Wind stepped up to the rope and stared at him. She nodded and shrugged in utter dismissal. “Just what I thought. All mouth and no brain. Do you have a gold piece on you?”

“What for?”

“If you are right, it is a sure thing. I will shoot at the hoops blindfolded. If I hit even one target, I win. No need for a bull's eye. Just hit the target somewhere. If I do, you get a chance to get back your gold by shooting at the hoops with my bow and arrows. You won't need a blindfold. You hit one inside a hoop anywhere, you get back your gold piece. Hit two, and you get my silver too. You miss them all, I get my silver and your gold.”

Corporal Hayes nodded, “I am a witness. You said that what Lady Wind did was easy. She has agreed to your terms. I will blindfold her and hold the stakes. Your gold piece, Chutney. Lady Wind, a gold or its value in lesser coin.”

Wind just held out her collection box. “Help yourself, Corporal Hayes. I trust you.”

He rummaged and pronounced, “Ten silver, that's enough. Here is Chutney's gold.” He put it all in his pouch.

Hanar handed him a strip of cloth to bind up Wind's eyes. As he did so, he asked, “How will you know where the targets are?”

Wind shrugged, “Ears. I have good hearing and have had to fight in the dark before.”

Nodding as he pulled the blindfold snug, Corporal Hays announced, “Since Lady Wind will be locating her targets by sound alone, we will have it dead quiet while she is shooting. Chutney, if I hear one bit of noise from you, I will declare a forfeit and give the money to Wind.”

Wind nocked an arrow to the string and took several calming breaths. “Ready when you are, Corporal.”

From the safety of the tree trunk, he rolled the first hoop.

Everypony in the crowd saw her head snap toward the rolling target and bob upward as it hit a tussock and bounded up. She shifted some as it hit and rebounded. While it was in the air on the rebound, her arrow passed through the hoop with a snap of hit paper!

The second hoop rolled quite differently, not bounding about at all! Wind's arrow shot through the space between the target and the hoop!

The third hoop seemed to bounce wildly! At the peak of a bounce, there was the sharp pop of arrow hitting paper!

Corporal Hayes retrieved the hoops and the arrows. Two of the hoops had arrow holes in them, one in the outside white ring and one in the yellow ring, just outside of the bull's eye.

As he covered the holes, Corporal Hayes pronounced, “By the terms, all three count as hits. Your turn, Chutney. Let's see if you can do as well eyes open as Lady Wind did blindfolded.”

Chutney stompped up and whined petulantly, “Just gimme back my gold piece, Hayes. If she can to that, I is a shoe in. No need to show her up.”

“No, Chutney. Do it or lose it. It is that simple.”

He clumsily took the bow and managed to get an arrow on the string. As the target rolled out, he hauled back and released! The arrow passed about two meters behind the hoop!

His next one was bouncing from hummock to tussock! His wild arrow failed to reach the target and stood up from the ground almost half way to where it was rolling mockingly past!

As Hayes was rolling out the third hoop, Chutney's arrow slammed into the tree that he was staying behind! Hayes stepped out and pointedly gazed at the wild arrows sticking up from turf and out of the tree!

Rearing up some to get the arrow from the tree trunk, Hayes remarked, “If you were shooting at me, Chutney, you would have missed! You shot high! As for the others, well, the safest place on this archery field was behind the targets! Lady Wind wins the whole bet!”

He ceremoniously counted out Wind's silver and added Chutney's gold piece.

Wind cheerfully took the money.

While she was resting by helping Hanar in her booth, Hanar snickered, “Show off! That was likely the best piece of showmanship that I have ever seen! I know that you could not see it, being blindfolded, but over half of the RRP that are here were in your audience! They were astounded.”

Wind modestly replied, as she helped to measure and cut cloth for a customer, “I did do pretty well. Better than I expected, truthfully.”

Hanar snickered as she retorted, “Never admit that where town ponies can hear you!”

Shortly one of the RRP came quietly up to ask respectfully, “Lady Wind, we of the Road Police did enjoy your demonstrations but we would like to ask if you would take some time to teach us what you can of unarmed combat. That is knowledge that we can really use.”

Wind did not even need to think that over. “Of course, Corporal Hayes. You Royal Road Police have been unfailingly good to us Rom. I will be happy to. We can use the workout field that I already have laid out. When you have a class together, we will sort out what you know and what you need and I will do my best to teach you.”

“Thank you, Lady Wind. It will take a few hours for some of them to get here. They are coming from down at Frezin Springs. We will have ten in the class. How much will it cost?”

Wind smiled, “I am going to betray everything Rom. For the RRP, the lessons are free. You have always been good to us Rom and I am returning that goodness.”

“I am off to spread the word!” Corporal Hayes trotted off to the RRP tent.

Things went quietly for a bit. Wind sat on a small carpet in her space and cheerfully did slight of hand effects. Coins came, went and did improbable things! Cards totally defied the rules of probability! Dice that were random for any pony produced unlikely numbers!

