The Radium Girls
The Radium Girls were female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with self-luminous paint. The incidents occurred at three different factories: one in Orange, New Jersey, beginning around 1917; one in Ottawa, Illinois, beginning in the early 1920s; and a third facility in Waterbury, Connecticut, also in the 1920s.
After being told that the paint was harmless, the women in each facility ingested deadly amounts of radium after being instructed to "point" their brushes on their lips in order to give them a fine tip; some also painted their fingernails, face and teeth with the glowing substance. The women were instructed to point their brushes in this way because using rags or a water rinse caused them to use more time and material, as the paint was made from powdered radium, gum arabic and water.
Among the first to see numerous problems among dial painters were dentists. Dental pain, loose teeth, lesions and ulcers, and the failure of tooth extractions to heal were some of these conditions. Many of the women later began to develop anemia, bone fractures, and necrosis of the jaw, a condition now known as radium jaw. The women also experienced suppression of menstruation, and sterility. It is thought that the X-ray machines used by the medical investigators may have contributed to some of the sickened workers' ill-health by subjecting them to additional radiation. It turned out at least one of the examinations was a ruse, part of a campaign of disinformation started by the defense contractor. U.S. Radium and other watch-dial companies rejected claims that the affected workers were suffering from exposure to radium. For some time, doctors, dentists, and researchers complied with requests from the companies not to release their data.
In 1923, the first dial painter died, and before her death, her jaw fell away from her skull. By 1924, 50 women who had worked at the plant were ill, and a dozen had died. At the urging of the companies, worker deaths were attributed by medical professionals to other causes. Syphilis, a notorious sexually transmitted infection at the time, was often cited in attempts to smear the reputations of the women.
The inventor of radium dial paint, Dr Sabin Arnold von Sochocky, died in November 1928, becoming the 16th known victim of poisoning by radium dial paint. He had gotten sick from radium in his hands, not the jaw, but the circumstances of his death helped the Radium Girls in court.
Five of the women in New Jersey challenged their employer in a case over the right of individual workers who contract occupational diseases to sue their employers under New Jersey's occupational injuries law, which at the time had a two-year statute of limitations, but settled out of court in 1928. Five women in Illinois who were employees of the Radium Dial Company (which was unaffiliated with the United States Radium Corporation) sued their employer under Illinois law, winning damages in 1938.

Jason calls CPS on Bruce and Alfred and through a ton of money under the table, he gets custody of Damian and Duke, he even manages to get Tim, an emancipated kid, in the deal. He takes them out of Gotham and gives them a chance at being normal teenagers and in retaliation, they teach him how to feel normal again. Crazy it may not be but they are leavung everything they know behind and they get to be thselves.
I read a similar fic once; only Jason wasn't after the custody, but CPS was involved. It was a part of an awesome series that started, I think, with Red Hood being killed. (I think)

I don't know what to add. Except that maybe Jason wouldn't necessarily have more money to bribe CPS than Bruce Wayne.
But okay, let's see. All the instances of missing school, inexplicable injuries, Tim having to assume an official position at Wayne Enterprises at 17 while their dad was off gallivanting the world; Richard Grayson who moved away the second he hit eighteen; it all comes together when Jason Todd comes out from wherever he was holed up these years and claims he was afraid for his life. But he can't just, you know, stand by and watch the things happen to other kids.
Look. His allegations are so serious that it's not only CPS that's working on this case, it's GCPD. They can't build a case on Jason's says so and circumstantial evidence (and the boys are denying everything — but then again, they would, wouldn't they?). But the youngest — Damian and Duke — are removed from his custody and placed into state's.
Jason and Bruce are involved in heavy litigation though, Bruce suing him for libel, defamation and god knows what else. Jason — for child endangerment, and his X-rays paint a picture that isn't pretty. How the fuck did he get a gunshot in the stomach while he was fourteen? Why the only hospital's records are the charity clinic in Crime Alley, sponsored by Wayne?
Ric Grayson, who at this point is living in Bludhaven and wants to have nothing to do with Waynes, has no comment.
