I LOVE the version of Lucius in your fic Prison of the Phoenix. He's different from a lot of portrayals I've seen. Why did you decide to write him how you did?
A lot of the fun of writing a book-accurate fix-it fic comes from taking the events of the book, and removing JKRs (simplistic, misleading, sometimes just weird) narrative framing. Slytherins = baddies, Gryffindors = goodies, you know.
This is especially fun with Lucius Malfoy, who just like… isn’t very evil? Chamber of Secrets is his most villainous book, and I’ll get to that, but otherwise? He tries (unsuccessfully) to get the animal that attacked his kid killed. He donates to hospitals (but in like, an evil way.) He is a hilariously incompetent Death Eater, and then he's Voldemort’s punching bag.
That’s kind of the point of Lucius. He looks the part. He commits to the aesthetics of the thing, with the hair and the peacocks and the snake-wand-cane. He likes the mystique of walking into a room and knowing that you know (but can’t prove) he’s a dark wizard. It allows him to be… kinda lazy. He can coast on his family name, money, reputation, privilege. I really think that if you sat Lucius Malfoy down and asked him to walk you through all the wizard-supremacy talking points he wouldn’t be able to do it. He’ll toss around words like “mudblood” and “mudblood-lover” no problem, but in the end he doesn’t really care. Lucius is not a true believer. The way the world is set up benefits him tremendously and he doesn’t want Voldemort back. That’s just text:
“Use your brains, Ron,” said Bill. “If they really were Death Eaters… I bet they’d be even more frightened than the rest of us to see him come back. They denied they’d ever been involved with him when he lost his powers, and went back to their daily lives… I don’t reckon he’d be over-pleased with them, do you?”
Lucius and friends had too much to drink at a sporting event, put on the old outfits (again with the aesthetics) and started levitating muggles. Which obviously isn’t GOOD, but they’re not killing or torturing, or furthering any kind of agenda. It’s important that Barty is so insulted and pissed off by the way they’re basically playing Dark Wizard that he casts the Dark Mark to “show [them] what loyalty to the Dark Lord meant, and to punish them for their lack of it.” Which kicks off most of the events of the book.
Prison of the Phoenix is going to have a companion, parallel fic told from Harry’s POV (tentatively titled Harry Potter and Malfoy’s Suspicious Interest in Werewolves.) Lucius does show up in that one, and I was honestly surprised by how much more frightening and intimidating he is when filtered through Harry’s perspective. Because with a Severus POV… when Severus is used to spending time around Voldemort, Greyback, Bellatrix, honestly Dumbledore and Sirius Black…. Lucius is not scary. Lucius wants to buy presents for his son, go to high-profile events with his beautiful wife, and wear a variety of snake-themed accessories and extravagant hats.
I wanted a kind of college-roommates-who-stayed-friends feel for the Severus + Lucius relationship, because they are friends. Sirius calls Severus Lucius’ “lapdog,” and Narcissa calls him Lucius’ “oldest friend.” Lucius is also part of the welcoming committee when Severus is first sorted into Slytherin. He’s five years older (I think Jason Isaacs is the only Harry Potter adult the same age as the character he plays), which would have affected the dynamic between him and Severus a lot in school. Personally, I think it makes sense for Lucius to be a little protective of this brilliant half-blood kid with no money. And as an adult, there’s some guilt mixed in there as well. Severus probably would not have been sucked into the Voldemort thing nearly as deep or nearly as fast if it hadn’t been for Lucius, and the war kind of destroyed him. Lucius remembers a younger Severus who was modding potions, inventing spells, coming up with cheeky nicknames for himself, and that person is gone. That’s a big part of the reason he’s so invested in the Severus/Remus relationship in Prison of the Phoenix. Something about Remus has managed to wake up parts of that younger Severus, and Lucius thinks that’s fantastic.
