Part 2. The Moment When Han Sohee Just Exists
Q. When I watched "Sound Track" #1 released last year, I thought of this. ‘What would it be like to be the childhood friend of Han Sohee, a natural person?’ I think it would be fun to film it as a fake documentary.
I also like the fake documentary format. Usually, fake documentaries are often used in the horror genre.
Q. Like "The Office", you can make it into an interview format. By the way, do you have any childhood friends or middle and high school friends you keep in touch with?
There are a lot.
Q. How do they see Sohee who became a star? I think I'd be surprised every day.
just… Look at me like that. That's why we can still be friends. I have middle school friends and high school friends, but they are rather worried about me. They don't even brag about the fact that they know me, but they just sees me as Sohee of that time.
Q. Those relationships are really precious.
of course.
Q. I think the more such relationships there are, the stronger a person becomes. That's what I thought while reading Sohee's blog.
Me? I'm a total fragile, right? (laughs)
Q. ah… It's fragile. (laughs)
The reason I have friends like that is also because I treated them that way. They act without hesitation. Even when I go out drinking or having fun, I don’t hide anything. It's okay for people to recognize it. It's not like you're breaking the law to hang out with your friends. I'd appreciate it if you could recognize me. My friends also seem to feel proud when people recognize me.
Q. I saw a photo of Sohee drinking with her friends a while ago and was a little drunk, and I wondered what to say… I felt the honest warmth I felt in the inn room photos of Hwang Jeongmin, Cho Seungwoo, and Ji Jinhee.
Ah. (Laughs) That’s a little different. They are famous people.
Q. (Laughs) That’s… It's about honesty without embellishment, and it was in the title of a previous interview. Although it is a title written by a reporter, it is ‘Han Sohee, what is more important than beauty is honesty.’ Isn’t this a very important attitude in life?
Isn’t it more obvious than important? Conversely, ask the question, ‘Why can’t I be honest?’ and also ask the question, ‘Why do I have to ‘pretend’?’ I answered that there was absolutely no need for that.
Q. Another interview said that. "It’s a job that requires me to look in the mirror a lot, but I try not to look in the mirror." It also has a similar meaning.
That means this. We have a job that requires us to look in the mirror a lot, so we know what angles look good on our faces. When filming a drama or movie, it's easy to get into the habit of showing only what I want to show. When filming “My Name,” I started the habit of not looking in the mirror so I wouldn’t be bothered by the angle.
Q. There is something in line with the ‘honest attitude toward life’ we talked about earlier.
Yes. In the work, I have to become that character. The desire to show the pretty side of Han Sohee as a person becomes disingenuous in the work. In order to live the life of a character, an honest attitude in acting is to first erase it from memory without looking at where it is pretty and where it is not, and to exclude all elements outside the work. Of course, it doesn't have to continue like that. In a photo shoot like today, the purpose of the shoot is to show my most attractive side.
Q. I think you read a lot of books too.
Lately, I’ve been obsessed with the question, ‘What are emotions?’ What I read recently is '애도 일기 (Journal de Deuil).’ This book is a compilation of the memories the author recorded with her mother over the course of a year, like a diary, after her mother passed away. When reading this book, you can clearly feel the author's emotions. She said that people do not break down in an instant just because they lose someone they love. I live my daily life. Then, she breaks down when she receives a letter from her friend who lives across the river, saying, ‘I saw your mother the day before she died, and she was wearing her gray clothes.’ That one sentence made her come to terms with her mother's death. As I read, I thought about ‘time to accept emotions.’ The time we are aware of depression or sadness can be frighteningly long. So, even if you go through something and are okay now, you may not be okay two or three years from now. So shouldn’t we always doubt our feelings?
Q. What you just said is so cool. Looking closely at one's own emotional state is an essential attitude for everyone, including actors.
that's right. You need to practice objectifying yourself often. Especially your feelings.
Q. I've heard of that before. For example, write down how many minutes it took for me to open my eyes and get out of bed this morning. When I'm depressed, the time gets longer.
It could be something like that. It could be something like how many times I made eye contact with people and smiled today. How was my day today, what did it feel like, what was the temperature, and how many things did I force myself to do today? Remembering these things is very helpful in living. When you're busy, you don't even realize that your mind is getting tired.
Q. I'm a little touched right now.
The human body is more scientific than you might think.
Q. That's right. When you're physically struggling, your mind is really struggling.
It's so hard.(laughs) I can't stay up all night.
Q. Why are reading and watching movies important for actors?
There is a saying that "Sadness is the saddest when you hold back sadness, and laughter is the funniest when you hold back laughter." But there are people who laugh when they are sad, and there are people who are sad when they laugh. Sadness is not all the same sadness, but joy is not all the same joy. We have to express delicate sorrows and subtle joys that are not expressed in words. Reading a lot of books and screens is similar to preparing paint to draw emotions. Of course, drawing with 10 paints is different from drawing with 100 paints. I really want to fill it up and prepare about 1,000. (laughs)
Q. You said you were exploring your emotions earlier. Do you have anxiety among them?
why? Reporter, are you anxious?
Q. Yes. I often get anxious.
I've been reading a very thick book called "The Book of Anxiety" for quite some time. There's something impressive about the book. Everyone feels anxiety except when they sleep for 24 hours. However, we may forget our anxiety by sleeping, exercising, or simply doing simple work. This anxiety is a very thin piece of paper. So we have to diligently clean up today's anxiety and tomorrow's anxiety so that this anxiety does not build up one by one. Every day so that it doesn't build up in my mind anymore.
Q. How do I clean it up?
Have you seen the documentary “Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present” (2011)? If you look at it, you can see a scene where you don't do anything and just stay still. I think that training is the best training for humans to get rid of anxiety. Marina Abramovich brings 30 people to her house to eat almost nothing, close their eyes and train them still in the woods. That's what I do at home these days. Staying still. I don't think about anything and just stay still, whether it's 5 or 10 minutes. I'm vulnerable to anxiety like you. But you can't live your whole life vulnerable. I'm sure we can make the human brain work differently if we know how it works. That's why I'm studying. I'm trying to fix it so that I'm not vulnerable to anxiety.
Q. I was impressed again. The desire to study and fix things is so healthy and wonderful.
It took me a lot of attempts to get here. If you leave because you don't like what you don't like, nothing will change. In the end, a person must know how to stand alone.
Q. This is the last question. What kind of actor do you want to be.
An irreplaceable actor. an absolutely irreplaceable actor.
Note: rough trans so there might be a lot of error.

