Another year, another birthday! Normally I don’t draw much attention to it, but it’s been a rough year, and I want to celebrate my surviving of it by recommending 10 works from mutuals that live in my head RENT FREE forever! Please enjoy them with me, and feel free to shout at me about them in the DM’s, it will make my day!

1. Devil’s Snare All The Way Down by @malpal132​

Pairing: Pansy Parkinson/Neville Longbottom Rating: E This is a gorgeous Pansy Parkinson character study, spanning her younger years to post-hogwarts. She becomes reacquainted with Neville Longbottom and discovers who she’s meant to be in this slow-burn ETL. 

2. Down a Hill at High Speed by @tepre​

Pairing: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy Rating: E This 8th year fic is the BEST sex-pollen trope story I’ve ever read. Period. Tepre is a genius with sexual tension. 

3. May Contain Nuts by scoradh

Pairing: Harry Potter/George Weasley Rating: M This is the fic that I REFUSE TO SHUT UP ABOUT (sorry if you’ve been caught in the crosshairs.) George is trying out a new line for XXX products at the joke shop. Harry is George’s go-to for product testing. Contains found family, dubious sweets, broken George, and NUTS of course! *Note the Archive warning for MCD is in reference to Fred, I think. No Harrys or Georges are harmed in the making of this fic. 

4. Savour by @mignon-chignon​

Pairing: Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy Rating: E This is just pure PWP. And all my favorite kinks. Definitely not safe for ANYTHING but a quiet room, a glass of your favorite beverage, and a favorite toy. Mind the tags. 

5. Like a Brother Would by @wolfpants​

Pairing: Harry Potter/Ron Weasley Rating: E This Deathly Hallows AU explores the posibility of Ron returning back to the tent that night in the Forest of Dean.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read and reread this. I’m obessed with this friends to lovers pairing, this vulnerable and delicious fic.  One of the best Ronarry I’ve ever read. 

6. The Luxury of a Regret by @swoontodeath​

Pairing: Horace Slughorn/Regulus Black, Horace Slughorn/Sirius Black Rating: E IT’S A DEAD DOVE, FOLKS! But it is so creepy and beautiful. I CANNOT stop thinking about it. Imagine if this were canon, Slughorns obession with Harry would be THAT MUCH CREEPIER. 

7. Hate, Lead the Way! by oh_black_sparrow

Pairing: Walburga Black/Orion Black Rating: E One of the Rare Pair fest 2022 stories I fell head-over-heels in love with. We know her as the shrewish shrieking portrait permanently stuck to the wall in 12 Grimmauld Place, but in this rage-filled story, she’s a force to be reckoned with. 

8. Manufacturing Consent by onefiftyeight

Pairing: Lucius Malfoy/Hermione Granger Rating: E HEAR ME OUT. I don’t normally go for this pairing, but THIS FIC is deliciously sinister. A masterclass in gaslighting and manipulation. A breeding kink extravaganza. Crack at its finest. Give it a chance, I promise you won’t regret it. Mostly. 

9. Hot and Bothered by @roseharpermaxwell​

Pairing: Ron Weasley/Draco Malfoy, background Dramione Rating: T Who’s the better kisser? Only one way to find out… (Guys. This is reason #1 why Dron is amazing. Mic Drop.)

10. I Like Your Skirt by @the-francakes​

Pairing: Ron Weasley/Harry Potter Rating: E Aside from the fact that Fran is lovely and wrote this gift for me, RON AND HARRY are SO YUMMY IN THIS!!! Dual POV, Friends to Lovers, flirting, pining and no small amount of filthy content. The epilogue chapter (bonus smut) is to die for. It will forever reside in my wank bank.

Thank you so much! I've not been in the Panville headspace for a while but there was an odd pick up in comments on the Mealtime Collective as of late and so now I'm jumping back in as a reader and remembering why I love this ship so much.

I have been absent from the fandom for the last 12-18 months. I've scrolled Facebook from time to time, commented here and there. But for the most part, I've been checked out.

I've been battling alot in my personal life, but won't delve into that. In fact, I almost didn't make this post as one of my many many concurrent inner monologues likes to stress about if this will be perceived as vague posting and attention seeking, when that's the furthest from the truth.

I want to return to fandom. But most of all I want to return to writing. I miss having the energy and emotional capacity to string words together. So this is both an apology to those so patiently following my WIP, as well as an accountability post of sorts.

I cannot afford to throw myself headfirst into writing again, I need moderation or I will quickly burnout and extinguish the little spark that has only recently rekindled. But I do want to begin again.

My first step for re-engaging with fandom is going to be addressing and responding to each of the 102 amazing comments that have been left on my AO3 throughout my absence. These messages have brought me so much joy and motivation, but also guilt. To allow myself to write again I feel I need to work my way through these beautiful comments and show them the gratitude they deserve.

Then I plan on picking one of the two oneshots I started more than a year ago. They both have potential as an easy re-entry into writing, but I'm still undecided about which to choose first.

