Y/N longs for a new life when the one she’d been living comes to an abrupt stop. Without much thought to those she is leaving behind, the little fox packs a backpack and disappears. She stumbles across the shelter and makes an interim home for herself while she works out exactly what she wants from her second chance.

"Honeys I'm home" Taehyung calls through the door.

His cheery tone is the complete opposite of what you expect to hear from him given his news. Actually you hadn't expected to hear his voice again today at all. You'd all been going through your nightly routines, preparing for bed in separate areas of the annex, but Taehyung's voice attracts you all to the main room like a magnet.

Jimin reaches him first, delighted when Taehyung swept him into his arms, dipping him before kissing him sweetly. The red panda giggles and all tension that had been held in the house recently dissipates, except for yours. You can't help but be suspicious of his sudden turn in mood, especially after how he had practically thrown you out of his family's estate this morning.

"We need to have a family meeting," He announces to the room.

"Right now? It's late can't it wait..." Yoongi grumbles, leaning on Hoseok as he yawns.

"Absolutely, it has to be right now!" Taehyung affirms cheerily. 

The members of your pack grumble a little in their tired state, but shuffle into the main living area, flopping into a pile on the extra-large sofa. Jungkook pulls you down to lie on top of him, wrapping his arms protectively around your waist, Jimin's head falls into your lap and stretches his legs along the other three men. 

Taehyung sits on the coffee table, his leg bouncing with anxiety as he looks over each member of the pack.

"There is no easy way for me to explain why I haven't been coming home as often as we all would like," He begins, the cheerful attitude he had come in with dissipating with one deep breath. 

Jimin reaches a hand out to pat Taehyung's knee, connecting him to the rest of your pile. The panda tenses under the touch that would normally erase any trepidation from him. 

"You're all aware that I need to help with my family's businesses more at this time of year, what you are not aware of is the amount of control my family has over me. They control my social calendar, my finances, and as of late my love life..."

He pauses to take in the variety of expressions he is faced with. Confusion and upset marr most of your packs' faces. You on the other hand are nervously chewing at your lip, waiting for him to reach the gut-punching conclusion. You were certain that Taehyung wouldn't come home this quickly, and the fact that he had must've meant he was going to go along with his father's plan... But then why would he have come in so happy?

Either way, your stomach was twisting itself in knots. 

"A few weeks ago my parents made me aware that they had given away my hand in marriage to a business partner's daughter,"

This news has all the pack members sitting at attention. Jimin wrenches his head out of your lap to sit up straight as the others lean towards Taehyung. You almost topple from Jungkook's lap with the speed at which he straightens. The entire room begins to reek of negative pheromones. 

"You can't be serious," Yoongi growls.

"That should be illegal in this day and age," Hoseok exclaims.

"It is!" Namjoon says jaw clenched. 

"Forced arranged marriages are illegal, and while technically under duress, I would not have been forced to marry her... If I had any plans of going ahead with it that is."

"You seemed pretty set to go ahead with it this morning," You grumble.

"You knew?!" Jungkook and Jimin, shout together. 

This time, you do fall from Jungkook's lap, Taehyung barely reaching to stabilise you as you almost hit the floor. 

"How come you didn't say anything?" Jimin pouts.

"It wasn't her job to tell us," Seokjin says calmly, turning everyone's attention back to Taehyung. 

"My parents threatened to take away my inheritance if I didn't agree, so at the time I agreed," Taehyung continues.

He goes through the motions of explaining everything he had already explained to you that morning. His story is occasionally interrupted with dramatic cries of unfair treatment. By the time he has finished telling them what you already knew, they were all reacting the same way you had. They each assure him that the money isn't important, and that everyone in the pack can help to support him. 

Taehyung shuts them down the same way he had you. He insists that he has money to care for each of them, no matter how many times they tell him how much he is worth to them. You stay quiet watching each of them try and fail to come up with a solution to Taehyung's predicament that would mean he got to keep everything he wanted. And you watch as each of their faces fall, coming to the same empty conclusions you did. 

