fav engpru running gag is arthur constantly failing to get it in even in the easiest circumstances. because he CAN be sweet and down-to-earth in a very charming way it's just that once things get hot and heavy he starts saying shit like tally ho my bonny let me sire an hanoverian bastard on you. and gilbert has to Leave because his boner and all his respect for this man died an ugly death right then and there

4/17/24: I am really loving my new French tutor, T'Choupi! I meant to post his(?) pic yesterday, but instead chose to post a mistakenly taken selfie, which was dumb. Anyway, we are still quite jet lagged but my travel partner is awesome at handling this stuff. He suggested we don't go to ANY museums today and instead we ambled around Aix and ate pastry and napped...SO fun!!! We walked around the corner from our place and checked out the "Casino," a local supermarchè and despite its name, there were no slot machines there. We bought 17 different kinds of cheese to sample, French deodorant for each of our kids (long story don't ask), some fresh fruits, and snacky items. Those who know me (and why would you feel obligated to be reading this if you didn't), know that one of my top travel activities is visiting the local grocery. Best way to sample the local fare, or at least the most popular junk food and candy, like the Danette milkshake. On the back of the bottle is their commentary on American “monuments” (icons?) versus those of “l’Hexagone,” which I guess refers to France and the hexagonal shape of this country…has anyone heard that reference before? I had not. In any event, Danette believes that l’Hexagone lacked anything like the “monument Americain Milkshake!” And now they have created it: << le lait secouè >> !! I liked it, but it ain’t no Village Ice Cream’s MCR!!!* (*Midnight Caramel River, Claude’s fave back in Maplewood).
We tried to walk back to the Nespresso store, but wound up going in circles and never found it, even with the google map. Claude began questioning his bat echolocation skills, but I knew it was just around a corner that we were not noticing. I was actually right, and we got back to it later, when we would sip our 4th cup of coffee with a petit square au chocolat mixed in. Buzzzzzzzzzz!
We grabbed a little late brekky from a recommended patisserie—a jambon n mushroom toasty thing, mini quiche, and 2 pain au chocolats. We ate on our back terrace in the shade, and napped on a chaise with our feet sticking out in the sun…☀️ (those minstrel--I mean Mistral--breezes can be chilly!!)
After our rest by our sweet little piscine (thanks T’Choupi!) we got up and out again to forage for more tasty stuff for dinner at home. We had to be back at our pad in the evening for my ONE and only zoom meeting I agreed to attend during our time away. Claude also agreed to attend one meeting—no big deal.
In any event, our second foraging trip led us down the street to a random boulangerie, just to check out the bread situation for tomorrow morning (when Claude will wake up early and prance down the street to retrieve our croissants and sweet treats before I awaken). But why not sample the pastry now as well, and what a delicious whaddyacallit it was. Elephant ear? Starts with a 'P'? Anyone? I can't stop now to figure it out, or I'll never get to bed.* But we shared it as we wandered around some more, and shortly thereafter, we bumped into a charcuterie (which is not hard to do around here). We grabbed some jambon and saussison sec, and across the street, we bought a baguette and a unique looking olive bread that was sort of trying to shape itself like a soft pretzel. All of it was just great, and wonderful to sit and munch at the kitchen counter, drinking rosè while listening to a webinar about the future plans of the NCJW/Essex, the org I have been volunteering with for (has it really been?) 7+ years. Good night!!
*Palmier!!

CTJL 2021, ROUND 7: PARIS
The waiter who appears at their table is charming and he knows it. He serves Archie his café au lait and croissant au beurre with a practised flair; he winks at Dot as he sets down a glass of orange juice and a chausson aux framboises oozing burgundy juices and the aroma of late-season raspberries.
Then, he angles over to Agatha.
