Something nice/interesting for a change! Recently I learned that the 3rd ever Paralympics, in 1968, were actually held in Israel. I had no idea.
ngl i always assumed Israel wouldn't be allowed to host an olympic type event because too many countries would boycott. But I suppose since the Paralympic games were still in their infancy it didn't make that much of a difference?
The games were supposed to be in Mexico City like the Olympics, but the Mexican government backed out and the Israeli government offered to host the games in Tel Aviv.
I also found out that the Paralympics exist because of the International Stoke Mandeville Games, which were created in 1948 by Ludwig Guttman for WWII veterans with spinal cord injuries. Ludwig Guttman was a German-British Jewish neurologist.
The first four Paralympics including 1968 were actually just called International Stoke Mandeville Games when they happened, and the title of Paralympics was applied retroactively.
Here's an image of Sir Ludwig Guttman giving the gold medal to Australian archer Tony South, in the 1968 Paralympics.
thanks, I’msad!
It’s kinda sad that you can associate it with Jews if it’s seen as low prestige such as comics or film but as soon as it gets popular they can’t have that
This photo is so great, it truly tells a thousand words about what the early paralypics where like.
How did those veterans get on the winner’s podium if it doesn’t have ramps, tho?
but honestly good for Tel-Aviv and sponsoring a Jewish Doctor’s race for disabled veterans when Mexico decided that a bit too weird and niche

THURSDAY HERO: Dr. Ludwig Guttman
Dr. Ludwig Guttmann was a Jewish-German neurosurgeon who had the radical idea that patients with spinal cord injuries could be competitive athletes. He created the Paralympic Games and forever changed the way society views disabled people – and the way they view themselves.
Ludwig was born in Germany in 1899 to a religious family. At age 18, he volunteered in a hospital that treated mining workers. One day, a young man was admitted who had broken his back in a mining accident. The patient was paralyzed from the waist down, but the rest of his body was strong. Ludwig was shocked when the hospital staff told him there was nothing to be done for people with spinal cord injuries but wait for them to die. They wrapped this vigorous young man’s body in plaster and moved him to an isolation wing, where he developed sepsis and died five weeks later. “Although I saw many more victims suffering the same fate,” Ludwig said, “it was the picture of that young man which remained indelibly fixed in my memory.”
After attending medical school in Freiburg, Ludwig worked with Europe’s leading neurologist Dr. Otfrid Foerster. In 1928, Ludwig started a neurosurgical unit at a hospital in Hamburg, and by 1933 he was considered one of the top neurosurgeons in Germany. When the Nazis came to power Jews were banned from practicing medicine and Ludwig lost his job. In 1939 he left Germany with his family and moved to Oxford, England, where he worked as a researcher.
In 1943, Ludwig was asked by the British Government to direct a new Spinal Injury Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He agreed to take the job, but only if he was free to treat patients as he saw fit without any outside interference. Ludwig was determined to change the medical establishment’s defeatist attitude toward spinal cord injuries. He believed that patients could lead full, independent and happy lives. At Stoke Mandeville, Ludwig instituted educational programs so that patients could learn new skills to make them employable. These programs included carpentry, typing, and watch repair.
A crucial part of the Stoke Mandeville rehabilitation program was athletics. Since there was virtually no precedent for wheelchair sports, Ludwig and his staff had to make them up. The first sport was wheelchair polo using walking sticks and a puck, soon to be replaced with wheelchair basketball. The first athletic competition at Stoke Mandeville took place on July 28, 1948 – the same day as the London Olympics. Fourteen injured service people competed (12 men and 2 women) in one sport, archery. A trophy cup was awarded to the winner.
Only one year later, the competition had grown to include more hospitals, more participants, and more sports. Ludwig said, “I foresaw the time when this sports event would be truly international and the Stoke Mandeville Games would achieve world fame as the disabled person’s equivalent of the Olympic Games.” In 1952, a group of disabled Dutch veterans became the first competitors from overseas. By 1954, there were athletes from Canada, Australia, Finland, Egypt and Israel. In the late 1950’s, Ludwig reached out to the Olympic Games Committee to see if the Stoke Mandeville Games could be scheduled to coincide with the 1960 Olympics in Rome. The Olympic Committee agreed, and disabled athletes came to Rome from 21 countries, playing in the same facilities and sharing the same accommodations as the able-bodied athletes.
The games became known as the Paralympics. Ludwig died in 1980, but his dream continues to grow. The Paralympics now features over 4000 athletes competing in 28 sports.
For refusing to accept the status quo, and giving hope and inspiration to generations of disabled athletes, we honor Dr. Ludwig Guttmann as this week’s Thursday Hero at Accidental Talmudist.