Tim has a PR nightmare on his hands and a mental breakdown.
It isn't Duke's first stint in the system, but he honestly does not have any positive feelings about Jason. It wasn't necessary, he insists.
Damian just wants to kill him.
Meanwhile, they're distracted by uncovering and dismantling a child-trafficking ring that spread out through Gotham, involving even group homes under Martha Wayne's Foundation patronage. They also, surprisingly but relatedly, get good, if mandatory, counseling.
Jason manages to win the custody because, honestly, the evidence against Bruce is overwhelming. Jason, on the other hand, has a stable government and law enforcement-related job (a contractor for several government agencies including something called Taskforce Z; the courts know not to ask); a 5-bedroom house in a neighborhood with a good school district; and a winning personality: serious and earnest-looking, whereas Bruce has a Brucie reputation behind him.
So, the kids move in with Jason. Tim, by the way, follows voluntarily. He wants to protect the kids against whatever nefarious scheme Jason Todd is pulling. He also wants to annoy the shit out of him in a "you asked for me to be here, pal" way, though, he will find out pretty soon that Damian and Duke got it covered.
What Jason's scheme is:
1) Enroll them in school. Even Tim, who got GED. He's going to the community college now.
"I can get into Princeton, you know," he says when he finds out, baffled.
"Prove it," Jason crosses his hands on his chest, goading.
Tim points a finger at him. "No. Your reverse psychology does not work on me."
Jason shrugs. It infuriates Tim, because, actually, he can't get into Princeton, unless he's paying stupid money, to which he now has no access. His GED is so-so, doesn't have extracurricular, and so on, so forth. If he gets a year in this community college, with good grades, and then transfers, it would be actually doable, though.
2) Damian has so many extracurriculars: art club, drama club, Youth Naturalists Program (which is kinda like scouts, but less camping, more taking care of pets and plants), swimming. What he does not have: time for patrol. Because while no school or club activities take place during the night, he needs to sleep sometimes.
3) Duke is pissed at Jason the most, actually. Him being out of Gotham makes it harder to visit his parents. Besides, he was never really in danger, and Bruce never acted against him in any way, much less what Jason accused him of. Or Tim let it slip. Or Damian indicated. The point is: it did not happen to Duke, and he doesn't appreciate a random dude coming to his life as some kind of savior and making decisions for him.
Jason enrolls Duke into the chemistry club. Maybe, he suggest, if he studied chemistry really hard, he could crack the secret of Joker toxin and cure his parents. And, well. Duke still pissed at him for involving him in whatever bullshit war he has with Bruce. But. Some of his attention switches to that club, and his basketball team, and the girl from his class.
4) They meet up with other Bats in Blud, in a bar where Ric's girlfriend works, sometimes. Only Jason, Cass and Ric are actually old enough to be there, but, hey. Nobody is checking ID in Bludhaven. Ric wasn't thrilled at first, but they just hang out, for a long time, with no pressure and, "No expectations," Jason said to them, and especially to Tim for some reason, before they even got into the car. Tim was offended. Damian was Dick's favorite, why it's him who gets a stern look?
But yeah, it hits Tim hard when he sees Ric behaving so differently from Dick. But eventually, as they all get to know each other, and get to like each other, things look up.
When Scarecrow attacks the Bludhaven and it turns out that he was brainwashing Ric into self-isolating all along... the . They suit up and fight him off. Ric isn't going back with them or anything, but they start talking on the phone and video calls, more frequently. When they visit, they don't always hang out at the bar but also movies, or parks. It's nice.
5) Bruce is doing therapy, as mandated by court. So much therapy. He does make an effort, though it doesn't really help. Time away, more stable, less violent life, their own therapy, gave kids somewhat more detached and objective look at their old live, and wow, was that fucked up.
Bruce tries to re-establish contact, and it seems like he really, really tries. So nobody knows what exactly to do with all of this.