INFORME POLICIAL
Informe Confidencial: Desaparición de Jinhee lee
Fecha: 14 de agosto de 2024 Investigador Responsable: Equipo Especial de Casos Privados, Seúl, Corea del Sur
Asunto: Desaparición de Jinhee lee – Caso Confidencial
1. Información General:
Nombre Completo: Jinhee lee

~Stray Kids in Train to Busan~
Bang Chan
Chan was on the train to go visit his mom in Busan
He was smart, so he figured out how to get around the zombies
Even if it put him in danger, he tried to save as many people as possible
He protected Jeongin till the end
He was pretty strong, so he did a lot of the brunt force
Got pretty beat up for it
And when he was shoving everyone in and closing the door, his hand got bitten
Jeongin started crying when he saw it
Chan hugged him and told him that they needed to run to the end of the train and bar the doors
He told Jeongin that if he made it to Busan, to find his mom and tell her that he loved her
Then he held all the zombies back as the glass broke
Giving them enough time to run away
He just wanted to see his mom
Kim Woojin
Woojin was on a business trip
For vocal training maybe
He had his guitar with him
He used it to bash in some zombie’s faces, but in the end he’s too pure
Too kind
His heart couldn’t handle it
He was so sad that Hyunjin threw out the only good people they had
That he let many people die
So he opened the door
And let them kill him and everyone else in that wretched train car
K A R M A
Lee Minho
He was running away from home
His whole family had already gotten turning into zombies
Actually, he was in Daejeon
But he escaped the quarantine because he knew the military had been overtaken
And made it on a train, though he had to fight Hyunjin to get onboard
He punched Hyunjin in the face for almost kicking him off
He was kind of overtaken by grief, but it made him strong
In the end he was going to leave Hyunjin behind
But right when he changed his mind and realized he shouldn’t let anyone else die
It was too late
So he ran away
And he nearly made it
He really did
The last words he said was “I’m sorry”
Seo Changbin
Changbin was on a performance team that was traveling to perform in Daegu
He was pretty anti-social, and super annoyed that Felix came along as well
Since everyone knows that Felix has a huge mega crush on Changbin
The whole team teases them about it
He watched as most of his team got taken down on either sides
And he was trying to get out the door, but Felix got tackled
So he freaking kicked that zombie away and grabbed Felix and they ran to where Hyunjin was holding the door
But the other cars wouldn’t let them in
Until Chan came and opened the door
They were planning to disembark at Daegu, but instead they had to switch trains
And Felix twisted his ankle, so Changbin carried him on his back
He survived for a pretty long time
But then Hyunjin betrayed them and shoved Felix to the zombies
Changbin watched as he was destroyed
And even when Felix turned to him
He couldn’t move
Lee Felix
He wasn’t supposed to come on the train
But he wanted to be with Changbin and cheer him on even if Changbin didn’t want him there
To be honest, he was terrified
He didn’t want to die
So he basically clung to Changbin and tried to fight
Actually he can throw a pretty strong punch
Knocked some zombie clear out of the way, Changbin as his motivation
He never trusted Hyunjin
Hyunjin was mean to him
He wanted to ditch him, but Changbin told him he wasn’t watching more of his team die
So he let Hyunjin stay
Even when Hyunjin threw him to the zombies
He couldn’t quite believe it
It hurt a lot
He tried to tell Changbin to run, but it was too late
He was definitely sorry Hyunjin was able to though
He should have listened to Changbin in the first place, really
Hwang Hyunjin
Hyunjin was also on the team
When it came down to it, he was smart enough to survive on his own
But he thought the way to do that was the not care about other people
Which really is smart but not in this situation
Basically everyone considered him a jerk
Since he lowkey sacrificed the rest of the team
He did help them survive
Though he tried to keep Minho out, Minho got in and broke his nose
Ouch
He managed to convince everyone that Seungmin, Jisung, Chan, and Jeongin were possibly infected
And made everyone throw them out
Even when Woojin opened the door, he managed to escape
He even made it to the final station, but when he was running to the other train
He fell on a train track
And just as he was getting up, with Minho coming to help him
A zombie jumped on his back and bit him
Kim Seungmin
Seungmin was just going because Jeongin couldn’t go alone
As his ‘guardian’
He was very naturally suspicious
Especially when Jisung ran in yelling about the zombie apocalypse
He thought Jisung was crazy
Until they had to run
Then he was forced to trust both Jisung and Chan
Mostly he wanted to protect Jeongin
Even though Chan promised he would also
He was also smart, and helped with them crawling over the zombies
Except when Jisung was getting down he slipped
So Seungmin stayed behind to help him
And beat those zombies up like dang
Then grabbed Jisung’s hand and dragged him away (he actually liked holding Jisung’s hand a lot)
He couldn’t believe Hyunjin would do something like that
But in the end they were safer
When they were at the final changing station, the train trapped him and Jisung underneath, away from Jeongin and Minho
He managed to get Jisung out, but as he was shimmying out, the train fell on top of him completely
It totally crushed him
He made Jisung promise he would get Jeongin safely to Busan
He was glad that he hadn’t died a mindless zombie
A heroic death
Han Jisung
Jisung was on the train with his friends, for a fun day out
But he and his friends were in the car that got infected first
He only escaped because he can run super fast
He was pretty much mentally scarred
But Seungmin and Jeongin and Chan took him in and made sure he was protected
Pretty much the only reason he made it that far was because he had a team, he’s small, and he’s fast
Most of the time he just slipped away instead of fighting
Because we all know Jisung doesn’t have the guts to kill someone
Even if it’s a zombie
He grew kind of attached to Seungmin really
He didn’t want to lose anyone else after his friends and Chan
It broke his heart to leave Seungmin behind, even if he was dead
So he grabbed Jeongin and ran
He had to throw Minho off the train (zombie Minho though)
And nearly got bitten, but Jeongin saved his life
No one else knew how to steer
So he guided them safely to Busan, crying the whole time
Yang Jeongin
Jeongin was with Seungmin, to do some stuff in Busan
He pretty much figured out something fishy was up
But he’s a quiet kid
And he was one of the few who believed Jisung at first
He couldn’t really fight, since he’s only a kid
Mostly he got protected, which he hated
He watched so many people die
Chan, Woojin, Hyunjin, Minho, Seungmin, Changbin, Felix
Everyone really
He tried to be brave for a long time
In the end he kind of broke down
It was because of his quick thinking that they didn’t get shot by the military entering Busan
He sang a trot song through the tears

summary: it is a pain in the ass to have a working relationship with your girlfriend.
settings: established relationship + pre-apocalypse + reader is sooyoung's editor and partner + smoking
you yawn.
your jaw stretches uncomfortably, but the fatigue won't stop. the deadline will come in less than a day, which means you won't have a chance to take it easy until then. because sooyoung has chosen to give you the script only last night, you are now stuck at your office, surrounded by old coffee cups and the essence of a dying person.
you yawn again.
leaning back in your chair, you begin to stretch out your fatigued limbs. your neck feels stiff before you crack it. this at least gives you some brevity, you can't do anything about your eyes, however. your eyedropper has run out yesterday and you have yet to get a chance to restock.
if you aren't tired beyond imagination, you'd have cursed han sooyoung's name. never mind that she has been given an earful from you the day before when she handed you the script. although her subsequent pouting does nothing to soothe your ire, the bags under her eyes gained some sympathy from you.
she has been suffering a little writer's block lately. you received an update on that for an entire month before she handed the writing to you. between her complaining and her attempts to regain her inspiration, you had a busy month tailing her every place in seoul. the two of you even made a trip out of the country to help her with it, but what helped, in the end, was stupidly simple.
a night in with you, watching movies to relax instead of researching for once. if it was not for the relief, you'd have cursed the situation.
and now you're stuck here at the office, two in the morning, working on this new chapter six hours before the deadline. the two of you wouldn't have had any leeway once the date is crossed. sooyoung always wrote at least a few chapters ahead of publication, giving her at least a month of legroom if something like the aforementioned case happened.
you had urged her to take a break, it'd have been fine. she has been writing continuously for long enough that a hiatus would've been okay. but she never listened, it'd have been exasperated if not for her ability to pull a last-minute miracle.
sooyoung is indefinitely lucky that your patience for her never runs too thin. well, except for the times when some of the scenes in her writing make no sense.
your eyes twitch at the sentence you're reading, "what the hell..." you mutter out loud, "is this serious?"