I also think Lucius might be the character who knows Voldemort the best. He’s one of the only Death Eaters who Voldemort calls by their first name (Bellatrix, Severus, and Draco are the others) and he’s weirdly familiar with his “slippery friend” Lucius, addressing the whole speech about how/why he returned to him, for some reason? Anything that helps Voldemort make sense as a person I’ll take, and to me it makes sense that young Tom Riddle charmed Abraxas Malfoy, Lucius’ father, first. The dates are right, and he’s exactly Tom’s type - rich, pureblood, probably easily flattered (let’s be honest) and sitting on a pile of magical artifacts. It’s very Hepzibah Smith vibes, is what I’m saying. And rich, posh, popular seventeen year olds don’t join cults. But if Lucius’ father was already in a cult…
It also makes sense to me that Tom Riddle got sort of stuck when he killed Marvolo Gaunt, and made his first horcrux at sixteen. He has this fascination with sixteen year old pureblood wizards (so Barty, Draco, and Lucius would have fit this profile.) He sort of wants to be them, but also sort of wants to break them? It’s messy, and complicated. It’s creepy and compelling, that Lucius is aging but this spectre that’s dominated his life isn’t.
And so when Lucius gives Ginny the diary in Book 2… it makes sense that he’s just trying to get rid of it. He was just at Borgin and Burkes selling dark artifacts, but knows that the diary is worse. He needs to make sure it can’t possibly be traced back to him. So he gives it to the daughter of the head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. (It is an enchanted muggle artifact, after all.) If Arthur Weasley finds it and deals with it, fine. If Ginny is discovered with it in a way that blows up in Arthur’s face, also fine. If it does get to Hogwarts and does open the Chamber of Secrets - well Draco is going to be fine, and it might undermine Dumbledore. If it was really important to Lucius that the diary rid the school of muggleborns… he would have given it to Draco and had him use it. Or given it to Draco, and told him to leave it somewhere for an enemy to find. But Lucius doesn’t do that, because he doesn’t want Voldemort back and his politics just aren’t that important to him.
The one trait I did give Lucius is being an unrepentant wife guy. (And I mean… it doesn’t contradict anything. There isn’t anything in the books to suggest that he isn’t a wife guy.) EDIT: I cannot believe I forgot the little "it's going to be okay" wrist squeeze Narcissa gives him right before he passes Voldemort his wand. This meta does a fantastic job getting into who Narcissa is, and I am officially justified in writing them just as googly-eyes about each other as I want. Also going full Gomez and Mortica makes them a better foil for the Weasleys, and the (not typically on the same page) Arthur and Molly.

Thanks for this ask - Here is part 2 of a series of little drabbles to see what Tobias does with the pumpkin pie throughout different periods of his life (and in some different worlds, too!) I hope you enjoy it as much as Tobias (and I) love pumpkin pie!
Book: Open Heart (pre-series) Characters: Tobias Carrick, Ethan Ramsey Rating: Teen Words: 1,003 Summary: It's the Hopkins years, and if you think Ethan & Tobias's rivalry takes a break for the holidays, you would be mistaken!
A/N: Participating in @choicesholidays Winter Event - "You did what with the pumpkin pie?" and @choicesdecember2024 Day 1 - Naughty and Day 8 Spices.
It wasn’t a typical night in Ethan and Tobias's Baltimore apartment. Tonight, neither man would be found hovering over textbooks. There was no studying and no cramming for exams, but their competitive nature wasn't taking a break - tonight, it just took on a different flavor.
The smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin engulfed their home, spreading out to the hallways. It smelled delicious, even if the kitchen looked like a lab experiment gone horribly wrong. Flour dusted every surface, and bits of dough were scattered everywhere. The joyful strains of Christmas music played in the background, but they were barely audible over their neverending bickering.
Tobias was proud as a peacock, holding up his pie crust as if it were a trophy. “This... this right here is art. Crisp, buttery perfection so flaky and delicious, it has been known to make angels weep.”
Ethan’s eyes rolled back in his head. “Angels don’t give a shit about your pie crust, Tobias. But they do care about flavor. It’s all about the pie filling, and I’ve perfected the ratio of spice to sweetness in mine.”
"Are you calling me bland, Becky?" Tobias smirked. "Please, I'm waiting for you to add raisins to the mix, just like you did to your potato salad on July Fourth."
This had been going on all day. All it took was Tobias casually mentioning his mother’s pumpkin pie recipe - then Ethan insisted his was better. Anyone who knew the two of them knew there was only one way this could end, and that’s how the two future doctors found themselves elbow-deep in flour, vying for culinary supremacy.
Ethan’s girlfriend, Vincenza, sat perched on a stool nearby – close enough to bear witness but far enough away to avoid becoming a casualty. She was as patient as she was beautiful, quietly sipping her wine as she watched the chaos unfold. “For the record, if this ends in a tie, I’m declaring myself the winner just for sitting through this. It’s not exactly how I planned on spending date night.”