Even Jason. Jason, maybe, is struggling most of all, with an idea of Bruce who changed, who loves him back and will take care of him and is safe. It's complicated, and they are doing things step by step. Eventually, Bruce and Alfred just visit very very often. It's been decided that it would be better for kids to stay away from Gotham and vigilante life, so they're not moving back home. But Bruce is back in their life, if in a limited way.
He's like a weekend dad, you know? After divorce, when the mom gets the custody and has to do all the boring and hard parts of parenting, deal with tantrums, teenage angst, rebellion, grades, etc, and the dad gets the kids on weekends and does fun and easy stuff.
He does give them money, though, so they get a dog, and Tim is totally going to Princeton (even if he isn't sure he wants to), and there's a new chemical lab at Duke's school...
I've noticed that i didn't talk about the girls. Well, they're not really present in the boys' lives anymore, with the move and all. Cass and Steph rarely visit, but they have a guest room with their name on it anyway. Steph is mock-offended Jason didn't want to adopt her, but Jason says it wouldn't go over that well with her girlfriend. He says he offered Cass to join them, back at the beginning, but she declined.
That's basically it. Jason is a suburban single dad of two children and Tim, dog-owner, PTA committee member, neighborhood baking association's president, and, sometimes, the government sends him with a team of zombies to do stuff for them.
Tim is a college student and even likes it.
Damian gets a first prize at an art competition.
Duke wins a state Olympiad in Chemistry.
Ric is still a cabbie, but he's happy about it.
Cass marries Steph in a June wedding. They both continue to be vigilantes, but then again, now they're both legal adults. So what Jason can do about it?

Boeing delivers the last QF-16 "Zombie Viper" target drone from the Jacksonville unit

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) received Boeing's final QF-16 "Zombie Viper" air target when the aircraft was delivered to the 82nd Air Target Squadron at Tyndall Air Base in Panama City, Florida.
The last of the more than 75 drone targets of the QF-16 modification line at Cecil Airport was accepted by the Integrated Aircraft Maintenance Operations (DCMA) personnel of the Defense Contract Management Agency (AIMO) St. Augustine, on July 29.
A second QF-16 line, based on the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in Tucson, will continue to operate through the remaining acquisition contract. More than 120 of the retired F-16s must be modified on air targets under the current contract.
The QF-16 is an optionally piloted reusable air target system, modified from previously retired old F-16 aircraft, which have already been used in U.S. Air Force combat missions.
After modification, the aircraft can be piloted by a pilot or via remote control by a qualified group of ground operators and technicians who monitor performance.
Without risk to the crew, the aircraft can fly on a multitude of missions, including testing newly developed weapon systems, real air-to-air missile firing training, testing of real ground-to-air missile firing, automatic takeoff and landing, and supersonic flights.
The first unmanned flight of the QF-16 Zombie Viper took place on September 23, 2013. Since then, more than 75 modified aircraft have been delivered from Boeing's facilities in Jacksonville.
The QF-16 platform is the successor to the QF-4 Phantom drone, which was retired in 2016.
Boeing previously received retired F-16 aircraft, which were regenerated from storage at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in Tucson, Arizona, and flew to Cecil Airport to install drone equipment to prepare the aircraft for its new mission.
DCMA and its industry counterparts faced several obstacles throughout the production life of the QF-16 aircraft. These obstacles included supply chain interruptions, the COVID-19 pandemic and a variety of maintenance problems on the aircraft over 30 years old.
"We work daily, directly in the hangar and side by side with the contractor, to solve a variety of production problems," said Michael Jackson, a quality assurance specialist at DCMA AIMO St. Augustine. “Our DCMA team worked diligently to overcome all obstacles, alleviating production delays and delivering the remaining aircraft on schedule and on budget.”
“The QF-16 provides crucial capacity for the Air Force and Navy in the development of next-generation weapons systems,” said Navy Commander Gabriel Hohner, commanding officer of DCMA AIMO St. Augustine. I am proud of the partnership that DCMA had with Boeing here to deliver this capacity."