That's when you look at Tae to find him already looking at you. And he is grinning.

"What?" You ask, louder than planned.

Everyone turns to look at the two of you.

"I Love you," He grins.

"This hardly seems like the time for that..." you blush.

"Do you love me?" He asks, taking your hand in his.

"Of course I do..."

"Will you marry me?"

"SORRY?" You pull your hand back as if he stung you.

Everyone is staring at him like he has grown a second head.

"Is your plan to elope with Y/N so you can't marry this other girl?" Namjoon asks, "Because you realise that doesn't solve the inheritance issue..."

"And you could've asked any of us..." Jimin mumbles.

"My plan is to marry Y/N L/N, the most eligible girl in my family's social circle. The one girl my father agreed I could marry instead of my current fiance!" His smile is so wide it's clear he is proud of himself for that one. 

Everyone begins to chatter but you can't hear the specifics. Blood has rushed to your ears and all you can hear is the pounding of your own heart as it echoes too loud. You take deep breaths but your lungs feel like they can never expand fully. Your vision begins to swim, unable to maintain a point of focus. 

The conversation around you continues as your partners fail to see that you are drowning on dry land. You dig your nails into the sofa desperately trying to cling to the fabric, to feel the tangible fibres below you.

"Y/N?" someone's voice breaks through, but it sounds too far away. 

"Y/N!" another voice sounds more concerned... or maybe it's the same voice...

Have they always sounded so similar?..

Seokjin ponders Taehyung's predicament seriously for a while. The others chat excitedly about the prospect of a wedding. It hardly seems to be a solution though. Jin understands the importance to many about having your own source of income, and it's clear that Taehyung can't wrap his head around the pack wanting to take care of him for just being him. If money and care have always come with a billion rules, it makes sense why he would rather have those rules set by the familiar base of his family than by his partners. But surely there must be more compromises for his family than this.

He is reasonably deep in his analysis of Taehyung when he glances in your direction. He thought you'd been involved in the conversation going on around him, but it would seem not. You're looking around feverously, your knuckles are white with effort and there is a small cut here your teeth have worked through your lower lip.

"Y/N?" He calls out reaching for you.

You don't move as he touches you. You barely seemed to register his presence at all.

"Y/N!" Namjoon calls out.

The leader turns just in time for you to tumble back off the sofa's edge. 

You hit the floor with a dull thud making each of the men around you cringe. Seokjin shoos the others out of his way as he kneels beside you. He waves his hand in front of your eyes as you stare aimlessly up at the ceiling, struggling to focus. He encourages the youngest members to gather things to make you comfortable while telling the other three men to give him some air so he can check you aren't hurt without them breathing down his neck. 

Taehyung holds out a pillow for him and Jin carefully tucks it under your head. Yoongi then pulls Taehyung into him, partly to keep him out of the way, partly to comfort the panda as his scent becomes the most sour in the room. 

Jungkook comes back with a selection of blankets and plushies he knows are your favourites. Jin allows the bunny to tuck them gently around your body, careful not to jostle you too much. 

At this point, Jin is certain you aren't hurt, at least not more than a bruised coxix. But he wants to maintain the bubble of space he has created around you until you come back around.

Jimin hands him ice wrapped in a tea towel and joins the others on the sofa, watching anxiously while they wait for you to wake up. 

Until you come back around they can't know for certain what caused you to pass out, but Jin has a good guess, and it would seem the others might too.

"Did make her do that?" Taehyung asks in a small voice...

"Of course, you didn't make her do that," Jin reassures "Anxiety attacks can be triggered by anything and nothing. This is not your fault Taehyung-ah"

Taehyung doesn't seem particularly appeased by the doctor's answer but it's the best he is going to get for now at least. 

"She should be coming around by now right?" Jungkook asks "I normally come around by now,"

"Every panic attack is different, but judging by the scowl on her lips I'd say any moment now."

