HAPPY PAKISTANI INDEPENDENCE DAY: AUGUST 14, 1947
Pakistani Independence Day is observed annually on August 14 to commemorate the day Pakistan achieved independence from the British Raj in August of 1947. Pakistani leader Muhammad Ali Jinnah addressed the nation, "you are free; you are free to go to your temples. You are free to go to your mosques or to any other places of worship in this State of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion, caste or creed—that has nothing to do with the business of the state."

I often post about Palestine but I'd like to take a moment to talk about what's happening in Bangladesh.
KEEP YOUR EYE ON BANGLADESH
TL;DR Students killed for protesting the government's quota system. Students are being arrested and murdered for speaking up about their deceased friends. Everyone is being threatened by the government and many social media platforms are being banned.
All I'm asking is to spread the word. Please. International pressure really works for our nation. We're dying here. UNICEF reports 34 children dead. There might be more. All reblogs and likes and shares are appreciated. Thank you. I guess I'll see you tomorrow.
Past
A movement protesting the government's quota system put forth by the father of our nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This was placed in the first place to help the grandchildren of those who fought in the Liberation War of our country to get government jobs. We have a terrible job market here which is why many highly educated people leave the country. On 16th July, While protesting, a Student named Abu Sayed of Begum Rokeya University was killed by the police. This only stoked the feelings of injustice between the students.
During a press conference, the PM was asked about the quota for the grandchildren of veterans. Her response? "If we don't give jobs to the grandchildren of Veterans, will we give jobs to the grandchildren of Razakars?" Razakars are the people who collaborated with the Pakistani Forces to bring down the Bangladeshi freedom fighters. They betrayed the nation for their own gain.
Traitors.
Imagine calling the youth of your nation traitors.
Imagine calling almost 14 million young people who can't find a job despite their credentials betrayers.
Imagine cursing people who are protesting for job equality under a government with the all time highest corruption in the history of this nation.
On 17th July the broadband connection centre in Mohakhali was burned down. Mobile data services and communication were shut down by the PM. After 11 days the internet was properly restored.
On 19th July, A National Military Curfew was put in place by the Prime Minister to mitigate the unrest.
But that was last month. If you need details I highly recommend sources in Bangladesh like the Daily Star or reputable like Al Jazeera. The quota has since been lifted. Lives were lost. But it was for a good cause, right?
Right?
RIGHT?
Present
Well no. There's still a curfew in the capital. Several districts like Cumilla are still under attack. The government warns of not spreading misinformation yet still lie about the severity of the issue. The police are arresting those who protest as well as those who speak up. The students are demanding for the resignation of the PM. The PM obviously refuses to apologise or even acknowledge the deaths of some 147?
or is it 200?
They're not counting how many they're killing. They're not letting anyone else count either.
It is midnight here. This morning as in 4th August 2024, the students have called for a non cooperation movement. The Ruling Party Awami League will also be holding rallies across the nation tomorrow. I do not know what is going to happen to me. I do not want to think of what will happen to my family tomorrow. I don't really care. What I'm truly scared for is the future. As these protests do not end well here.
Future
Precedence says the PM will eventually resign. Every student protest of our nation has ended in momentary success.
Momentary
What comes after is usually a military regime. A caretaker government until a next government is chosen in a supposed election. Even then if they decide to hold an election. The caretaker government is usually run as a dictatorship. It was true for the 60s. It was true for the 90s. I don't doubt it will happen again.
I'm graduating next year. My niece is still new to the academic system. I wish her the best. My grandmas and grandpas are dead. Nobody left to pray for me. My aunts and uncles are growing old. My cousins can't speak up for fear. My mom is so tired. My dad is angry. I'm unsure if I will still be able to post the next couple of days.
All I'm asking is to spread the word. Please. International pressure really works for our nation. We're dying here. UNICEF reports 34 children dead. There might be more. All reblogs and likes and shares are appreciated. Thank you. I guess I'll see you tomorrow.

An Italian court has given a Pakistani couple life sentences for killing their 18-year-old daughter because she refused an arranged marriage.
Saman Abbas's body was found at a farmhouse in northern Italy in November 2022, 18 months after she disappeared.
Her father, Shabbar Abbas, was arrested in Pakistan and extradited to be tried for her murder in August.
Her mother, Nazia Shaheen, was convicted in her absence. She is believed to be in hiding in Pakistan.
Shabbar Abbas had earlier made an impassioned plea to the court, asserting that "never in my life did I think of killing my daughter".
The teenager's uncle, Danish Hasnain, was given 14 years in jail for involvement in the murder, but two of her cousins were cleared.
Saman Abbas's so-called honour killing by her family in late April 2021 shocked Italy. Following her disappearance, Italy's union of Islamic communities issued a fatwa - a religious ruling - rejecting forced marriages.
The teenager had emigrated with her family from Pakistan to the farm town of Novellara in 2016, according to Italian reports.
She began dating a young man of Pakistani origin, and a photograph of them kissing on a street in the regional capital, Bologna, reportedly drew the fury of her parents.
Italian investigators said Saman Abbas's parents had wanted her to travel to Pakistan for an arranged marriage in 2020, but she refused.
She then lived for several months under the protection of social services from October that year, but returned to the family home in Novellara in late April 2021 in response to a flurry of messages from her family, Italian reports said.
Prosecutors said she had been tricked into returning home and it was at this point she disappeared.
CCTV footage released by the police showed three of Saman Abbas's family members walking with spades, a crowbar and a blue bag on 29 April 2021. The following day, separate footage showed the missing teenager leaving the house with her parents.
Her body was eventually recovered last November, close to a farm house not far from where the family lived, after her uncle had revealed where she had been buried.
A post mortem examination found she had suffered a broken neck bone, possibly as a result of being strangled.
Her parents had immediately left Italy for Pakistan after she disappeared, while her uncle Danish Hasnain and two of her cousins travelled to France and Spain.
The uncle was eventually detained in Paris in 2021, while her father was arrested in 2022 and finally extradited on 31 August this year. Her mother remains at large.
Although Nazia Shaheen was in absentia, the court in the northern city of Reggio Emilia convicted both parents and sentenced them to life in jail.
Shabbar Abbas had earlier told the court he was innocent, insisting he and his wife had only followed their daughter on the night she disappeared because they were unhappy it was so late and they wanted to see where she was going.
"This trial is not complete. I too want to know who killed my daughter," he said, according to Italian media.
The idea that a murder can be "honourable" is believed to have come from some tribal customs, where an allegation against a woman is perceived to bring dishonour to her family.
According to these customs, male family members of a woman who has interactions with unrelated men - however innocuous - should first kill the woman, then go after the man.
Human rights groups say the most common reasons for "honour killings" are when the victim refuses to enter into an arranged marriage or have been raped or sexually assaulted.
But killings can be carried out for more trivial reasons, like dressing in a way deemed inappropriate or displaying behaviour seen as disobedient.
In Pakistan, hundreds of women are killed in this way each year. A much smaller number of men are also murdered in such cases. Last month, an 18-year-old woman in the remote Kohistan district was shot dead by her father and uncle on orders from tribal elders - because of a photo that showed her with a man. The photo, which went viral, was later found to have been doctored. Her father has been arrested while her uncle is on the run.

