I’ve been working on improving my design skills and I am so honored to have been commissioned by Ghost Furnace Podcast to design a logo for a sticker! Thank you so much burndar for this opportunity, it was not only fun but helped me improve my design skills!
-
A little bit about Ghost Furnace and some episode recommendations: The Ghost Furnace Podcast is a paranormal podcast based in Pennsylvania (hence the Keystone in the logo! I’m a Californian who’s never been to PA, so I also learned a bit while working on this!) A few episodes that I recommend are Ep. 35 - Mile 127, Ep. 45 - The Black Cross, and Eps. 55 and 74 with PA author and folklorist Thomas White!

CW // Witchcraft / Religion / Paranormal - LONG POST - I was listening to a podcast about paranormal and psychic stuff and the presenters said something that really got to me - in a positive way
They were talking about the Warrens and how they influenced the general idea we have nowadays about the spiritual world, specially about ghosts and demons, and how much of their teachings were heavily based on christian beliefs
So why did that get to me? Because I actually thought those things were true, without knowing they influenced by a belief system I'm not part of anymore, and that was creating a barrier in my spiritual journey (as I'm a beginner witch)
The presenters explained how the Warrens were very religious, from catholic households, and how the idea that "demons and ghosts are all evil and scary and will hurt you" came from that catholic belief they had. And as they got famous and had such a heavy influence on the paranormal and spiritual community, those ideas started to be seen as the truth
Things like "don't use a Ouija board or you'll open yourself to demons" or "don't use tarot cards because evil beings will get to you" and things like that, often related to some type of divination method, would be seen as real and 100% true and people would actually be scared of these practices
What is the problem with that? Well... the problem is that creating that fear about these practices and these spiritual beings is actually what makes them "get to you". They feed from that fear, they want you to be scared
If you use anything as a divination tool* (ghost equipment included) with the idea that "you will get spooky stuff" or "you will talk to a negative entity" or anything like that, the negative beings will use that
And I believed in that. A lot. But I didn't know why, because it was such a common sense thing that I didn't really thought about it much
But, as they were explaining on the podcast, if you put your intention, while using the divination tool, into something positive, without being scared of it and only allowing positive beings to talk to you, bad stuff won't happen
I'm not saying that everybody should try divination out of nowhere.
Even tho it might sound easy to just "be positive and do it", it's not like that. If you wanna try divination you should learn how to do it properly and how to protect yourself spiritually. However, being scared of divination tools will only make things worse if you come to use one in the future.
And listening to that episode of the podcast is what made me actually realize that I didn't (and shouldn't) be scared of doing divination, and it helped me break some of the barriers I had in my spiritual journey
* Divination Tool? Divination Tools are objects or tools used to communicate with the spiritual world in many ways, such as talking to deities/entities/spirits, predicting the future, interpreting dreams, etc.
They can be objects designed specifically for that (like, tarot cards, Ouija boards, oracle cards, crafted pendulums, etc.) or be made with normal daily objects (like dice, stones with runes, necklaces as pendulums, etc.) and can be used for more simple answers, as yes/no questions, or more complex answer, like the meaning of a tarot card. Both options require interpretation, as they're often not direct answers
Ghost equipment can be considered a divination tool since they're often used by the ghost hunters to get answers from the entities in a haunted location. For example:
Yes/No answers with flashlights
Yes/No answer with REM-POD
Yes/No answers through Music Box (motion sensor)
Answers through the Spirit Box
Answers through the ghost recorders
NOTE: I'm not an expert witch, always check your information on multiple sources.