grumpily, you pull out your phone and type a quick message, [ hey, did you mean to write joonhyun killing jinhee? ]
before you can put the phone down, an incoming message bubble pops up, [ yuuuuuuup, make a good twist, isn't it? ]
you groan, [ what the hell is good about this? it comes out of nowhere. ]
the bubble of her message pops up, then deflates, and pops up once more, [ lolol is your brain too tired that you can't even comprehend the foreshadowing? ]
[ i read your notes already, it still doesn't make sense thematic sense. wouldn't it be smarter for her to repent for her betrayal? ] you huff. though the incoming message shows again, nothing comes by. you frown and wait for a few more minutes before putting the phone down with a sigh.
maybe it would make sense with a re-reading. it's two in the morning, anyway, you've been awake for too long. with another sigh, you push up from your seat and decide to go for a smoke break. staying here isn't giving you any help, sooyoung surely isn't helping either.
you step out of your office. most of your co-workers have already returned home for the day. you're the only unfortunate soul whose writer did not cooperate with for today. everyone else has met their deadline and presumably out there partying or wrapping up under a warm blanket. then there is you, miserable, lonesome you.
not even nicotine makes you less morose.
the hallway is colder at this hour of the night. with only a thin shirt on you, the wind blows and makes you shiver. while it wakes you up, the chill also discomforts you. several tries pass before you can light up your cigarette, but your success comes with momentary warmth.
you inhale. warm smokes tickle your throat. you half-contemplate swallowing it, but think better and exhale. it's already killing you, no reason to quicken the process.
"what did i tell you about smoking?!"
suddenly, a weight pulls you down from the neck. "ack!" you yell out at the sudden attack. "what the fuck!"
somebody bears down on you. you thrash wildly in instinct, dropping the cigarette in the process. you grab the perpetrator's arm and throw them down from you. however, sensing your reaction, they hop down from you before you get the chance. you grimace, ready to attack again, but stop once you see their face.
the hammering inside your chest lessens while a deadpan begins to crawl up your face. you roll your eyes backwards and walk away, not even bothering to humour this childish antic again. no matter how cute sooyoung looks when she grins.
"aww, are you mad?" she sidles up to you without even acknowledging the heart attack she almost gave you. "i just wanted to surprise you~"
"you jumped me in the middle of the night in an empty building," you grumble, "what do you think?"
"i think you need to lighten up," she suggests, "i even brought you your favourite food as compensation."
she lifts up the bag which you've overlooked in your anger, it's the same packaging as your favourite gopchang place. immediately, your heart softens. but you continue to glare at her through narrowed eyes, "...why are you out of the house at this hour?"
"i came to visit you, what do you think?" she snorts. "shouldn't you be grateful? not everyone has their girlfriend taking the time out of the day to come by and cheer them up at this dreadful hour of the night~"
you mutter sourly, "yeah, most sane fuckers prefer their girlfriend safe and warm at home this late," then, you glance at the bag, "did you really come here just for that?"
sooyoung pouts, "i'm doing you a favour and you're acting like i'm a nuisance. i just thought you might be tired of working alone so i came by to help, but seeing that you don't need me here—"
she makes the move to turn around and walk away, but even with her calculated delay, you don't do anything until sooyoung begins to take a step. you roll your eyes again, the theatric of your girlfriend can get annoying at times, but you can't say it isn't entertaining.
in one swift move, you take hold of her arm and pull her back. she suppresses her smile, but you can see the glimpse of mischief in her eyes. easily you towards sooyoung and meet your lips with hers, to which she helps by shortening the distance. you can feel her smile on your lips.
and when she takes hold of your collar to pull you closer, you comply.
the kiss is short and sweet, a better greeting than the bickering the two of you have the moment before. you part from her with a weight from your chest lifted, but sooyoung is never one from sentimentality. you'd be foolish to think otherwise.
"your breath stinks of cigarette and coffee, by the way."
"shut up," despite the demand, you laugh. sooyoung raises the bag once more and you snatch it from her, taking her hand into your free one. "did you get any sleep?"
"yeah, slept all day actually, it was already late when i woke up," she rolls her shoulder and squeezes your hand, "i spent the entire evening loafing around until i decided to get you some pick-me-ups. you texted right when i was on my way here, actually."
you lead her back to your office, where the light is off except for the one at your desk. you flip on the switch, brightening the whole room and revealing the kingdom built from messes you and your co-workers have created.
sooyoung knows where you sit. she untangles her hand from you and skips towards your tiny domain. upon her arrival, she plops down on your seat like she owns the thing. you have to tense every nerve on your face to stop your eyes from rolling again. in its place, a wry smile grows. sooyoung wastes no time scuttering towards your computer, browsing the progress of your current work.
editors in your office work with their writers using google doc, which means sooyoung should've had a view of the progress. however, you reckon she has yet to see the thing, with how her day has been.
"ack, why did you edit the potion out?" she begins to scroll in earnest, her mutters of complaints begin even before you reach her. "that part was so good, it's going to set up a twist in thirty chapters."
"because it's out of place," you knock the side of her head with your knuckles, "and i didn't remove it, i only changed the mention of purifying potion to the next chapter. you'd know if you read the note."
"ack, you didn't have to hit me for that," she grumbles, rubbing her head, "wait, wait, what is this comment... 'stop putting shit from hellraiser into the book'? excuse you! that series was a masterpiece."
you nudge her aside, putting the bag down on your desk, "and irrelevant to all the places you referenced it," you say, "just because clive barker was a literary genius doesn't mean you can be one by copying."
she lifts up her nose at you, but crosses her arm and turns away, "you just don't know how to appreciate good art."
"i'm your editor," you drawl, "i'm the one dictating what's good here." although that is not far from the truth, you and sooyoung have debated more than enough about what to keep in the novel and what to remove. it is a never-ending process long as the two of you work together, but it is what it is.
if you don't work well with her, you wouldn't have stayed.
"as if," she sticks out your tongue at you, "i'm the great author here, i'm the one who decides what goes into the story."
"and i'm the one who decides what stays," you ignore her making a face at you in favour of pulling a nearby chair over.
once the food is out, sooyoung is less inclined to bicker with you and more inclined to focus on it. the fervour of which she devours them makes you wonder if she bought these for her or for you. however, after your stomach is full, you cannot care less.
somewhere along the way, sooyoung has thrown her legs over you, perching like a queen in the seat she has stolen from you.
"man, we should go on another vacation after this," she says, patting her full stomach, "maybe somewhere sunny, like bali."
you swat at her leg and chase the dreams away, "we still have work to do for at least another week," you say, "if you want to go on a vacation, then you better finish at least three weeks' worth in advance. or listen to me for once, and announce a hiatus."
"fine," she huffs, "you'll get your manuscript ahead of time and i will go on a hiatus for once. is that better?"
you smile slightly. it's not easy to hide your elation when sooyoung finally listens to you for once, but you conceal it behind the back of your hand. "sure, but we need to overcome the current obstacle before anything else. i need to finish this chapter and you need to start thinking about a proper destination so i can plan beforehand."
to your surprise or lack thereof really, sooyoung launches from her seat and plops down on you with a kiss smack on the cheek. "you better keep your word! i already have an idea in mind for what to do~"
"yes, yes," you sigh, pulling her to sit down on your lap and kissing her jaw, "and as much as i appreciate your company, this is needed in," you raise your hand and your smartwatch comes to life, "roughly less than five hours."
"i'll help!"
"please, no."

