Join us on Friday, May 20th for TRANCE/FORMATIONS, Art Theory Project's latest pop up show curated by Panayiotis Terzis. Seven artists with seven distinct perspectives have been invited to respond to the theme of Transformation and Metamorphosis as it relates to human identity. As our personas become increasingly disembodied, splitting into bits and traveling through fiber optic cables around the planet, infinite possibilities arise in discovering new kinds of consciousness.

The collapse of stable cultural norms and recent advances in technology and communication have armed individuals in the west with the freedom and power to shape their cultural and biological identities like never before. From this fermenting swamp of decay and rebirth, new ways of being will emerge.

Yet at the same time while the communications technologies that are instigating and accelerating this process may be liberating to many, their hypnotic nature and surveillance capabilities make them just as powerful as tools of mass stupification and control. Assaulted by barrages of images on a daily basis, the individual is increasingly vulnerable to manipulation and control.

The rise of robotics, advanced body modification and gene manipulation will lift the cap on our physical potential on the one hand, but put into sharp contrast the definition of what makes up a human being on the other. Does the operator, or sentient being, control and mold the vessel/body, or vice versa? How is consciousness shaped and changed by the body or vessel it inhabits, whether it is made of flesh and bone or plastic, glass and metal? Is culture a kind of technology, and how can it shape and guide consciousness?

What does the future hold for the human race as we begin to take the reigns of our species' evolution and what role do artists and creative people play?
