Transparency and layering, eloquently expressed in this ethereal “Recycled Jamdani” panel, inform much of the work and practice of Los Angeles–based artist and designer Christina Kim. Though these are characteristics—and concepts—that don’t always play well together, in the deft hands of Kim and the various artisans she works with via her clothing label dosa, not only do they aesthetically coexist but they also define the label’s ethos of profound care and respect for makers and making.
Hand-woven in Bengal using the finest of cotton threads and famously described as “woven air,” jamdani textiles are by definition translucent, emerging from the loom as subtle veils of color sprinkled with floral or figured motifs painstakingly laid in by hand as the weaver progresses inch by careful inch. On a 2002 working trip to Ahmedabad, India, Kim was struck by the intricacies and color palette she saw in a stack of jamdani saris on display at the West Bengal booth of an Indian textile fair. Drawn in by their hues, patterns, and the palpable labor involved in their making, she delved into jamdani’s royal history and its contemporary production and mindfully folded this yardage into her dosa clothing line for the ensuing five years.
Far from obfuscating the fabric’s origins, Kim’s process of incorporating the jamdani lengths into dosa’s garment silhouettes entailed deep research and direct engagement with the makers, increasing rather than obscuring the visibility of the Bengali artisans and the sophistication of their work. Through visual and written narratives that promote the collection and celebrate the many aspects of artisan involvement (see, for example, the dosa glossary), Kim brings to light the many layers that comprise her final forms. Final, perhaps, is not quite the right word, though. Kim keeps the narrative alive as she saves every scrap left on the cutting room floor of her LA sewing studio.
Kim has long been interested in mending and reusing leftover materials. Her childhood memories of South Korea are colored by the scarcity of material objects and the need to care for them. In light of this personal history, she made sure to preserve the jamdani narrative by designing panels such as this one, patched, layered, and appliquéd together by artisans in Gujarat, India, who employed their traditional skills on scraps of fabric made on the other side of the Indian subcontinent. In the end, the finished panels of recycled scraps made 800 meters of new material that went into the making of 409 new garments. And the leftovers from that made another generation of recycled panels for garments and curtains. Even the smallest tidbits ended up in amulets with Hindu blessings inside.
Just one of many in Kim’s thoughtful design oeuvre, this panel exemplifies the ways that this gifted designer connects fabric and people and engages with cultural and material history. Recut, rearranged, pieced, and layered together to form a new whole, such designs crystallize makers’ histories and memories and the value of material goods.

SC gears up for live streaming of sessions

NEW DELHI: Following the baby steps taken by Gujarat High Court a week ago to live stream its proceedings, the Supreme Court is preparing to take a giant technological leap by undertaking a comprehensive exercise for live streaming of court proceedings of all courts in the three-tier justice delivery system. Two years and two months after a three-judge SC bench, through a judgment, agreed in principle for early start of live streaming of apex court proceedings, the E-Committee headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud has set up a sub-committee to frame rules for video-conferencing proceedings for all HCs and subordinate courts as well as to evolve a mechanism for possible live streaming of proceedings with safeguards. A bench headed by Gujarat HC Chief Justice Vikram Nath on October 26 live streamed its proceedings through YouTube. Though Justice Chandrachud termed it a bold step, he believed it was more of an ad hoc arrangement. “We need to evolve a permanent mechanism governed by rules and regulations for live streaming of court proceedings,” he told TOI. The panel set up by the E-Committee will give its report on four important aspects — infrastructure required for live streaming of proceedings from all HCs and nearly 20,000 trial courts; funds needed for this gigantic project that will have to be broken up state-wise; software suitable for this endeavour; and the central assistance required through budgetary allocations. Justice Chandrachud said it would be ideal to have e-cloud for every state with dedicated servers that would be manned by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) or any dedicated organisation. “Finding the right kind of software is key to the success of the endeavour,” he added. The pandemic caused closure of courts and their shifting to virtual mode saw the E-Committee frame rules for judicial proceedings through video-conferencing. “Most HCs have adopted the model rules framed by the E-Committee for virtual hearing of cases,” Justice Chandrachud said. On September 26, 2018, a bench of then CJI Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud had allowed the plea of PIL petitioner Swapnil Tripathi for live streaming of SC proceedings. Justices Misra and Khanwilkar had said, “We reiterate that Supreme Court Rules, 2013, will have to be suitably amended to provide for the regulatory framework as per the contours delineated hereinabove (for live streaming). We may hasten to add that it would be open to frame such regulatory measures as may be found necessary for holistic live streaming of court proceedings, without impinging upon the cause of administration of justice in any manner.” Writing a concurring but separate judgment, Justice Chandrachud had said, “Our legal system subscribes to the principle of open justice. The prayer for live-streaming of courtroom proceedings has its genesis in this principle. Live streaming will allow real-time access to courtroom proceedings to litigants and to every member of society. Not all cases may be live streamed. Certain sensitive cases like matrimonial or sexual assault cases should be excluded from the process of live streaming. “The final authority to regulate suspension or prohibition of live streaming in a particular case where the administration of justice so requires, must be with the presiding judge of each court; Live streaming will be carried out only by persons or any agency authorised under the directions of the Chief Justice of India, or as contemplated in the rules. The streaming and broadcasting will be hosted by this court on its website with the assistance of the National Informatics Centre and the ministry of electronics and information technology.”

