ALLONSANFAN - (Paolo e Vittorio Taviani, 1974)

During the Restoration (1816) an aristocrat (MarcelloMastroianni) adheres to the reasons of the revolutionaries but then tries in every way to betray the cause and abandon his friends...

The rereading (from a leftist angle) of a turbulent period of Italian history (with Pisacane's failed attempt to raise the southern peasant masses against the Bourbons) serves the directors for some interesting considerations on the difficulties of a minority to organize an effective social struggle in a historical period (like that of the film - and the current one-) of revolutionary "impossibility". The result is remarkable but certain parodistic elements and an "existential" reading of history soften both the "message" and the transgressive core of the film.