Why is it "easier" to capture paranormal evidence using analog tools?
Tumblr media
I've been writing a lot about how so many ghost hunting tools feel very analog. So many of them seem like relics from the 1980s and 1990s, like the spirit box, which is simply a modified radio.
I think that innately, we trust these more physical, analog ways of cataloging and interacting with the paranormal. Yes, it's easier to fake a digital photograph of strange phenomena or use a Spirit Box app on your phone. But for some reason, there's a sense that it's easier for the paranormal to interact with these more physical, analog, retro forms of communication and documentation.
I struggle to put my finger on exactly what this is. After all, why do we think that a ghost, spirit, or other paranormal phenomena would have a harder time interacting with a digital device like a smartphone or a laptop, than it would with a older electronic device like a radio or a instant camera?
Shouldn't it be easier to adjust a line of code than to move something in the physical world? After all, if an entity is incorporeal, and so much of our modern technology is as well, then why wouldn't they be able to communicate with us through our smartphones, tablets, and computers just as easily—or more easily—than they might through analog media?
Thinking about this using the Ovilus
You could argue that an entity couldn't interact with modern technology in the same way that it could, say, a film camera, because it's more complex. Maybe my example of an entity interacting with digital devices on a code level is absurd. That argument is fair, but if that's the case, why would a ghost more easily interact with popular digital paranormal investigation gear, like an Ovilus?
While the Ovilus is a (sort of) recent invention, dating back to the late 2000s or so , it has the vibe of an old piece of tech. It's a purpose-built device that takes environmental readings and translates them into words (and other output, like an image ).
My understanding is that this is how the typical Ovilus works (though I assume there's some amount of variation between models): it contains a word bank of ~2,000 words. Each of those words seems to be correlated to a different EMF reading (according to this write-up, at least.) The device monitors EMF readings, then when there's a fluctuation in the amount of EMF in the area, the Ovilus outputs the word that is associated with that reading.
The Ovilus is a very cool and inventive device. I've only used one in person once, but I'd love to get the chance to again. However, there are a number of criticisms you could level at the Ovilus, and many of them are very fair. (I tend to be of the opinion that treating paranormal investigation as scientific experiments—both from an earnest POV and a debunking POV—is missing the point. But that's something for another day.)
My big question here, though, related to analog vs. digital ghost hunting question, is: How does the entity you're communicating with know what words are in the word bank and what EMF readings they're associated with?
To me, this puts the Ovilus in the same camp as something like a modern smartphone: it's a digital device that can interact with and gather data from the world around it, but it operates in a way that's is opaque to (most) humans and entities alike.
Anyone can understand the basic mechanics behind a film camera or a cassette tape—they're straightforward machines, and the operator can open it up and see the physical thing that the data is stored on (the film or magnetic tape, respectively.) So it feels plausible that it'd be straightforward for an entity to interact with. But digital ghost hunting devices that turn environmental readings into words via code and databases? Less so.
Synchronicity as a tool
I'm not saying that the Ovilus doesn't "work," I'm just saying that this piece of physical gear is likely best viewed from a synchronistic standpoint. My credulity is strained by the idea that an entity could understand what words are affiliated with each EMF reading and manipulate the EMF based on that. Like any tool, something like the Ovilus should be woven into the larger narrative of an investigation rather than have its results taken on their own.
What do I mean by that? Basically, if an investigator is using an Ovilus and gets the word "demon" and then thinks that means that they're communicating with a demon, with no other evidence to support that, then I think they're jumping to conclusions.
However, if an investigator is, say, using an Ovilus while someone else is doing the Estes Method, and both the Ovilus and the Estes session start to output the same words or variations on a theme, then that's something to pay attention to and look into.
Basically, any investigation device is probably at its best when its data is viewed as part of a larger narrative of an investigation, rather than when taken at face value.
But if a large contingency of the ghost hunting world is willing to consider the Ovilus as a potentially effective ghost hunting tool, why does it seem like there's so much more skepticism when it comes to considering the possibility that entities could communicate using modern technology? [^1]
Okay, I know I just wrote a whole blog post about that yesterday, but I mean setting aside things that are being manipulated by algorithms and "machine learning." So, yes, there are good reasons not to trust the technology that we use these days. (In addition to the ease of fakery—accidental or intentional—we now all know that our phones spy on us and track our every move.)
But there's something else afoot here. While plenty of folks (including me) do put stock in the synchronicities that show up on our computers and smartphones, I just don't think as many people people generally believe that ghosts are able to interact with those devices.
Like I said, most people don't understand how smartphones and computers work, or at least not as well as we grok radios and instant cameras. But again, why do we seem to think that incorporeal forms would have an easier time interacting with something physical then they would have interacting with something digital?
Or here's a question: are paranormal phenomena interacting with us on our digital devices, but we can't tell, since anything could be written off as a glitch or algorithmic foible? I wouldn't be shocked if that were the case. After all, isn't the digital world—cyberspace, or whatever you want to call it—potentially closer to what the spirit world might be like? Isn't cyberspace place where time and space work differently, and complex, "invisible" forces carry great sway—in a way that isn't so different from some imaginations of other realms of reality?
[^1] Not all investigators feel this way, of course! I'm always a fan of Liminal Earth's approach to the paranormal, which is to have an open mind and try to connect to weirdness in creative ways. They've even shared a way to make custom a digital spirit box using mp3s.