Dina, Tobias’s “flavor of the week,” leaned against the fridge with a grin. The raven haired law student had quickly adapted to the whirlwind that was Tobias Carrick, and tonight was no exception. “Hey, I’m just here for free pie,” she laughed. “But I have to admit, you two are taking this far too seriously.”
“Too seriously?” Tobias gasped, clutching his rolling pin to his chest. “There is no such thing as ‘too seriously’ when it comes to pumpkin pie.”
“For once, you're right,” Ethan said without missing a beat. “This is serious business, Dina... it's not for the faint of heart!”
By the time they placed the pies in the oven, the kitchen looked like a war zone. Vincenza snapped a photo for posterity—or, as she put it, for “evidence when you inevitably blame each other for this mess.”
About an hour later, the two pies emerged from the oven, golden and fragrant. Dina blindly placed a sticker with the letter A and another with the letter B at the bottom of both pies. Then, the four of them sat around the small table for the taste-off.
Vincenza went first, thoughtfully tasting a bite of Pie A. She was impressed. “The crust is really good – buttery, flaky... and the filling isn’t bad either. This is off to a solid start.” She cleansed her palate with a sip of wine before moving on to Pie B. Her eyebrows shot up. “Wow! This one is spicy! Great texture... it has a bite. They're both great, but it's B for me.”
Dina was next and eager to offer her opinion. “Pie A feels classic, like something that would be served on antique china at a fancy Thanksgiving dinner. But Pie B is more... adventurous. It’s like a modern twist on an old classic. It’s great, but A is more my speed.”
Tobias and Ethan each tried to maintain poker faces as they bit into what they assumed to be their own creations. Tobias declared A the winner, while Ethan insisted it was B.
Vincenza peeked under the pie pans. “Not that it matters since it’s a 2-2 tie, but Pie A belonged to Tobias, and Pie B was Ethan’s.”
“A tie,” Tobias groaned. “I demand a recount.”
But Ethan merely shrugged, taking a bite of Tobias’s pie. “Honestly, I’m impressed. Your crust is better than I expected. If you’d just used my pie filling, you might’ve actually won this thing.”
“You two are insufferable,” Vincenza said, shaking her head with a laugh. “But at least we get two great pies out of this!”
As the night went on, Dina stood up with a yawn. “Well, I’m exhausted,” she said, giving Tobias a pointed look. “I’m going to head to bed.”
“I’ll be right in, gorgeous," Tobias winked.
But before he made his way to his room, Ethan caught his friend grabbing the remainder of his pie filling and a can of whipped cream from the fridge out of the corner of his eye. Tobias almost made a clean getaway when Ethan’s voice called out.
“What are you going to do with that?” he asked, eyes narrowed.
Tobias paused in the doorway, his signature mischievous grin spreading across his face as he turned around slowly. “Oh, nothing wholesome, my friend. Nothing wholesome at all... do you really want to know?”
Ethan groaned, running a hand down his face. “Please, forget I asked.”
“Done,” Tobias nodded, “but unless you and Chenza are planning on making some noise of your own, you may want to put up the Christmas music. Capiche?”
“You know, getting through medical school is hard enough without having to deal with you.”
“Please,” Tobias laughed. “I keep things... interesting.”
Ethan stepped into the living room and joined Vincenza on the couch, laughing despite himself. He turned up the volume of the radio before slipping an arm around his girlfriend. Life with Tobias was always unpredictable—but it was never, ever boring.

-Malfoy family headcanons-
My personal headcanons about the Malfoy family.
The Malfoys were well off but weren’t always as rich as they are now. They grew their wealth after Armand Malfoy was given Malfoy Manor and the land in Wiltshire by King William I. They dealt art to various royals, bought (and stole) land and invested in high-class muggle businesses. Malfoy Apothecary is one of their biggest income sources. They have branches in England, France, Germany and Italy.
They were very open about marrying half-bloods to preserve their bloodline rather than turning to inbreeding and looked down on the families that did. After the passing of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy in 1692, most upper-class wizarding families started believing that consorting with muggles and half-bloods was shameful and the Malfoys started denying that they ever did. The very strong blood supremacy ideation is more modern.
Their pale features are a result of their distant Veela ancestry and old family magic that ensures every Malfoy is born with white blonde hair, making it easy to sniff out infidelity and bastardry.
