On the Eve of Ukraine Visit, PM Modi Emphasises 'This Is Not the Time for War' in Poland
In a significant diplomatic move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Poland, reiterated his stance on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasising that "this is not the time for war." This statement comes just ahead of his planned visit to Ukraine, where the conflict has been ongoing since Russia's invasion in February 2022. The Prime Minister’s message, delivered in Warsaw, highlights India’s consistent call for peace and diplomacy amidst the escalating tensions in Eastern Europe.
Prime Minister Modi's visit to Poland is part of a larger European tour aimed at strengthening ties with key European nations while addressing pressing global issues such as the Ukraine crisis. His message in Poland is a continuation of the position India has maintained since the beginning of the conflict: the need for dialogue and the resolution of disputes through peaceful means. India has consistently urged all parties involved to engage in negotiations and has abstained from voting on UN resolutions condemning Russia, maintaining a neutral stance that seeks to balance its relationships with both Russia and Western nations.
During his address in Warsaw, Modi underscored the devastating impact of the conflict on the global economy, particularly in developing countries. He pointed out that the war has led to rising food and energy prices, disrupting supply chains and exacerbating inflation worldwide. Modi emphasised that the world is still recovering from the economic shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a prolonged conflict would only deepen these challenges.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India's efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine, including the dispatch of medical supplies and relief materials. He reiterated India's commitment to supporting peace initiatives and working with international partners to find a resolution to the crisis. Modi's message is expected to resonate during his upcoming visit to Ukraine, where he is likely to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top officials.
Modi’s stance is seen as a diplomatic balancing act, reflecting India’s strategic interests and its role as a key player on the global stage. As a nation with deep ties to both Russia and the West, India has sought to mediate rather than take sides, advocating for a return to peace and stability in the region. His call from Poland, urging an end to hostilities, reinforces India’s position as a proponent of peace and dialogue, and sets the tone for his discussions in Ukraine.
