Just the other day, I was driving around and the following songs came up on my playlist. My playlist is on shuffle, so I am clueless as to what song will play next. There are occasions when I hear the first eight bars, I immediately click to the next song.
Now, I know I’m like a Klingon. I just won’t let it go. Other times, I just fucking walk away and you could be standing right next to me and I will look at you and hold up that Pariah Carey sign, “I Don’t Know Her.”
Here are the songs and the order they played in: “Stay With Me,” Bette Midler; “Fantasy,” Pariah Carey; “I’m On Your Side,” Angela Bofill; “All The Love In The World,” Janis Siegel; “You’re My One and Only,” Jennifer Rush and lastly, “I Am A Rock,” Simon & Garfunkel.
I know I have a contentious relationship with my L.A. Based Photographer. I had blasted him, dragged him, insulted him and even pulled him out from underneath the pedestal I put him on. I still to this day, I just don’t understand anything. The only thing I know is that I continue to manifest our eventual meeting in person, and what happens when we are face to face, that’s the good, bad and ugly.
These songs are universal. I don’t give a shit, but at some particular moment, and you cannot deny it, we’ve all had these feelings and we all can very simply compare and relate to these feelings. Don’t give me that shit, motherfucker. Yes you have and you fucking know it.
Bette mentions, “…when is it my turn to have someone grab ahold of me…” Absolutely never happened in my case. Maybe someone can tell me about this and how it feels. Since I cannot compare and relate to this experience, I’d really like to hear someone’s perspective.
Pariah she mentions, “…but its just a sweet sweet fantasy baby…” I know all about fantasy and I know all about reality too. I’ve fantasized about punching people in the face, but I know I can’t do that since they’re cheaper than spit.
Angela. I first heard this song done by Jennifer Holliday and she absolutely slays it. Though when I heard Angela’s version, I was gobsmacked. The simplicity in the way she delivered it, wow. The pain was real and the silence was deafening. The lyrics say, “…I’m on your side to be you…” I know that feeling. I will allow you, I will give the wide berth you need, but I’ll support you regardless if that is what is called for at that moment.
Janis. Her first solo project away from her main gig, The Manhattan Transfer. I was living in NYC when this album came out in the early 1980s. I was also in the midst of my second boyfriend, Johnson. Gawd. He was beautiful. Those dark eyes. Those full lips. That wiry and thick hair. His skin was so smooth. He was a great lover and a great boyfriend. I’m sorry it didn’t last. I moved to Brooklyn and he stayed in Queens. I typed the lyrics out and had a co-worker sign Janis’ name and she wrote, “Thank you for everything, Johnson. All my best, Janis.” Now, it was plagiarism but the heartfelt sentiment was front and center with Johnson. The lyrics says, “…everybody has their day…” Yes. Everyone will have a day, a moment, when they’ll rule the world. Then everyone else will rue the day that they did you dirt. “…underneath it all you crave affection…” Child. Please.
Jennifer Rush. “…without you in my life, I only exist…” What’s that feeling like? What does it mean to you? I know I can say quite clearly say that I do not know how people can have that feeling. I think I may have felt that way and possibly still do because I project that onto my mother. Without her, I wouldn’t be here. I just don’t merely exist with or without you. Trust and believe. Yes, through my all my moments in mental health crisis and moments of clarity, I know I exist because I have touched someone’s life. Good or bad, I know those who have encountered me certainly will not forget me. I’ll prompt them as I had done once before and I’ll watch them cringe. They’ll clench their sphincter and either get a lump in their throat or in their stomach.
Paul Simon. Art Garfunkel. Dayum y’all. Seriously y’all. Don’t tell me that you haven’t listened to this song and not felt it. If you say that you haven’t felt it, I’ll call BULLSHIT!! “…if I never loved I never would have cried…” You cannot say nor can you tell me that you’ve never cried over someone who could not love you back the way you wanted to be loved. “Debase myself for the love of another to see if I could stand not being wanted when I really wanted to be wanted.” Ntozake Shange. Dayum Skippy. When she wrote those words, I was just 16 when I saw “Colored Girls” on Broadway. That show, to this day, touched me in such a beautiful way. Then when I saw the movie that Tyler Perry did, I was sitting there in the audience in that movie theater in Austin lip syncing every word and giving you such a performance. Now some will ask how does a white guy know a black woman’s pain and how do you know her story? Simple answer: Shirley MacLaine - in a previous life you punk ass little bitch, but I am not asking you to believe. I’m just telling you my story.
I hold myself accountable for the pain and anguish I have caused my L.A. based photographer. I take ownership and responsibility for my actions towards him. It’s true, neither one of us knew back then and neither one of us will ever know in the years ahead. Though I will continue to manifest our eventual meeting. I know I have crossed the line many times with my photographer, there are some things that I will never do. “I’ll do anything for love but I won’t do that.
I’m back. I took a few days off.
Just yesterday day, as I was driving around, another song came on. This time it was Marshall Crenshaw. Yes, Bette did a cover of this song. “You’re my favorite waste of time.”
I took some more time off.
So I can think about my own words, my own feelings and I can easily vomit my feelings here where no one reads my shit. My drivel. Who gives a flying fuck on a rolling doughnut about this insignificant little shit who sits in front of keyboard for no apparent reason.