Mohammed was captured on 1 March 2003, in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi by a combined operation of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)... ...On 30 August 2019, a military judge set a trial date of 11 January 2021, for Mohammed's death penalty trial.[10] His trial was further postponed on 18 December 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[11] Mohammed's trial restarted on 7 September 2021[12] but was postponed again for years of plea deal negotiations.[13] On 31 July 2024, Mohammed agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence rather than a death-penalty trial.[14] His plea deal was revoked by Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin two days later.[15][16]
if you want to stay alive as long as possible as an enemy of the united states, being on death row seems like an oddly effective strategy?
if this guy was still free then by 2006 they would have just blown up whatever cafe he happened to be eating breakfast at

The case of Shafilea Ahmed - an honour killing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shafilea Ahmed was a 17 year old British-Pakistani girl who was murdered by her parents, iftikhar Ahmed and Farzana Ahmed. She was killed in an honour killing due to the fact that she refused to accept an arranged marriage.
Shafilea was born on 14 of july 1986 in Bradford England. She was described as a confident and very kind young girl who the community loved.
On 11th of September 2003, shafilea was reported missing for a week by her teachers, so missing posters were put up by the police in order to find the young girl,
The police were convinced that she could have been Murdered in a possible honour killing due to shafilea coming back to England from pakistan with a damaged throat, from her drinking bleach in a suicide attempt, which her parents played off as an accident. Shafilea had also been reported to have run away many times before her disappearance.
In February 2004, some dismembered remains were found in river Kent, near Cumbria after heavy flooding. The police had a suspicion that the body was Shafilea so they asked the parents to identify the body, and they were Correct. The body was Shafilea’s. They identified her body by her golf zigzag bracelet and blue topaz ring. Since her body was very badly decomposed, the cause of death couldn’t be determined. Another way they identified that the body was Shafileas was by examining the dental work on it. Her dentist was 90% sure that the body was shafileas.
The police had no idea what to think, most of them thought it was her parents but had no evidence to say it was definitely them. The only evidence they had was shafileas friends telling them that her parents were kind of abusive, like one time a friend of Shafilea recalled that farzana called shafilea a “slut” for wearing nails and dying her hair and that shafilea wrote poems saying “I’m trapped.” Even when they tried to ask iftikhar and farzana, the two straight out refused and didn’t allow any questions.
Also at a press conference that spoke about shafileas death, iftikhar and farzana appeared after saying that they were not going to be making an appearance. Since the police did not trust them, the parents had to guilt trip the police and act all innocent. Iftikhar and farzana cried on television, praying for their daughter.
The family was left alone for many years until on 25th August 2010, Shafileas younger sister alesha had called the police saying that a robbery had taken place. When they police got there, it was a lie so they took alesha into custody, that’s when alesha told them everything. She told them that her parents had murdered Shafilea in front of her and her younger siblings by putting a plastic bag over Shafileas head and suffocating her. All because Shafilea refused to marry somebody. Alesha had also told them that iftikhar had driven to Cumbria all the way from bradford just to dump her body in the river Kent. T
So on the 7th September 2011, the police had announced that shafileas parents were charged with murder and in may 2012 their trial will begin. Farzana and Iftikhar were both found guilty and sentenced to life in prison, with the minimum sentence of 25 years on 3 August 2012.
Honour killings are not legal or good under any circumstances. Don’t let these continue.
R.I.P shafilea Ahmed ❤️‍🩹🕊️

Thanks to @WD4AH_Al for watching the @SWRadiogram Twitter last weekend, while we were in New Jersey attending post-wedding receptions for our son and daughter-in-law. Al informed me that the Saturday 0230 UTC transmission on WINB was the previous week's program. I've informed WINB. These things happen occasionally in the shoestring business of private shortwave broadcasting. Because of sinus problems, I am not able to do the voice introduction of this week's show. My wife Jinling fills in. She and I are both PhD ex-professors who ended up in the US government (she via the private sector). We will mark our 30th anniversary in about two months. Our son is also a PhD, but he evaded academia, going directly to the aerospace industry.  A video of last week's Shortwave Radiogram (program 366) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Wednesday 1330 UTC).