Young and many older ponies flocked around to watch magic that used no magic at all! Coins landed in Wind's collecting box with a delightful tinkle! Wind fairly frequently emptied the box onto a large handkerchief, gathered it into a bag and flipped it toward the audience! They foals always scrambled to catch them but no coins landed among them!

After a few hours of enjoyable and profitable activity, Corporal Hayes showed up leading the promised class of off duty RRP officers. There were fifteen of them, altogether.

After he finished introducing them, he offered Wind a purse of coins. “We all agreed, Lady Wind. If you were to stop by a section Headquarters while you were on the road, we'd take the free instruction, no problem. We would throw something into the pot for lunch or dinner but that would be it. Thing is, we all know that you Rom only have one source of income. These fairs. So we are paying you for your time at the fair. Fare for the Fair!”

Wind snickered at the pun but took the money! They were both right and being just under the circumstances.

She gathered the class around her and began to drill them on what they knew already. She had several of them spar while she watched to critique their form and technique.

Smiling, she gathered them close and began with basic explanations about things like how to properly deliver a blow and the best ways parry an attack. Each thing that she explained, she accompanied by demonstrations with her students.

Not only was Wind pleased with the progress of her students, the RRP ponies were pleased at what they were learning! All across her workout space, ponies in uniform were tripping, flipping and knocking each other flat! Some were learning how to do an array of nerve strikes.

As Wind pointed out, “Done right, these hits can temporarily disable a leg or the horn of a unicorn. Especially, that last type of strike is very useful. After the last unicorn that I had to stop, Black Lotus taught me about how to disable a horn without serious injury to the subject.”

Heads nodded in understanding.

By the end of the lesson, she was hearing things like, “That hitting PAST your target is amazing!” “When she showed how to take on up to three, I didn't think she could do it, until she did! Now I can too!” “I know. There is a lot of thinking in her way of fighting. That's how she wins, more often than not.”

The happy knot of officers wandered back to the RRP pavilion. That evening, Hanar pointed over their way, “Look, Wind, love! They are practicing what you taught them!”

Wind nodded, as she shared a nice slice of peach pie, made by Black Lotus.

Exploration of the now-offline Far Cry 5 official websites

Introduction

I used the Internet Archive, also known as the Wayback Machine, to see what the official Far Cry 5 websites used to look like between May 2017 and February 2020. On or before September 25th, 2020, the site changed and a lot of information about the game and its character disappeared. This is what I was interested in recovering.

In the posts, for convenience, you will see me use the terms “American website” and “European website”. While there were theoretically 19 versions, there were only two different layouts and appearances.

All the available languages and locations, according to the U.S. version.

The “American” layout was used for:

Canada (English & French) - /en-ca/ & /fr-ca/

Mexico - /es-mx/

The U.S. - /en-us/

Brazil - /pt-br/

And the “European” one was for:

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland (“Nordic English”) - /en-nordic/

France - /fr-fr/

Germany - /de-de/

Italy - /it-it/

The Netherlands - /nl-nl/

Poland - /pl-pl/

Russia - /ru-ru/

Spain - /es-es/

The U.K. - /en-gb/

Australia - /en-au/

The Chinese (/zh-tw/), Arabic (/ar-ar/), Japanese (/ja-jp/), and Korean (/ko-kr/) Far Cry 5 sites were apparently not properly archived, but the ones that most often were and that I recovered all the content from were the U.S. and U.K. versions, which is also why I ended up choosing the generic terms American and European (even though they are not always geographically accurate).

The current Far Cry 5 website, as I’m writing this, is www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/far-cry/far-cry-5

The old sites I was interested in were far-cry.ubisoft.com/game and far-cry.ubisoft.com/farcry5, and more specifically far-cry.ubisoft.com/game/en-us/, far-cry.ubisoft.com/farcry5/en-us/, far-cry.ubisoft.com/game/en-gb/, far-cry.ubisoft.com/farcry5/en-gb/. To change the language/region, you just have to replace /en-us/ or /en-gb/ with another tag; I included them all in the lists above.

In each post, there will be two parts: Recovered content and Commentary. In the first one, I will post what I found in the archives, and in the second, compare all that information with the final version of Far Cry 5 to see what has changed and what still seems relevant.

WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is “flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an ‘old flame’ - an old relationship. It’s truly down to you!

In total, there are 4 prompts for each day. These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives.  We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.

Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.

When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag it with:

Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.

Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed. This is based on trust and we will not check this.

TIMELINE

July: Trope voting form released. Late August: Prompt list is released for at least four weeks of preparation time. Tropes cannot be posted earlier than August 25th because of Moderator obligations in real life. (But, you know, go ahead and start writing/drawing, and add the themes in later, if you want!) September: Do as much or as little on your works as you want. You can prepare everything in advance or let September go by with vibes and start working in October. It’s up to you. October 1st: Challenge begins! A storm of whump breaks upon us all! During this time, some posts will be reblogged to the whumptober archive blog. We open the yearly AO3 collection for posting (optional). November 1st: The challenge is officially over! Completionist form opens for those who want to be included in the hall-of-fame. Early November: We release completionist and participant badges, solicit feedback, and post a hall-of-fame list of completionists by the 10th.