Et pour la belle femme, he says, his voice deepening a notch and smokening two. And for the beautiful lady. Espresso and a pain au chocolat, the pastry brown and lustrous as a celebrity tanning on a St. Tropez beach. He hovers longer than expected at her side, eyes glimmering unctuously in the daylight. Although what comes next is delivered in French, it is clear even to Dot’s monolingual ear that he is addressing Agatha. But Agatha appears to either not have noticed, or be choosing to pretend as much. The waiter waits, making eye contact with Dot for a fleeting second. Naturally, she begins shredding her pastry into nervous tufts. Archie picks up Le Figaro and casually flicks it open to the first page. ‘He’s speaking to you, darling.’ ‘You are English?’ The charming waiter flashes a perfect smile. ‘My apologies. Your ‘usband spoke very good French and you look like a Frenchwoman. You have the same beauty of Frenchwoman. Same je ne sais quoi.’ Agatha lifts her teeny cup of espresso with her finger and pauses. Taking a moment to unpack everything, apparently. And doing her best not to grimace. Behind the paper, Archie is smirking. ‘Thank you; no.’ ‘Americaine?’ The way he says American makes it sound infinitely more alluring than it is. ‘New York City? San Francisco?’ ‘Neither.’ ‘Ah non?’ The charming waiter is undeterred and, if not genuinely interested, a master at feigning it. ‘Miami? Los Angeles?’ ‘No again.’ Before he has a chance to sling more guesses, she flashes him a fantastically false smile and asks, with impressively feigned sweetness: ‘Would you bring me some sugar? S’il vous plait?’ The charming waiter dips and flurries away in search of le sucre. The copy of Le Figaro across the table lowers to reveal a pair of crisp blue eyes. ‘You’re taking sugar now?’ She gives him a pointed look. ‘Sweet enough and all that,’ he adds. Agatha switches from pointed look to pointed ignorance. Archie reaches for his coffee cup and takes a sip, then settles it back in its saucer, thoughtful. He seems about to resume his reading when he pauses. Dot can see the smile restrained in his lips- ‘You’re speaking French now too, apparently.’ ‘I can’t speak French.’ ‘It would seem you can.’ ‘One word doesn’t equate to fluency.’ He tilts his head. ‘I think you’ll find that was technically four.’ Agatha sips her espresso again, slowly. If she hopes it will end the exchange, she is wrong. ‘It was very good.’ ‘Don’t.’ ‘Parlons Francais aujourd'hui?' ‘No.’ ‘Pourquoi pas?’ ‘No.’ ‘Toi ne-’ ‘No. I told you, I can’t speak French.’ ‘C’est pas v-’ ‘Spouting it at me at every opportunity is not going to make me fluent; it’s going to make me angry. I don’t know what you’re saying. Speak to me in English, or not at all. Preferably not at all.’ ‘N’abandonne pas.’ ‘You’re wasting your time.’ ‘On verra.’ ‘Give me that paper if you’re not reading it.’ Her voice is as impatient as a tapping foot. Archie smiles broadly, suddenly. The paper is gently folded and extended across the table. His fingers are still grasping the end of it when he says, in his crisp, perfect English: ‘As you want.’
Le Figaro is open for all of a second before it is thrown back on the table in disgust. Agatha stands up and throws back the rest of her espresso, angrily muttering something about wanting to breakfast in peace as she scoops up her pastry in a napkin and barges for the exit. The charming waiter stops in his tracks, newly unsure what to do with the pot of sucre he has heroically procured (and possibly unaccustomed to the feeling of seductive failure) They watch her bluster across the pavement, through drizzle and pedestrians, until she is out of view. Archie turns his eyes from the window and smiles. He reaches again for the paper, which sits in an inelegant heap on the table. Feeling brave, Dot ventures a joke. ‘I guess she didn’t like what it had to say?’
‘No indeed, Dottie.’ He flicks a page over, eyes glistering with mischief. ‘This is a French paper.’

Provençal-ish air-fryer pork meatballs with red pepper rouille, inspired by bouillabaisse.
