Another year, another birthday! Normally I don’t draw much attention to it, but it’s been a rough year, and I want to celebrate my surviving of it by recommending 10 works from mutuals that live in my head RENT FREE forever! Please enjoy them with me, and feel free to shout at me about them in the DM’s, it will make my day!

1. Devil’s Snare All The Way Down by @malpal132​

Pairing: Pansy Parkinson/Neville Longbottom Rating: E This is a gorgeous Pansy Parkinson character study, spanning her younger years to post-hogwarts. She becomes reacquainted with Neville Longbottom and discovers who she’s meant to be in this slow-burn ETL. 

2. Down a Hill at High Speed by @tepre​

Pairing: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy Rating: E This 8th year fic is the BEST sex-pollen trope story I’ve ever read. Period. Tepre is a genius with sexual tension. 

3. May Contain Nuts by scoradh

Pairing: Harry Potter/George Weasley Rating: M This is the fic that I REFUSE TO SHUT UP ABOUT (sorry if you’ve been caught in the crosshairs.) George is trying out a new line for XXX products at the joke shop. Harry is George’s go-to for product testing. Contains found family, dubious sweets, broken George, and NUTS of course! *Note the Archive warning for MCD is in reference to Fred, I think. No Harrys or Georges are harmed in the making of this fic. 

4. Savour by @mignon-chignon​

Pairing: Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy Rating: E This is just pure PWP. And all my favorite kinks. Definitely not safe for ANYTHING but a quiet room, a glass of your favorite beverage, and a favorite toy. Mind the tags. 

5. Like a Brother Would by @wolfpants​

Pairing: Harry Potter/Ron Weasley Rating: E This Deathly Hallows AU explores the posibility of Ron returning back to the tent that night in the Forest of Dean.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read and reread this. I’m obessed with this friends to lovers pairing, this vulnerable and delicious fic.  One of the best Ronarry I’ve ever read. 

6. The Luxury of a Regret by @swoontodeath​

Pairing: Horace Slughorn/Regulus Black, Horace Slughorn/Sirius Black Rating: E IT’S A DEAD DOVE, FOLKS! But it is so creepy and beautiful. I CANNOT stop thinking about it. Imagine if this were canon, Slughorns obession with Harry would be THAT MUCH CREEPIER. 

7. Hate, Lead the Way! by oh_black_sparrow

Pairing: Walburga Black/Orion Black Rating: E One of the Rare Pair fest 2022 stories I fell head-over-heels in love with. We know her as the shrewish shrieking portrait permanently stuck to the wall in 12 Grimmauld Place, but in this rage-filled story, she’s a force to be reckoned with. 

8. Manufacturing Consent by onefiftyeight

Pairing: Lucius Malfoy/Hermione Granger Rating: E HEAR ME OUT. I don’t normally go for this pairing, but THIS FIC is deliciously sinister. A masterclass in gaslighting and manipulation. A breeding kink extravaganza. Crack at its finest. Give it a chance, I promise you won’t regret it. Mostly. 

9. Hot and Bothered by @roseharpermaxwell​

Pairing: Ron Weasley/Draco Malfoy, background Dramione Rating: T Who’s the better kisser? Only one way to find out… (Guys. This is reason #1 why Dron is amazing. Mic Drop.)

10. I Like Your Skirt by @the-francakes​

Pairing: Ron Weasley/Harry Potter Rating: E Aside from the fact that Fran is lovely and wrote this gift for me, RON AND HARRY are SO YUMMY IN THIS!!! Dual POV, Friends to Lovers, flirting, pining and no small amount of filthy content. The epilogue chapter (bonus smut) is to die for. It will forever reside in my wank bank.

I usually don't add my commentary to someone else's personal post (please pardon me) but HOW THE FUCK DID I MISS THIS FIC FOR TWO FUCKING YEARS?! IT'S FUCKING BRILLIANT AND I'M ABSOLUTELY BLOWN THE FUCK AWAY.

Thank you so, so, so much @heyjude19-writing for shining a light on this brilliant fic by @malpal132 because it is one of the greatest hp fics I've ever read and definitely belongs in the same breath as so many other brilliant must-read works in this incredible fandom.

Why I rec this: I need more people to read this fic, because it is an absolutely perfect character study of Pansy. There's gorgeous depth to her here, and all her formative relationships make this fic such a moving read. Come for the panville, stay for pansy's gift for herbology, platonic soulmates pansy/draco, and pomona sprout.

you’re such an incredible writer, so i only imagine u read extensively too. i’ve noticed ur ao3 bookmarks are empty, but i’d love to get a list of your favorite titles whether it’s zutara, other fandom or traditionally published works.

I do indeed read a lot. The past few years I have read much less fanfic and have focused on original stuff, but I have actually been able to read a few fics in recent times because my brain didn't want to write, I did have a bit of Zutara burnout I think so no Zutara recs here (yet).