You slowly start to feel the world around you again, starting with a cooling sensation on your forehead. Jin's concerned face swims into view and you suddenly become very aware of the ache in your hip from where you must've hit the floor. 

"Next time I'm going to need you to hold on to me tighter," You grumble, finding Jungkook on the edge of the sofa.

You attempt to prop yourself up only for Jin to push you firmly back onto the floor. 

"Stay there for a minute, if you get up too fast the world will swim and you'll end up back there anyway," The doctor says matter of factly.

You begrudgingly lie flat again, knowing he is right. 

"What happened?" Namjoon asks.

"Not sure... Never happened before," you answer. 

While it's mostly true (you have never had a panic attack like that) you are fairly sure you knew what might've caused it... but it was far too late in the day to be psychoanalysing what was behind it.

"Can we just go to bed? Maybe finish this conversation in the morning?" You ask, suddenly overwhelmed by how tired you feel.

"I don't really want you getting up yet," Jin says "But you also can't fall asleep there."

The thought of staying awake for even another second has you involuntarily whining. 

"That's okay, I can fix that," Namjoon says.

Before anyone can object, the leader has you lifted into his arms, cradling you against his chest. He carries you into the first of the two annexe bedrooms, followed by a very eager bunny and red panda. The door is closed behind the four of you. Annoyed grumbles can be heard behind the closed wood, followed by instructions of care from Jin before the others can be heard shuffling away presumably into the second bedroom. 

Namjoon lays you out on the bed and you snuggle into the pillows as bodies fall on either side of you. The caramel scent of Jungkook engulfs you as the rabbit tucks you in beneath his chin, wrapping his arms as tightly around you as he comfortably can obviously taking your earlier comment to heart. 

A small hand lands on your waist that can only belong to Jimin as he reaches over Jungkook's large frame to reach a part of you. 

Namjoon scoots in behind you on the oversized bed, His large frame easily caging you in the middle while one of his arms reaches across to cover his other two packmates. 

"We really need to hurry up and get a bed that fits all eight of us," Jungkook notes.

"It's waiting for us in the main house Kookie, just a couple more weeks," Namjoon reassures him.

"I don't want to wait that long," Jungkook whines.

"You realise even with a bigger bed you won't be able to sleep next to each person right?" Jimin teases.

"I'll find a way," Kookie responds defiantly.

More lazy conversation goes on around you but you're too tired to partake in it. Instead, you let the deep sounds and vibrations of their chests lull you into a deep sleep. 

You try hard not to focus on the new feeling tightening around your chest telling you to run.

As much as she would like to deny it, Jyn Erso can't find it in herself to say she's not attracted to Cassian Andor.

He, in a word, is magnetic.

The kind of person who without trying, pulled you into his orbit. Called to you and kept you in, with his smarts, his kindness, his fiercesomeness that hides well behind his eyes. But, oh, she knows better than to underestime that man. She's seen him rip someone to shreds with words, never using a single insult. It was hot, honestly.

Which is what brought her here. In Leia's apartment as she drank her second shot of tequila, and did her best not to cry.

Leia, for her part, has been surprisingly patient. But it does not mean she's not been making rather pointed remarks about the cowardice of her not telling Cassian how she feels.

"He's just so perfect," she near sobs. Tequila shot firmly clasped in her hand, while eying the bottle. She should go for shot number three. "I mean, the man is a lawyer - of the good ones. So, by that alone, he's basically an unicorn. But does it end there? No. He does probono work and donates to charities. And he's an awesome cook. And have I said smart? And what I am? A trash panda."

"Jyn, you are not a trash panda," Leia doesn't bother hiding her eye roll. "You are a successful small business owner, that is something to be proud of. Hell, I know that Cassian admires that."

"He does?"

"Yes. He's told me it was very brave of you to start your own business. He knows how hard that is, do not make yourself less."

She looks at Leia, "Think I have a chance?"