Back when we lived in Stamford, I blogged about making Alton Brown’s “Positively, Absolutely Not Real Bouillabaisse” while we watched Day for Night/La Nuit Americaine, and while making the stew is kind of a pain due to the sheer number of ingredients it requires, the non-fish flavors have stayed with me ever since, because they’re really classic and tasty. I mean, couldn’t they be used in another…

A Pain That Is Not Private || Lara Mimosa Montes
“I was dreading going back to my teaching job. I don't use that word lightly: dread, but imagine teaching Amiri Baraka to mostly white students of a certain experience. It was something else. Fight or Flight. This was shortly before the events in Charlottesville, Virginia. So I opted for f/light.” —Lara Mimosa Montes
There is a time and place in the world for abstraction. When my mother left Puerto Rico for the first time, the year was 1968. Against my unknowing. We hesitate to say what intimacy is and whether or not we have it. I keep trying / to teach my students that / stream-of-consciousness is / this, not that / this / activity fails. We know it does because each of us leaves the room / feeling like barbed wire— snarling behind the barricade (because) at some point, we stopped feeling (like language could say). So we went without while some others embraced. Notice (after the emptiness) : a pain that is not private. °That light, this pain (what never translates).

The LaLaurie Mansion
New Orleans
Madame Delphine LaLaurie was a New Orleans socialite who had a nasty habit of torturing and murdering black slaves. However, no one knew what Delphine was up to until a fire broke out in her Royal Street mansion. When bystanders entered the home, they found mutilated slaves chained to the walls of the slave quarters. A mob stormed the house, destroying almost everything in sight, and the LaLauries fled the city, never to be seen again. Authorities later found bodies buried in the yard, including one belonging to a small child.
In 1832, Dr. Louis LaLaurie and his wife, Delphine, moved to their splendid quarters at 1140 Royal Street. They were wealthy Creole socialites who entertained on a grand scale, and Madame LaLaurie was reportedly both beautiful and intelligent. Louis, a native of France, was her third husband. New Orleanians who attended affairs at their home were wined and dined with the choicest food and wine, on the finest china, linens, and silver imaginable. What was unimaginable was the horror behind the facade of gentility.
While the institution of slavery is indefensible, it nevertheless existed in the antebellum south, and certainly in New Orleans. Madame LaLaurie, it is told, had a particular fondness for the practice, and owned many slaves who were methodically brutalized to keep them "under control." There were many rumors, reportedly fanned by the "jealous Americains" who were systematically excluded from all things truly Creole. Among other things, it was said that in the LaLaurie household, slaves disappeared on a regular basis. A neighbor reported seeing Delphine chasing a slave girl onto the roof of the house with a whip. The child jumped to her death. It appeared that Madame LaLaurie enjoyed her many luxuries at the cost not only of her slaves' freedom, but also of their lives.
On April 10, 1834, a fire broke out in the LaLaurie home, and when the volunteer fireman came to the scene, they discovered the horror hidden inside the facade of gentility. Dozens of slaves were reportedly chained to the wall in a secret attic. Some were in cages, and body parts were strewn about haphazardly. Horrible mutilations had been perpetrated, and some slaves cried out begging to be put out of their pain and misery. The monstrous and insane experiments carried on by Madame LaLaurie were beyond anything imaginable, either before or since. It was a sight that no one in the city could comprehend, and the population was sickened, calling for Delphine to be brought to justice.

Casablanca: Facets of Film
Once the story and characters are set, and the script is written, all that’s left is to set up the cameras, special effects, costumes, music, sets, and performances. Nothing to it, right?
These elements listed above are, while not quite as vital to a story as the plot and characters, absolutely intrinsic to any movie. These are the factors that make a film a film, and it is sometimes up to these factors to take a good movie and turn it into a great one, coming together to best express what is going on in shorthand, without having to explain it to the audience. In short, these elements are storytelling devices, designed to further the plot, make the movie look good, but never overshadow the core story and characters. It’s a delicate balance, but when it works, it works very well.
So yeah, they’re pretty important.
Any film worth its salt has to know how to use these elements, no matter how big or small, to benefit and enhance the existing story and characters. The skillful use of these factors combined with a great script and good characters can make the difference between a ‘good’ movie and a classic.
