Sleeplessly yours,
Rizal Class Assessment no. 2
Develop your list of historical figures (4) that you consider to be national heroes. Justify your chosen list and recommend which historical figures may or may not fall within the criteria set by the National Heroes Commission.
What makes somebody a hero? Who can say who should and should not be your national hero? Who establishes the criteria and who is the most competent to define them? According to Ambeth Ocampo's presentation at the Philippines Readers and Writers Festival four years ago, no one can compare which fruit is more fruit among the fruits. The National Heroes Commission was established after former president Fidel Ramos issued Executive Order No. 75 on March 28, 1993, which was entrusted with studying and recommending national heroes to be acknowledged for their character and services to our country. Heroes are those who have a concept of nation, aspire to and fight for the nation's freedom, make a significant contribution to a system or life of freedom and contribute to the nation's quality of life and destiny. Lead his or her people to articulate their thoughts and think for the future, especially in the younger generations, according to the criteria established by the committee.
Describing a quality of a national hero is like defining a quality of a saint for ordinary people who know less than 10 major figures in our history. National heroes for them are like superheroes whose great traits, skills, compassion, and excellence have made them idolized. Andres Bonifacio, Conrado Benitez, Jose Baza, and Ladislao Diwa are the four historical personalities, in no particular order, that I have deduced from what I have read and what I have determined through our perceived definition of national heroes. Men of our country, selfless patriots, and humanitarians.
Bonifacio has been one of the greatest men in our history considering his selfless service for our freedom by organizing a secret organization that finally accepts the reality of armed struggle on July 7, 1892 in a house on Calle Ilaya with Ladislao Diwa, Teodoro Plata, and Deonato Arellano. Despite being a middle-class guy in comparison to the ordinary living conditions of the period, he educated himself by purchasing some of the most intelligent literature of that day and reading them eagerly even late in the evening with the help of his old gas lamp. Among these books were Robiespiere's The French Revolution, Eugene Sue's The Wandering Jew, Hugo's Les Miserables, Rizal's Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, The Ruins of Palmyras, The Holy Bible, International Law, Penal and Civil Code, Lives of the Presidents of the United States, and the novel of Alexander Dumas and his son. The historical significance of his movement, which began as a freemason and took the form in armed struggle for Philippine sovereignty and independence, is still felt around the world in the formations and methods of modern Revolutionary movements. The revolutionary principles and objectives of the masses of people are still valid and alive today. In this era of political persecution and military aggression, we are not only experiencing an economic and health crisis but a major humanitarian crisis.
Next is Jose M. Basa, a patriot and a leader in the Propaganda and Secularization Movement. Pepe Basa, as he was known, was not only a diligent businessman but also a passionate supporter of our country's political development, devoting much of his time to participating actively in the movement and charity activities. He supported patriotic causes with both of his liberal beliefs and his wealth. He created the Association Filipina in Hong Kong, and by his aggressive and sustained campaigning and activism in Hong Kong, he ignited the revolutionary movement that culminated in the events of 1896. "He is an extraordinary man..by nature benevolent, with an appearance marked by sweetness of character and gentleness in society; he is, notwithstanding, a man of exceptional merit because of his great energy and political activity... I therefore, love and admire Pepe Basa whom I sincerely respect; and I can't conceive of anyone who will try to reduce his true worth," said Rizal, who visited Basa in his place several times. In reality, he was the one to whom Rizal entrusted his library. Rizal, as we all know, is a literature lover beyond all things.
Our next real-life hero, unlike Bonifacio and Jose Basa, was not a well-known or well-established historical person in our country. Ladislao Diwa, a guy who founded the Katipunan after realizing certain occurrences that would drive the movement from reform to armed conflict. "Had it not been for the events of 1872, I would have been a Jesuit," Rizal once claimed. Similarly, Ladislao Diwa would not have joined Andres Bonifacio in founding the Katipunan if his father had consented his clerical vocation. Apart from citations in history books, no one remembers Ladislao Diwa as part of the first Katipunan triangle with Andres Bonifacio and Teodoro Plata, and despite his service to the Philippine independence movement, no one realizes his ceaseless patriotic activities that widened Katipunan recruitment except historians. Ladislao Diwa, like many Filipinos serving and fighting for our human rights and political liberation, was subjected to untold torture and rebel hunting. Matter of fact, after surviving and being liberated from torture and imprisonment, Ladislao, like many among whom names no one had heard unless they died in our news announcement, is still courageously decided to continue his fight in national democratic struggles.
Last but definitely not the least is Conrado Benitez, dubbed as "Father of Journalism", sportsman, journalist, constitutionalist, lawyer, educator, civic leader, and economist, among others. Conrado F. Benitez is best described by all of these professions and vocations. He resigned from the University of the Philippines and was named the first editor of The Philippines Herald after accepting the editorship of "The Citizen", the first Filipino weekly paper in English. One of the "seven wise men" was entrusted with drafting the final version of the Philippine Constitution. He never missed an opportunity to aid the masses and improve our political and economic condition by actively participating inside and advocating the Philippine Labor Movement, as well as serving as a delegate to several International Labor Organizations. Benitez truly played his part in our nation-building and even the president in his time that both his critical enemy in democratization and friend for whatever reason accepted and acknowledge his important role in our society.
We can't say that orange is more than fruit when compared to apple. Heroes exist as a result of their objective and subjective commitment to humanity. Nobody can simply add and delete their contributions to our country. We can evaluate them according to their historical achievements to our country, but we can't tell who isn't as heroic as their contemporaries. From the standpoint of a true man of humanity like Jose Rizal, Del Pilar, and Bonifacio, and from the perspective of another revolutionary, revisionist, and structuralist factions like Marx, Adam Smith, and Woodrow Wilson, they are all pursuing their vision for the betterment of humanity, of particular classes, and of a certain race. Imagine a world in which everyone collaborates together to make progress. What really important is we acknowledge our commonality more than our differences as we make progress, looking to our strengths rather than limiting ourselves with our weaknesses.