“Stay With Me” - is truly a heartache and when Bette did this song and put in that little bit of dialogue, well, it sent me over the edge. Who wouldn’t love to have their partner (or whatever label you decided to use like fuck buddy or friend with benefits), actually think about this song and imagine, if that person did not want you to go and after a little of bit of give and take; you two did actually work it out. “Fantasy” - well it is Pariah and she’s an entire subject unto herself. Yet when she puts in the beat and the chorus from The Tom Tom Club starring Tina Weymouth, it brings me back to being at the roller rink. Though the lyrics do tell you that it is a legitimate fantasy y’all living in because that’s how I feel about Pariah and this song. Again, please let me point out, sphincter muscles are like opinions, everybody got one. Now, looking at Angela versus Jennifer. Both renditions of the song absolutely slay. Though I had only heard Jennifer’s version for years and I know every breath in that song. However, I knew of Angela because my ex-boyfriend had turned me onto Angela. If memory serves, Cissy Houston had putt out an album with the song, “Break It To Me Gently,” and I was like, yo, it’s Cissy Houston. No flies, y’all. Even Cissy’s cover version of “Down In The Boondocks,” originally done by Billy Joe Royal, again, no flies. She ready to slay that shit and she did. Then when he made me listen to Angela Bofill’s version of “Break It…” I was beside myself. The ache, the pain, the raw emotion and her phrasing. That piece of cake was gone. The cookie was gone. No crumbs left. Just an empty plate and an unused napkin. BOOM! Angela owns it and there is no reason to re-record that song.
Now, there’s Janis Siegel. Originally with The Manhattan Transfer, this was her first solo project back in 1982. I clearly remember playing at a nightclub in Cambridge, MA, I had tickets and did not go to see her. Well, after that I went to see many shows by myself because I was sick and tired of begging someone to go with me. I would tell them, just show up. I’ll buy drinks, dinner and I’ll even pay for the taxi home. Yeah. Never again. No ma’am. Anyway, I digress. Even all these later, I truly love that song. I mean seriously, who wouldn’t want to give or receive someone’s love for no apparent reason. Parents and siblings are one thing, but just another person with whom you connect with on some level and when you’re together, the tension is palpable and it exudes from every single pore. Oh. Gawd. That would be beyond. However, we all know it ain’t happily ever after which is a song by Donna Summer. Great album.
Now, Jennifer Rush. Granddaughter of famed violinist Isaac Stern. Wildly popular in Europe and I’m thinking only one song that she co-wrote was made popular by Air Supply, Laura Brannigan and Celine Dion, “The Power of Love.” From my faulty memory, I had worked with a guy who invited me over to listen to Jennifer and also he turned me onto Dutch Singing Sensation, Anita Mayer. We sat there in his flat and listened to her catalogue. She even did a duet with Elton John. I feel it’s true, he is my one and only. I will most likely go to my grave without ever seeing him but I continue to manifest it, that we will meet. I know that he invaded my dreams and I usually don’t dream and I usually do not recall them as vividly as I remember this most recent one. He was there. As much as I attempt to deny those feelings, deny the images and deny it all, he was there. I cannot shake the feeling. I have scream, or very quietly say, I hate my life sometimes and the whole episode gets put back in its shoebox and placed back on the shelf in the closet of my memories (Reference to Curtis Stigers’ song, “To Be Loved.”)
“I Am A Rock,” we all can compare and relate to this song. We all have had these emotions at some point in our lives. We know that there are so many variations of being a rock or causing a rock slide on a dangerous curve in the middle of rainstorm. Yeah. It’s a two lane blacktop and the scenery is like a painting, picture perfect. But God Damn!! Who’s driving this internal combustion contraption? My mind runs to the many movies I’ve seen where the car is whipping down from a chateau on the side of mountain. There’s just a guard rail and the surf crashing below. By the way, the drop is at least a hundred meters.
I also know that using or referencing other people’s words can be a cop out. A crutch. A Hoyer Lift. Yet the universality of the words, the presentation by the person singing it resonates deep within. We’ve all seen and heard plenty of people saying that this song or that song saved me from my own hand. Without those words, without that song, I may not be here today. We’ve all heard it before. I can listen to Jacques Brel sing in French or in Flemish, and he can be so devastating. I’ve heard the song sung in English and I know every note, every breath in all three versions, but it wraps me up like a blanket on a rainy evening. I then feel safe and warm.
With my contentious relationship with my LA Based photographer, I leave you with this one last song to dissect. It’s by Linda Eder and it’s a cover of a Joni Mitchell song, “Both Sides.” Having called him once, I was so fucking high and I was in such a state of mind, and when he picked up the phone, I said to him, “It’s snowing, dude.” Stating the fucking obvious much? Yes, I was that high. He too could look out the window, and he could also see people coming into the lobby and stamp their feet and shake their coats. I was seventeen. I’m sixty-four now. I’ll always be his lighthouse keeper. I will perish alone on my gulag archipelago in the deepest recesses of my mind. Yet these songs will bring me joy. Though I think I’ll add one last song just to fuck with you. “Sick of You,” by GWAR.

