THURSDAY HERO: Dr. Ludwig Guttman
Dr. Ludwig Guttmann was a Jewish-German neurosurgeon who had the radical idea that patients with spinal cord injuries could be competitive athletes. He created the Paralympic Games and forever changed the way society views disabled people – and the way they view themselves.
Ludwig was born in Germany in 1899 to a religious family. At age 18, he volunteered in a hospital that treated mining workers. One day, a young man was admitted who had broken his back in a mining accident. The patient was paralyzed from the waist down, but the rest of his body was strong. Ludwig was shocked when the hospital staff told him there was nothing to be done for people with spinal cord injuries but wait for them to die. They wrapped this vigorous young man’s body in plaster and moved him to an isolation wing, where he developed sepsis and died five weeks later. “Although I saw many more victims suffering the same fate,” Ludwig said, “it was the picture of that young man which remained indelibly fixed in my memory.”
After attending medical school in Freiburg, Ludwig worked with Europe’s leading neurologist Dr. Otfrid Foerster. In 1928, Ludwig started a neurosurgical unit at a hospital in Hamburg, and by 1933 he was considered one of the top neurosurgeons in Germany. When the Nazis came to power Jews were banned from practicing medicine and Ludwig lost his job. In 1939 he left Germany with his family and moved to Oxford, England, where he worked as a researcher.
In 1943, Ludwig was asked by the British Government to direct a new Spinal Injury Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He agreed to take the job, but only if he was free to treat patients as he saw fit without any outside interference. Ludwig was determined to change the medical establishment’s defeatist attitude toward spinal cord injuries. He believed that patients could lead full, independent and happy lives. At Stoke Mandeville, Ludwig instituted educational programs so that patients could learn new skills to make them employable. These programs included carpentry, typing, and watch repair.
A crucial part of the Stoke Mandeville rehabilitation program was athletics. Since there was virtually no precedent for wheelchair sports, Ludwig and his staff had to make them up. The first sport was wheelchair polo using walking sticks and a puck, soon to be replaced with wheelchair basketball. The first athletic competition at Stoke Mandeville took place on July 28, 1948 – the same day as the London Olympics. Fourteen injured service people competed (12 men and 2 women) in one sport, archery. A trophy cup was awarded to the winner.
Only one year later, the competition had grown to include more hospitals, more participants, and more sports. Ludwig said, “I foresaw the time when this sports event would be truly international and the Stoke Mandeville Games would achieve world fame as the disabled person’s equivalent of the Olympic Games.” In 1952, a group of disabled Dutch veterans became the first competitors from overseas. By 1954, there were athletes from Canada, Australia, Finland, Egypt and Israel. In the late 1950’s, Ludwig reached out to the Olympic Games Committee to see if the Stoke Mandeville Games could be scheduled to coincide with the 1960 Olympics in Rome. The Olympic Committee agreed, and disabled athletes came to Rome from 21 countries, playing in the same facilities and sharing the same accommodations as the able-bodied athletes.
The games became known as the Paralympics. Ludwig died in 1980, but his dream continues to grow. The Paralympics now features over 4000 athletes competing in 28 sports.
For refusing to accept the status quo, and giving hope and inspiration to generations of disabled athletes, we honor Dr. Ludwig Guttmann as this week’s Thursday Hero at Accidental Talmudist.

Brazil thrives and says goodbye to the 2024 Paralympic Games in the top five for the first time
Athletics and swimming stand out in the competition; both sports celebrate historic records
Tumblr media
Brazil ended its participation in the Paris Paralympics among the top five countries on the medal table, beating its own podium record and celebrating the best ranking ever. There were 89 medals: 23 golds, 25 silvers and 38 bronzes. The country surpassed the number of golds in a single edition. The previous record – 22 medals – was set in Tokyo 2020.
The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB, in Portuguese) expected these results, which foresaw good numbers for this competition. In the last four editions, the country had been in the top ten, which gave the CPB an optimistic projection for this edition, according to Rafael Reis, a specialist in Paralympic sport and doctoral student at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR, in Portuguese).
“They worked with some figures, including for the financing of Paralympic sports. So, it was more or less what the committee expected,” he says.