The QF-16s have always been delivered from Boeing to the 82nd Air Target Squadron at Tyndall Air Base for operational use. Each aircraft maintains a lifespan of approximately 300 flight hours.

We’ve been vetting gutter vendors to replace the mess our roofers made of our gutters when we had a metal roof installed this summer. Here is the abridged version of our saga:
Gutter vendor #1: Set up an appointment for in-person quote…and then was a no-show.
Gutter vendor #2: Set up an appointment for in-person quote and actually appeared on time, so points in his favor. He then proceeded to tell us all about a client who sued him over his crew breaking her giant urn of family ashes. Oh, and said that he couldn’t replace our second-story gutters because the metal roof would require his workers to wear special shoes that were really expensive. ???? He never did get around to sending us his quote. I assume the broken urn of familial ashes was responsible and I wish him luck breaking whatever curse that caused.
Gutter vendor #3: Set up an appointment for in-person quote, then rescheduled appointment. Then they rescheduled again. Finally arrived and said the second story would need scaffolding to reach. No mention of special shoes, so points in his favor. Promised to send us the quote later that day. We’re still waiting on that quote. We assume his crew also destroyed ancestral ashes…
Gutter vendor #4: Set up an appointment for in-person quote and actually appeared on time, so points in his favor. No mention of special shoes or ancestral ashes, so feeling really positive about things. And then he tells me that his crew intends to plant a few ladders right on top of our back porch to access the second story gutter. Considering all the other vendors who actually bothered to come look at the house said that the back porch roof was far too delicate to hold the weight of contractor ladders + contractors, he definitely lost some points. He lost further points when he emailed us a PDF quote that contained a drawing reminiscent of the Altamira Cave paintings and appeared to confuse the symbol for feet with inches. We sent many, many follow-up questions.
Gutter vendor #5: Set up an appointment for in-person quote and actually appeared on time today, so points in his favor. No mention of special shoes or ancestral ashes, so things are heading in the right direction. Displayed industry knowledge and provided best practice insight when I asked questions about our project (by now, feeling as though I am an expert in all things gutter…and not just b/c I grew up in a double-wide…😊 ) He even addressed the stability of the porch roof unprompted and walked me through his strategy for his team to access the second story. And again, it did not involve special shoes. My elation over this detail cannot be understated. He even provided a detailed quote before he left. And it was itemized. Not as itemized as I intended and there will be follow up, but definitely feeling like we might have a winner!

Contractor screws me out of $1500. Good luck finding someone else to do the work.
I got hosed by a residential construction contractor years ago. We'll call him Mark. I'd done three projects for Mark prior to this one and had no issues. For this project, Mark wanted plans for a remodel and add on based off some photos and hand sketches. It was about $1500 in work which was a lot at the time. I delivered the first draft. Mark was quite happy with the result and would be consulting with the client over revisions or acceptance. He said he would get back to me as soon as he had some news about the project. Typically I would just run a tab on something like this as there is no limit on revisions and updates until the project is finalized. Everyone understood that the meter is running when I'm working. In nearly a decade of this line of work I'd never had any problem with anyone paying.
So after delivering the first draft to Mark I waited on the revisions. It was a pretty decent sized project for me at that time and I was looking forward to it. I waited. And waited. And waited. 3 weeks went by. He wasn't returning my calls so I sent him a bill.
Two days later Mark called and said he didn't get the job so wouldn't be paying. Whoa, we didn't have an agreement of me getting paid if he gets paid. I get paid for my time regardless and never work on a bid arrangement. He still refused so I told him to take a hike. Also let some other freelance CAD guys know about him. We were competitors but there was so much work we would refer projects to each other if we were overloaded.
I resigned myself to losing that money. It wasn't actual money lost as all I have invested is my time. But that's time I could have spent working on another project that actually paid. My time is where I make my money. I didn't have materials I would mark up or subs I managed. I was a one guy operation. So, yeah, it sucked.