The liveship Vivacia is about to undergo her quickening as Althea Vestrit’s father is carried on deck in his death-throes. Only to discover that the Vivacia has been signed away in her father’s will to her brutal brother-in-law, Kyle Haven...
Others plot to win or steal a liveship. The Paragon, known by many as the Pariah, went mad, turned turtle, and drowned his crew. Now he lies blind, lonely, and broken on a deserted beach. But greedy men have designs to restore him, to sail the waters of the Rain Wild River once more.

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow (2020)
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.
But when the Eastwood sisters -- James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna -- join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote -- and perhaps not even to live -- the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.
There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon (2013-present)
In 2059, Scion has taken over most of the world's cities, promising safety for all the citizens it deems worthy and wiping out clairvoyants wherever it can find them.
Paige Mahoney, though, is a clairvoyant--and a criminal just for existing. Paige is determined to fight Scion's power, and as part of the Seven Seals, Paige has found a use for her powers: she scouts for information by breaking into others' minds as they dream.
But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly--as soldiers in their army.
Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao (2021-present)
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn’t matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.
When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it’s to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister’s death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.
To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

And in the doing, it will take her to the edge of despair...and beyond. Hateful friend, loving enemy, beloved assassin; they can all wear the same glittering mask in this world, and Phèdre will get but one chance to save all that she holds dear.

Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in appearance, she can perhaps make up for in courage. When her father comes home with a tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must travel to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father insists that he will not let her go, but she responds, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"

One day, Han and his clan friend, Dancer, confront three young wizards setting fire to the sacred mountain of Hanalea. Han takes an amulet from Micah Bayar, son of the High Wizard, to keep him from using it against them. With a magical piece that powerful at stake, Han knows that the Bayars will stop at nothing to get it back.
Meanwhile, Raisa ana'Marianna, princess heir of the Fells, has her own battles to fight. She's just returned to court after three years of freedom in the mountains—riding, hunting, and working the famous clan markets. Raisa wants to be more than an ornament in a glittering cage. She aspires to be like Hanalea—the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. But her mother has other plans for her...
The Seven Realms tremble when the lives of Hans and Raisa collide, fanning the flames of the smoldering war between clans and wizards.

New, silly TF OC idea:
Pariah Carry, an Autobot that looks like an elf and whose alt mode is a small delivery truck or a (self-driving) sleigh.
They work only on Christmas Eve and deliver presents to children all around the world via teleportation or something similar. And they hate Christmas songs.
Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You has been looping in my mind for an hour and this is the result.

Nicki Minaj is the conductor of her own downfall. And it's sad to watch.
Rap legend has been actively polluting her legacy for quite some time
There’s a figure in American life who’s compulsively divisive. They govern by their own rules. They speak solely to the segment of society — albeit millions of followers — who lap up their Jim Jones-flavored Kool-Aid because, in this alternate reality, they’re the agents of truth and salvation. Any opposition is just an enemy of the state. Perhaps most importantly, too, misinformation is the highest form of currency.
No, not former President Donald Trump (though it applies to him, too). But given the last week in Black pop culture, that figure is Nicki Minaj.
What should be one of hip-hop’s sterling legacies has long been sullied by her support-at-all-costs dictatorship. Her alleged off-putting demeanor has circumvented anything she’s done for at least the past half-decade. Her closest affiliations and decisions have threatened to make her a pariah. And her catalog — despite its chart success — has produced bloated numbers and empty statistics primarily driven by a cult following who’ll support her regardless of her morals, targets or intentions. Nicki Minaj has become a cancer to an art form she once almost single-handedly carried on her back.

Megan Thee Stallion is running hip-hop. Deal with it.
On Wednesday, she joined Joe Budden’s Spaces on X, formerly known as Twitter, to discuss the fallout from Megan Thee Stallion’s new single “HISS,” — which could become the No. 1 song in the countrynext week. The aggressive invitation-for-smoke is presumably aimed at a cast of characters — most notably Nicki Minaj. In her rant, she blamed parties like YouTube and the “machine” for Megan Thee Stallion’s notoriety and the song’s success. She doubled down on making fun of the Houston rapper, saying she wanted her “Rihanna moment” — referring to the singer’s 2009 domestic violence incident with then-boyfriend Chris Brown — as a means to dilute her trauma stemming from the July 2020 shooting that landed singer/rapper Tory Lanez in prison. Nicki even went as far as to insinuate that Roc Nation is Megan’s puppeteer while avoiding mentioning the company’s founder, Jay-Z, or his wife, Beyoncé.
But a big part of the problem is that Nicki Minaj can’t lyrically squabble, not on wax and certainly not when she’s under pressure. Many of her direct shots at opponents have come on award show stages, at pop stars such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus or her former fellow American Idol judge Mariah Carey. Her past beefs with rappers such as Remy Ma or Cardi B have been one-sided and not necessarily in her favor. With her response to Megan Thee Stallion, “Big Foot” — a pieced-together arts and crafts project, at best — Nicki brought a knife to a gunfight. A pen to a test, as another New York MC once said while engaged in battle. And it’s a battle she herself, more than anyone else except Megan Thee Stallion, knew was bubbling for quite some time.

