The current rhetoric against TikTok is not only a hypocritical attack on free speech, it’s an insinuation that the only reason people could be critical of Israel is manipulation by a foreign government. There’s no way people from all walks of life could simply be horrified by what’s happening in Gaza; those devilish Chinese Communists must be warping their minds. In fact, the Washington Post found that TikTok was not even unique among social networks for the gap between pro-Palestine and pro-Israel support in public posts. It said: But Facebook and Instagram, TikTok’s US-based rivals, show a remarkably similar gap, their data show. On Facebook, the #freepalestine hashtag is found on more than 11 million posts—39 times more than those with #standwithisrael. On Instagram, the pro-Palestinian hashtag is found on 6 million posts, 26 times more than the pro-Israel hashtag. Any move by elected officials to ban TikTok should be taken seriously; it’s not just about the app’s videos about terrible first dates and secret menu items. Free speech is a principle. When so-called defenders of free speech advocate censorship because they find certain political ideas too dangerous, be very worried.

Gaza Solidarity Played Major Role in Renewed US Push to Ban TikTok – WSJ
The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill on Wednesday that could see TikTok banned in the United States.
The bill would ban the social media platform from operating in the United States or force the patent company Bytedance to sell it to a non-Chinese owner. According to a report published by the Wall Street Journal, one of the reasons behind the renewed urgency to pass the bill could be attributed to Washington’s concerns about the way TikTok users interact with content regarding the Israeli genocide in Gaza. Speaking to WSJ, Jacob Helbert, a member of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said that the US Congress recently regained interest in passing the legislation. “When lawmakers went public last week with their plans, the broad support for the bill caught TikTok by surprise,” WSJ reported. Helbert explained that Israel’s war on Gaza was a turning point in this swift change of attitude.  “It was slow going until Oct. 7. The attack that day in Israel by Hamas and the ensuing conflict in Gaza became a turning point in the push against TikTok,” Helberg was quoted by the WSJ as saying. “People who historically hadn’t taken a position on TikTok became concerned with how Israel was portrayed in the videos and what they saw as an increase in antisemitic content posted to the app,” Helberg reportedly added. The WSJ also reported that Anthony Goldbloom, a San Francisco-based data scientist, and tech executive, “started analyzing data TikTok published in its dashboard for ad buyers showing the number of times users watched videos with certain hashtags”. “He found far more views for videos with pro-Palestinian hashtags than those with pro-Israel hashtags. While the ratio fluctuated, he found that at times it ran 69 to 1 in favor of videos with pro-Palestinian hashtags,” the WSJ noted.