In addition to the record number of podiums, Brazil celebrated two other historic achievements. The country beat the 200-medal mark in athletics, with Thiago Paulino's silver in the weight throw; and 150 in swimming, also with a silver medal. The winner was swimmer Gabriel Bandeira, in the men’s 100-meter backstroke. In total, Brazil returned home with 35 medals in swimming and 26 in athletics.

What's in the medal winners box at the 2024 Olympics in Paris? 🇫🇷
The box, measuring about 40 centimetres, contains the official poster of this year's Summer Games. Architectural landmarks star in the "utopian" poster for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The iconic poster is an imagined city stadium open to the world.
French artist Ugo Gattoni has created a duo of intricately hand-drawn posters for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which can function independently or combine seamlessly to create a single composition. It marks the first time that posters for both summer games were designed together as a diptych.
Tumblr media
The posters tell a singular story about the games via a hyperreal depiction of Paris incorporating 47 Olympic and Paralympic sports alongside various architectural landmarks.
Tumblr media
His aim was to create a series of micro-stories based around familiar Paris monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais, the Arc de Triomphe and the Trocadéro, where British studio Gustafson Porter + Bowman added an amphitheatre and a green corridor for the games.
In Gattoni's condensed version of Paris, these landmarks rub shoulders with some of the sporting venues used for the games including the Stade de France, which hosts the athletics, rugby sevens, and will host the Para-athletics
Tumblr media
The river Seine is represented along with some of its famous bridges including Pont Neuf and Pont Alexandre III. The coast of Teahupo'o in Tahiti, French Polynesia, where the surfing events are held, is pictured in the background.
Gattoni is an illustrator and former swimmer known for his large-format works that can take months or even years to complete – spent more than 2,000 hours creating the illustrations used for the posters.
Also included in the detailed fresco are several symbols related to the games, such as the Olympic rings and the symbol of the Paralympic Games, the three agitos (Latin for “I move”)
The Paris 2024 mascots – modelled on Phrygian caps – are playfully integrated into the scene in multiple places, along with the gold-medal-shaped emblem designed for the games, which was unveiled in 2019.
The symmetrical Olympic Torch created for the games by designer Mathieu Lehanneur can be seen emerging from the water at one end of a pier. At the opposite end, a hand holds the Paris 2024 medals, which feature a real piece of the Eiffel Tower.
Tumblr media
The illustration is also available as a colouring poster. Some 40,000 characters are depicted in the posters, with an equal number of men and women in the foreground to symbolise the equality of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Princess of Wales’ Stats - Third Quarter
Due to Catherine’s health issues, we have rarely seen her this year, so this won’t be my usual format. I will, however, cover when we have seen or heard from her:
On July 6th, Catherine posted a rare personal tweet after the retirement of my secret crush British tennis legend Andy Murray at Wimbleon
On July 14th, the Princess of Wales, along with her daughter (Princess Charlotte) and sister (Pippa), attended the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Final. She then presented the trophies to the runner up (Novak Djokovic) and the winner (Carlos Alcaraz)
The following day (July 15th), William and Catherine released a photograph of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis watching the Euro Finals the night before
On August 11th, William and Catherine appeared in a video with British celebrities, sporting legends and also Snoop Dogg to celebrate the success of Team GB at the Olympics
William, Catherine and their children were spotted at the Gone Wild Festival, which ran from August 10th-11th
On August 24th, William and Catherine posted a personal good luck message to Paralympics GB on Twitter
The next day, the Wales family were seen driving to church in Balmoral
On September 9th, Kensington Palace released a video, made by Will Warr, and an accompanying statement from Catherine. The video showed Catherine and her family, while the statement confirmed the end of her chemotherapy and explained she will now continue to recover
A press story appeared on September 12th which suggested William and Catherine had watched George take his first flying lesson at the end of the summer
On September 18th, the Princess of Wales held an Early Years Meeting at Windsor Castle
On September 22nd, William and Catherine were once again spotted driving to church in Balmoral - they were enjoying a weekend in Balmoral without their children
On September 24th, the Princess of Wales held a Meeting at Windsor Castle to discuss her annual christmas concert
On September 26th, Catherine attended a matinee performance of Akram Khan’s Giselle and sent a personal tweet
This equates to three official engagements, one official video statement and four personal social media posts, as well as one photograph of the children. She was also spotted once in August and twice in September.

