Over 2 million people in Ontario, Canada do not have a family doctor. This did not happen overnight and the number continues to grow as family doctors retire or leave due to burnout. There is no immediate plan to address this. Many, including myself, relied on online doctors for prescription renewals. Going to a walk-in clinic in person with the wait takes a whole day. On December 1st, the Ford government dropped what doctors could claim for phone visits by 80% - the goal was to force family Drs and patients back into the office but really it just decreased access. Now many of the virtual clinics will over zoom call visits but they charge a fee. I looked at 3 websites tonight that charge a fee to see a doctor. It is easy to see how people will feel backed into a corner - really who has a whole day to go see a dr - so they will pay the fee. So it is not just the for-profit clinics doing cataract surgeries when there are empty ORs in hospitals. The federal money offered to the provinces today did not fix this loophole in the Canada Health Act. Ford was the Premier who was given $1 billion for healthcare during COVID but didn't spend it on healthcare...now the feds are going to hand over more of taxpayers' money to be given to private healthcare. And this is just one tiny corner, I'm not even going into the decision to let PSWs give out medication. Healthcare in Ontario is horrible and it will only get worse. #EveryVoteCounts