But if you, like me, enjoy some Dramione, then, for starters:

A Darker Blue by skitter (legitimately cannot believe this fic didn't blow up, one of the best Dramione fics I've read and that fandom has a ton of good shit, so like. wow. skitter also has a Zutara! I have not yet read but it's on my list and I'm already sure I will love it)

Lights Out by Phoebe

I used to read every pairing under the sun in HP but as I said, haven't read as much fic lately, but two others are Blood & Gold (a Tomione, by the legendary ObsidianPen) and The Wilderness (Luna/Ginny) by speechwriter. If you try nothing else on this list, try The Wilderness. That fic is high art. It blew my entire goddamn mind, my god. I also highly recommend anything by PacificRimbaud (esp. the Paneville)

The Liveship Trilogy by Robin Hobb altered my brain chemistry

Scholomance Trilogy by Naomi Novik. I mean, okay, I worship Naomi generally, so I was shocked to discover it took me a while to get into these. Read the first, thought 'meh', came back to it again later, liked it better, second and third proceeded to BLOW me away

NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy. In case you want a nice dose of a darker twist on Earthbending and an exploration of prejudice.

Juniper & Thorne by Ava Reid for your Gothic horror needs

Lost Boy and Alice, both by Christina Henry. Dark fairy tale retellings, so you know I'm there. She does them so well.

The Burning series by Evan Winter. It has dragons and a dual-sword wielding badass, in case you need those itches scratched

If you want some good published romance (I tend to like fanfic for pure romance stories tbh so I'm usually pickier here) that has some fanfic vibes, I enjoyed Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

If you want dark Zutara vibes, my go-to rec and one of my favorite series is The Poppy War trilogy (I will never get over #rinezha)

I wouldn't say I adore The Legendborn Cycle series, but I still like it, you can tell the author has roots in the fan/fanfic scene I think, and again, I think it has some Zutara vibes. Tracy Deonn 100% had to have been inspired by Zuko for her character Sel, I'm convinced. And her take on the Arthurian legend is really unique and creative.

question! what ever happened to soft animals? i love your writing style and a good 8th year fic with some darker themes so that story checked a lot of boxes for me, just curious to know, is all. (ps. i freaking LOVE party lines, and pps. you FEED my paneville hunger love u LOTS Xx)

I deleted my unfinished WIPs at one point when writing wasn't sparking any joy and I had a hard time imagining it would again (and given the number of people trying to post endings to other people's WIPs without asking, I'm glad I did). I don't envision any circumstances where I would finish and repost Soft Animals, but I'm grateful to be back to writing Panville for fun. Thank you! 💜💜💜

Pansy’s gaze slid from Blaise to Neville. Watching as he pulled out small vials collecting grass and dirt for whatever reason, “Fine. Give me the stupid candy.”

Just because Draco lived in the Muggle world now, didn't mean that he had cut off ties with the Wizarding World completely—he didn't think he would be able to do that if he tried, given it was all he had known growing up—so maybe there were a few spells that he used to help him around the shop that gave him an edge compared to other flower and plant boutiques, and he and Neville Longbottom actually talked at length and shared a lot of tips when it came to Herbology.

Snarling, she pushed herself away from the wall and descended the stairs. It kept the olfactory association limited to her work, rather than blurring the lines between the two and making her sick of the overpowering florals. Charlie opened the door and Angelina’s hand squeezed his as a gasp left her lips. She stood in the entryway as her eyes roamed over the displays of florals and colors. She had never seen so many florals in such a small space. There were intricately made bouquets displayed as well as buckets of individual flowers sorted by type and color. She wasn’t familiar with too many muggle flowers, though he didn’t need to know that, and Herbology was never her best subject, but she couldn’t help but be in awe at the beauty surrounding every corner of the shop. He turned and looked at her, blushing at the bright smile on her face.

Rarepair Rec Saturday

Hothouse by CreepingMyrtle (T, 5.5k, Pansy/Neville) Pansy Parkinson is the best of the best at a groundbreaking PR agency. Ginny Weasley is unfortunately the best designer she’s ever worked with. Neville Longbottom is Ginny’s roommate, and he is terribly, awfully, unacceptably sexy. I am endlessly charmed by the character work in this fic. I can't get over how much I love Ginny and her endless meddling and Pansy and her restraint and Neville and his unassuming hotness. I also can't get over the fact it was written by one of my friends as a first fic, and deserves all the shine.

Neville moved so that he rested all of his weight on the wall with one shoulder, now facing her fully He leaned a bit closer, so close that she could feel his breath against her face. She ignored the hint of alcohol that most likely matched her breath as well. Pansy kept her eyes on his tie as she was too afraid to meet his gaze and see what she might find. 

“Pansy,” he spoke softly. She shivered at the way his voice curved around her name. He treated the two syllables with care. 

“Neville,” she said, and her voice was so low she wasn’t even sure she said anything at all.

Pansy’s going through a lot of shit. Her father’s gone, her mother is incredibly intolerable, she has a job she hates at The Daily Prophet, she’s not popular among her former Hogwarts classmates, and she’s stupidly in love with a boy who is too good and nice to her even though she used to make fun of him at school.

She’s also not coping well. But it’s all fine
