The Indian solar energy industry is full of potential and is poised for a long and sustainable growth. The industry has been on growth track internationally in many countries but in India it has now gained critical significance. The announcement of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) in 2009 and its subsequent launch in January 2010 by the Government of India highlights its importance to the nation. India heavy reliance on coal for off grid solar freezer its energy needs, regular shortages in its supply, quality problems and its limited resources; criticality of electricity for the manufacturing industry, regular electricity shortages faced by industries across India, & rising electricity costs and thus rising manufacturing input costs; and millions in India living without electricity. These are some of the factors that point towards the need of an alternative and efficient energy source and underline the launch of JNNSM.

Solar energy is needed by, and would serve the industries and consumers in general alike. The launch of JNNSM project has given a real boost to solar energy production in India. JNNSM targets of producing 20 GW of solar energy by the year 2022. India has been manufacturing solar cells and modules for a long time, however, the focus had been on exports, with majority of solar equipment being exported to Europe and other countries including Japan. The domestic solar energy production was almost negligible till the launch of the project in India. By the end of fiscal year 2009-10 the solar installed capacity in India was just 10.3 MW. It went to 35.15 MW by the end of FY 2010-11 which increased exponentially to 941.24 MW for FY 2011-12. Along with this capacity rise the project launch also shifted the focus of both domestic as well international manufacturers towards India.

The first phase of JNNSM saw solar power producers in India using imported solar equipment on a large scale, along with some domestic sourcing. The second phase of the project, which was just launched, would shift the sourcing focus to domestic suppliers as JNNSM is expected to expand its domestic solar cell sourcing clause to include thin film solar panels. More and more exhibitions and conferences are being held in the Indian solar industry to help it grow. The North India Solar Summit (NISS) was held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in March 2014 aimed at filling the awareness gap about solar power. This was the first summit organized by the Indian Industries Association which was about North India solar industry and was very well attended. It focused on two objectives: One, to provide information to investors interested in setting up solar power plants and, second, provide information on manufacturing of equipment for solar power generation.

Rejecting the plea seeking direction to the Centre on transportation of migrant workers stuck in various states due to the nationwide lockdown, the Supreme Court observed that it was impossible for courts to track or stop the movement.

The plea sought a direction to the Centre to ask all District Magistrates to identify stranded migrant walking on the roads and provide shelter and food to them before ensuring their free transportation to native places.

"How can we stop it?", the bench, headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao, said that it is up to states to take action.

Of the 45 new coronavirus cases in Karnataka, 16 were reported in Dakshina Kannada, 13 in Bengaluru Urban, five in Udapi, three each in Bidar and Hassan, two in Chitradurga, and one each in Kolar, Shivamogga and Bagalkote districts.

Suggestions sent to Centre on resumption of public transport in Delhi during lockdown 4: Satyendar Jain

Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Friday said that the Delhi government has submitted the proposals to the Centre for the relaxations that people are expecting from the government for the next phase of coronavirus lockdown 4.

The Minister emphasized that people are stressing for the resumption of public transportation in limited manner.

"We have sent proposals to the Centre. Most people have given a proposal to wear mask in public space and maintain social distancing," said Jain while speaking to reporters.

He added: "The people have suggested that movement of buses and metro rails may be started in limited numbers to maintain social distancing."

"His name was Rampukar — but he didn't tell me that. I only found out a few days later in a newspaper report. At the time, I couldn't even ask him his name," recalls Press Trust of India's chief photo correspondent Atul Yadav, "He was unable to say very much beyond 'udhar (there)' — which is where he was trying to go."

On Monday, Yadav was driving through Delhi's Nizamuddin area, when he spotted Rampukar Pandit (as identified by Hindi daily Hindustan). "It was at around 5.15 pm when I saw him sitting by the side of the road a little before the Yamuna bridge. I stopped my car and pulled over near him," he tells Firstpost, adding, "I then rolled down my window and photographed the man before getting out to go and check on him."

Amid reports of accidents involving migrant labourers on their way back home, the opposition Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party expressed concern over their plight.

Badrinath temple opens, devotees restricted to enter

Maharashtra set to extend lockdown till end of May, will send report to this effect to Centre today

The Maharashtra government has called for an extension of lockdown in the State till 31 May, and is likely to send a report to this effect to the Centre by Friday.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting with State Cabinet ministers to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the state and the measures needed to be implemented to contain the fast-spreading virus.