Lucius Malfoy I was the very proud owner of a Veela hair core wand made with his great-grandmother's hair. It was passed down as a family heirloom and currently sits in a glass case in Lucius Malfoy II’s office in Malfoy Manor.
Because of so many family members turning to magic to solve reproductive complications, their biology is permanently altered to ensure that heirs will always be produced.
Arranged marriages aren’t as common for the Malfoys as they are for other families. Most of them married for love unless an arrangement was absolutely necessary.
Most Malfoy’s are sorted into Slytherin though there are a few that were sorted into Ravenclaw.
The family has always kept white peacocks as pets as a display of their wealth. The peacocks are also given as wedding presents to welcome spouses into the family. Narcissa’s is named Perle, which is french for pearl.
While house elves are used for almost everything, it is uncommon in the Malfoy family for them to raise the children. It’s seen as disgraceful to leave your child with a house elf for longer than a few minutes at a time. This causes children to become very attached to their parents. Lucius is horrified when Narcissa tells him that they had a nanny elf growing up.
Lucius Malfoy II's mother was German. Her name was Renate. She met Abraxas during his travels after Hogwarts. Lucius teaches Draco to speak, read and write in German. Draco is fluent by the time he is four.
After having Lucius, Abraxas and Renate have two more pregnancies. Both girls who died before they were named.

Only Friends and Engaging with Queer Male Media as a Cishet Woman

I’ve had some good conversations this week with friends as we’ve been unpacking our early reactions to Only Friends, which has only just begun getting into the messy dynamics we know the show is going to explore. One of the things that has come up in conversation is our different reactions to the scene between Boston and Top in the shower stall, and how we each read that in terms of consent, sexual coercion, and what it says about each of the characters. Some of us were relatively unfazed by the scene, finding it to be a fairly realistic depiction of a pushy aggressor and his conquest who is not that into him, but also not really opposed to getting sex anywhere and any way he can. Some were more uncomfortable, recognizing behaviors we might call assault in other contexts and wondering whether we should be condemning the character or the scene for the behavior depicted.
For me, this discussion brought up a lot of my previous fandom experiences, taking me all the way back to ye olden days when Queer as Folk (US) was airing and the majority cishet woman fandom spaces were scandalized, scandalized I tell you, by some of the aspects of gay male culture it depicted. It was not the first or the last show to do so, but it stands out in my mind as an important cultural moment at the turn of century as I was coming of age, when the internet was booming and the proliferation of online fandom spaces was rapidly accelerating. Because QaF did it all—casual sex, cruising, group sex, very public acts of indecency, aggressive boundary pushing and peacocking, open and polyamorous relationships, cheating and betrayal, age gaps—and it depicted it all quite explicitly, which made a lot of people uncomfortable. Especially women who were used to thinking about sex and relationships through two primary, and heavily socialized, lenses:
heteronormative romance, and
heterosexual rape culture.
Let’s take a moment to unpack those terms. Heteronormative romance is a big, broad term that I’m using as a kind of container for a lot of things, including patriarchal structures, misogyny, rigid gender roles, purity myths and fetishization of virginity, courtship rituals, promiscuity and respectability politics, the madonna/whore complex, sex as an act primarily for breeding and procreation, expectations of sublimating sexual desire in service of caretaking for others, and so on. Basically, all the bullshit cis women get jammed into our heads from birth that gives us so many hang ups about sex and love. With heterosexual rape culture, I am referring to the undeniable culture of sexual violence women also endure in a majority heterosexual society, in which we are in constant danger of having our boundaries transgressed, being physically and psychologically hurt, and then being told it doesn’t matter because our personhood has always been in question and never mattered as much as any one man’s power or pleasure. I’m not going to drop a bunch of citations for the above because this is tumblr and I have escaped the icy grip of graduate school, but if any of these ideas are unfamiliar to you, google is your pal (and please read about intersectionality as it relates to these concepts while you’re at it, because there are layers of identity that make these dangers worse for some, like our trans and BIPOC sisters, and all of this is undergirded, as ever, by white supremacy).
So, yes, engaging with media about sex is fraught for women, especially when that media does not conform to our heteronormative ideas of morality that have been shaped by all of the above, and particularly when we as individuals have not done the work to unpack and interrogate our socialized beliefs, which is often the case for cishet women especially. Many of us instinctively cringe away from unromantic depictions of sex. Many of us can’t stand cheating and betrayal in our love stories. Many of us shy away from media that depicts the unfortunate reality of grey and dubious consent. All of that is valid, to an extent, and rooted in the way we have been taught to think about this stuff from birth, and the ways we’ve had to adapt to survive.
