, I just thought Nyx may lose his patience while smoothing the frosting. It takes a little while."

Feyre let out a relieved breath and hugged her sister. She was surprised for a moment but quickly hugged her back. "Thank you." Feyre said. "I completely forgot until Nyx just reminded me."

Elain giggled. "It's not the first time."

Feyre laughed. "That was one time."

"You burnt soup!" Elain laughed.

Feyre rolled her eyes but echoed her laugh. "And it was the last time I burnt food."

"Today was almost the second time." she said, a smirk on her face.

Feyre snorted. "Shut up." she said, turning around to go to her mate and son again. "Thank you, Lainey."

Elain rolled her eyes at the name but smiled and said. "You're welcome, Fey."

Feyre winnowed into her bedroom again. Rhys and Nyx were laughing when she entered. They both looked up at her at the same time. "Breakfast!" she said, nodding at Nyx. He grinned and crawled to her. She helped him climb from the bed and he took her hand. "Come, daddy!" he said.

He groaned as he stood up. "I'm coming." Feyre took a quick peek out of the window. It was raining. Then her eyes went back to Rhys, who slightly limped. His knee hurt.

"I'm fine." he said when he reached them, kissing Feyres cheek.

"I know you are." Feyre said.

As they walked in the dining room, most of their family was already there. Except Azriel, who followed soon after. Even if Rhys told them that it wasn't necessary, they all hugged him, Cassian picking Rhys up while at it, which made Nyx laugh. Though Amren stayed at her spot and said "Happy Birthday, boy."

The rest of the day was just being around the family. It was nice seeing Rhys so relaxed and Nyx had the time of his life playing with his aunts and uncles. Especially when Cassian started throwing him in the air and catching him. Nyx thought it was hilarious, though Feyres heart stopped everytime he was in the air. But everytime he threw Nyx up, Nyx wings twitched as if he'd try to fly. Rhys looked extremely proud every time that happened. They started teaching him the basics not that long ago and he made great progress.

It wasn't until noon Feyre finally could get ready and dress herself. Making herself presentable.

In the afternoon she sneaked away with Nyx, decorating the cake, finishing it. She let Nyx do it and after she lit the candles, Cassian came in and carried the cake, as Feyre picked up Nyx and held the door open for Cassian.

Rhys smiled when they put the cake down. "Wish!" Nyx said and they all laughed. It took a few seconds until Rhys leaned forward and blew out the candles, then his eyes wandered to Nyx and Feyre. Nyx clapped happily.

Feyre cuddled in beside Rhys, laying her head on his shoulder as Nyx told him about how he made the cake.

I am incredibly grateful to have you. You and Nyx. I love you. He said down the bond.

Feyre smiled. I love you, too.

A Sweet Prize

Notes: I couldn’t decide on a character to have be the winner, so maybe there will be later fics for different character winning their prize. Any input on who the winner should be is welcome.

"Why did I agree to this?" You whisper to yourself, eyes scanning over the sight that stares back through the mirror. The sound of applause and cheers echo out from the stage that had been set up for the night.

A show and a small raffle, all to raise and keep morale. Some entertainment would be good for mental stability, they said. The whole thing was being run by Serpent, should have been the first clue of your imminent embarrassment, Peggy and Joan would both be performing, Kelvin prepared a wide variety of cold treats for audience enjoyment. By all accounts it would be a near flawless event within the MBCC.

"Alright, my lovely Sinners! You've all made an amazing audience for us tonight! But sadly, all good things must eventually end," Serpent speaks sadly, her voice echoing as she takes careful steps across the stage, "but since you have all made such a good audience, I do have one final little magic trick to show you all!"

It's almost time…

"I'm sure you've all been wondering what the number one, topmost, extra special mystery prize for the raffle is!" Murmurs excitedly weave through the crowd, "well wonder no more! This next trick will SHOW you!"

A pair of staff members roll a pair of large boxes onto the stage, both decorated with bright colors and swirling patterns. Serpent paces across the stage to stand next to one box.