"Of course you do," Leia says with finality. "Cassian's not an idiot, as you have pointed out, so yes. He knows you are quite the catch yourself and I'm sure that if you gave him a sign, he'd ask you out."

She does not pout, but it's a near thing. "Then why doesn't he?"

"Because it's you," Leia states as if it was the most obvious thing. "He saw you punch a man who called you 'hottie'; he knows that he shouldn't try something without you making the first move."

"Oh."

They fall silent. She takes the third shot of tequila, because, why the hell not? Once the alcohol has burnt her worries away, she stands, surprisingly sober, look Leia in the eye and declares, "I am going to ask Cassian out tomorrow."

"Good," Leia nods. "He really likes coffee, and more specifically 'Luna's Café', they make his favorite kind. What did he called it? Oh yes, café de la olla. Take him one, he'll love that."

"Got it." She nods at Leia. "Well, best go home and do my best to recover from this tequila. I have a lawyer to seduce."

Leia smirks, "That's the spirit."

She nods again, grabs her purse and jacket and prepares herself to grab a taxi, she won't wait for a car, and her own apartment is not too far away. "Thank you, Leia."

"You're welcome, Jyn."

They weren’t there anymore.

Kenyan searched the garden upside down, the castle, the forest, the city… but nobody saw them. Sure, her description of them wasn’t the greatest, but people had to notice that glowing person. They weren’t someone you glance at only once; they were like a magnet attracting her, and it should have happened with everyone else, too.

They had to be a figment of her imagination. A self-relief her brain came up with, that somehow worked.

Last night she fell in a deep slumber while hugging that panda (Hiélo said she threatened to set fire on him if he tried to take it), and that was far the best sleep she had in years. No dreams, no nightmares, no interruptions… just a full eight hours of rest. The migraine and nausea still came when she woke up, but that was common. She couldn’t have asked for anything better! Trying my hand at dyeing a doll for the first time. Dyeing subjects are a Dream Valley Uncia in white that I'm turning into a red panda and a Pipos Mouse in yellow.

I set up a station in the back yard since I heard the dye could smell. It was a good call. Yuck.

End of day 1 the red ended up too light. It got dark and I couldn't tell that they needed longer.

Day 2 I added a little more brown and yellow to the pot and dyed the parts longer. Lost all the magnets in the pot but it was worth it.

Frank Keane - DCI from MIT. Rubbed everyone up the wrong way and thought the sun shone out of his daughter - Emma's - arse.

Karen Lacy - stuck up DI from SO15 who immediately alienated most of Sun Hill after Emma's death by refusing to let her friends in uniform help and would only let them man a cordon and then told Jack that CID could only help if EVERYTHING was run by her and came back to her and her alone.

Tom Baker - TREV which was a fan-coined term that stands for Totally Reliable Extra Veteran'. Tom was an outstanding backup CID member for over a thousand episodes. He's even in the Guinness Book Of World Records for it.

Terry Knowles - Terry was a Special Constable who idolized Des and wanted to be like him. He tried to copy how he'd seen him pick up a woman and flirt at a blonde in a convertible. Unfortunately, it all went wrong when she stabbed him in the neck and severed his jugular and he died, leaving a 2-year-old son fatherless.

Doug Wright - husband of Sgt Nikki Wright. Nikki transferred to Sun Hill when she got fed up with the confusion over two Sgt Wright's and then having to work opposing shifts. He's based at Sun Hill but they cross over to police a football match. Sadly Doug ends up getting stabbed and they realise there's a Cop Killer on the loose after he taunts them and goes on to murder new recruit Billy Rowan on his very first day.

Mark Rollin - Lance Powell's Boyfriend/Fiance/Civil Partner/Husband. Mark is a Sgt in CO19 and keeps his sexuality hidden to avoid the banter and bullying. He goes to pieces after shooting dead Jeff Clarke and he and Lance separate - only for Lance to go out drinking to try to cheer himself up. It ended with Lance being murdered by a gay serial killer pair.