Such is the case for Casablanca.
Even though Casablanca didn’t have a very large budget, (initially thought to be just another standard film, nothing special) the filmmakers made the most of what they had, effectively using the tools at their disposal to turn Casablanca into a masterpiece.
Today, we’re going to be taking a look at the storytelling devices used to do that in order to answer this question:
How does Casablanca use its movie-making tools in order to get across the story it wants to?
Let’s take a look, starting with something that would seem pretty simple: the camerawork. (Spoilers below!)
Like I’ve mentioned before on this blog, there’s more to cinematography than pointing a camera at the actors and letting it roll. A good movie crew knows how to use a camera to focus on the emotion and impact of a scene, and a better one knows how to use a camera to add a new layer of depth to the scene, and the film overall. Casablanca is certainly the latter.
One of the most interesting things about the visual style of Casablanca is the way it’s shot. It’s not filmed like the typical drama or romance film of the 1940s, rather, it’s shot very much like a film noir, full of dark lighting and use of shadows to emphasize the ambiguity of several characters. Notable exceptions include the character of Victor Lazlo, who is rather consistently shot considerably brighter as both a visual and moral contrast to the more darkly-lit Rick Blaine.
On the other hand, the character of Ilsa is lit rather differently; rather than explicitly light or shadow, Ilsa is shot out of focus, always appearing hazy and with a shine in her eyes, making her seem almost disconnected and hauntingly beautiful throughout the film, almost placing her in a different world from the other main characters.
There are a few standout shots in the film, but I would be amiss were I not to point to the cinematography of the ending for the chief example.
Fully cementing the sense of an uncertain future, the ending is shot in a fog, with the mist enveloping the characters as Rick reveals his decision on who is to board that plane. Further emphasizing this is the final shot, of Rick and Captain Renault walking off into the fog until they are completely obscured, swallowed up by the haze.
There are other notable shots throughout the film, of course. The image of Rick talking to Victor, each in their respective lighting serves as a distinct capture of the two characters, and the shot of Rick’s shadow falling close to Captain Renault serves as a vivid and distinctive visual among many. Even the image of Rick, dripping wet and heartbroken on the train station platform, tends to stick with an audience. But there’s more to a film looking good than just the camera.
There is very little that could be considered a use of ‘special effects’ in Casablanca, and what is there is so incredibly dated it’s difficult to take seriously. As heavy an emotional blow as the flashback sequence of Rick and Ilsa in Paris is, it’s hard to ignore that the scenes in the car are one of the most egregious cases of Driving a Desk in Hollywood history. The plane used in the airport sequences is more salvageable, but still not exactly on the same level as effects used in other war movies of the time. Despite the emotional weight of the scenes in which these effects were used, the effects themselves don’t exactly look all that great. But that’s fine. The rest of the visuals more than make up for it.
From Rick Blaine’s iconic white suit to his classic Bogart fedora and trenchcoat, to even the design of club, every inch of this film breathes with well-defined imagery. Every inch of this movie is distinctly Casablanca, dark lighting and all. The set of Rick’s Café Americain is memorable and full of personality itself, requiring very few detours out of it. It’s contained, but it works. The few sets that are used outside of the club are as real-life and gritty as this one, cementing Casablanca as feeling very real and personal.
But Rick’s Café Americain just wouldn’t be the same without the music, thanks to Sam.
The musical score of Casablanca is soaring and moving, but, of course, nothing stands out like ‘As Time Goes By’. Despite the number of tunes that are played (and sung, courtesy of Dooley Wilson), throughout the film, nothing quite says Casablanca like ‘As Time Goes By’. It’s a bittersweet tune that perfectly encompasses the mood of the film, and Rick and Ilsa’s equally bittersweet love affair. But there’s more to the soundtrack than that.