Option 1 is an 8th year hurt/comfort Panville oneshot that ends with loving, more emotional smut, though it has alot of trauma addressed throughout the fic and significantly more plot substance than option 2. I have 812 words written on this one so far and another 1722 of fairly fleshed out outline. This option is more progressed, though likely also more emotionally taxing for me to write currently.

Option 2 is my unfinished work for the 2023 Call Me Daddy fest. It is essentially gratuitous Billmione smut with a large serving of Ron bashing 😅 This would likely be less taxing to write, but in contrast to the Panville, only has 244 words down (which I honestly feel need work) and a basic outline of an additional 250 words.

I also desperately want to resume my Dramione WIP, Finding You In Solitude, but am at a heavy plot junction and don't feel I am capable of delivering that chapters content to the best of my ability with where I am currently. So I want to finish one or both of these oneshots before seriously working on my WIP again.

Anyway, if you've made it this far you're amazing and you should help me decide what to write first ☺️

Pansy was reformed. She’d left all of that pureblood nonsense in the past. She’d never really bought into it anyway. But with the way Professor Longbottom avoided her and couldn’t make eye contact when they were forced to speak, you’d think she was the head of the Death Eater squad.

It rankled her to no end. So, she decided she was going to find ways to bother him right back. She was going to get him so good.

She strode into Greenhouse 3, and the heads of the students whipped around to face her. She ignored them all, striding right up to Professor Longbottom right as he was mid-lecture and tossed a pile of textbooks at his feet.

“Your 3rd-period Herbology students came into my class covered in dirt and these textbooks are now filthy. Clean them and teach your students how to cast a proper Scourgify while you're at it.”

His eyes were wide with surprise for a moment but he schooled his expression quickly. “Thank you for joining us Professor Parkinson,” he spoke calmly. She hated how he made it sound like he’d invited her to be there. He was supposed to be flustered, embarrassed. “We are working with Asphodel today. Can anyone tell our esteemed Potions Master what part of the plant is used in potion making?”

Electra, a small curly-haired blonde from Hufflepuff raised her hand. “We use the roots, in their powdered form.”

Neville nodded and smiled at the girl. “Very good Ms. Reyes. 10 points to Hufflepuff.”

“Now can anyone tell Professor Parkinson what potions we cultivate Asphodel for?”

Pansy tapped her foot, trying her best to keep her cool. “I am perfectly aware of the uses of Asphodel roots in potion making, Longbottom. I just need my books cleaned. The dirt can get into the potions and ruin them. I have other things to do during my planning period. Good day.”

“Of course, Professor. Thank you for joining us.”

Pansy was furious. The first time that man decided not to cower in her presence, and it had ruined her plan.

you’re such an incredible writer, so i only imagine u read extensively too. i’ve noticed ur ao3 bookmarks are empty, but i’d love to get a list of your favorite titles whether it’s zutara, other fandom or traditionally published works.

I do indeed read a lot. The past few years I have read much less fanfic and have focused on original stuff, but I have actually been able to read a few fics in recent times because my brain didn't want to write, I did have a bit of Zutara burnout I think so no Zutara recs here (yet).

But if you, like me, enjoy some Dramione, then, for starters:

anything by phlox (Slowly Toward Desire is my favorite)

Amateur Cartography by worksofstone

A Darker Blue by skitter (legitimately cannot believe this fic didn't blow up, one of the best Dramione fics I've read and that fandom has a ton of good shit, so like. wow. skitter also has a Zutara! I have not yet read but it's on my list and I'm already sure I will love it)

Lights Out by Phoebe

I used to read every pairing under the sun in HP but as I said, haven't read as much fic lately, but two others are Blood & Gold (a Tomione, by the legendary ObsidianPen) and The Wilderness (Luna/Ginny) by speechwriter. If you try nothing else on this list, try The Wilderness. That fic is high art. It blew my entire goddamn mind, my god. I also highly recommend anything by PacificRimbaud (esp. the Paneville)

The Liveship Trilogy by Robin Hobb altered my brain chemistry

Scholomance Trilogy by Naomi Novik. I mean, okay, I worship Naomi generally, so I was shocked to discover it took me a while to get into these. Read the first, thought 'meh', came back to it again later, liked it better, second and third proceeded to BLOW me away

NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy. In case you want a nice dose of a darker twist on Earthbending and an exploration of prejudice.

Juniper & Thorne by Ava Reid for your Gothic horror needs

Lost Boy and Alice, both by Christina Henry. Dark fairy tale retellings, so you know I'm there. She does them so well.

The Burning series by Evan Winter. It has dragons and a dual-sword wielding badass, in case you need those itches scratched

If you want some good published romance (I tend to like fanfic for pure romance stories tbh so I'm usually pickier here) that has some fanfic vibes, I enjoyed Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

If you want dark Zutara vibes, my go-to rec and one of my favorite series is The Poppy War trilogy (I will never get over #rinezha)

I wouldn't say I adore The Legendborn Cycle series, but I still like it, you can tell the author has roots in the fan/fanfic scene I think, and again, I think it has some Zutara vibes. Tracy Deonn 100% had to have been inspired by Zuko for her character Sel, I'm convinced. And her take on the Arthurian legend is really unique and creative.