Steve Hodges - an irritating little man who was the Detective Superintendent at CIB at the time that Claire Stanton was undercover trying to get information to prove that Don Beech was corrupt. He expected Claire to pull evidence out of her arse and moaned constantly.

Rachel Kitson - Crime Scene Photographer who murdered old school friend turned Super Model Cindy Statham. She got away with it and someone else was accused and locked up...but then Jo went back and looked at the footage again as she had a niggling feeling. Rachel realised she was on to her and took her hostage at gunpoint. It was Stuart getting suspicious when he received a text calling him 'hun' and realising that something was very wrong that saved her life with seconds to go.

Rod Jessop - June's second husband after Jim. He is a headteacher and a good man who has 2 children of his own. At first, June isn't too sure as she thinks he's a little too keen but she warms to him and they fall in love and take early retirement together.

Irene Radford - Mother of Karl, Wayne and David Radford, a large crime family with a history going back decades with Gina. She takes Gina hostage at one point and she and David are literally seconds from killing Smithy and Kerry at another point!

Louise Larson - Wife of Pete Larson. Unhappily married but settled until she met Smithy. Feisty, sarcastic and full of one-liners, she kept him on his toes and they wanted to leave after she agreed to give evidence (Pete was arrested after almost murdering Smithy. I'm sensing a theme here).

Abi Nixon - The cause of Sam shrieking "MY DAUGHTER!!!!!" Had a fling with Matt Boyden - as you do. Then ended up pregnant and engaged to Hugh Wallis - a profiler - who manipulated Abi into it as revenge. He forced Sam to think her daughter was a victim of the Serial Killer. She keeps the baby and her relationship with her mother improves.

Cindy Hunter - Phil Hunter's wife who sees all he does on the side and - usually forgives him, even when a major criminal demands he be allowed to sleep with Cindy. Gregory doesn't force her to sleep with him but does take degrading pictures of her to wind Phil up. She still forgives him... but she can't get past finding out he has a daughter with another major criminal's wife when they are trying for a baby of their own and they finally split.

Jenny Delaney - The girlfriend of George Garfield at first, Jenny is the nurse who looks after Dave Quinnan when he is attacked and left for dead in a youth club. She and Dave fall in love and have an affair which ends up in George leaving Sun Hill. They marry but do not get their happily ever after as Dave and Polly grow closer... and closer...

Kristen Shaw - Drug dealer who Zain goes undercover to catch and he ends up falling for her. She accidentally murders Honey by shooting her when the gun goes off in a struggle (Honey was trying to get Zain to do the right thing and arrest her with him). Zain reluctantly puts Honey's body in the water and they try to escape but in the end, he can't go through with it and refuses to get on the boat with her to escape. He removed the bullets from her gun and so both ended up arrested.

James Tennant - The father of Amy Tennant. This storyline goes on forever for over a year and Neil and James get close and become good friends through it before Amy is found.

Scott Burnett - Scott is the husband of a woman who is found murdered. At first his best friend is charged with it and as his FLO, Honey helps support him through it. They fall in love and in a whirlwind romance they get married.... only for Honey to realise that Scott actually murdered his first wife!

Laura Meadows - Jack's long-suffering wife of almost 30 years who put up with a lot, including affairs. It comes to a head when Jack - in full midlife crisis mode - thinks he's in love with Debbie McAllister and wants to support her and her new baby. Debbie thinks of him mostly as a father figure and is horrified when he finally puts the moves on.

Lilian Rickman - Cass' mum is devastated when her daughter is killed by the Sun Hill Serial Killer. She travels down and bonds with the team and later invites them to the funeral in Liverpool which some travel up to and then have to go straight on shift once they get back to London. She later returns to tie up the sale of Cass' flat and she and Tony grow closer and end up sleeping together.

