Emily doesn’t push. Hotch is stitched together like a rag doll someone barely bothered to mend, and honestly, that alone should be reason enough for him to accept the ride. But the real reason has more to do with the fact that Emily was the only one who waited. And waited. Sat in that impossibly hard hospital chair for hours. So why not.

And it’s just a ride, right?

Wrong.

Because Emily opens the door for him. Emily puts his seatbelt on, leaning in close enough that her breath ghosts over his shoulder. And when she fumbles with the buckle, nervous fingers, he stiffens—barely, but still.

“You didn’t have to—”

“Just wanted to—” She starts, but the words collapse halfway through. Her lips press together, like she’s suffocating whatever excuse she was about to make. “Sorry.” Shuts the door and circles to the driver’s.

“You can turn on the—”

“I’m okay,” he cuts in, shaking off the suggestion before it’s even finished. “Put on your seatbelt.”

Emily tugs it across her chest at the exact same time he speaks. “Yes, sir.”

A beat. And then—

“You’re not about to start backseat driving, are you?” she asks. “Because I don’t handle traffic well when I’m being judged.”

“And yet you insisted on driving me?”

“You’re welcome,” she mutters, starting the car.