But, here’s the thing, girlies: most of those socialized hang ups I just talked about? Do not apply to a story by, for, and about queer men.
Before you start yelling, here is your disclaimer: of course patriarchy and misogyny also hurt men. Of course rape culture also exists in queer communities, and of course some queer people engage in heterosexual sex, so these are not mutually exclusive categories of people. And, importantly, cishet women are not the only ones who struggle with these tensions—just the ones who are most relevant to this particular post.
So, after that long and winding road, back to the point: this debate about the bathroom scene in Only Friends is the same shit that’s been debated in majority female fandoms around depictions of queer male sex since time immemorial. And whatever your personal feelings are on that scene, or the no doubt numerous other depictions of questionable romantic and sexual etiquette and dubious consent coming our way in this show, what it boils down to is this: can a majority cis woman fandom step outside of our own conception of sexual morality to engage with this show not with judgment, but with curiosity about what sex and relationships look like for queer men? This show has an entirely queer male writing and directing team. It is made with love by people of the community, for the community. They know what they’re about, they have resumes demonstrating they are damn good storytellers who understand safe sex, consent, sexual health, and sex work, and they are here to tell us a story grounded in their reality. BL has been moving in fits and starts toward depictions of sex that are more honest about queer male experiences, and Only Friends, spearheaded by the Jojo Tichakorn Phukhaotong (who demonstrated quite ably that he has a firm grasp on consent, sexual assault, and the damage that dubious consent can cause in The Warp Effect), is the next step in that evolution. The key point is that sexual activity simply does not mean the same thing or carry the same associations and hang ups for queer men as it does for cis women. With that in mind, can we try our best to process and critique this story on their terms, instead of our own?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Only Friends is not going to be a good time for people who are looking for romantic depictions of relationships and sex or invested in identifying heroes and villains amongst this cast of characters. This show is about deeply flawed people hurting each other, rooted in the lived experience of the Thai queer male community—and those of us who do not share all of those lived experiences may not understand the nuances of every single thing that is happening. We can be sure that the characters will all be wrong sometimes and they will all do things we think are stupid or reckless or unkind. Does that mean we can’t have empathy for them? Do they have to act in a way we think is morally “correct” in order to love them? You don’t have to be comfortable with the things these characters do, and it’s certainly valid to point out when you think lines have been crossed. But attempting to sort them into “good” and “bad” camps is pointless, and moralistic judgment of their behavior is out of place, particularly when it comes from a place of trying to force them into our own irrelevant frameworks for sexual politics.
And with all that said, I am passing the baton over to my dear friend @waitmyturtles, because there’s an entire aspect of the intersectional cultures at play here that I have barely touched on—Only Friends as an Asian queer story that is building from a specific lineage of Thai queer media. I’m gonna let her take the mic for that part, and say thanks to her, @bengiyo, @neuroticbookworm and @wen-kexing-apologist for reading this over and helping me think through what I wanted to say here, and shoutout to @williamrikers whose post I also linked to above.

Falling hard | Part 12
(Masterlist)
The hardest battle against insecurity and memories is fought, leaving space for feelings of quiet realisation and chats about something important.
⚠️ References to past use of drug, dissociation and rape because we're tackling the Amarantha-Rhys dynamic here.⚠️
There were different influences battling for supremacy in his head, so many memories and thoughts barreling at full speed in his brain. That made him cranky, of course, but thankfully he was alone and could be as cranky as he wanted to.
At first he thought that is was Lucien's absence making him feel that way, because his boyfriend, his partner was out with another person. Then he thought that is wasn't the fact that he was out, but the fact that he wasn't out with them, but at the bottom of everything he knew there was fear.
His therapist had been right about that, for sure. He'd never been a stranger to the fear of uncertainty, and the feeling of insecurity sometimes came as easy as breathing. He was afraid of so many things and he had kept them inside since Lucien had announced him that he and Feyre had set a date.
Both the booklet he'd bought on polyamory and his therapist recommended considering his partner's relationship as something private for them. And he wanted to give Lucien that space... but in the distance he'd created insecurity was in full bloom, because despite all the recommendations, he wanted to know what was happening so bad. Did that make him nosy? Did that make him disrespectful towards Luce and Feyre? Did they make out? Would Lucien be coming back smelling of her?