"For this final trick, I will need an assistant, but this time, not from the audience. Tell me, lovely sinners, have you noticed someone missing out there?" Again murmurs rise in the quiet pause, "well everyone clap extra loud for my assistant in this final trick! The MBCC Chief!" She shouts excitedly, the music cue starting up in time with her words.

It's time…

You step out onto the stage to be met with the barrier of applause, all the shackled sinners that have been brought to the MBCC seated comfortably and smiling up at the revelry being displayed for them. A shy smile tugs at your lips, even if your humiliation is nigh, you need to keep the surprise safe.

It was months that this event was being planned and prepared, months that the final prize was a secret known only to you, and to Serpent who came up with the idea.

"Well Chief, just this once, I hold you'll forgive me for being the one to give orders!" Chuckles echo from the crowd, Serpent opens the large box beside her, "well, please step inside here! Wave the lovelies goodbye, Chief!" A small wave as you try to swallow your nerves, slowly sinking into the box as Serpent closes the lid over your head.

"Well with that started, I'll reveal to you all what it is I'll be doing!" Serpent starts, her heels clicking loudly as she walks away from the prop boxes, "a little trick of teleportation! You see, the Chief will disappear! And out of the other box, will be the number one raffle prize!" She explains excitedly, her own giddiness at the reveal being covered up by her normally bouncy attitude.

"Does anyone have any questions before we do this?" Serpent steps out towards the front edge of the stage.

A voice echoes slightly in the room, "what will happen to the Chief?" Nightingale's voice echoes, having been given the night off for the event.

"Oh I promise, the Chief will be just fine! She'll appear a little ways away is all!" Serpent nearly sings, "anyone else?"

Silence hangs, the air buzzing for the next, final, reveal.

Serpent clicks back to the boxes, tapping on the box you had gone into and causing the small structure to fall apart, revealing its newly emptiness. Murmurs echo as she steps across to the second box, resting her hand on its lid as she turns to face the audience.

"Now, on the count of three everyone!" She announces, inciting shouted participation from the audience.

"One!" Here it comes…

"Two!" Will there be any respect left for you?..

"Three!" Well, you guess it doesn't matter now…

Serpent lifts the lid, the box crumbling like the first did, and standing out from the remains…

The chief stands up, lifting one leg up behind them, back straight to their full height, one arm propped against their hip, the other raised in a peace sign in front of their face. All in a playboy bunny suit.

The sparkly cloth hugs skin tight, leaving not a single curve or line in your body to the imagination, the slightly too tight fishnet leggings giving your legs a squishing appearance, the stiletto high heels offering little support but add noticeable height, and the tall bunny ear headband sits over your head, one ear flopping downward from the movement of standing up.

Stunned silence is quickly stomped out by deafening applause and cheers, even from up on the stage, you can feel the burning gazes of the sinners on your body.

Serpent speaks to pull attention off you, if only slightly, "you see, Lovelies, our number one prize tonight, is a simple, but very intriguing one." She steps around to hold a hand out to the Chief, helping you step down from the box's display, "one night, no shackles, at least not for you, with the Chief! Anything you want to do, anywhere you want to go, all expenses paid by Minos! Just our lucky winner, and our lovely bunny Chief. Alone, and free to do whatever the winner wishes." Serpent practically purrs the last sentence, her own searing gaze being clear to anyone watching.

Ti-Grace Atkinson sees love as part of women's condition of oppression, not as a salvageable good that had been corrupted. She assumes that men do not love: Her discussion focuses on what love does to women. She sees love as a political institution, necessary to the functioning of male domination.

I propose that the phenomenon of love is the psychological pivot in the persecution of women. Because the internalization of coercion must play such a key functional part in the oppression of women due to their numbers alone, and because of the striking grotesqueness of the one-to-one political units ‘pairing’ the Oppressor and the Oppressed, the hostile and the power-less, and thereby severing the Oppressed from any kind of political aid, it is not difficult to conclude that women by definition must exist in a special psychopathological state of fantasy both in reference to themselves and to their manner of relating to their counterclass. This pathological condition, considered the most desirable state for any woman to find herself in, is what we know as the phenomenon of love.