"Nearly half of the US population uses TikTok. It’s the most downloaded app in the country and the world. And last Wednesday, President Joe Biden signed its ban into law.
Members of Congress backing the anti-TikTok bill from both sides of the aisle have tried to emphasize that it’s 'not a ban' — it’s a forced sale. The 'ban' requires Chinese tech company ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, to sell the app to a US-based company within twelve months or the app will be banned in the United States.
ByteDance has responded saying that it will refuse to sell, and that it will instead fight the ban in court. ByteDance believes it can win the court case, based on precedent from federal courts blocking an attempted ban in Montana in November 2023. Former president Donald Trump also tried to ban TikTok twice by executive order when he was in office; those efforts were struck down by the courts too.
Lawmakers are citing data privacy and national security as the primary concerns behind the ban. But others have been more explicit — they are worried about how the app is influencing Americans’ political views, particularly among young voters.
Discussion of the TikTok ban in Congress has been rife with red-baiting and anti-Chinese fearmongering. Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, referred to TikTok as a 'Communist Party propaganda tool.' And Senator Pete Ricketts, a Nebraska Republican, said:
Pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas hashtags are generating fifty times the views on TikTok right now. . . . These videos have more reach than the top ten US news websites combined. This is not a coincidence. The Chinese Communist Party is doing this on purpose.
The senator went on to blame TikTok and the Chinese government for the student protests that started at Columbia University and have since spread to dozens of college campuses across the country on TikTok and the Chinese government.
There is no concrete evidence supporting the idea that political ideas shared on TikTok are more progressive or pro-Palestine than what you find on other platforms or that it skews more progressive than the overall population — with nearly 70 percent of voters now supporting a cease-fire in Gaza. It’s unclear how TikTok’s algorithm handles political content. But one of lawmakers’ greatest concerns is that the platform has offered a new avenue for people to virally spread political messages outside of traditional media.
This is not to say that TikTok doesn’t pose data-privacy concerns. But as Paris Marx writes, TikTok’s opaque data-privacy practices are not specific to TikTok or China. TikTok is a private company. Like all profit-driven social media companies, US- and Chinese-owned alike, there are genuine concerns over data usage — but the TikTok ban won’t fix those.
'The US government’s desire to ban TikTok instead of taking industry-wide action is a good indication that its campaign isn’t really about national security or data protection,' Marx points out, 'but something much deeper: namely the preservation of American economic and geopolitical hegemony.'
In this regard, the federal government sees a lot to gain from banning TikTok. Asserting control over highly profitable Chinese tech companies will help US companies like Meta maintain dominance in the social media space, an important consideration given the United States’ growing Great Power rivalry with China. The ban may also allow the US government tighter control over media narratives, particularly around Israel’s increasingly unpopular war on Gaza and government repression of protests.
I’m a content creator on TikTok, alongside millions of others. TikTok has allowed me to reach millions of people to share ideas about movements for social and economic justice. Recently, I’ve covered the wave of student protests calling for a cease-fire in Gaza and university endowment divestment from weapons manufacturers and other financial ties to Israeli apartheid by interviewing students on the ground in New York City. If TikTok is banned, it means shutting down my voice and the voices of many others who are loudly opposing our government’s support for Israel and spreading awareness of the growing protest movement.
It’s unclear if the ban will be upheld in court. And if the forced sale is upheld, it’s also unclear if twelve months will be enough for a sale to make it through the legal and financial red tape. In any case, it will be at least a year before we see any changes to the app and its availability in the United States.
If the TikTok ban is successful, though, it will serve as a major blow to free speech without actually protecting users’ data. It will mean restricting access to news and political ideas simply because the federal government wants to suppress the ideas that are being shared and popularized on the platform — like opposition to US support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza."

Yes, I like fanfiction...what's this about?
fanfiction FESTA is an idea that won't stop gnawing at my brain. the goal of this FESTA is to share AND comment on as much fanfiction as we're able to as a community! For a whole month!
Crimson will then create 1-3 posts on their blog with links to all the fanfiction sent their way (more details on the process below). Here is an example of what the end product would look like

This FESTA is a combination of many influences, but especially the JCS and the fanfiction writer appreciation event. In fact, we are lucky enough to find guidance and help with the FWAE mods!
Cool! How can I participate?
Good question! We have a lot of ideas but here is the bare minimum we need to make this event a reality!
Writers: writers are encouraged to submit (1) of their fics to be promoted, read, and commented by at least (1) person. This will be done via X/Twitter using a tagging and hashtag system. All submissions MUST be appropriately tagged
Dedicated Readers: a team of readers who will commit to reading at least (1) story submitted by writers, and leaving a positive comment. This role is crucial. We will have a signup session later!
Passive Readers: readers who will organically join this event and leave positive comments on the fics we promo. There is no expectation for this role. Passive readers can read whatever catches their interest. We also hope to have a few games to make this more interesting
Behind the Scenes: a team of mods who will help create content/keep things in order. As of now, we're interested in finding an art mod and perhaps one more dedicated mod to help Crimson. If we can't find mods for these roles, we still plan to run the event
Do we have to write new stories for this?
Nope! In fact, we strongly urge writers to share fics they've written before the start date of the event. And stories they wish had more comments. We want to give no/low-comment stories some much needed love
When will the event start?
We have tentative plans to start the event in February 2025. But a fixed date will be chosen after the Interest Check closes
Is there a limit to what can be submitted?
As of now, each writer may only submit (1) story. We may change this rule depending on participation. In terms of content, we have decided to be a Pro-Ship event. And in terms of word count, we are still deciding what the maximum length should be