📸 🎥 Paralympics' official YT
The second set became a similar affair to the first set once Sam/Niels became even more dialed in. The first seed then started the game with an early break to 1-0 only to be broken back due to Niels' forehand errors (1-1), which also was continued with a fumbling of Andy/Greg's game point before Greg's wide forehand secured the Dutch pair's break point, followed by Niels' trademark backhand winner to break back again 2-1. Subsequently, even if Sam/Niels held their serves to 3-1, Andy's exquisite forehand finish minimized the gap for the British pair.
Subsequently, Sam/Niels doubled their break lead to 4-1 thanks to their clean groundstrokes, followed by a massive hold to 5-1 once a forehand error was fired too long from Andy/Greg. Niels' utilization of the angles became helpful for them to set up their one-point lead, followed by his slice finish to secure their match point. Ultimately, the Dutch pair also baked the second-set breadstick, thus securing their gold medal in the quad wheelchair doubles sector.

I have made a couple of posts in the past that refer to Barbies who are depicted as having disabilities, including the original 3 Becky dolls, the first doll in the Barbie line to be depicted using a wheelchair.
To go a little deeper on Becky, though, she was released specifically between 1997 and 1999. Her first appearance as "Share a Smile Becky" was not the only doll in the "Share a Smile" line - this line also came with Barbie and Christie, though they did not use wheelchairs.
Tumblr media
Becky was the standout of the line, both in terms of marketing and sales - Share a Smile Becky sold a reported 6000 dolls in two weeks. I don't know exactly how this stacks up in raw numbers to other Barbie line dolls but it's quite impressive.
Tumblr media
Becky's next appearance was as "I'm the School Photographer" Becky, where she is apparently an award winner for photographing the basketball team. She is depicted on the box with the Colour Streak Barbie line from the year prior, an articulated doll line with mascara-esque wands to put coloured streaks in their hair.
Tumblr media
I'm not particularly sure why they marketed School Photographer Becky in relation to the Colour Streak line, as opposed to as part of a school or even athletics related line. Or for that matter, if you're going to market a Becky in this line, why not give her a Colour Streak doll? We could have had Raucous Red or Mellow Yellow Becky.
Her third and final appearance was as Paralympic Champion Becky, released in 1999 as a prelude to the Sydney Olympic Games. The equivalent Barbie in the line was Swimming Champion Barbie, who could "swim" backstroke or freestyle in water.
Tumblr media
Teresa and Christie were also released as Swimming Champions this same year, as well as a variety of other Olympic tie-ins such as fans and, for some reason, a pin collector.
Tumblr media
I think my biggest quibble with Paralympic Champion Becky personally is that the other athlete dolls (the Swimming Champions) have a name that refers to their event, rather than the games as a whole. Perhaps Becky should have been marketed as Racer Becky or something.
Of course, the doll was designed to educate children on the Paralympic Games, but I feel they could have done a little better in that regard.
Interestingly - some articles about Becky cite there being a fourth Becky doll, one who used sign language. As far as I can tell this is a misattribution of Sign Language Barbie.
Tumblr media
Personally I find this one fascinating because, in addition to coming with instructions for some signs including the alphabet, she has a custom arm, with the hand molded in the shape of the sign for "I Love You".
Becky's other main appearance that I find notable is in the Barbie book "Three Cheers for Becky", in which Becky coaches the cheerleading squad.
Tumblr media
A lot of Becky's appearances around this time carry a hint of condescension. It appears as though Mattel was genuinely trying, but fell into some tropes of Becky as an inspirational figure with few personality traits outside of being Barbie's Friend Who Uses A Wheelchair. Some of these things could be relatively easily sidestepped by Mattel - I don't object to Becky as a Paralympian in the lead-up to an Olympic year, but why not give Becky the opportunity to have regular fashion dolls too?
Oh, and let her actually fit in the Dreamhouse. That would have been good too.