The most common female escape is the psychopathological condition of love. It is a euphoric state of fantasy in which the victim transforms her oppressor into her redeemer. She turns her natural hostility toward the aggressor against the remains of herself—her Consciousness—and sees her counterpart in contrast to herself as all-powerful (as he is by now at her expense).

The combination of his power, her self-hatred, and the hope for a life that is self-justifying—the goal of all living creatures—results in a yearning for her stolen life—her Self— that is the delusion and poignancy of love. 'Love' is the natural response of the victim to the rapist.

Power brings love, she says.

Any theory of attraction could begin with the definition of the verb 'to attract': the exertion of a force such as magnetism to draw a person or a thing... According to Atkinson, women have not necessarily had a choice about whether to love—or whether to have sexual relations.

Isn't love a transgression of the self? A giving over of what we know will be taken by violence if we don't?

To refuse to name this giving "love" might make it unbearably grim.

Insofar at least as love is inequitable, that is, as long as it is not by definition reciprocal, love will not survive the liberation of women.

Atkinson assumes that love will remain non-reciprocal.

Almost none of Atkinson's definitions of love apply to love between women, which clearly is not the response of the victim to the rapist or a giving over of something that could be taken by force.

What is love but the payoff for the consent to oppression? What is love but need? What is love but fear? In a just society, would we need love?

Atkinson clearly thinks the answer to the last question is "no." If all personal needs are political needs, then in a politically just society there would be no needs. Perhaps this submerges the personal a little too much into the political, the individual into the collective.

An article by the Feminists, which shows Atkinson's work, says:

We must destroy love (an institution by definition), which is generally recognized as approval and acceptance. Love promotes vulnerability, dependence, possessiveness, susceptibility to pain, and prevents the full development of a woman's human potential by directing all her energies outward in the interests of others.

Unlike Beauvoir and Firestone, Atkinson does not see love as something that can be salvaged, but as a development that was created solely to foster male domination. She sees autonomy as the feminist goal, and sees friendship as being more compatible with autonomy than love is.

I distinguish between 'friendship' and 'love.' 'Friendship' is a rational relationship which requires the participation of two parties to the mutual satisfaction of both parties. 'Love' can be felt by one party; it is unilateral by nature, and, combined with its relational character, it is thus rendered contradictory and irrational.

But Atkinson is not recognizing that friendship and "love" may co-exist in the same situation. One friend, for instance, may love another sexually, and the other may not reciprocate in the same sense, but a caring interaction may still be possible. Such interrelations are common among lesbians. Some kinds of love may be on a continuum with friendship; such a concept is not part of Atkinson's framework in Amazon Odyssey.

In a 1979 interview with off our backs, Atkinson told me that she had feelings for women that might be called "love," but she would prefer not to use that term. Atkinson said present-day friendship for her generally means friendship among women. Friendship with men, like love, poses dangers.

Friendship between men and women, under the present conditions of inequality, is the pretence that equality and mutual respect exists. So long as the male role exists, men have the option of assuming it; therefore, the relationship is one of jeopardy to women. I am from India. My country doesn’t care about women. If you are from the lower class your chance of education is low and you will probably be married off by 21 (if you are lucky). You just become a baby machine with no dreams and no hopes. Where your husbands side of the family is allowed to abuse you however they like. You just have to take it. If you are middle/upper class you will have a decent education but as soon as you turn 24-25 you will be married to someone you barely know…you probably won’t be allowed to continue your career. Again you will just became a baby machine. Your husband & his family can abuse you, treat you horribly (most women are) and you just have to take it because what are you going to do? Get divorced? If you choose to take the divorce route it will cost you so much money, humiliation and shame. Stop calling us ‘goddesses’ or ‘lakshmi’. Stop it.