According to a senior minister, a consensus was reached on that the lockdown has to be extended in certain parts of the State, especially in red zones such as the Mumbai and Pune metropolitan regions, Malegaon and Solapur.

The Hindu quoted the minister as saying, "It was also agreed upon that the lockdown from now on has to be strictly implemented in red zones, especially in containment areas. At the same time, further relaxations could be given in orange and green zones," adding that the recommendation will be sent to the Centre on Friday.

Flight attendants to wear face shield, gown and mask when airlines resume ops

Cabin crew members of Indian airlines will have personal protective equipment (PPE) like face shields, gowns and masks as part of their attire on commercial passenger flights when they resume operations, industry sources said.

Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, Vistara and AirAsia India have decided to go with the new attire in order to ensure safety of cabin crew members as they are in close proximity to passengers during flights, the sources said.

"While AirAsia India will have face shields, masks, gowns, aprons and gloves as a part of their PPE attire for cabin crew members, Vistara would have a lap gown, face mask and face shield as the new dress code," a source said.

The government on Thursday announced a Rs 3.16 lakh crore package of free foodgrains for migrant workers, concessional credit to farmers and working capital loan for street vendors as part of the second tranche of fiscal stimulus to heal an economy hit hard by coronavirus lockdown.

At a news conference, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said 8 crore migrant workers will get 5 kgs of grains and 1 kg of pulses free for two months, while 50 lakh street vendors rendered jobless by the lockdown would be given a working capital loan of Rs 10,000 each.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 disease rose to 2,549 and the number of cases climbed to 78,003 on Thursday, registering an increase of 134 fatalities and 3,722 infections in the last 24 hours since Wednesday 8 am, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 49,219 while 26,234 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, it said.

Meanwhile, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the media for the second day in a row, and spelt out more details of the Centre's Rs 20-lakh-crore special economic package. She said the second tranche of economic stimulus package will be for the benefit of migrant workers, street vendors and small farmers.

FM announces concessional credit for farmers, free food grains for migrants

Sitharaman on Thursday announced a Rs 3.16 lakh crore package comprising free food grains for migrant workers, Rs 2 lakh crore concessional credit to small farmers and working capital loan for street vendors in a bid to help those hit hard by the nationwide lockdown.

Together with the Wednesday's Rs 5.94 lakh crore package that mostly comprised off-budget credit line and support to small businesses, shadow banks and electricity distribution companies, the government has unveiled over Rs 9 lakh crore plans out of the Rs 20 lakh crore package announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to heal Asia's third-largest economy that was seen hurtling towards its first full-year contraction in four decades.

Sitharaman said each of the eight crore migrant workers, who had to leave their workplaces after imposition of the lockdown on 25 March, will get 5 kg grains and 1 kg pulses free for two months.

Also, 50 lakh street vendors who were rendered jobless as the government ordered stay-at-home would be given a working capital loan of Rs 10,000 each to restart their businesses.

For farmers, the finance minister announced a Rs 2 lakh crore concessional credit through Kisan Credits Cards, benefiting as many as 2.5 crore farmers.

However, the Congress criticised the economic package as a "jumla" saying it has so far been way short of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised and the entire press conference of the finance minister was classic display of "arrogance, ignorance and insensitivity".

Senior spokesperson of the party Anand Sharma said the country believed that Modi was serious when he made the "dramatic" announcement of giving 10 percent of the GDP as a package to revive the economy and support workers and migrant labourers and that expectations had soared.

"The finance minister's announcement dashed all hopes," he said.

State-wise deaths and cases

India has reported a total 134 deaths deaths since Wednesday morning, of which 54 were in Maharashtra, 29 in Gujarat, 20 in Delhi, 9 in West Bengal, seven in Madhya Pradesh, four in Rajasthan, three in Tamil Nadu, two each in Telangana and Karnataka and one each in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.

Of the 2,549 fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 975 fatalities, Gujarat comes second with 566 deaths, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 232, West Bengal at 207, Rajasthan at 121, Delhi at 106, Uttar Pradesh at 83, Tamil Nadu at 64 and Andhra Pradesh at 47.

The toll reached 34 in Telangana, 33 in Karnataka and 32 in Punjab on Thursday. Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir have reported 11 fatalities each due to the respiratory disease while Bihar has registered seven and Kerala has reported four deaths.