Higit
Lara Cecilia L Pono
//Free verse poem
May hihigit palang pag-ibig
May hihigit palang pag-ibig
May hihigit pala, may hihigit pala.
May hihigit palang pag-ibig
Sa pagbilis ng kislot at pintig
Dahil ang isip ang nagsusulat
At ang puso mo ang nagmumulat--
Na ang gawi ay para sa bayan
Kahit hininga maging kabayaran
Habang ating pag-ibig, bawal, sakal
Sa tingin nila’y di magtatagal.
May hihigit palang pag-ibig
Sa pag-akda ng ‘yong ala-ala
Dahil ang natitira ay makiling
Sa masasaya, mas pansinin--
Na lungkot ay madaling masupil
Kahit damdamin ay di mapigil
Habang ang tawag niya’y, bulong, “Tulong!”
Sa tinigin mo’y tunay na pagbangon.
Ngunit sa pagtangan ko sa iyong sinapit
Ay alam kong di ko na maibabalik.
May hihigit pala, may hihigit pala.
- Leonor Rivera
* per checking dates, Rivera was 15 when Rizal left for Europe, and never saw each other again. Rizal died age 35, hence mentioning “dalawampung taon”

We had an exam on Rizal yesterday and I'm scared of getting it back because my professor is probably face palming so hard. The question was, "What were Jose Rizal's last words?" and I answered "Fuego" (fire). I wasn't even trying to be funny. He died via shooting barrage. And I had always assumed he gave his own demise's go signal because he's metal af.

Philippine Institution (PI 100): GABAY SA PAG-AARAL 1
MGA SANGGUNIAN Capino, Diosdado G., Maria Minerva A. Gonzalez, and Filipinas E. Leoncio Co
When I enlisted PI 100 classes in CRS, I didn’t check the professors in the UP Prof Guide page anymore. I just enlisted those that fit my schedule and I did not pick those with just a few demand. I was so happy when I managed to get an STS class and also PI 100 because those classes really have high demand. And then that’s when I checked who my professor is.
The first thing I thought was, “Luh pwedeng pang-character sa Noli/El Fili name niya ah haha”. And then I saw some reviews saying they really learned a lot from Sir. And despite some other reviews saying he’s strict, I still felt lucky that I got his class.
Fast forward to the first day of our class. I expected him to be old but not that old. I could say he’s probably the oldest professor I had. But man, he was really funny. Though he made fun of some of my classmates, I still found his humor entertaining. He discussed his requirements: class participation, oral exam and a written final exam. But he kept on saying that we should read the whole Noli and El Fili for us to be able to love our being Filipinos. He even said we won’t read it if he didn’t threaten us so he’s going to give a grade of 5 to anyone who will not read the two novels. Idk but I felt excited to loving my being a Filipino through his class. He gave us an early dismissal that day.
Next meeting, he discussed about the Spanish colonization. I love history professors who discuss as if they were there when what they’re discussing was happening. Like they were just telling stories fresh from their memories. And Sir was one of them. I think we were dismissed 30 mins. early but I surely learned a lot from just a 1 hour discussion from him. I won’t ever forget what he said about the fact that we’re still carrying the burden of Spanish colonization up until now.
Last Saturday, I received a text from a friend saying something like condolences because of what happened to Sir Leoncio. I was shocked as hell. I just can’t believe it. Actually, even now.
I already learned a lot from you, Sir, even for just two sessions. And I know I would have learned a hell lot more if you were still here. But I know that He knows the perfect timing and plan for everything. So now, I’m just thinking maybe you were so happy when you met Rizal there and you’re probably having a lot of conversations with him. I bet he’s happy for all the things you’ve taught about him in the 100 years that you were teaching PI 100 (Sir said this to us huhu).
Maybe in the future, we could talk and I could still learn from probably one of the best PI 100 profs in the university. But for now, rest in peace sir and enjoy your unlimited time with Rizal. :)
