‘Akohekohe (Palmeria dolei)

Size (Weight/Length)- 18 cm

Diet- Nectar

Cool Facts- The ‘akohekohe is the largest honeycreeper species found on the Hawaiian island of Maui. They specialize on the uniquely shaped flowers throughout the tropical highlands. The distinct crest of feathers at the top of their beak aids in pollination when they stick their heads deep inside flowers to lick at the nectar. ‘Akohekohe are relatively aggressive and chase away other honeycreeper species in their territory. Unfortunately, alongside many other honeycreepers, the ‘akohekohe is at threat from avian malaria from mosquitoes and invasive species like rats. They were added to the Endangered Species Act in 1967 and eradication attempts of invasive species are helping to increase the ‘akohekohe population.

The tree and the flower are two lovers. First ʻŌhiʻa was transformed out of jealousy by the volcano goddess Pele. Then Lehua was transformed into a flower so that they would be together eternally.

If you pick a flower and separate them, the lover's tears will make it rain.

This city was founded by the Almoravid dynasty in 1070 and was the capital of an empire which at its height stretched into what is now Spain; as well as much of the city centre, a monument to the Almoravids is (1) the Palmeriae, still a huge oasis of palm trees which now holds museums and hotels, one of which I stayed in.

Among other sights we saw were (2-4) the gorgeous Galerie la Kasbah, and (5) Musée du Patrimoine Immatériel Jamaâ el-Fna, built in 1922, which sadly wasn’t open, but which looks striking!

Through the souk in the city centre has flowed the life of the Berber (the original Moroccans and very much still here), Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs (who conquered Morocco in 709 and brought the Arabic language and Islamic religion with the Idrassid Dynasty (788-974), still followed long after the Idrassids perished), Jews, Europeans , and sub-Saharan Africans (whom we met in an earlier post building palaces and who now make up 2-3% of the population) has flowed through the souk.

Morocco has had a strong influence on southern Europe, especially what is now Spain, and has in turn taken on European influences; the empire built by the Almoravids began to crumble and ended once and for all in 1492 when the kingdom of Spain ‘re conquered’ itself.

Spain expelled the Jews and Muslims who had lived there for hundreds of years (the two groups have lived side by side though most of history and though obviously the relationship is now strained, I hope it can be brought back) though the refugees were by now as much European as Maghrebi, they were unwanted in the new state and mostly fled to Morocco as it was the nearest country that would take them. They brought European influences here.

(The excellent book by the Museum with No Frontiers is about this experience and was one of the biggest influences on my thinking about Morocco).

Morocco is no longer the world power it was in earlier times but has also left behind the poverty and foreign rule which were seen as inevitable in the early 20th century. “How much longer can we go on kidding these people? How long before they tum their guns in the other direction” asked George Orwell of European colonists and it turned out not to be much longer; this was far from obvious when he wrote in 1938, but Morocco proudly became an independent state in 1956.

The souk is seen as a tourist trap but to me it is a sign of the wealth that, managed by King Mohammed VI and his ministers, and bolstered by remittances sent home by Moroccans living and working in other countries (one of whom sits opposite me), is easing the old poverty.

Morocco is becoming as wealthy as already rich countries but will not become just the same as everywhere else because it will always be Morocco.