PARTICIPATION AND COMPLETION

Q: What counts as participation? Create or continue at least one work inspired by one of this year’s prompts. Q: What counts as completion? Creating work(s) inspired by at least one prompt from each day (or alts), for a total of 31 unique prompts. Q: Do I need to create 31 works? No. You can, if you want. Or you can create one work that you add to every day with a new prompt. Or several works that combine prompts. You can also update an existing work by adding new material with the current prompts. Q: Do I need to post my works somewhere to be a completionist or a participant? No. Q: How do you know I actually completed the challenge? We’ll take your word for it! Q: Do I have to finish my work(s) to be a completionist? No, you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish them in October, but if you want it to count towards being a completionist, you must have completed 31 prompts by the end of the month. So for example, if you’re writing a long fic and you fit 31 different prompts into the writing you did in October, it’s okay if that fic isn’t finished by the time October ends, you’ll still be a completionist. Q: Is co-writing/illustrating allowed? Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you. Q: Is there a min/max limit on word count for written works? No. Q: Is there a min/max limit of quality for art? No. Q: Do I have to do something each day to be a completionist? No. You can skip days whenever you want, and as long as 31 daily prompts (or alts) are in your works done in October, you can be a completionist. For example, if you wrote a 1000-word ficlet that covers prompts in days 2, 3, and 17, you can check all three days off your list even though it’s only one work. Q: Is this challenge just for fics? No! Artworks, GIFsets, headcannons, rec lists, poetry, moodboards, or any other creative work is encouraged. Q: Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges? Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.

PROMPTS

Q: How do the prompts work? There are FOUR prompts per day: a theme and three ideas. You can use one, two, three, or all four prompts for each day. If you don’t like any of the daily prompts, you can substitute one of the ALT prompts instead. Q: How strictly/literally should we interpret the prompts? As literally or as figuratively as you want. For example, if the theme is WATER, that could mean drowning, waterboarding, raining, swimming, take place underwater, be lost at sea, construct a metaphor about a character’s mood that changes like a flowing river, crying, or whatever else you can think of that fits that theme. Q: Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many? No limit and combine as many as you’d like. If you create a work that checks off multiple prompts, that work will count for a fill of multiple prompts. You need to address 31 different prompts to be an official completionist, but you don’t have to produce 31 separate works.

WORKS

Q: What’s whump? Hurting a character, whether that’s physically, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically, or any other way you can think of. Comfort afterwards is optional. Angst is emotional whump, so it counts. Q: How do I know if it’s whumpy enough? If your character is just mildly inconvenienced, it probably needs more whump. However, no participant has to prove whumpiness to the mods. Whatever you write is up to you. Q: What kind of characters can I create for? Anything. Generic “whumpee,” OC, PC, NPC, major characters, minor characters, or whatever you want. There are no limits. Q: Does it have to take place in a specific fandom? No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want. Q: Can I create AI-created works? We will not reblog or promote any works we know to be generative AI-created. Q: Is there anything we’re not allowed to write? As long as it contains whump and is based on our prompts, it’s fine. Please courtesy tag your works if you post them so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences. Q: What about sex, minor characters, and potentially disturbing content? You can create whatever works are legal in your country and post them accordingly. Please courtesy tag anything you think might be objectionable if you post to Tumblr so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences.

POSTING

Q: Where can I post my work? Post where and how you want. You don’t even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive. There is an AO3 archive for Whumptober 2024, as well as the parent collection for works completed outside of the event. Q: Can I start posting early? You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? We won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st. Q: Can I post late? Yes. For the sake of our hardworking Post Fairies, only a day’s themes will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive each day of October. But you can post whenever. Some of us are still working on and posting Whumptober fics from years ago. Q: Do I have to use your tags? Only on Tumblr and only if you want us to reblog your work on @whumptober-archive. Wind being skilled at sleight of hand is a really fun wrinkle to her character, not to mention "magic without using magic" is likely fascinating enough to earn her a fair bit of money!

That it does! Wind absolutely floors them with her slight of hand. Note that she was only showing Hanar to see if it might be an act and that drew a goodly crowd and, the money box!

The T'ang Magicians are famous throughout Equestria for that exact thing. They put on marvelous stage magic shows that use no magic at all! Just wonderful illusions!

Summary: Task Force 141 operates successfully without an omega, at least that’s what Price has been saying since its formation. Two alphas and two betas balance the pack just fine, and they have the numbers to prove it.

It works for a while, until the Omega Initiative is born and the 141 find themselves having to adjust to the sudden addition of an omega to their pack. Fresh out of an institute, you’re hardly fit for their secretive, dangerous world, or so Price thinks. 

As each member of the team gets closer to you, things begin to come to light, not only about you but about the decision to force you into their lives.

Maybe, just maybe, Price was wrong and the 141 does need an omega after all.