I just wanted to know the ending or storyline/plot of your fanfic sinned if that is okay with you 👀 I have been curious eversince the latest update! 🥺
Or are you planning to redo the fic? I really love the storyline 😍
Actually, I recently wrote a fic with the same opening sequence starring Jaehyun 🫣
I don’t know yet whether it will follow the same story line or lie more on the romcom side… but it surely won’t be as long and complicated as Sinned was! This fic was very progressed with more than 40 chapters already and I actually did map out the entire thing. A dive into my drive made me stumble over my notes as well, so I’m just gonna put them under the cut.
This is from at least 8 years ago and I don’t even know whether it all makes sense, I still hope it will help you find a bit closure 🫠😇
March the year prior: Junseo met Ahri for the first time
Early winter: Luhan needs money for the emergency operation, asks Jihoo
Jihoo gives him, vengeance
Junseo joined, because he wanted to be with Ahri, used Jiyoun because he knew she’d do anything for him.
Jihoo only used Junseo and never wanted to give Ahri to him. He wanted to get rid of Luhan and Ahri from the very beginning.
Junseo kicked Jiyoun out after he changed sides (when Ahri rejected him, after the sports event), but she continued, because she was mad that, even if Ahri treated him like that, he’s still after her and wanted revenge.
Jiyoun is in love with Junseo and joined because he told her they could be together if she’d help him to break apart Luhan and Ahri (drugged Ahri at the party (wanted her to make out with someone else), stole Luhan’s money), but even when he found out what a slut Ahri was, he was willing to still stay by her side, which made Jiyoun mad, because Ahri is always seen as an angel.
Ahri knows one of the voices, the female one, Junseo tells Luhan Ahri is threatened, calls him alter and reveals him as the culprit whereas Ahri knows who the real one is (Jiyoun + Jinhee), had begun to work against them, The scribbling on the board was there to make Ahri trust him. He sent Ahri the threats before, but he got so shocked that she still got some because he begged Jiyoun to stop it after the scribbling on the board, she deceived him. He can’t tell anything because he’s pretending to be on their side to save ahri.
Jihoo and Jiyoun hate Luhan because he ruined his relationship with Minhee which is why he wants to ruin L-A’s relationship too. “I despise you, Luhan. And I despise her too.” Since Jiyoun is in love with Luhan, he helps to bring Luhan and Ahri apart and at the same time take revenge for his former relationship. Junseo was in this too since he wanted Ahri (knows Jihoo as well) but sees that he doesn’t have a chance and changed sides. Jihoo had despised Ahri too since she had always been the spoilt kid and her father had never really paid attention to her.
Luhan finds out that Junseo is the culprit by finding the messages on his phone but it was Jiyoun later on who took over it after he had changed the sides and Ahri knows this.
Ahri breaks off with Lu Han after Junseo told her everything (also that Jihoo knows that they’re together). They make a plan together that night and don’t tell Luhan to not cause him more problems. Also Ahri doesn’t tell Luhan it’s her step brother because she knows he would take even more care of him.
Luhan meets Junseo at the party and asks him but Junseo tells him nothing and Luhan thinks he’s Ahri’s new boyfriend because she’s fed up with his fucked up life. Like Luhan wanted to protect Ahri with not telling her everything, she now does the same to protect him.
Behind his back, Ahri collects money and asks his friends and Luhan is unaware of it. Through this, he finds out that she still loves him. They sleep together, though Ahri pretends to regret it. Luhan thanks her anyway.
Jiyoun, who drives the car, tells Ahri everything but Ahri stays quiet the entire time and in the end, Ahri is like “I know.” And points the gun at her. “Now pull over, bitch, or I will blow your brain away.”
On doomsday Luhan tells her to stay home but she goes anyway. Luhan should just worry about money while Ahri manages the rest.
Ahri’s father appears and clears it up.
Last scene: Ahri graduates high school a year later than everyone else and Luhan waits for her as she holds her graduation speech.

The meeting room is abnormally quiet when Somin enters. It could be due to the newly empty seat on the right side of the long table, but not even a whisper hangs on the lips of the remaining mages.
Somin’s mouth doesn’t even curl at their submission. As much as she would like not to show it, the failures of the man who used to sit on that empty seat affected her. Not because she felt particularly fond of him – though she will admit she was sad to see High Mage Jung’s disgrace and demotion, or simply Mage Jung now – but because it left her with a one less competent head at her table.
At the head of the room, she turns, eyes roving over the heads bowed in respect (or is it fear? Pawns and kings, does it even matter?). Her lips curl, but not in joy. In disgust.
One gave her a plan that fell to pieces. Another let a powerful Onyx mage escape from his clutches. Three more on three separate occasions were unable to track and capture the thieves running around and stealing her jewels, with one of them lacking the wits to save her compatriot from the knife of that dratted prince. And when Somin finds out who let it slip that the ruby was to be held at the gray mage’s shrine…
The loss of one semi-intelligent mind means much in this room full of bumbling idiots.
Somin takes a deep breath. High Mage Jung was not infallible either. He failed to anticipate the revolt of the prisoners entrusted under his care, failed to prevent the theft of one of the last three jewels. All because he was sleeping.
She allows a slight smirk to cross her lips. His mistakes will not go unpunished, at least. One of his daughters already awaits retribution for her father under this very palace.
“Sit,” Somin says, purposely embedding the single word with ice.
Everyone sits. Somin does, too, smoothing her full skirts under the table as she tries to hide hands that shake with anger. “It has come to my attention,” she snarls, voice dripping acid, “that this is a room full of failures.”
Several mages flinch. The others remain still, even Lee Minho, who stares at the wooden surface in front of him as though it will give him the answers to the world.
At least Somin can count on his silence, now. Much better than his inability to shut up from before.
“You are lucky that I have a brain as well,” she hisses. “I do wonder what they teach you as mages, if not a single one of you could put together a plan that would not fail on every single level. Even without your specialized training, between dividing my troops and evading Onyx attack, I was able to come up with a plan to lure that insufferable band of jewel thieves into the open.”
Silence.
Somin tuts. “None of you will ask your queen what she intends to do?”
Bom clears her throat quietly. Her stomach wound has long healed, but she still hunches over the table like it never went away. “What is your plan, Your Majesty?”
Such a good puppet. Somin almost wants to pat her head, despite the fact that the mage is at least ten years her senior. This is why Bom sits at her table. It is a table meant for those more powerful than she, but Somin needs someone blindly loyal to her cause to remain close by, no matter how dull-witted.
“We are winning the war,” she starts, allowing a slight smile to curve her lips. “This gives me leave to bring some of our generals back to the capital for, ah, a respite of sorts. I’m sure many are eager to pledge themselves to the new queen and her king, just as all of you were.”
Mouths tighten. Faces whiten. Somin represses a smirk. A gentle reminder of what she holds over their heads never hurts. “I will host a competition of dual blades,” she announces. “It is an art widely practiced among the noble and royal classes, even in some of the common pawn circles. Anyone will be free to join, and the winner will receive the onyx stone as a gift. Spoils of war.” Her smile widens. “Who could resist?”
Minho’s eyes shift from the table to her. “You believe the Onyx prince will fall for this obvious trap?”
Somin returns his gaze. “You believe he won’t?” She laughs. “The prince needs this stone. Even if he has the other four, he has no way of completing the crown unless he somehow takes this one too. He may realize it is a trap, but what other choice does he have?”
Mage Choi Jinhee, at the end of the table, raises her head. “Will you use the real stone?”
A sigh leaves Somin’s lips. Does she really need to spell everything out for them? “No,” she snaps. Her gaze turns to a certain cat-eyed mage, whose mouth thins into a line. “The real stone will be left with the crown in a place no one can access but I.” She sneers. “Need I remind you of what happened last time I listened to such foolish advice?”
