Found slide: Fifty years ago: New South Wales Government Railways steam locomotive 3526 leads 3820 into Parramatta railway station, Burramattagal country, on 21 April 1974, during what was prematurely announced as the final main line steam train excursion in the state. Public Transport Commissioner Philip Shirley was in full “Beeching” mode at the time but steam train excursions had restarted even before his resignation in late 1975. This is empirical knowledge: if you’re thinking “why, that light-haired kid leaning out the window of the first carriage looks a bit like the ‘Slides Worth Seeing’ profile picture”, you’re on the right track, so to speak (photographer unknown)
for anyone for whom all you know of Sydney is the harbour bridge and opera house, this does have a touch of technical information but I think it brings it together really well and imo is a must-watch if you want to get more of an understanding of the part of the city 5sos are from, and getting a rundown of the phenomena facing australia's up and coming megacities makes a fun little bittersweet backdrop to imagine and juxtapose to the city references all through boy and 5sos5.
keep in mind that much of the change that has happened has been over the last 15 years--if you can imagine, how disconcerting it would be to move away while it was basically all the same as it had been your entire childhood just for it to have changed so drastically every time you go back. but at the same time, as part of a generation who grew up in the suburban or peri-urban sprawl where things like creative opportunities were few and far between and approximately a 2hr train ride each way, knowing that something, whether this or another intervention to turn your home into somewhere new (yes that's a shoutout to their first ep) is so necessary. and yet some areas of the western suburbs are definitely in the ugly phase of this transformation--part 1 of this series which i haven't attached here goes through what that looks like in northern melbourne, and I see the same phenomenon in the outer suburbs of brisbane.
those who know me in person know i never miss a chance to talk about parramatta: the emerging central cbd whose river location reminds me a bit of brisbane without the humidity, where dreams of a better and more equal sydney are starting to be realised, and where my childhood best friend lives. here's a video talking about it, and I hope that in watching this you can see sydney as it is, but also imagine how it's gonna be. and just to fuck with you (i'm not even fucking with you! you can look it up!) there's a suburb called camellia in the parramatta area. here's to hoping it's the start of a vibrant revitalised area and not problematic disruption that leaves everyone bitter--because it could go either way.
🎄 DECEMBER ROUND UP🎄 I've really enjoyed doing these this year. I'll keep doing them in the new year. Really great way of pinpointing how I was feeling that month, what I was doing and where I was, both physically and mentally. They're like a mini diary ☺️ December was fucking wild, I'll tell you that. Got shipped off to Sydney for Santa Set and ran Santa Set at Colonnades again while in Sydney. Let's hope 2023 let's me not do something as insane as that again 🙃 . . . #december #photodump #santaphotos #sydneyoperahouse #parramatta #santa #airplaneselfie #textposttumblr #textposts (at Parramatta, New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm2O6c1hKaMrgIcKb31jXVoLTdMrOzFMsVLjfo0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
We're particularly excited about the closing night (Sat 15th in Centenary Square) with live music from PARTY DOZEN, 1 800 MIKEY, California Girls, Good Pash, Cammy Cautious and the Wrestlers plus DJ Petedisc (Beatdisc Records) spinning vinyl tunes between sets!