The instrumental music of Casablanca is there for a simple reason: to emphasize and enhance emotion. It more than rises to the task. The music of this film soars and drops with the mood, setting the tone for each scene, always teetering on that line of darkness but never getting too cynical, just like the movie itself. Thanks to the film’s winning combination of simple sets, camerawork, and music, Casablanca is perfectly put together.
Now, wait a minute, you might say. Sets, camerawork and music are all well and good, but they can’t carry a movie by themselves.
You’re absolutely right. In fact, even with all of those elements, Casablanca wouldn’t mean anything now if not for the final, essential ingredient: the performances.
It’s here that Casablanca truly earns its reputation.
Every single part in this film, from large to small, is acted to perfection.
Humphrey Bogart is the cynic with a heart of gold as Rick Blaine, his first ‘romantic’ role, and boy does he sell it. Bogart plays Rick with a perfect blend of compassion and brusqueness, with a quick wit shielding a broken heart. All of his emotions, while not expressed outright, are present in every movement and expression, from guarded love to pained sacrifice, to the simple happiness from days in Paris. The conflict within him is visible, but not overstated and obvious, a perfectly subdued performance for a perfectly subdued character. Examples of note include the scene where Ilsa comes to explain herself to Rick, the farewell note at the train station, and (of course) the scene at the airport from the very end.
Ingrid Bergman puts in a similar performance as the carefully closed off Ilsa, portraying a character in turmoil, torn between two men, and two worldviews. Her own struggles are perfectly realized by Bergman’s quiet strength, and the cracks in the shell that become more apparent towards the end. She portrays desperation, love, despair, and wistfulness, balancing between love and duty in a believable internal conflict that the audience can both see and connect to, and her surprise and uncertainty at the end mirror the expressions the audiences themselves feel.
Paul Henried as Victor Lazlo is outspoken and upright, a good and just man in trouble. He is a patriot, brave to a fault, and yet very human. Henried gets across the humanity of an utterly heroic character who, in any other film, would likely be the hero.
Claude Rains shines as the scummy, sharp witted and dry Captain Renault, perfectly portraying the corruption and friendly relationship with Rick. Rains manages to present a character that we aren’t exactly fond of, but enjoy watching, adding a layer of charm to the conniver and making his turn to the side of the angels at the end that much more believable.
And of course, the other cast plays their parts perfectly. Dooley Wilson, Conrad Viedt, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre all put forth excellent performances for their respective characters, portraying the emotions and motivations necessary without having to explain in dialogue. It’s a one of a kind cast, in a one of a kind film. It’s no wonder Casablanca is considered one of the best acted films of all time.
Every character in this film does their part, each contributing the exact amount with their reserved, but heartfelt performances. It’s a genuine film full of genuine emotion, carried by every storytelling device used in the film that comes together for a final product that’s complex, but not complicated. Every element comes together, resting on the shoulders of the actors to draw the audience in, resulting in a gripping and compelling narrative that’s helped along by the masterful work done by the filmmakers. As a result, the film feels real, if not realistic, grounded in emotion and immensely moving, a film that’s consistent from beginning to end.
Casablanca has long been hailed a masterpiece, a classic, one of the greatest films of all time, and with good reason. Every factor fits together perfectly to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts, a story that has been passed down for more than seventy five years, and is likely to be passed on for seventy five more. Casablanca just works, in every sense of the word and from every angle.
Thank you guys so much for reading! Don’t forget that the ask box is always open for questions, suggestions, discussions, or just saying hi! Join us next time where we’re going to be discussing the behind-the-scenes story of Casablanca in ‘Facets of Filmmaking’. I hope to see you there!

#Repost @brewmell ・・・ Pinte Killer: Le Fermentor 💚 ABV 6,66% 😈 IBU ? 😅 Cheers 🍻 Mélanie ✌️ @lefermentor #ipa #americaine #sabro #juicy #hazy #lefermentor #biereartisanale #biereduquebec #bieredemicrobrassserie #craftnotcrap #craftbeer #craft #beer #beerlover #beergram #instabeer https://www.instagram.com/p/CM-q8pJrcdK/?igshid=n3sxswuef0hx