The 20 greatest hip-hop tours of all time
Nicki’s Spaces tirade came after the Queens, New York, rapper spent days spiraling on social media about Megan Thee Stallion. The last four years of Megan’s life have been filled with controversy, suicidal thoughts and anxiety. Suspected targets in “HISS” included rapper Drake, Lanez, her former best friend Kelsey Harris, former boyfriend Paridson “Pardi” Fontaine and more. The most poignant of the bars was seemingly directed at Nicki — an artist Megan herself once said she had been her fan since 2008 and she was one of her biggest inspirations.
“These h— don’t be mad at Megan, these h— mad at Megan’s Law/I don’t really know what the problem is, but I guarantee y’all don’t want me to start/B—-, you a p—-, never finna check me/Every chance you get, bet your weak a– won’t address me.”
Megan’s Law was signed into law in February 1996. It required registered sex offenders to publicly disclose their place of employment and residence to local law enforcement. Nicki Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, served 4½ years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted rape in 1994 when he was 16. Nicki Minaj and Petty were sued for witness tampering in 2021. Jennifer Hough, the survivor of the attempted rape, claimed the couple pressured her to recant her story after Petty was arrested shortly after moving to California for essentially failing to comply with Megan’s Law. Jelani Maraj, Nicki Minaj’s brother, was sentenced to 25 years to life for the sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl in 2017. Fair or not, her proximity to these heinous offenses has irreparably harmed her career.
“Nobody is saying that Nicki isn’t happy, [or] that Nicki’s man doesn’t love her, [or] that they don’t have a supportive relationship,” media personality and attorney Rachel Lindsay said on her Higher Learningpodcast with co-host Van Lathan. “But I just feel like aren’t you always tired of having to go off on somebody bringing up what actually happened? … She just gets so outraged anytime it’s brought up, but it’s true! At least as far as the record is concerned. I just wish she would just stop.”
Following the release of “HISS,” Nicki Minaj immediately took to social media to respond in a bizarre Instagram Live video where she soft-launched “Big Foot.” The song was filled with erratic thoughts of her lamenting the shooting that landed Lanez in prison, invoking Megan Thee Stallion’s mother, Holly Thomas, who died of brain cancer in 2019, and blasting Megan’s alleged sexual history. How the record came to be is a microcosm of where Nicki Minaj, an undisputed hip-hop icon in her own right, currently stands.
Nicki’s most recent album, Pink Friday 2, showcased moments of glory like “Barbie Dangerous” and introspective odes like “Are You Gone Already?” and “Just the Memories.” The album hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart for one week and is currently a top 100 album in the country. Her dominance, however, lives mainly on the internet. Online is where she’s most influential and her security most shielded.
America is no stranger to celebrity worship. Beyoncé has the Beyhive, Rihanna has her Navy, Justin Bieber has the Beliebers and Taylor Swift has the Swifties (which now includes the NFL). In a world where celebrity worship, or “stanning,” sits further on the maniacal side than charming, Nicki Minaj’s “Barbz” resemble a cult more than an online fan club. The local cemetery where Thomas is buried has reportedly alerted local authorities about increasing security due to alleged calls from Barbz to desecrate Thomas’ grave. Sadly, Nicki rarely does much to control those who hang on to her every word.