Marie Graham/Carver - The bereaved mother whose daughter killed herself after being accused of sleeping with underage students. She's an alcoholic who seemed to understand Jim and all his problems... and then started to abuse him 2 days after their marriage. (he should have known it was a bad omen when he and June almost kissed the day of the wedding when trapped with Polly and Tony!)He is accused of abusing her before he ends up in the hospital (Gabriel hit him over the back of the head with a vodka bottle - long story) and he cracks under accusations and shows his many wounds. He leaves Marie and goes on to recover and get back together with June... only for Marie to turn up on THEIR wedding day and cause a scene at the reception and then fall down the stairs and knock herself out. Jim, with a sprained ankle, ends up going into hospital too!

Pauline Smith - Smithy's mum seen in Killer On The Run. His father was an abusive drunk who used to knock her and Smithy around until Smithy was old enough to go out with his friends. Smithy has little to do with his unnamed father and next to no contact. Pauline adores her son and is very proud of him. They are close and Smithy has a key to her house. He also had an unnamed little brother as a PC (mentioned in Soft Talking) but this seemed forgotten when he returned as a Sgt.

Which turned to kissing in bed, which turned to other things. Peace, for once. Sweaty hours spent with his armed wrapped around your shoulders, your front, his face pressed into your neck. The hours after, your hands in his hair, your lilting murmuring against the shell of his ear. 

He didn't mean for it to happen.

He can't say he regrets it, either. Though it scares him. 

"Cariño?" he prompts, stepping into a pair of sweatpants.

"Sorry, what did you say?" you ask, setting your phone down on the bedside table. 

He can't be mad at the phone for distracting you. That's the whole reason he got it for you, purple and shiny and foldable, something he knew would draw and keep your attention when he's not around. You're having a hard time making friends, and there's not always stuff for you to do within the Society. It was a gift for himself as well as you, he wanted to know you weren't sitting alone in your room (his room) with nothing to do. 

"How are you?"

"I made you a charm for you phone," you say. 

You insisted he have a phone too so you could text him. He groaned, complained, grumbled, but it is the very best part of his day when he gets to turn on his stupid pink phone and see you've texted him a photo of the bedroom floor, one of your crafts in front of you, a socked foot and naked ankle in the corner of the picture. 

"That's not how you are," he says after he's pulled on a t-shirt. Miguel treks back into the main part of the room and sits at the bottom of the bed. He pulls your feet into his lap because nobody can tell him not to, quick to press a thumb into the arch of your foot. You're wearing fuzzy socks. "That's what you did. How are you? You didn't come and see me today, what's with that?" 

"Sorry, I made such a huge mess earlier I had to clean and it took hours and by the time I was done I thought I better shower." Your smile is magnetic. 

"It doesn't have to be spotless." 

"It's not my room. I'm not an asshole." 

Miguel's not used to this… anymore. And things are different with you than they'd been before: you know him for who he is, this version of him, the mean, short-tempered, spiky him, where Gabri and her mother had known someone else. Still him, still real, but different. His head aches whenever he remembers —and he remembers all of the time— but being with you helps that. You're not her, and you don't have to be. 

You know Miguel at his worst, and you like him anyway. It has to count for something. 

"It's not not your room," he says carefully, hand running up your leg to your knee. He strokes back down, a lazy back and forth. 

"I know I've overstayed," you say, "but that's your fault."

"That's my fault." 

Miguel pulls your legs down enough to make your head flop off of his pillow, hoping for a disgruntled grunt or a whined, "Miguel." You stay flopped on your back and don't say anything, to his displeasure. He sighs and pulls you bodily into his lap, scooping you up with little energy expelled. 

"I forget how strong you are," you say, in his lap like a princess carry, eyelashes kissing the skin under your brows as you look up at him. 

"How can you forget?" 

"I don't know, especially when you toss me around like a half full sack of flour. I think I have a bruise from your hand last night," you say, pulling your leg up across the other, knee away from him where you're in his lap to show him the underside of your thigh. Miguel tries not to blush at the memory, but the ghost of a dork at his core knows how salacious it is to have your girlfriend in your lap with her shorts pushed down, showcasing skin you bruised during a particularly rough moment. "Can you see? It feels sore." 