(File) In its report on north Gujarat, The Nanavati Commission gave a clean chit to the police, BJP, VHP and Bajrang Dal and attributed the massacres in Mehsana and Sabarkantha districts of this region, to anger on account of the Godhra train burning incident of February 27, 2002. It cited instances to prove that in fact the Hindus were either assaulted for helping Muslims or they alerted the Muslims about possible attacks. These two districts lost maximum number of lives in the riots in this region. It noted that barring Mehsana that saw two convictions, the Sardarpura and DIpda Darwaja massacre cases in which 33 and 11 persons were killed respectively, several cases in which chargesheets were filed saw acquittals, going by the inference in the final report that was tabled in the Gujarat Assembly on Wednesday. The districts are Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Gandhinagar and Patan, where rest of the complaints saw A-summaries being filed, according to the report. A-summary is filed in cases where the identity of the accused is not established for a prolonged period, while some cases continued to be pending in courts. The group departed Mumbai on the evening of Friday, 16th February 2018 by road in a comfortable AC mini-bus & after an eventful journey of fun, food & friendship, reached Ahmedabad – India’s only World Heritage City & Gujarat’s economic powerhouse in the early hours on Saturday, 17th February 2018. After checking in the hotel & freshening up with a hearty breakfast, the group reached the premises of Erhardt + Leimer (India) Pvt. Ltd. on the outskirts of the city.
The group was welcomed by Mr. S. C. Joshi, Manager (HR) & Mr. S. Rajaram, Managing Director (MD) who after a brief introduction about the company profile, guided the group in two separate teams towards the Electronics Engineering Division & the Testing & Assembly Section of the plant. In the Electronics Engineering Division, students came face-to-face with almost every aspect of what their curriculum offered – right from the electronic devices, components, PCBs to load cells, sensors, transducers, electrical AC & DC motors with their speed control techniques; it offered students a chance to actually bridge the gap between text-book level knowledge & practical applications. Here the group was briefed about the use & applications of electronics engineering to their products & services. In the Testing & Assembly Section, students were shown the general assembly of industrial automation controllers & programmable logic controllers (PLC) with their applications. The group was also shown the placement & calibration of various sensors & transducers for web guiding systems & web tension monitoring systems. The factory visited ended with a break for a delicious lunch sponsored by E+L.
Taking out time from his busy schedule, Mr. S. Rajaram addressed the students on the importance of personal & professional ethics, communication and code of conduct, discipline & teamwork for working in any industrial organization. He stressed on the importance of life-long learning whenever any person gets the chance to do so. His message to the future generation of engineers was clear – they should give in their best whenever they get a chance to do so. He mentioned that success doesn’t come as free lunch but one must work hard & be the best in whatever they do. After vote of thanks to the entire team of E+L by Prof. Jayen Modi; the group left the industrial complex with a lot more than just bookish knowledge. They were perhaps buoyed by the fact that it was the practical demonstration that mattered the most as they saw real-life things beyond their scope of studies.
After an enriching visit to E+L, the group moved towards Gujarat Science City in evening of Saturday, 17th February 2018. Located in Hebatpur, Ahmedabad is part of a government initiative to draw more students towards education in science. The center hosts an IMAX 3D theatre, an energy park, a hall of science, Planet Earth, amphitheatre, Life Science Park and dancing musical fountains among others. The center also provides housing for students preparing for science exams. Since 5 years, program called ‘Vacation Training Program on Bio-resources for school children’ is even organised by Science city with the help of government funds to encourage students regarding Bio-resources. It is a month-long program for students who gave their SSC exams, each from every district of the state. Popularization of science to create scientific temper in the community is a priority in the emerging environment of knowledge-driven economic growth. Gujarat Science City is a bold initiative of the Government of Gujarat to realize this priority. The Government is creating a sprawling center at Ahmedabad which aims to provide a perfect blend of education and entertainment. It will showcase contemporary and imaginative exhibits, minds on experiences, working models, virtual reality, activity corners, labs and live demonstrations to provide an understanding of science and technology to the common man. Here the group indulged in the Hall of Science, Electrodome, Hall of Space & other scientific attractions which the Gujarat Science City had to offer.
The Department of Space, as the inheritor of the legacy of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the doyen of Indian Space Programme has dedicated its efforts to bring the benefits of space technology by developing and deploying satellite communications and earth observations systems which can enable and assist environment friendly and socially equitable development. India has firmly progressed step-by-step in this direction ever since it was given a go ahead by the Government of India. Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition (VSSE) is housed at Ahmedabad, which happens to be the hometown of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. This exhibition is an attempt to share with the general public ISRO achievements, hopes and concerns through the media of working models, live panels, static displays, the 3D theatre and the interactive multimedia presentations.
On Sunday, 18th February 2018 after a refreshing night’s sleep & a hearty breakfast, the group checked out of the hotel to proceed towards VSSE. After carefully following instructions from the volunteers, the group was given an overview about the country’s space programme & its achievements in 3D theatre.
In the afternoon, the group indulged in sightseeing at the Gandhi Ashram on banks of the Sabarmati river & visited a vintage car museum. With these activities, a two-day fun-filled, educative & informative journey came to close. The group left Ahmedabad in the evening on Sunday, 18th February 2018 & safely reached Mumbai early morning on Monday, 19th February 2018.
The visit was very well received & appreciated by all the students as it was an enriching & learning experience for all of them, especially with visiting E+L & seeing a core industry in operation sitting right in the heart of it. The exhibits at VSSE made students realize the achievements of our country in space research. Gujarat Science City took them back to their junior college & F.E. days & made them see different scientific phenomenon afresh completely from a new perspective. This visit certainly facilitated in building a bridge to narrow the gap between curriculum & real world applications.
 All the staff & students acknowledge IEEE – WIE council, Prof. Kranti Wagle & Prof. Garima Tripathi. The group was grateful for the permission granted by Dr. D. V. Bhoir, Professor & Head of Electronics Engineering Department & Dr. Srija Unnikrishnan, Principal of the Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues College of Engineering (Mumbai). Such visits will not only bolster students’ understanding & help them for the real life applications but will also be a stepping stone in making related subjects technically more proficient.