The next first ladies of rap
Despite last week’s drama, it’s nearly impossible to envision a world where she didn’t see a response coming. The two initially linked up in 2019. They soon collaborated on Megan Thee Stallion’s hit “Hot Girl Summer.” In August 2020, a month after Megan was shot, Nicki Minaj again praised her following the release of her Cardi B collaboration “WAP,” saying that she “was the perfect example that we can be fun and smart at the same time.”
Everything changed in 2021 when both artists unfollowed each other on social media. Subliminal disses from Nicki Minaj followed, like 2021’s “Seeing Green” and last year’s “Ruby Red Da Sleeze,” which contained bars referring to her alleged alcoholism and her Doritos Super Bowl commercial. In the fall of 2022, Nicki Minaj alleged that she once tried to get her to consume alcohol while she was attempting to get pregnant, a claim Megan Thee Stallion vehemently denied.
Nicki Minaj claims to have several more songs in the tuck should this beef continue. It begs two questions. One, does she herself consider “Big Foot” better than “HISS”? And two, why lead with this one, an objective dud if there are other options?
Megan Thee Stallion has not responded since dropping “HISS,” opting to use the attention to promote the song, her upcoming album and tour. Nicki, who prided herself for years on how she commands a media cycle, essentially got TKO’d at her own game. The same thing happened to her after Remy Ma dropped her colossal diss record “shETHER.” It happened again when Cardi B attempted to fight her at New York Fashion Week in 2018, which promptly revived conversations about respectability politics.

Meet Lola Brooke, the Brooklyn rapper taking music by storm
Nicki Minaj’s impact over the last 15 years is undeniable, and her role in the evolution of women in rap is objectively unimpeachable. She’s done it in many ways, from underground mixtapes to outrapping established stars through fashion, album sales and awards. She is a star, with no disclaimer on gender. Nicki Minaj should be celebrated as a rap legend. She can rap and is amazing at it when she decides to be. All of which makes her response — with years of tensions marinating below the surface — even more head-scratching. The only approval came from the same fans who would support her regardless of what she does.
It’s impossible to predict if Nicki can fix her public image — but it’s clear at this point she doesn’t care to or even have to. She hasn’t been the superstar she once was in her mind — or the Barbz’s — in years. And she likely never will be again. But much like the aforementioned former president, rapper Kanye West or even Lanez, there’s value in cultivating one’s own alternate reality because it means there’s never any reason to leave.
How the Head Barbie in Charge is discussed in American hip-hop and pop culture now is primarily based on the person she is, not the feats she accomplished. The pathetic part is it never had to be like this. What’s even more pathetic is that she doesn’t care to acknowledge it at all.
Justin Tinsley is a senior culture writer for Andscape. He firmly believes “Cash Money Records takin’ ova for da ’99 and da 2000” is the single most impactful statement of his generation.Nicki Minaj is the conductor of her own downfall. And it's sad to watch. Rap legend has been actively polluting her legacy for quite some time

“Mudbound” also arrives at a fraught time for the country, as white nationalists and the Ku Klux Klan take to the streets, emboldened by Donald Trump. Rees spent the day before her film’s Sundance premiere in Washington, D.C., protesting at the inauguration. “Everybody was worried that I wasn’t going to make it to the premiere,” she says. “It was really profound to be doing that one day and then be doing this film the next day. One’s kind of the short-term push, and the film is the long-term push,” she says.
“Mudbound” was a different movie when it first came to Rees in 2015. An early draft of the script by Virgil Williams, based on a novel by Hillary Jordan, focused more on the McAllan family — a father, Pappy (eventually played by Jonathan Banks), who lives with his two sons (Clarke and Hedlund) and his daughter-in-law (Mulligan). The Jackson family, who are their black neighbors (Blige, Rob Morgan and Mitchell), weren’t as fleshed out. “That just felt a little sweet for the kind of story I wanted to tell,” Rees says about rewriting the script. “I wanted to activate it, really make this a story about two families that are clawing their way upwards.”

Carey Mulligan is such an underrated actress. Her and especially Mary j. Blidge in Mudbound were incredible. I really can’t wait to see more projects from Dee Rees too!
“Carey Mulligan is such an underrated actress.” Which is surprising because her filmography is STACKED! Mary J. Blige is underrated (as an actress, not a singer lol) as well imo.
YES! ‘Bessie’ and ‘Pariah’ are great films!