Jharkhand, Chandigarh and Odisha have recorded three COVID-19 fatalities each while Himachal Pradesh and Assam have reported two deaths each. Meghalaya, Uttarakhand and Puducherry have reported one fatality each, according to the ministry data.

According to the ministry's website, more than 70 percent of the deaths are due to comorbidities.

According to the health ministry data updated in the morning, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country is from Maharashtra at 25,922, followed by Gujarat at 9,267, Tamil Nadu at 9,227, Delhi at 7,998, Rajasthan at 4,328, Madhya Pradesh at 4,173 and Uttar Pradesh at 3,729.

The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 2,290 in West Bengal, 2,137 in Andhra Pradesh and 1,924 in Punjab. It has risen to 1,367 in Telangana, 971 in Jammu and Kashmir, 959 in Karnataka, 940 in Bihar and 793 in Haryana.

Kerala has reported 534 coronavirus cases so far, while Odisha has 538 cases. A total of 187 people have been infected with the virus in Chandigarh and 173 in Jharkhand.

Tripura has reported 155 cases, Assam has 80 cases, Uttarakhand has 72, Himachal Pradesh has 66 cases, Chhattisgarh has 59 and Ladakh has registered 43 cases so far.

Thirty-three COVID-19 cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Meghalaya and Puducherry have registered 13 cases each while Goa has seven COVID-19 cases.

Manipur has two cases. Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have reported a case each till now.

Doubling time has slowed to 13.9 days, says health minister

The doubling time of novel coronavirus cases has slowed to 13.9 days in the last three days and India now has a capacity of 1,00,000 COVID-19 tests per day with nearly 20 lakh carried out till now, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said.

Vardhan, who visited the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Delhi and dedicated a COBAS 6800 testing machine to the nation, said 14 states and Union territories have not reported any case of the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

These states and UTs are Gujarat, Telangana, Jharkhand, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Puducherry.

Also, Daman and Diu, Sikkim, Nagaland and Lakshadweep have not reported any cases so far.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to use one time RT-PCR based pooled sampling for COVID-19 screening of migrant workers and returnees from abroad kept in quarantine facilities.

The same testing technique would also be used for monitoring in green zone districts which have reported no cases till now or in the last 21 days, the health ministry said while issuing "Guidelines for RT-PCR based pooled sampling for migrants/returnees from abroad/green zones".

806 shramik special trains brought into operation till now, says Railways

The Railways has operated 806 shramik special trains since 1 May, ferrying home 10 lakh migrant workers who were stranded in various parts of the country due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown, officials said on Thursday. Of these, Uttar Pradesh received the maximum number of trains followed by Bihar, they said.

"As on 14 May, 2020, a total of 806 'shramik special' trains have been operationalised from various states across the country. More than 10 lakh passengers have reached their home state.

"Trains are being run by the Railways only after concurrence is given both by the state which is sending the passengers and the state which is receiving them," the railways said.

Out of the 806 trains which have been operated so far, 166 are in transit while 640 have terminated at various stations. Sixty-three more are in the pipeline, an official said.

China's mobile and digital dominance run deep into Indian economy

Sometime in 2019, India overtook the US to become the second largest smartphone market in the world, after China. Of the 158 million units shipped (meaning made available in the Indian market), around 114 million, or 72%, were Chinese brands, said Counterpoint Research. Xiaomi led the pack, with Vivo, Realme and Oppo figuring among the top five, according to figures released in January. It’s been an astounding market share grab, considering most of these brands have not been in India for more than a few years.

Chinese companies are now major players in a number of consumer segments. Lenovo is a heavyweight in computer hardware, Haier is inching up the league table in white goods. Huawei’s domination in telecom equipment is strong and its leadership in 5G technology, in particular, is absolute. In auto, 2019 saw a blockbuster entry for MG Motor, with its Hector SUV. A number of major Chinese automakers are now rolling into India.

Chinese companies are beginning to dominate in some digital segments as well. ByteDance-owned TikTok is a sensation in India. ByteDance plans to invest $1 billion in India over the next few years. Alibaba owned UC Browser, too, has significant users in India. Hangzhou-headquartered ecommerce player Club Factory is expanding its reach to tier-2, -3 and smaller cities in India. Investors such as Ant Financials and WeChat owner Tencent have picked up stakes in large digital players such as Paytm and Zomato. PUBG, one of India’s most popular mobile games, is owned by Tencent.