Jinhee falls silent, but Minho opens his mouth. Somin curses internally. “The prince is of the Onyx bloodline,” he says, bravely (or foolishly – she’s more inclined to believe that) meeting her stare. “He will sense whether or not the jewel is real. And if it is true that a mage travels with them –”
“Which is why it will only be revealed on the last day of competition, when the winner has fought their way to the finish,” she cuts him off. “No one will see it before then, so no one will know it is fake. The prince will fight until that day, at which point he will be arrested in front of all spectators so they can see just who has managed to trespass into our kingdom during a time of war.”
“How are you so sure the prince will make it to the last day?” Minho challenges.
Somin actually laughs at that. “Have you ever watched the Onyx prince at swordplay?”
A shake of the head. Somin’s smile turns into a smirk. “I have.” She leans forward, staring Minho in the eye. “When I tell you he is skilled, I do not lie. He was taught by Wang throughout his adolescence, and he specialized in it when he underwent his knight training.” Her smirk deepens. “I will not make the mistake of underestimating him.”
Minho’s lips twitch. Somin can’t tell if it’s a result of annoyance or a smirk, and that frustrates her. “It is sometimes just as crucial not to overestimate an opponent, Your Majesty.”
Somin scoffs. “I do not overestimate him,” she snaps. “If he loses early on, we will only arrest him earlier. Perhaps it will not draw the crowds I would have liked, but as long as he is executed the next day and leaves the Onyx Kingdom without an heir to the king’s crown, it does not matter.”
No one argues with that. Silence falls over the room once more.
A smirk creeps up Somin’s lips, and this time, she allows it to show. “Now, then.” She leans forward. “Who will be tasked with creating the fake?”
. . . . .
Juyeon isn’t stupid. A contest in swordplay offering the last crown jewel as the winner’s prize can’t be anything but an obvious trap.
Personally, he feels slightly offended. Does Somin really think he’s that dumb? He might not be Jisoo with her mind for battle tactics and foreign affairs, but Juyeon has a brain that he often utilizes well, despite what Kevin sometimes likes to say.
(No matter what the amethyst heir says, Juyeon will maintain that cutting himself on a rose bush is far less stupid than setting an entire hill on fire. At least his wounds were healed. As far as he knows, half of that hill is still blackened.)
But the longer he looks at the poster Jacob brought back from the town square, the more it becomes obvious just how well-wrought this trap is. It may be obvious, yes, but more likely than not, Somin’s accounted for this. She has rarely been one to underestimate her enemies, after all. Which means that she expects him to come, knowing it’s a ploy to catch him.
Juyeon swears, throwing the poster to the ground. Of course he’ll come. Of course he will. He may have four of the crown jewels, but he needs the last one. The other four mean nothing if he can’t complete the crown.
So he has to join this contest.
He looks at Jacob and Kevin, both of whom stare at the piece of paper on the dusty ground with similarly grim expressions. Looking at them, a familiar sensation of unease grows in his mind, a tingling suspicion that someone is missing.
Which is impossible. Yes, Sunwoo left a hole in the group that can’t be filled, not even by Jacob, but this feeling is something different from the grief that still grips his heart every time he remembers the death. And then he inevitably remembers knives ripping through flesh, blood pooling on the ground, watching the life drain out of Mage Han’s eyes next to Sunwoo’s already blank expression –
Enough. Juyeon pulls himself out of his thoughts before he can spiral. This feeling isn’t the same as that of Sunwoo’s absence. It’s more like someone or multiple people are supposed to be here, helping him, which makes no sense. Hwanwoong and the others never could have stayed, and Juyeon certainly wasn’t going to drag High Mage Jung along. Jacob might really have committed murder then.
So no one can be missing. No one.
But ever since Juyeon woke up, thorn wounds completely healed after a dream of ruby roses and pain, he knows someone is. And he’s pretty sure he knows who – the shade who healed him, whose face he almost saw but didn’t because his body decided to wake up right then and there.
Which doesn’t make any castles-damned sense.
“Someone has to go.” Kevin’s voice breaks Juyeon out of his thoughts, brings him back to the present problems that have nothing to do with unnamed shades and roses. “And Juyeon’s the best at swordplay. Especially dual blades.”
Juyeon winces. It’s true, he can handle a sword and a dagger extremely well. He just much prefers the stability of a single one.
Besides, dual blades are an Ivory citizen’s weapon of choice. Normally this wouldn’t pose problems – royalty of both kingdoms, especially those who take the knight’s oath, often learn to wield multiple types of weapons – but even wearing white makes Juyeon want to crawl out of his skin, now. Using an Ivory weapon instead of his own?
A grimace crosses his face that he can’t shove away.
“It could be a fake,” Jacob interjects. “In fact, it probably is – why would Somin use the real stone, especially when we already have the other four?”
“Even if it’s a fake, we could get something from it,” Kevin argues. “Traces of magic, maybe. A mage would have had to create it, so couldn’t we track the traces again?”
Jacob frowns. “That took so long last time, though.” He sighs. “I’m not saying we have other choices. But if we could figure out something else…?”
Juyeon shakes his head. “I don’t think there’s another option.” His mouth thins as he presses his lips together. “She wants me to come, that much is obvious. Somin watched me practice when she used to visit the kingdom. She’ll expect me to get to the end of the contest, even against other highly-trained soldiers and generals.”
“You could just be being pig-headed and arrogant,” Kevin says, lips raised in a teasing half-smile. “What if she doesn’t actually think you’ll make it, huh? You have that much faith in your abilities?”
“You –” Juyeon punches Kevin in the arm, unable to force back the smile growing on his face. “You’re one to talk. Didn’t Wang call you one of the most pathetic students he’d ever had?”
Kevin sniffs. “I throw knives better than you ever will.”
“Are you two done puffing your chests around?” Jacob interrupts, cutting Juyeon off from arguing further (which he really couldn’t, anyway – Kevin has the best aim of anyone he’s ever met). He’s smiling too, though, and a wave of gratitude washes over Juyeon at Kevin’s ability to lighten up the mood. But the smile slowly disappears as he opens his mouth again. “Juyeon, if you’re going to do this, you can’t show up with your face on display. Attending the contest is bad enough, but parading around in the open is even worse.”
“Dust masks.” Juyeon turns to Kevin. “Can you make something that’ll hide my face well enough?”
He nods. “Just give me a day, I’ll have it ready. In the meantime, you need to somehow find a pair of dual blades to practice with.”
Well, that’s an issue. Juyeon’s just about to frown when Jacob points to a few lines on the poster he hadn’t read yet. “Blades will be provided so no contestant has an unfair advantage.”
Relief, then anxiety fill Juyeon’s chest. “Which means I’ll have to make another appearance to sign up for this and pick out my size.”
Kevin’s lips thin. “Show up first while wearing the mask. It’s all you can do.”
“And if someone asks?”
“Then say the roads are too dusty.” Jacob coughs. “Which they are.”
It’s a bad plan, not well thought out and far from foolproof, but if worst comes to worst, Juyeon has long legs and knows the capital well enough to get around and maybe hide.
“Well.” Juyeon sighs. “Anything’s better than setting a hill on fire.”
“Queens,” Jacob mutters. “We really need to stop using that as a baseline to judge our bad plans.”
. . . . .
Kevin follows Juyeon to competition registration. It isn’t too hard to stay inconspicuous among the masks most people are wearing, but Kevin keeps his head lowered and gaze alert all the same. It wouldn’t do for anyone to catch them before Juyeon even enters his first swordfight.
