Basque embroidery
I've recently learned that there are in fact two types of stitch that come from EH! One is called Basque stitch, and look like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a Basque knot, which seems to be just a variation of the Palestrina knot. Here's the Palestrina:
Tumblr media
And the Basque knot:
Tumblr media
There's absolutely no information regarding the history or the authenticity of these stitches - the same stitches may have maaany names in different places - just a reference to one book that states they can be tracked back to the 8th century which is INSANE, so take it with a pinch of salt.
Anyways, they're cute! Did you know them?

Oops hi I made spell lists:
Beat: Chain 1: Start it up! Chain 2: I'm digging it! Chain 3: Booyah! Chain 4: Booyakah! Repeater: The Beat is on! Counter: Nice try. Spell 1: Ollie! Spell 2: 180 front-side! Spell 3: Kickflip! Spell 4: Varial! Spell 5: 900! Victory: You call that a fight? Defeat: Damn... No more'a that!
Rhyme: Chain 1: Hmp. Chain 2: Right. Chain 3: Here we go... Chain 4: It's on. Repeater: Take this! Counter: Mind the Golden Rule! Spell 1: Heelflip. Spell 2: Tsukkomi. Spell 3: Sciurinae. Spell 4: SQL. Spell 5: Keep moving forward! Victory: Better to lose the battle and win the war. Defeat: Let's let bygones be bygones...
Neku: Chain 1: Hmph! Chain 2: Gotcha! Chain 3: Not bad! Chain 4: Hya! Repeater: Like that? Counter: Outta my face! | Screw that. Spell 1: Art punk. Spell 2: Prog rock! Spell 3: Deathcore! Spell 4: Indie! Spell 5: Revival! Victory: Any last words? Defeat: We'll get it next time.
Josh: Chain 1: Hmp. Chain 2: Ha! Chain 3: There. Chain 4: That'll do. Repeater: You are done! Counter: Predictable. | Smile~ Spell 1: Styx. Spell 2: Lethe. Spell 3: Acheron! Spell 4: Phlegethon! Spell 5: Cocytus! Victory: Rest in peace~ Defeat: What?!
Shiki: Chain 1: Hya! Chain 2: Hm. Chain 3: Ha! Chain 4: Again! Repeater: How's that?! Counter: Back off! Spell 1: Chain! Spell 2: Ladder! Spell 3: Rosette! Spell 4: Sorbello! Spell 5: Palestrina! Victory: That was great! Defeat: No... Not like this!
Everything but the spells was taken from their voice quotes, more or less, although I had to get creative with Rhyme. Beat’s spells are all skateboarding tricks. Rhyme’s spells reflect the progression of her dreams – a heelflip is a basic skateboarding trick, a tsukkomi is the role she plays in her and Beat’s manzai comedy duo, Sciurinae is the sub-family flying squirrels belong to, and SQL is both a programming language and another squirrel joke. Her victory quote is meant to be consoling the other player for their loss, but I kinda like that it could also be taken passive-aggressively. Neku’s spells are subgenres of rock music meant to reflect his character growth, with “prog rock” being a reference to the boss Progfox Noise which takes his form and can perform fusion attacks. Josh’s spells are based around the rivers of Hades, since Josh mentioned the Acheron in-game to refer to the Shibuya River. (I considered trying to find something else instead of Cocytus, but I think he’d prefer to keep the crude mishearing.) “Smile~” is one of his counter options because that’s what he says when you take a selfie with Noise to flip it to the other side of the screen and cut off its attack. And Shiki’s spells are all embroidery stitches. :3

@wastelesscrafts has been a godsend, because perfectionism has always kept me from repairing my favorite clothes, but now that I’m learning the basics of sewing, embroidery, and visible mending, I’m looking at my wardrobe in a whole new (fun, versatile, and personalized) way.
First project: I lost a lot of weight and could no longer wear some of my favorite work pants. I used the ladder stitch technique to take in a couple inches at the waist, and I’m decorating the seams with palestrina knot embroidery.

Next step will be cuffing them (I’ve always had to just roll them up!)

Voices of History
Kaelan A. Graham-Hughes
March 31, 2020
My work is mostly embroidered. Embroidery is a time-consuming task, and historically people who could spend time embroidering cloth were wealthy, as embroidery does not serve a purely practical purpose. Embroidered items are of higher value, as they represent hours upon hours of work for a more frivolous purpose: to look aesthetically pleasing. It highlights how the efforts of the wealthy and powerful are valued more than the work of people lower in the hierarchy. The transparent acetate and translucent layers of vellum and mulberry paper also represent history, and how the events and voices of history get obscured over time. The piece has a background bearing layers of watercolour lines, dots, and washes, to which the subsequent layers were stitched. The piece incorporates the following embroidery stitches:
1.     Straight stitch
2.     French knots
3.     Star stitch
4.     Link stitch
5.     Satin stitch
6.     Chain stitch
7.     Stem stitch

9.     Herringbone stitch
10.  Split stitch
11.  Back stitch
12.  Fern stitch
13.  Bullion knots
14.  Single feather stitch
15.  Seed stitch
16.  Feather stitch
17.  Arrow stitch
18.  Closed herringbone stitch
19.  Open chain stitch
20.  Woven cross stitch
21.  Fly stitch
22.  Connected petal stitch
23.  Ermine stitch
24.  Thorn stitch
25.  Double feather stitch
26.  Chevron stitch
27.  Cross stitch
28.  Woven star stitch
29.  Pistil stitch
30.  Colonel’s knot
31.  Coral stitch
32.  Cretan stitch

Day 32 B-8
Spent the entire day and night trimming an unexpectedly early harvest. Let’s just say making pesto with a whole lot of basil. Bringing in the sheaves.  Therefore: palestrina stitch! I think the first few are right and the rest are wrong, but I’m not really sure what I changed about the way I did them. *shrug*