A mottling of wine-stain contusion in the shape of his hand indeed takes station at the base of your thigh. It's not bad. If you had better enhancements you'd have healed by now, but your particular spider wasn't anything special.

"Perdóname," he says under his breath, brushing over it lightly with his thumb. 

"It doesn't matter, don't be sorry, I was just wondering if it was really real." You let your leg drop heavily on top of his. Nothing but adoring shines in your eyes as you smile. "I don't care, Miguel."

"I didn't mean to–" 

"I know." 

He lifts his chin as you sit up in his lap. You kiss his neck, his jaw, and the skin below his ear, your smile audible as you murmur, "I liked it. I kind of like having the bruise, too. Don't feel bad." 

He'd felt the opposite of bad in the moment. "You're sure I didn't hurt you?" he asks quietly. 

He doesn't look down, can't, not until he knows. You comb your fingers through the hair at the back of his neck. "I'm sure," you say. "As if you could." 

"Oh, is that how it is?" he asks, trying hard not to laugh. 

"That's so how it is." 

He finally faces you again, pretending like he might gear up for a fight. He holds your gaze, brows set, eyes severe. "Show me the charm you made me," he demands. 

You laugh through your nose and climb out of his lap. "You're gonna love it. It looks like a jellyfish." 

He can't imagine how having a jellyfish charm hanging from his phone will go down with the girls, but he finds he doesn't mind. Having something you made with your own two hands is too special to pass up. 

“I made one for myself, too,” you say, digging through your box of beads to find the charms you made. You turn around holding both to your chest, your pride endearing.

“Yours isn't on your phone.”

You flicker with an uncharacteristic bashfulness. “Well, I only wanted to have them if we both had them, and I don't know if you’re okay with having one. It’s sort of loud.”

“If loud bothered me, you’d know by now,” he teases. He holds out his hand, gesturing when you don’t take it. “Come on, come back. Show me how to put it on my phone case.”

All his added sweetness is worth it to feel your smile as you clamber back into the space between his thighs and duck your face into his neck, hugging him quickly, arms thrown around his neck. “You’re the best,” you say quietly. 

He really doesn’t feel like it, but hearing you say it is a load off. He relaxes under your weight, thinking your shared cohabitation might be one of the best accidents he's ever had.

Two Chocolate Chips

One of the first tasks in the morning, aside from the bleary eyed walk-slide you do with your slippers scruffing against your floor, is check the fridge. Not the inside, but the outside, on the top right corner. It’s just a plain old stainless steel fridge with no sense of character like cute trinkets or sticky notes because he thinks they’re considered dust collectors, but the appliance is accessorized with one magnet picked very carefully. You remember the half hour you had spent in the craft store aisle as your boyfriend dutifully went through every bin so that he may pick the perfect magnet that suits his purposes.

One, it had to black or white. Neutral. He didn’t want a color to influence him in the moment. Narrowing it down, he then had to choose a theme. There were pandas, a Star Wars one. Or did he want the one stylized as a 70s American comic strip? It was imperative that he find one that resonated with him, something that had the capacity to enunciate the words he couldn’t always effectively communicate.

The two of you walked out with an emotions magnet decorated with cat faces thirty minutes later, hand in hand, with a small grin on his face. He looked giddy, a little excited, like the innocent nature of children on Christmas morning.

So now, your daily regimen - before your coffee, before you brush your teeth or wash your face- is to take a look at the magnet to get a gauge of how Sakusa is feeling that day.

This morning has Sakusa feeling… conflicted.

Your shoulders slump a bit at the sight, disappointed that the activities from the night before and a well rested sleep hadn’t rejuvenated him. Sakusa had come home yesterday feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes life gets that way for no reason at all and you wanted to help him through it. With a clingy boyfriend tagging behind you like a mopey rendition of Peter Pan, you staged a couple’s night in filled with bath bombs, face masks, warm blankets, and comfort foods paired with comfort movies. You wanted to provide him a getaway, a reprieve from the daily toils that life likes to offer.