6 months later Mark calls, all buddy-buddy like with me. He has a big project with a tight deadline and knows I'm the man for it. He's laying it on thick with me, too. Like I'm a great friend he hadn't talked to in a while, telling me I'm the best at my job, and so on. I knew exactly where this was headed. So I played nice with him and I'm sure Mark thought it was all water under the bridge. The next day I sent Mark a bid that was high (about 50% more than my typical rate), tacked $1500 on to it and told him I wanted it all up front.
Mark called 10 minutes later and wanted to know why the price was so high and payment required up front. Those were not the terms of our previous projects. So I explained it to him as he seemed to be suffering from selective amnesia.
Mark starts begging me to do the project. This isn't a bid, he claims, he actually has this project in hand. Mark also is apparently having trouble finding someone to take on this project. Apparently he'd managed to stiff all the good operators in the area so he worked his way back to me. I told him I'd be more than happy to take on any project he had once the $1500 was paid and all further projects would be paid up front. I never heard from him again. He didn't get that project, either, even though he claimed it was locked up.
Mark's wife actually owned their business. It had an effeminate name and they used this "women owned construction business" as a selling point in ads and at trade shows. I'd guess 2/3 of their clients were landed just on that piece of deception. The wife was mainly just the face of the company and a marketing point. She wasn't involved in the business beyond that. So when Mark started complaining about difficulty getting subs to work with she started calling around. I heard through the grapevine that she was told off several times. Anyone who has worked with a construction subcontractor knows they can be rather blunt, to say the least. They weren't just screwing the CAD guys. Subs in every category had been stiffed.
A year later Mark and his wife were sued by multiple subs and customers. Mark really screwed up a few houses, putting in the wrong flooring, getting paint schemes wrong, and so on. They lost these court cases and tried to get out of it by filing bankruptcy. They got a few dismissed but not all of them. Last I heard they got divorced and he was stuck with a lot of the debt because she was able to prove she wasn't involved in some of the decisions. But she had some debt too. I like to think I got the ball rolling when I let some other subs know about their shady practices.

Online Reporter Scott Enman’spersonal vendetta and relenting pursuit of character assassination has now landed him in court in Nevada
Brooklyn Scott Enman (AKA. DJ Scott Matthews) was hit by a lawsuit for harassment, character assassination, contractual interference, fraud and civil conspiracy in the district court of Nevada.
LAS VEGAS, NV July 30, 2019 — Total Leisure Management Operations Services LLC,and its investors Johan Rizki and Lena Romanova, through their attorney filed a lawsuit on July 28, 2019, against freelance reporter Scott Enman.
The lawsuit states that Scott Enman preyed on disgruntled employees and contractors of Total Leisure Management, in which Lena Romanova and Johan Rizki have interests and which operates in Nevada and California. Total Leisure Management operates a new visitor attraction in Las Vegas.
The filing with the court states “[s]ince the inception of the Attraction, Defendant Enman has contacted or interviewed Plaintiffs’ [Lena Romanova and Johan Rizki] partners, employees, independent contractors, vendors, artists, landlords and other persons associated with the Attraction without justification or cause.”
Scott Enman went after everyone associated with the company in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, digging up dirt.
“I just spent an hour interview with Scott Enman. He promised to … we will take your business down” wroteSean Dowdell, owner of Club Tattoo, a disgruntled contractor to Lena Romanova in Vegas.
“This guy (Scott Enman) is … on a mission to get you at any price… someone else is paying him, not me!” said an anonymous call received by Lena Romanova.
Here is how Enman implemented character attacks against Lena Romanova and her business associates.
First, Enman enlisted for his campaign disgruntled individuals who were separately sued for company theft, false statements and contract breach. He then only interviewed few resentful vendors and contractors whose contracts were terminated due to poor performance, pay penalties and disruptive behaviors.
Enman’s vendetta against Lena Romanova and Johan Rizki dates back to December 2018 when he published a series of false reports and defamatory statements about a Brooklyn Winter festival. Using the same tactics, Enman collected false reports from disgruntled vendors to paint a negative image of his target. To get more publicity and coverage, Scott Enman did not shy away from engaging in racist and incriminating statements against Lena Romanova, and syndicating articles with other reporters in Brooklyn. He became the go-to-reporter to blackmail the organizer of the festival.