What's it like podcasting? (Chalena)
It's a question I get asked a lot. It's fun - it honestly really is but it has been very difficult and a learning curve. I know I know I definitely have not been keeping up with this blog, but I am going to start now. I want to see how far this journey takes us.
In the beginning, it was really hard to find our voices. Courtney and I, although are very talkative when it's just us - can get a little shy in front of the camera/mic. Our biggest fear was always, "am I going to stay something stupid? Stumble over my words? Am I going to offend someone". We are still getting over this curve now - though being only 7 episodes in there is a huge difference. We decided that we were going to be ourselves - our true, authentic, unfiltered selves. What is the point of podcasting if not? We're not just having a conversation with each other but with our audience as well, and we want you guys to join in on the conversation! If you don't like us - fine - we're not for you. We can't fit in with everyone's taste.
Now, we did start podcasting in the middle of our Vet Tech Program. It honestly was supposed to be just a fun hobby for us. Now going back and thinking about it, it was an incredibly crazy idea. This podcasting is like another job that doesn't pay well, the only reason I do it is because I truly enjoy it. It give me something else to think about other than Vet Med, and anyone in Vet Med knows how draining and life consuming it is. If I didn't have this podcast - I would be at home probably depressed. I met my goal, what else is there to live for if I have nothing to work for? I would just be lost if I wasn't actively working on something.
Currently, I am working full time as a Vet Assistant, while studying for the VTNE to be a full fledged Vet Tech. Has this been a hurdle? Absolutely, I feel like I'm having to juggle two different lives. On top of that - I recently discovered that I may have an autoimmune disorder. My test results came back flagging for Hypothyroidism in the near future and a positive on Anti-Nuclear AB. The latter can still flag positive on a healthy person - however I have been suffering symptoms for over 6 months. I know I know, I should have gone sooner but I just didn't have the time or money for that. If I wasn't studying, I was at my clinicals and if I wasn't at my clinicals, I was at work, and if I wasn't at work, I was at home taking care of all the things I didn't do during the week. I was constantly tired, but I thought it was just from my busy schedule and endless amounts of studying. Nothing an energy drink couldn't fix, right? WRONG. I should have known that something was wrong when I was sleep extremely exhausted and unfocused when I was taking my prescribed ADHD medications along with 2-3 energy drinks a day. I unfortunately only noticed when I started working full time, with shorter working hours and a less busy schedule, and I was passing out at 8pm and waking up for work at 8am (I'm supposed to be there at 7:20), regularly, and it still wasn't enough.
So how do I podcast with all this chaos going on in my life? Easy. I enjoy it. That's it. That's the secret, you have to actually like it and understand that even though you podcast for an audience, at the end of the day your podcast is for you to be you. So what, if you only have 15 listeners? I know sometimes when you start out doing this - you feel like you're not enough. You're not smart, funny, pretty, etc, enough and a big audience is essentially approval from other people. Validation is what we search for (in most every situation). I am here to tell you (and myself) that you are enough. Your thoughts, your ideas, your beliefs, they matter, you matter.
So yeah, that's what it's like podcasting. It's an emotional rollercoaster when you mix it in with your own crazy life - but at the end of the day it's rewarding on its own.

I've been listening to this podcast lately and I super wanted to mention it to y'all. It's called 6 Degrees of John Keel and it's mostly an interview show but the hosts interview people from all kinds of occult backgrounds, including witches and pagan authors along with paranormal researchers and investigators. It's insightful, it's funny, they are extremely on point about how to deal with the Fair Folk, and in general their main interest is just High Strangeness and what they call "Experiencers": people who have A Lot of very woo experiences.
So like, if that sounds interesting to you, go check it out!

I’ve been waiting almost 2 years to do my podcast cause my “best friend” asked to do it with me. I wrote the script and had everything ready to go and she kept putting it off.
Now that I’ve moved on and realized she’s a horrible friend, I’m just gonna do it myself.