This is just the picture on the consumer-facing business. In business-to-business supplies, China is perhaps the most important trading partner for Indian businesses today.

The emerging picture is rather remarkable, considering the geopolitical unease that exists between India and China. The robust $87 billion in trade between the two countries sit sill at ease with a history of aggressive border disputes, memories of a war and China’s open support for Pakistan, including in international fora. In fact, at various points, India has asked its military personnel to refrain from using Chinese devices or apps, or both. Now Chinese companies are everywhere — from telecom infrastructure to handheld devices and the most popular apps. Perhaps nowhere in the world do two countries with such geopolitical suspicions on the one hand also share such deep trade links on the other.

Thinking Global Globally, as in India, China has managed a remarkable turnaround in perceptions — from a supplier of cheap and poor-quality products, its companies have won the world’s grudging respect. This has been achieved through strategic intent and global acquisitions.

For instance, Lenovo was only a big player in China before it bought IBM’s hardware business and emerged among the largest computer sellers globally. British brand MG Motor and Scandinavian Volvo are among the marquee brands that have been acquired by Chinese companies.

Much of China’s global scale and success in commerce goes back to the 1990s when free trade agreements resulted in zero-to-low tariffs, and China focused on becoming the lowest cost producer and invited American and European companies to set up their manufacturing capabilities.

“China makes inferior to good products across segments to cater to different price points and needs. So from cheap plastic toys, festive lights and wristwatch dials to computers, smartphones and solar panels, Chinese companies play across segments,” says Hitesh Sawhney, partner and leader of the China business group at PwC India.

Commoditisation at Scale Chinese domination in tech products has been fuelled by its ability to commoditise at scale. China produces at scale and becomes the cheapest supplier of a particular commodity — be it phone cases, batteries, electronic components or solar panels. Nokia, for instance, used to be a dominant maker of mobile handsets. It used proprietary technology. Later with cheap chip sets from China and Taiwan, as well as customisable Android operating system, the entire ecosystem became commoditised. The same process has been replicated in computers, washing machines, air conditioners, microwaves and other products.

Chinese industries also enjoy active state support. If the US imposes tariffs, the government ensures that industry can tweak supply chains to reduce costs and remain competitive.

“China as a country approaches commerce with strategic intent. In their planning and economic thinking, it’s about how do we maximise value addition. That means higher GDP and more jobs,” says George Paul, CEO, Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT).

Even in areas where Chinese companies don’t have advantages of scale, they are willing to invest to create the market. For instance, ecommerce in India seems like a two-horse race between Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart. That has not deterred Chinese ecommerce player Club Factory from investing. In recent months, it has increased its penetration in smaller towns in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Bihar and offers sops to onboard sellers. “Local talent is key to our success. We are hiring local employees and also scaling up operations to connect with the masses,” says Vincent Lou, founder and CEO of Club Factory.

Carpet Bombing In smartphones, after Nokia lost ground, Indian companies, including Micromax, Lava and Karbonn, stole a march, but they could not innovate or invest in R&D. Later, Chinese companies, including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Realme, stole their thunder. Anshika Jain, research analyst, Counterpoint Research, says: “Chinese companies launch devices across price points; others hold on to their sweet spot.” Realme has 14 products in the market. Even carmakers such as SAIC and Great Wall Motors plan to bank on a portfolio of multiple products at different price points to attract buyers. “They will replicate their success in smartphones in the car market,” says Paul.

Besides Chinese companies take a 360-degree view and study what drives local sentiments. Vivo is a major cricket sponsor. OnePlus expanded by word of mouth. They also innovate relentlessly. Triple and quad cameras are now available in sub-Rs 20,000 devices from Chinese brands.

Eric Braganza, president, Haier Appliances India, points out that the Chinese strategy is to break up an organisation into micro enterprises — say, create 40 branches of one organisation, each with qualitative and quantitative targets. And then scale up all of them.

The large ecosystem also supports growth, like easy access to capital. “Chinese advantage is product financing,” says Rajan S Mathews, director general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). He adds, “In India it’s absolutely critical. Local manufacturers don’t get it as banks in India are not keen.” Once Chinese win markets, they don’t increase prices (like in smartphones, computers etc). They are happy holding on to their volumes as they know if they increase prices, someone with a cheaper offering could upset their equation.