Brazil thrives and says goodbye to the 2024 Paralympic Games in the top five for the first time
Athletics and swimming stand out in the competition; both sports celebrate historic records
Brazil ended its participation in the Paris Paralympics among the top five countries on the medal table, beating its own podium record and celebrating the best ranking ever. There were 89 medals: 23 golds, 25 silvers and 38 bronzes. The country surpassed the number of golds in a single edition. The previous record – 22 medals – was set in Tokyo 2020.
The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB, in Portuguese) expected these results, which foresaw good numbers for this competition. In the last four editions, the country had been in the top ten, which gave the CPB an optimistic projection for this edition, according to Rafael Reis, a specialist in Paralympic sport and doctoral student at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR, in Portuguese).
“They worked with some figures, including for the financing of Paralympic sports. So, it was more or less what the committee expected,” he says.
In addition to the record number of podiums, Brazil celebrated two other historic achievements. The country beat the 200-medal mark in athletics, with Thiago Paulino's silver in the weight throw; and 150 in swimming, also with a silver medal. The winner was swimmer Gabriel Bandeira, in the men’s 100-meter backstroke. In total, Brazil returned home with 35 medals in swimming and 26 in athletics.

I love the Olympic au 🥰 🤺🤸🏼♀️ Tell me more about when Ava sees Beatrice fence (live) for the first time? 🙏🏼 I have this feeling she will say and/or do inappropriate things 🤣 Not dirty or anything, just things that doesn’t fit in with the normal audience. How will Bea react? Did she know Ava would be there, or was it a surprise? Maybe Ava is there because she forgot to ask for Bea’s number 😆📲 And that’s been bothering her since the Olympics! And Bea is not on social media, of course.
okay anon i am back with some time and some olympics noodling!
so i'm thinking maybe there's an exhibition or some kind of event, a youth event would be hella cute or even some collab with the Paralympics would be cool too - let's go with all the above why not lol
and let's say that Ava's there as well - oh okay it's this exhibition event that medalists are participating in and fencing is up first and Beatrice isn't nervous per se, she's just aware - very aware of a gaze of a certain breaker who's looking at her with just as much awe as the children gathered around the stage.
"your heart eyes are showing," comes a murmur at her shoulder and Beatrice straightens, glaring at Lilith from the corner of her eye, or at least as much as she can what with all these eyes on them. which Lilith is well aware and taking advantage of, if the smirk on her face is any hint. "you're welcome."
Beatrice barely holds herself back from rolling her eyes because she certainly didn't need to deal with the press reaction to that. she's not on social media - personally, at least - for a reason but she'd rather not have herself or her team have to field any inane questions about her "behavior" in public.
then there's a voice in her head that reminds her faintly -annoyingly- of her mother, sharp tones about conduct unbecoming of a lady. 'well what if i don't want to become one,' another voice answers: her own, young and rebellious in a way she hadn't allowed herself to be back then. thinks about how she chose instead to become an athlete, to become strong and fast and independent and - she glances down at the medal around her neck - a winner.
glances again at Ava. thinks also: how she's becoming more herself.
there's a cheer and an unsubtle nudge from Lilith as Beatrice finally notices one of the staff members gesturing towards them. they step up to the stage, smiling and waving as they're introduced and they go through the basic forms, answering questions only young minds can think of and voice ('have you ever tried fencing on rollerskates??' 'what's the most swords you can hold in one hand?' 'could you use these for cooking? or like! making s'mores!').
then Lilith settles across from her and Beatrice takes her position as well, familiar and ready and - light, she realizes as they all but fly towards each other. maybe it's the lack of pressure now that everything's all said and done; now that she's won. maybe it's the awed gasps and the genuine childish cheers. maybe it's the flushed face at the side of the stage, clapping her hands above her head as they take their bows and step off the stage to allow for the next demonstration.
Lilith takes one look at Beatrice, already turned towards Ava, and shakes her head, nudges Beatrice again before she loudly takes her leave - something about suddenly feeling nauseous, swiftly and smartly moving out of Beatrice's reach. Ava glances between them, a question adorably tilting her head (a part of Beatrice realizes now what Lilith meant) but Beatrice just shakes her head.
"you're up next, right?"
Ava nods enthusiastically, already going on about how she loves doing these kinds of events, how much she'd wanted this kind of thing when she was a kid - and Beatrice remembers, from the interviews she'd watched in the safety of her bed, the yearning in Ava's eyes and her voice during interviews; but she's here, in front of her, now with bright eyes and an even brighter laugh and Beatrice knows that if this were a match, she would have already lost; hopes that this is a match in a different sense.
"so uh," Ava says, suddenly and uncharacteristically hesitant. Beatrice sharpens her attention, tunes out the crowd - it isn't hard, really, not with her.