But it’s hard when dust keeps flying into his face with every step he takes. Even when he deliberately tries to place his foot down with as little force as possible, it floats into the air with a deceptive grace that itches his nose and makes tears spring in his eyes.
Queens, it was never this bad all the other times Kevin visited, and he’s traveled here a lot over the past few years. Under the previous queen, the roads, though still dusty – it’s inevitable, especially in the dryer months – were much cleaner.
It’s not just that. Even here, in the square, the usual bustle of chatter and cheer sounds so much more subdued than he remembers. When he was younger, he and Changmin and Juyeon would come here on their visits to wreak as much havoc as their tiny bodies could handle. They’d get caught, eventually, but people were always up for a joke or a prank.
Now, though there’s still noise, the level is nowhere near where it used to be. Everyone’s face looks drawn, taut, a little wary, even, as they exchange coins and goods.
An unpleasant tingle runs down Kevin’s back. The current queen is probably too focused on the war at hand to care for her citizens. A scowl crosses his face as he thinks of Somin sitting high and mighty in her palace or wherever she is, directing people to do the dirty work for her.
One of his angry feet kicks a cloud of dust into the air. Kevin starts coughing again. Pawns and kings, it couldn’t get much worse than this, could it?
Just ahead, Juyeon approaches a large white building. Kevin stops where he is, standing idly by a small store as Juyeon flashes him a look that he returns. He disappears into the doors.
Now all there is to do is wait.
Heart in his throat, Kevin does his best to look casual as he lingers in the town square, vaguely gazing at several of the stalls as he tries not to catch anyone’s attention. No meeting eyes, no staring, no looking interested –
“Excuse me?”
Castling queens.
Kevin braces himself, expecting some random Ivory citizen to maybe ask him why he’s loitering around without buying anything. An excuse pops readily onto his tongue as he turns, a slight, wary smile on his face to mimic those of the others prattling around the square –
In the name of the Board and all that is holy –
It takes all of Kevin’s effort not to widen his eyes, not to curse, not to show anything in the face of Lee Jaehyun, a boy he once used to know, a boy he used to play around with on his visits to the Ivory Kingdom. As they grew older and took on different duties, they saw each other less – in fact, the last time they talked was probably a couple years ago – but there’s no mistaking it. This is Lee Jaehyun, the youngest general of the ivory army, knighted when he was just sixteen.
Juyeon himself wasn’t knighted until seventeen, and he’s one of the best fighters Kevin knows. If Jaehyun is here…
Smile. Breathe. Change your voice. Kevin prays the disinterested expression on his face from before hasn’t left as he looks at Jaehyun with veiled curiosity, heart pounding. Thank all the higher orders that he’s wearing a mask. “Yes?”
“You just seemed a little lost.” Jaehyun smiles, though it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. Is it just Kevin’s paranoia, or does he look suspicious? “I wondered if you needed directions somewhere.”
A brief laugh forces itself out of Kevin’s throat, stilted and deep and nothing like his normal snorts and giggles. Good – even less chance of Jaehyun recognizing him. “I don’t, but thank you.” He jerks his head toward the registration building. “Just waiting for a friend.”
Jaehyun nods. “Not signing up yourself, then?”
“Oh, no.” This time, Kevin doesn’t need to lie. “I don’t have the skill to compete against generals of the kingdom.” He cocks his head, feigning interest. “Are you?”
The smile on Jaehyun’s unmasked face tightens, but he nods. “Yes, I am.” He laughs, short and forced. “Who wouldn’t want the glory?”
“Glory,” Kevin repeats, trying to decipher the unreadable look Jaehyun wears. “Is that what matters, then?”
His tone must have been more accusatory than he meant, because Jaehyun’s eyes narrow slightly. Kevin curses internally, about to backtrack, but Jaehyun has already opened his mouth to speak again. “To some,” he says, pose deceivingly relaxed. “Why? What do you think matters more?”
Kevin’s heart is ready to pound out of his chest with anxiety. Sweat beads on his forehead and under his ivory dust mask as his mind races for a neutral answer. Jaehyun just waits, face impassive.
“Care,” he finally replies. “If I had someone under my care, I would put them before anything else, even glory.”
It’s true. He doesn’t need to lie about how he feels about Jacob. About Juyeon.
About Sunwoo.
Pain stabs his chest, pain that he does his best not to show as Jaehyun nods appraisingly. “I agree,” he says, surprisingly. “We are lucky to have a king who cares for us in the way you describe.”
Kevin tries not to raise his eyebrows too high at Jaehyun’s choice of words. King. Not queen.
Does this mean Jaehyun doesn’t care for the queen, either?
It could be. Jaehyun never exactly wanted to play with Somin when they were kids, even though he regularly got into shenanigans with the former queen. Even though she’s ascended the throne, it’s possible that the feelings remained.
With that, it crosses Kevin’s mind to reveal himself and enlist Jaehyun as an ally. But there’s too much to risk with that. They’re so close to completing the crown, so close – they can’t afford a single mistake. Besides, Kevin only has guesses to go by. He doesn’t know anything concrete about Jaehyun that’s recent enough to mean anything.
And also, Juyeon’s just exited the building, two new blades in hand. There’s no time.
“There seems to be a line forming,” Kevin remarks idly. “You should probably take your place before you’re here all morning.”
Jaehyun glances back, almost uninterested, before nodding. “Probably.” He sighs. “Well, it was nice meeting you…”
Queens. Kevin needs to think of a name. “Jihoon,” he spits out, wincing internally at how similar it is to Juyeon’s fake name (seriously, Jiyoon and Jihoon? Come on, Kevin), but it’s too late to retract it because Jaehyun’s already nodding.
“Jihoon.” Jaehyun smiles. “I’m Jaehyun.”
I know.
Kevin doesn’t say that, though, just returns the nod. “Good luck, Jaehyun.”
He means it. Because though Jaehyun might be good, Juyeon has skill, too. And he has something else that Jaehyun doesn’t.
Desperation.
And as horrible a feeling it is to have, Kevin knows with a grim certainty that Juyeon’s going to need to channel as much of it as he can.
. . . . .
When Juyeon learns the Lee Jaehyun is going to be competing in this tournament, he almost wants to give up right then and there. He may be good, but Jaehyun is a prodigy. There’s a reason why he was knighted so early and rose through the army ranks so quickly. His participation basically cuts Juyeon’s chances of winning in half.
Never mind that his chances already weren’t very high.
And then there’s the fact that Jaehyun spoke with Kevin, singled him out of an entire town square as someone to talk to. Though Kevin says he’s pretty sure Jaehyun didn’t recognize him or he probably would’ve said something, Juyeon can’t shake it off that easily. Jaehyun’s smart. He isn’t a general for nothing. If he talked to Kevin, he suspected something. Why else would he give up his position in line for a chat?
A cursory scan of the day’s duels brings Juyeon slight relief. He isn’t fighting against Jaehyun – in fact, he’s in a completely different bracket – which means that he might just make it to the last day if no one catches him. Might.
And then he’ll have to fight Jaehyun, or whoever managed to beat Jaehyun. Though to be honest, if there’s someone else at the top, Juyeon might back out right then and there. Jaehyun is that good.
But if it’s Jaehyun he ends up fighting, there’s a much higher chance of recognition. Which is also not good.
Taking a shaky breath, Juyeon readjusts the dust mask covering his face, trying to drown out the noises of the growing crowd as he steps into the arena. Kevin’s talented fingers have come into play again for the simple piece of cloth, sewing it tight enough around his mouth and nose that it won’t come loose while giving him enough air to breathe. If no one looks too closely, they won’t root him out.