As investors, Chinese have begun to show aggression in India in the last couple of years. While Alibaba’s Ant Financial has been investing in India for a while, rival tech superpower Tencent has got more active recently, closing 10 deals in the last eight months alone. It has invested in edtech startup Doubtnut, Byju’s, insurance aggregator PolicyBazaar and B2B ecommerce portal Udaan, besides Swiggy, MXPlayer (owned by Times Group, publisher of this newspaper), My-Gate, Dream11 and others. Globally, Tencent has invested in 800 companies, of which 70 are publicly traded and around 150 are unicorns.

Now with labour costs rising in China (labour is now relatively cheaper in India), a large domestic market and availability of skilled talent should help Indian companies start competing better.

Attempts being made through ‘external linkages’ to ‘revive’ insurgency in Punjab: Army chief Rawat

Attempts are being made through “external linkages” to “revive insurgency” in Punjab and if early action is not taken, it will be too late, Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat Saturday said. He was addressing a gathering of senior Army officers, defence experts and former senior officials of government and police at a seminar here on ‘Changing Contours of Internal Security in India: Trends and Responses’. Rawat also said that attempts were being made again through “external linkages” and “external abetment” to revive insurgency in Assam. “Punjab has been peaceful but because of these external linkages, attempts again are being made to revive insurgency in the state,” he said, adding, “we have to be very careful.” “Let us not think that Punjab (situation) is over. We cannot close our eyes to what is happening in Punjab. And, if we do not take early action now, it will be too late,” he said. Punjab saw one of the worst phases of insurgencies in the 1980s during the pro-Khalistan movement which was eventually quelled by the government. Former Uttar Pradesh DGP Prakash Singh in a panel discussion also highlighted the issue and said “attempts were being to revive insurgency” in Punjab. He referred to a pro-Khalistan rally organised recently in the UK aiming for a ‘Referendum 2020’. Hundreds of people had turned out at Trafalgar Square in London on August 12 in support of a pro-Khalistan rally as well as to counter the event with an Independence Day celebrations. Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) had said its rally was intended to raise awareness for a non-binding referendum in 2020, calling for Punjab to be granted independence. The “We Stand With India” and “Love My India” events were organised by Indian diaspora groups as a reaction to the pro-Khalistan “London Declaration for a Referendum 2020”. Internal security is one of the biggest problems in the country, but question is “why we have not been able to find a solution, because it has external linkages,” Gen Rawat said. The event was organised by defence think-tank CLAWS (Centre for Land and Warfare Studies). Rawat is its patron. Asserting that insurgency cannot be dealt with military force, he pitched for adopting an approach in which all agencies, the government, civil administration, military and police work in an “integrated manner”. “The resolution of Naga insurgency can be forerunner to the Manipur insurgency situation. There are some linkages between the two. But, if that resolution does not satisfy Manipuris then the insurgency in that state will take a different turn, Rawat said. As far as Assam is concerned, attempts are again being made, through “external linkages” to revive insurgency in the state, he said. And, also through external abetment, and acknowledged once even by the “northern neighbour”. So, there is no denying the fact that there are these factors, Rawat added. Tradition of stones

Marble

Marble was used for building tombs, temples, and palaces. For a time it was considered as Royal Stone. It is, however, now used in hotels and homes too. There are many varieties.

Makrana: Makrana is the source of the marble used in the Taj Mahal. It is situated at a distance of 60 km from Kishangarh and falls in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan. The region has various mining ranges, mainly Doongri, Devi, Ulodi, Saabwali, Gulabi, Kumari, Neharkhan, Matabhar, Matabhar kumari, Chuck doongri, Chosira and Pahar Kua amongst others.

Rajnagar Marble: the World’s largest marble-producing area, with over 2,000 gang saw units located in the nearby town of Udaipur to process the material produced. Agaria is a variety of this area, with numerous other varieties and patterns, primarily in white base. The marble is dolomitic and often has quartz intrusions.

Andhi Marble: Located near the capital city of the state of Jaipur ‘ it is dolomitic marble with intrusions of tremolite, and is commonly known by the name of pista pistachio marble, because of the green-colored tremolite against an off-white background. One of the famous varieties of this area was known as Indo-Italian, owing to its resemblance with Statuario Marble. Most of the mining of this famous field is now banned by the Supreme Court of India because of the vicinity of the area to the Sarika Tiger Reserve.

BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP

Slumber Marble: Also known as Onyx Marble, it has thick bands of green and pink hint. A resemblance to Onyx Marble from Pakistan gives it this name. This is also highly dolomitic.

Yellow Marble: Jaisalmer stone is found in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. Though not been metamorphosed and hence is still a limestone, it is known as Yellow Marble in trade circles. It is mined in the Jaisalmer District.

Bidasar: These are ultra-basic rocks in shades of brown and green color found in Rajasthan. The criss-cross linear pattern gave it a remarkable resemblance to a photograph of dense forest. These are also known as forest green/brown or fancy green/brown.

Gujarat – Amba Ji White Marble: It can be compared with Makrana Marble. It is highly calcic and is produced in a town called Amba Ji famous for its temple of Durga Devi. The marble has a very soft and waxy look and is often used by sculptors.

Rajasthan – Abu Black: This is one of the rare Black textured marble available. Only produced in the mines of Abu road, this black textured stone is a decorative marble used in temples and sculptures.

Madhya Pradesh – Katni Range: It is famous for its beige colored marble which is dolomitic but highly crystalline, with very fine grain size and some quartz intrusions. The marble accepts polish. Another variety of the same range is red maroon-colored marble.

Jabalpur range’ contains white dolomitic marble. It is more often used as dolomite lumps for chemical and industrial uses.

Indian Green Marble: It is found in Rajasthan India, Indian Green Marble’s most quarries are situated in Kesariyaji it is 65 km far from Udaipur Rajasthan India. This Indian green marble is known by name in all over the world. In Europe, people know Indian green marble as a Verde Guatemala. Many varieties are available in Indian green marble. Indian Green Marble is exported to Africa, Europe, Australia, Middle East, and many Asian countries. It is found in the Rishabhdeo town of Udaipur District state Rajasthan of India.

Granite

India has varieties of granite in over 300 shades. As of 2019, Granite reserves in India were 48500 million cubic meters and ranked fifth in the export of the processed product. Resources are found in Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh.

Sandstone

India is among the leading countries when it comes to mining and export of sandstone. The best part with Sandstone from India is that it is available in different colors and considered best for interior as well as exterior use. Few most popular sandstone products from India include names like Tint Mint, White Mint, Mint Fossils, Modak, Agra Red, Rainbow Sandstone, Raj Green, Teak, Buff Brown, Dholpur Chocolate, Beige, Dholpur Pink, Lalitpur Pink, Mandana Red, Jodhpur pink, Jodhpur red, Jaisalmer yellow, etc.

These sandstones are available in several finishes and come with great strength. However, Sandstone like Rainbow is only available in layered form and so is not suitable when the good thickness is required and Jodhpur sandstone is best when used in front elevation and high comprehensive strength. To illustrate it clearly, you can’t have cobbles out of Rainbow sandstone in particular as it is usually available in the slabs form.

Slate

Slate reserves in India are found in Rajasthan, Behror, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Deposits in Rajasthan are spread over the districts of Alwar, Ajmer, Bharatpur, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Pali, Udaipur, Churu, and Chittorgarh. Few important names in slate are Jak Black, Silver Shine, Silver grey, Panther, Deoli Green, Peacock, Peacock Multi, Kund Black, Kund Multi, and so on. Being to some extent fragile in nature, it is good for interior use only and can be used even as washboards.

Flaggy limestone

Kota stone of Kota district and Yellow Limestone of Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan are the prime limestone occurrences in India. Other deposits include the Shahabad Stone of Gulbarga and the Belgaum districts of Karnataka, Kadappa Stone of Kadapa, Kurnool, and the Anantapur & Guntur districts of Andhra Pradesh, Milliolitic. Limestone from Saurashtra Region, Gujarat, and Yellow Limestone of Kutch district of Gujarat, amongst others.

Limestone deposits

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana put together possess 32% of the country’s total reserves of limestone. World-renowned Narzi limestone is available in the Kadapa district. Commercial grade limestone deposits are being exploited from Bethamcherla, Macherla, Neereducherla, Tandur, shahabad, Mudimanikyam of Kurnool, Guntur, Anantapur, Rangareddy, and Nalgonda districts are widely used in our country for paneling and flooring purposes. Sullivan limestone of Karminagar and Warangaldistricts, massive limestones of Mudimanikyam, Nalgonda districts.

Total India’s limestones are estimated at 1 lakh million tones. Limestones are extensively utilized for the manufacturing of cement and also building stones, particularly flooring and roofing.