"it's totally okay to say no and i just noticed you're not really on social media which is like super smart and i just wanted to to see if you'd like to keep in touch? only if you want to too," Ava hurries to add, nervous and shy and Beatrice can't help but smile.
"of course i do," she says, and it's easy to be honest with Ava, easy to be herself.
they exchange their contact information with wide, giddy grins, just in time for breaking to be called up to the stage. "watch me?" Ava asks with a wink, handing her medal to Beatrice "for safekeeping" and Beatrice nods - perhaps a little too fast because Lilith snorts and mutters something like "you're doing it again" but this time, Beatrice can't bring herself to care as she watches Ava light up the stage, golden like a second sun.
#jt answers#jt writes fic#olympics au#idk about events or if they wear their medals and shit#i'm just playing here lol#thanks again anon always happy to revisit this au!#avatrice

What's in the medal winners box at the 2024 Olympics in Paris? 🇫🇷
The box, measuring about 40 centimetres, contains the official poster of this year's Summer Games. Architectural landmarks star in the "utopian" poster for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The iconic poster is an imagined city stadium open to the world.
French artist Ugo Gattoni has created a duo of intricately hand-drawn posters for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which can function independently or combine seamlessly to create a single composition. It marks the first time that posters for both summer games were designed together as a diptych.
The posters tell a singular story about the games via a hyperreal depiction of Paris incorporating 47 Olympic and Paralympic sports alongside various architectural landmarks.
His aim was to create a series of micro-stories based around familiar Paris monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais, the Arc de Triomphe and the Trocadéro, where British studio Gustafson Porter + Bowman added an amphitheatre and a green corridor for the games.
In Gattoni's condensed version of Paris, these landmarks rub shoulders with some of the sporting venues used for the games including the Stade de France, which hosts the athletics, rugby sevens, and will host the Para-athletics
The river Seine is represented along with some of its famous bridges including Pont Neuf and Pont Alexandre III. The coast of Teahupo'o in Tahiti, French Polynesia, where the surfing events are held, is pictured in the background.
Gattoni is an illustrator and former swimmer known for his large-format works that can take months or even years to complete – spent more than 2,000 hours creating the illustrations used for the posters.
Also included in the detailed fresco are several symbols related to the games, such as the Olympic rings and the symbol of the Paralympic Games, the three agitos (Latin for “I move”)
The Paris 2024 mascots – modelled on Phrygian caps – are playfully integrated into the scene in multiple places, along with the gold-medal-shaped emblem designed for the games, which was unveiled in 2019.
The symmetrical Olympic Torch created for the games by designer Mathieu Lehanneur can be seen emerging from the water at one end of a pier. At the opposite end, a hand holds the Paris 2024 medals, which feature a real piece of the Eiffel Tower.
The illustration is also available as a colouring poster. Some 40,000 characters are depicted in the posters, with an equal number of men and women in the foreground to symbolise the equality of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Princess of Wales’ Stats - Third Quarter
Due to Catherine’s health issues, we have rarely seen her this year, so this won’t be my usual format. I will, however, cover when we have seen or heard from her:
On July 6th, Catherine posted a rare personal tweet after the retirement of my secret crush British tennis legend Andy Murray at Wimbleon
On July 14th, the Princess of Wales, along with her daughter (Princess Charlotte) and sister (Pippa), attended the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Final. She then presented the trophies to the runner up (Novak Djokovic) and the winner (Carlos Alcaraz)
The following day (July 15th), William and Catherine released a photograph of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis watching the Euro Finals the night before
On August 11th, William and Catherine appeared in a video with British celebrities, sporting legends and also Snoop Dogg to celebrate the success of Team GB at the Olympics
William, Catherine and their children were spotted at the Gone Wild Festival, which ran from August 10th-11th
On August 24th, William and Catherine posted a personal good luck message to Paralympics GB on Twitter
The next day, the Wales family were seen driving to church in Balmoral
On September 9th, Kensington Palace released a video, made by Will Warr, and an accompanying statement from Catherine. The video showed Catherine and her family, while the statement confirmed the end of her chemotherapy and explained she will now continue to recover
A press story appeared on September 12th which suggested William and Catherine had watched George take his first flying lesson at the end of the summer
On September 18th, the Princess of Wales held an Early Years Meeting at Windsor Castle
On September 22nd, William and Catherine were once again spotted driving to church in Balmoral - they were enjoying a weekend in Balmoral without their children
On September 24th, the Princess of Wales held a Meeting at Windsor Castle to discuss her annual christmas concert
On September 26th, Catherine attended a matinee performance of Akram Khan’s Giselle and sent a personal tweet
This equates to three official engagements, one official video statement and four personal social media posts, as well as one photograph of the children. She was also spotted once in August and twice in September.