Hopefully.
Juyeon breathes in. Breathes out. Dust swirls around his feet as he walks forward to meet his opponent. Already he’s forgotten the name – it wasn’t anybody he recognized, he remembers that much – and from the stuttering gaze on the boy’s face, he gathers that it won’t be too difficult to beat him this round.
He’s right. The boy – whatever his name is – has some skill but not enough, not the type that Juyeon’s honed over years of training in multiple forms of swordplay. Within minutes, he disarms his opponent, two blades thudding to the dusty ground, and his sword rises to rest against his throat.
Cheers rise as Juyeon lowers his arm, accepting the boy’s hand in a firm shake. Vaguely, he hears his fake name being announced as the winner, but already he’s slipping into one of the tents, exiting as fast as he can, then disappearing into the crowd, unnoticed.
He doesn’t find Kevin or Jacob. They said they’d be here but didn’t tell Juyeon where for fear of accidentally giving them away with a stray glance. Instead, he finds a relatively empty space at the junction between two streets, sits down, and closes his eyes to rest.
The afternoon passes in the same manner, then the next day. Juyeon almost loses his fourth set – he doesn’t recognize the move his opponent uses and it throws him off-kilter when he loses his dagger – but in the end, he manages to flip both blades out of the other’s hand with a wild sweep of his sword that sends the audience into a frenzy. Stonily, he ignores his opponent’s glare and the way she tries to crush his hand with her grip, though his heart pounds for hours after.
Two days gone. One day left.
The third afternoon, Kevin sends him off with a face whiter than usual, fingers trembling at his sides. Jacob doesn’t look much better, huddled into his red cloak as he wishes Juyeon luck. Both put on a brave face, trying to smile as Juyeon slides the blades into his belt, but their worry is obvious.
He can’t blame them. His heart feels like it’s about to beat out of his chest. Because today, Juyeon’s going to be in the most danger he’s been throughout his two short weeks in the capital.
The crowds will be bigger than ever. There’s a far smaller chance of Kevin and Jacob being able to whisk him out of a tight situation. Somin herself will preside over the final duel as he fights beneath her throne. Well, not her throne because that’s a huge piece of white marble and ivory that can’t easily be carried out of the palace, but she’ll be there.
And to top things off…
A familiar figure stands in the center of the arena, blades already drawn. Even from this distance, confidence radiates from his body, from the slight smile on his face and the easy way he holds his weapons.
Juyeon swallows.
He’s fighting Lee Jaehyun.
. . . . .
Anxiety can’t even begin to cover how Jacob feels as he watches Juyeon enter the arena. Shouts, alternate cheers and boos, follow his footsteps forward into the center of the large, dusty plain.
Jacob doesn’t join in. Neither does Kevin. They only watch silently from a far edge of the crowds, fists clenched so tightly that his nails start biting crescents into his palms.
Pawns and kings. He closes his eyes, takes a deep breath. If he feels this anxious, how must Juyeon feel, standing under watch of his biggest enemy, facing one of the best (or possibly the best) swordsmen in the two kingdoms, knowing there’s a very sizable chance that someone will either root him out or he’ll simply lose?
Juyeon doesn’t seem to show any worry or anxiety as he tosses his sheaths away, but maybe that’s just because Jacob is so far away. He wishes he was closer, but in the event of things gone awry, he and Kevin need to be able to escape as fast as possible.
If he was alone, standing closer might be an option. He doesn’t need a door just to shift on his own. But with Kevin here, he does.
And he can’t exactly create a door in the middle of a crowd.
A horn sounds. Jacob’s head jerks up.
Kevin’s hand finds his as the first crash of metal rings through the air.
They fight fast. All Jacob can see are flashes of silver, the afternoon sun glinting off the blades and nearly blinding him several times. Two blurred figures weave in and out of each other, barely distinguishable from this far away, and try as Jacob might to pay attention, sometimes he loses sight of Juyeon’s dark hair in the clouds of dust that whirl up from their feet.
Blades clash. Cheers sound. Jacob can barely hear anything over the roar of blood in his ears, can barely feel a thing besides Kevin’s hand clenching his in a death grip. Vaguely, as Jaehyun nearly lands a hit on Juyeon, who just manages to spin away, Jacob wonders if his blood will still be circulating in his fingers by the time this match is over.
One strike blocked, a feint parried, another slash dodged. The duel drags on and on – Kevin mutters something about sundown coming before it’s over and Jacob almost laughs, hysterical and wild with all the adrenaline coursing through his veins – and then –
Juyeon knocks the sword out of Jaehyun’s hand, sending it flying high into the air.
A scream builds in Jacob’s throat as Kevin lets out a pained wheeze. Maybe, just maybe, Jacob thinks, Juyeon has a chance to win this. Castling queens, he needs to –
But Jaehyun catches the blade.
He catches it.
Jacob nearly falls over entirely as the general resumes the fight, barely looking like he’s broken a sweat. Juyeon stumbles and Jacob almost releases his previous scream. He manages to regain his balance, though Jacob can tell even from here that Juyeon’s shaken.
Who wouldn’t be, after all? No one could blame Juyeon after that sort of stunt.
But he can’t afford to be shaken. He needs to move, to fight, to win this for the stupid onyx stone that’s probably a fake anyway because they need all the information they can get, even if it means putting the Onyx prince himself in a direct line of danger –
The dagger falls out of Juyeon’s hand. Jaehyun kicks it, sending the blade skittering across the arena.
Kevin’s nails begin cutting into Jacob’s skin.
Juyeon continues the fight. He’s already fought and won against another girl who managed to disarm his dagger hand, Jacob knows, so there’s a chance, a tiny chance that he could still make this. As sweat stings his open eyes, he prays, he prays to every higher order of the two kingdoms, pawns and kings, please let Juyeon win this –
But Jaehyun isn’t the girl from before. And with the first trip, the first tiny stumble over a stone or a rut in the ground, the general flips the sword out of Juyeon’s hand. It falls to the ground in a cloud of dust.
The tip of a blade inserts itself under Juyeon’s chin.
If you enjoyed, please don’t forget to reblog and leave a comment to tell me what you thought! Thank you for reading and have a lovely day <3
(1 reblog = 1 prayer for juyeon he needs it)

NEW PATH !
SUMMARY :: In which Jiwon fights for his team. CHARACTERS :: Noh Jiwon , Jeon Sunwoo , Jang Jinhwan , Han Donghan , Nico Matsui WORDS :: 2.0K WARNINGS :: fighting ( but like not really , just to be safe really ) ( if i missed anything let me know ! )
Jiwon took a deep breath, rubbing his now sweaty palms onto his pants as he looked back at the door in front of him. He knew this was coming, ever since their last day of promotions, when they walked away empty handed yet again. He knew their time was coming and that Banana Culture just had to pull the trigger and actually disband them.
Jiwon had shoved himself into his work in the days following the end of their promotions. First, he had tried to make new songs, hoping that if the company heard some promising tracks, they would think again about letting them go, but it felt like every track he made just felt more wrong each time he tried. Once he gave up on making music, he looked more into other companies around them, hoping that he could find something, anything that would let him stay together with the group of people he had grown so fond of. He scrolled and scrolled, debating with himself on emailing some places when Sunwoo burst through one of the practice room doors, telling him that enough was enough and pulling him all the way back to their dorm. Sunwoo had thrown Jiwon’s tired body onto his bed, sitting on top of him until he had slipped into one of the best sleeps he had in a while.