Enman’s digital staking and pursuit of online character assassination of Lena Romanova continued for months. Until today, Lena’s photo for instance is tagged at the top of Enman’s personal twitter account!
Now everybody should question whether Scott Enman is desperate to make a name for himself by systematically attacking a hardworking woman entrepreneur or is it just a vendetta against Lena Romanova.
Unlike his prosecution of his victims online without the possibility for defending themselves, Scott Enman will have to face a court of law and give an answer to the above question.

This is hard to prove as fraud, but it’s costly and frustrating. Follow these tips to protect yourself when you hire a contractor: Beware of high-pressure sales tactics such as “today-only” discounts, offers to use your home as a “display home” for replacement siding or windows, and “lifetime warranty” offers that only last for the life of the company. Always get several written estimates – shop around for the best deal before making such a large investment. Check out a contractor before you sign a contract or pay any money. Request local references – and check them out. Contact the Attorney General’s Office to see if it has complaints or contact the Better Business Bureau. You can also contact your county clerk of court and ask how to check if a contractor has been sued by unsatisfied customers.

Eventually, 33 liens totaling US$4.7 million were filed. In July 2004, shortly after the opening of Champion Window Field, contractors began filing liens against the Freedom, accusing the team of not paying for work done on the stadium. The Freedom ended the season with a 31–65 record, finishing in last place for the second consecutive year. Mike Easler was then hired and finished the season. Pete Rose Jr., took over for one game, but quit after making a decision to continue his playing career. On July 7, after a poor start to the season, manager Tom Browning was fired. The park opened on June 18, with the Freedom losing to the Washington Wild Things 10–6 before a crowd of 4,453 fans. In 2004, the Freedom opened Champion Window Field in Florence. The team averaged fewer than 500 fans per game in attendance. Brief Overview of Umbrella Policy
In other terms, an umbrella policy is an overarching liability coverage policy that covers liabilities beyond the limitations imposed by a home owner’s or auto insurance policy. One important point to note here is that umbrella policy does not apply to health or life insurance.
What it Covers
Property Damage
An umbrella policy covers any litigation that arises from property damage that isn’t included in auto and homeowners policies. For instance, if your dog breaks an antique at a friend’s place, your kid draws on an expensive painting, or you crash a rental car, an umbrella policy takes care of the liabilities.
Personal Injury
Any damages and injuries that are not covered in the traditional homeowners’ policy, umbrella policy does. For example, if a contractor injures themselves on your patio or you injure someone accidentally in a car crash, umbrella policy pays for the medical bills.
Legal Damages
If you are sued for slander or libel against anything you might have spoken or written to cause injury to another person, umbrella insurance can cover the civil charges. Along with that, umbrella policy also covers any legal fee that comes with a lawsuit.
What it doesn’t Cover
An umbrella policy covers any liabilities and litigation that arises from property damage, injury, and associated legal fees for other’s people’s injuries or property damage. However, there are some limitations to it, particularly when you cause damages to your own property.
For example, if a leak in the bathroom damages the drywall in your own home, umbrella coverage won’t cover it. But if the same leak causes damage to a neighboring house, an umbrella policy may cover the damages.
An umbrella policy also doesn’t cover any malpractice lawsuits, intentional injury or property damage, workers’ compensation claims against you as an employer, and business loss. Also, anything that is covered by a health or life insurance policy is not covered.
In a nutshell, an umbrella policy can help you out if you’re being sued for damages and injuries caused to other people. Since homeowners’ and auto insurance policies don’t cover these liabilities, an umbrella policy can be a savior in those instances.
Umbrella insurance policies are generally sold in $1 million units, with $1 million increments from there onwards. This means that the smallest umbrella policy you buy is worth $1 million. As for the costs for the coverage, it depends on various factors, including where you live, your income, previous lawsuits, driving record and more.