But it seems that was not enough to ease Sakusa’s mind, and that’s fine. You’re glad that he’s capable of being honest with you, something that he considered difficult until he found his perfect medium for communication. It only means you need to try harder. Looking at the clock, your boyfriend just barely started his morning jog, giving you a little less than an hour to get everything ready. You’re pulling out pans, and sifting through the pantry, running to the closet, searching through the dryer, until everything is all set and all you need to do is decorate.

Sakusa walks through the door while you’re pulling out plates with your favorite little grimace across his face. It’s the cute kind of grimaces that make you smile when you see it, a boyish little thing that is obviously upset and trying so hard not to be.

So you walk carefully towards him like tentative footsteps when you tiptoe in the dark for a midnight snack, and slide your hands over his ribs until you’ve caged him in and they’re behind his back. He’d normally swat you lovingly away with a hidden grin, complaining that he’s sweaty and that he needs to shower first, before he gives into your touch and places a quick peck to your lips and a breathy murmur of good morning, my love. I missed you while I was away.

Today he slinks in your embrace with a welcomed fervor.

“Hello, handsome,” You twirl your fingers through his hair. “How was your run?”

He has to sigh before answering, but you appreciate it, because you know this means he’s trying. He’s trying his hardest to be honest and vulnerable and you think you’ve come a long way since then.

“Just okay.” He mutters, “Not the best.”

Usually the answer is refreshing, invigorating. Words that usually describe a nice summer dip into the pool and a weekend spa trip. Not so much descriptors of a jog, you’re saddened by the lack those words today.

“Sorry, Omi. Why don’t you go take a shower and I finish up breakfast? I set your clothes out for you.”

“You did?” You smile at the gratitude that glimmers his eyes. It’s like he doesn’t expect good things, to receive them, but you’re more than happy to give anyways.

You nod. “I did. I’ll see you in a bit.”

When Sakusa gets out, you’re more than excited to show him the fruits of your labor. “You’re done? Here! Look! I made you breakfast!”

You don’t even allow him to make it to the table, meeting him halfway and shoving the plate to his face. “Look, that’s your hair.” You point at the stylized curly q’s you drew with whipped cream in an almost expert flourish, if you do say so yourself. “If you were old with white hair. And then look, I drew a smiley face. And look! I made sure to include your cute, little–”

“Moles.” Sakusa finishes in astonishment. His hands are holding yours underneath the plate, but he can’t keep his eyes off your masterpiece.

“They’re chocolate chips. Two of ‘em.” You brag with a smile.

“I love it.” He says, finally looking at you with a full on beam. His cheeks are taut and bright pink, but it’s the happiest you’ve seen him in a while. It makes you feel whole, and it’s the first time you realize that you two truly are partners. That his sorrow is yours. Just like his joy is too. So you share breakfast, a mist of lovestruck gazes wafting through the air like the smell of coffee assaulting your nose.

“Have a good day, baby.” You bid at the foyer before placing a sweet kiss upon his lips.

He grins against your lips, a promise, “I will. Thanks to you.”

You’re back in the kitchen wiping the table down, when you hear the front door open again. Steps squeak like shoes until you find your boyfriend huffing back into the room.

“Omi! Your shoes!”

“Sorry, I’ll be quick. Just forgot something.”

And you chide, because this isn’t the first time. “You gave me a kiss already.”

“No,” He laughs as he walks past you to the fridge door. He places his hand over the magnet, a small hesitation as he carefully inspects his options. Then, with a smile, Sakusa moves the marker. You walk a little closer to peer over his shoulder.

Sakusa turns to you victoriously, and you notice that it seems like Sakusa hasn’t stopped smiling since he saw those pancakes you made him. It all makes sense when you see the magnet.

Today, he feels loved.