It was all nice until he woke up to a message from their manager, telling him that the CEO wanted to see him, his heart sinking instantly in his chest at the conversation he knew was going to come. He had slipped out of bed that morning, careful not to disturb anyone in the dorm in the early hours of the morning. It was almost peaceful walking around the dorm with nobody milling about and he couldn’t help but hope that the rest of the boys would sleep peacefully, without any of the stress Jiwon was currently facing.
That brought Jiwon to standing in front of their CEO’s door, wondering how he could wiggle their way out of disbandment, how he could keep this group going as long as he wanted. He let out one last sigh, knocking on the door with a firm knock that surprised him. He waited until he heard a small, deep voice on the other side telling him to come in, before he made his way into the room, instantly sitting down in front of the man.
The older man let out a sigh, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back in his chair. “I’m sure you already know why you’re here,” he sighed, looking Jiwon straight in the eye. “We’re disbanding Replay and we’re going to have a formal meeting with everyone later, but I wanted to give you the rundown on how this would work before we move forward.”
There was a pause as the man waited for Jiwon to nod or show any sort of approval. It was dead silent in the room, but Jiwon had never felt like it was so loud before. He started at his hands for a moment, biting his lip to keep him from saying something, no matter how much he wanted to. The man in front of him sighed lightly, about to continue, but Jiwon couldn’t hold it back anymore.
“Sir,” Jiwon’s voice broke out into the silence, much louder and stronger than he thought it would come out, considering how scared he was inside. He watched as his CEO’s eyes widened at the sudden intrusion, but Jiwon continued before he could stop him. “With all due respect, I think it would be a mistake to disband our group.”
“Jiwon, you’re group hasn’t been gaining much attention,” the man started, looking frustrated. “We sent you guys onto Road to Kingdom, hoping it would gain you guys attention, but you didn’t win, so nothing happened. We can’t keep wasting money on a project that isn’t giving us anything in return.”
“But we’re getting bigger each comeback!” Jiwon protested, looking into the older man’s eyes as he raised his voice lightly. “I’ve seen the album sales and we’ve been nominated for number one multiple times! If you would just give us a few more comebacks I’m sure we could get bigger!”
“The answer’s no, Jiwon, and that’s final.” The patronizing tone of the man’s voice only served to frustrate Jiwon even more.
“If you won’t let us continue, then let us find someone else that will,” Jiwon’s voice was deep as he glared at the man in front of him.
The man barked out an ugly laugh, throwing his head back as if it was the funniest thing in the world. “And who would want to take in a group like you? No wins, bad sales, barely any production credits? You guys have nothing going for yourself as far as I’m concerned.”
“One month,” Jiwon said, closing his eyes and breathing through his nose to calm him down. “Give us one month to look for a new place, if we don’t get it by then, then you can disband the group.”
The man smirked, leaning forward. “Fine, one month and when you don’t find anyone to take in your group, you guys will disband without any more of a fuss, got it?”
“Yes,” Jiwon said, getting up from his seat and leaving the room, without another glance back at his CEO.
“We’re doing what now?” Donghan’s voice filled the small dorm, his eyes wide with confusion and his mouth hung open. The other boys stared back in similar states of shock, though Donghan had always been the more vocal of the younger members of the group.
“We’re going to find another company to take us in,” Jiwon shrugged simply, looking over to Sunwoo to see if he was as confused about the situation as the rest of them. He didn’t seem to be, but Jiwon noticed the small, scared look on his face, unsure of what to make of the situation.
“And how exactly are we going to do that?” Jinhwan said, his voice much more quiet than normal. He had his legs pulled up to his chest and his long black hair was messily thrown into a ponytail, or as much of one as he could get. He was clearly worried, and Jiwon wanted to do nothing more than to console the younger one.
“We email companies and just hope that they take a look at us?” Sunwoo suggested, causing all eyes to turn to him. “Look, I know it’s not ideal, but I’d rather do anything than actually disband.”
All the other boys nodded, looking more solem than when they started this conversation. “How do we know that the companies will even look at anything we send?” Nico’s soft voice broke the small silence, asking the one question that they were all wondering.
“We don’t” Jiwon shrugged, running a hand through his hair. This was going to be a lot harder than he thought, but Jiwon was determined to make it through and keep this group together.
“I can talk to some of my friends from when I trained at SM and see if they know anything,” Jinhwan suggested. “Worse come to worse, we could always look at Jinhee’s company.”
“That would be great, Jinhwan,” Jiwon said, his voice tired as he rested his hands on the back of his neck, the worry finally starting to catch up with him.
“Why don’t we take a break, it’s been a long day,” Sunwoo interjected, seeing how Jiwon was close to losing it, knowing when he needed to stop Jiwon from going too far. “We can pick this back up later.”
The boys nodded, getting up from their position on the floor and making their way into their rooms, leaving the oldest two alone.
“I’m worried,” Jiwon said after a moment, not looking at the younger man next to him. “What if we don’t get anywhere to pick us up?”
“Then we’ll disband anyway, you’re at least giving us another shot we wouldn’t have had.”
Jiwon had to admit that Sunwoo was right, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that it would be his fault if nobody picked them up. The thought kept playing over and over in him mind and he couldn’t help but worry.
“Whatever happens, you know it’s not like we won’t see each other again, right?”
“Will we, though?” Jiwon questioned, turning to finally look at Sunwoo. “Yeah, you and me will still see each other, and we can probably see Jinhwan and Donghan too, but Nico will probably move back home, what’s keeping him here other than being an idol? He can go back to his youtube channel and we would barely ever see him again. I just don’t want to lose any of them.”
“I know,” Sunwoo nodded, his face falling slightly at Jiwon’s words. “But, we’ll make it work, okay?”
Jiwon just nodded, not trusting himself to actually talk with the lump that was beginning to form in his throat. He just wanted everything to turn out okay.
It was two weeks before they heard back from anyone that they had sent anything out to, and all the boys could feel their heart start racing with excitement before Jiwon opened the email. They could also feel their hearts drop at the sight of the rejection.
That one was only the first, but many more rejections kept flooding in after the first one, making the boys less and less hopeful as the days went on. Slowly, every company they had reached out to came back with the same answer. No.
There was only one company left and all the boys knew it was a long shot. P Nation. It had started out as a joke between the boys about how Psy was constantly picking up stray singers and that maybe, just maybe, he would actually look into them just a bit. Then, Jinhwan mentioned how he used to train with one of the promising trainees back under SM and how he could probably give him a call and see what could happen, if he could plant any seeds in any higher ups mind.
They all knew it would probably be a no, but seeing the email rolling in had all the boys at the edge of their seats, waiting for Jiwon to open it and read out the email. Jiwon looked around at the boys one last time before he took a deep breath and opened the email. He scanned it quickly, not wanting to read it to the boys if it was bad news, but he couldn’t help teh way that his eyes lit up at the words.
“We got in?” Nico asked, noticing the way their leader’s eyes lit up, his smile bright and hopeful.
Jiwon smiled. “They want to meet us!” His voice was bright and happy and he could see the way all the other boys lit up at the words.
Screams filled the small dorm as all the boys jumped up, hugging each other tightly as if they had just won the lottery and in a way they had. Jiwon couldn’t stop the smile from spreading into a big, full-blown, teethy smile. They could say no still, but Jiwon couldn’t find it in him to care about that right now. Right now they had hope, they were safe for another moment and they might have a new label to take them in. It wasn’t perfect, but for Jiwon it felt as close to perfect as it could get in that moment, and Jiwon was prepared to savor every moment of it.