Other dimensional stones

Some other dimensional stones are being quarried and used in consumption, in addition to the dimensional stones already detailed above. Lateritebricks are quarried in huge quantities and are utilized as bricks in the construction of houses and for pavements in the states of Orissa, Karnataka, Goa, and other parts of coastal states. The felspathic sandstone occurring with the coal seams as overburden is also used as a building stone. The huge deposits of basalt in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat are used as building stones since ancient times. Arrest order against 9 of Dostum’s guards

Afghanistan attorney-general has ordered the arrest of nine guards of Vice- President Abdul Rashid Dostum for the alleged rape and torture of another politician. Ahmad Ishchi, a former governor, was allegedly punched in the face by Dostum in November and hauled into an armoured vehicle. Ischchi has said that his captors, Dostum’s bodyguards, beat him and sexually assaulted him. The arrest warrants were issued after Dostum’s bodyguards ignored the previous three summons for questioning. Taliban asks Trump to review policy, quit

In a media statement released on 21 January following US President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Taliban have asked him to review the US policy in Afghanistan and begin a withdrawal of all foreign forces from the country. The Taliban said that the violence would continue if the Trump administration continued to follow the approaches of the previous Obama and Bush administrations. The statement comes at a important time, as the Trump administration has not revealed its policy on Afghanistan yet. Russia ‘No’ to US withdrawal

The Russian foreign ministry released a statement saying that if the US withdrew its forces from the Afghanistan, the situation would worsen significantly. True friend, says US

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late Tuesday night conversation with US President Donald Trump, at the latter’s behest, revolved around talks of strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries and to work together in the global fight against terrorism. The two leaders also spoke on a wide range of issues, including trade, economy, defence and terrorism. The White House said in a statement that President Trump thinks of India as a “true friend” to the United States and has extended an invitation for PM Modi to visit the country later this year. Strategic ties with UAE

With the arrival of Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Chief Guest for the Republic Day, the two countries sealed 14 agreements, including a comprehensive strategic partnership. Apart from the strategic partnership, agreements on defence industries, maritime transport, cyber security, shipping and transport were also signed. India and the UAE have condemned efforts by states to use religion to sponsor and sustain terrorism against other countries, and resolved to cooperate in countering terrorism by adopting a policy of “zero tolerance” towards the menace. The two sides agreed to coordinate efforts to counter radicalisation and misuse of religion by groups and countries for inciting hatred and perpetrating acts of terrorism. Akhilesh writes to PM on Budget

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting that the Union Budget be presented after the Assembly elections in the State. He said that if budget is presented before polling commenced, Uttar Pradesh will be deprived of schemes. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that the budget cannot be delayed on account of state elections. Voting in Punjab and Goa begins on February 4 while it will be held in seven stages across Uttar Pradesh from February 11, the same day when it would be wrapped up in Uttarakhand and Manipur. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions has held that the 2015 arrest and continued imprisonment of former Defence Minister, Col Mohamed Nazim was illegal and arbitrary. Nuclear missile tested

Pakistan successfully tested the Ababeel nuclear capable surface-to-surface on 24 January, the army’s media wing said. The Ababeel missile can reach targets at a range of 2,200 km and is able to deliver multiple warheads and evade radar detection. This test firing follows the launch of Pakistan’s first submarine-launched cruise missile Babur on 10 January. Maryam Safdar, the daughter of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is the beneficial owner of a number of offshore companies named in the Panama Papers, according to a German daily. SuddeutscheZeitung posted documents on 23 January which show Safdar listed as the beneficiary of Nescoll Limited, an offshore company registered in British Virgin Islands, with her brother Hussain Nawaz Sharif listed as signatory. While owning off-shore companies is not illegal in Pakistan, the Sharifs will continue to be challenged on the source of those funds. Indian fishermen held

Over 60 Indian fishermen were arrested by Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) on 26 January for allegedly straying into Pakistan’s territorial waters. While their detention was not made public, they are expected to be presented before a judicial magistrate on 28 January. A spokesman for the PMSA said that the arrests came after the Indian fishermen were found fishing in Pakistani waters and did not leave despite warnings from the officials. LTTE bid on TNA MP

The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) of the police has arrested four former LTTE cadres for plotting to kill senior TNA parliamentarian M A Sumanthiran over the past couple of months.