Rhys sighed and kept unloading the dryer. One of the best tips he read online in his hours of scrolling content about polyamory, was taking advantage of the time alone to do thing one enjoyed. So when Lucien had announced his absence for the night and had taken hours to get ready (he was such a peacock) he'd prepared a light dinner ready to warm up after working out. He'd gone out for a run to sober up his wild thoughts, then he'd come home, said bye to Lucien. Dinner, laundry and watching movies. Lucien was not a movie fanatic as Rhys, so he didn't really have that much time to watch everything he wanted. It was the perfect occasion: a long movie from his to-watch list and tackling the to-iron pile.
It had been the perfect evening, with the muscles pleasantly sore from the run, until the end credits started rolling and the thoughts came back. Fortunately there was still some ironing left. He refilled the distilled water and waited for the thing to beep for the right temperature. Being two men in an office field meant double the shirts to iron. He generally didn't mind, it was precise work, but it could become tedious over time. It didn't help that they both loved wearing shirts. He lifted a new one, rumpled and wrinkled, from the pile: one Luce's. They wore different size, Rhys being broader in shoulders and a little fuller in the torso, but he could have recognised his boyfriend's shirts from style only. His whole wardrobe, honestly. His preference for notch lapels, compared to peaks; his hatred for striped shirts, pocket-less jackets and utter preference for front-pleat pants. The warm earthy tones, the browns, maroons and beiges, mixed with the classics. How bad he looked in cold grays, and absolutely stunning look he had when wearing green.
That same evening he had feared seeing him leave the house in green, he had felt relieved in seeing that he hadn't used the same colour he'd worn for his first date with him. He could still remember the picture they painted, going out to dinner in central London, somewhere way too fancy, but lovely nonetheless. Both so worried not to ruin what felt promising for both of them.
It was the first time he'd felt alive and connected to someone after Amy, Amarantha Smith-Rogers. With her deep wine-red hair, so different from Lucien's ginger, thin lips, high cheekbones and her unmistakable thirst for power and control. She'd never made him feel connected, on the contrary: she'd done her absolute best to lure him, to groom him from the moment she'd laid eyes on him under the very eyes of his father. The bastard had thought it flattering that the right-hand woman of the best lawyers in the city had taken an interest in his nineteen-year old son. She'd been careful, that shark, she'd taken the time to make him believed that he was utterly enamoured. But then she'd proceeded in cutting him off from all his relationships, she'd molded him to the image of the rich, bored and questionable young man she loved to have on her side.
For her - Because of her, he reminded himself - he'd started smoking, tried drugs because she wanted more fun, drank way too much while retaining that aura of fake success his father loved. On the other hand he lost weight, lost the spark for life, started dissociating during sex. And Amarantha loved having sex a lot, meaning he would have to dissociate a lot, so much he had realised too late that everything that had happened between them was abuse. Abuse, rape and assault.
Since them, things had changed so much: his family had picked him up and shoved him towards the closest help center for trauma survivors. At the beginning he'd hated them for it, but now he was glad. Therapy, quitting smoking, exercising with Cassian and Az everyday... it was like being born again. No one knew, not even him, what he would have become, what person he would have grown to be without Amy and the wreck she left, but the Rhys that had survived had learnt to love the life he'd made for himself. And then Lucien came along, the rest was history.
But his past made him doubt: what if Feyre treated Lucien like Amy treated him? What if the infatuation he felt himself for her brought him to the same situation he'd lived before? What if he fell back into that?
All of that, always because of her.
In those moment he truly hated Amy. She'd wrecked him so much that he could think about falling for a woman in the fear of thinks repeating themselves. She'd manipulated his mind so much, like a Pavlov-trained dog, to jump in fear at the slightest trigger. He inhaled deeply and exhaled from his mouth, trying to concentrate on the feeling of the steam on his face, the light smell of clean laundry and the flip-flops on his feet.
"Get out of my head," he murmured to no-one in particular, or to the shadow of Amy in his mind. "She's not her."
Amarantha could not exist in the same space where he'd built safety, so he looked around at the house he and Luce had chosen, renovated and decorated. The sofa where they'd slept on while waiting for the bed frame (that had come two weeks later than planned). A month of back-ache for both. The dark wood bookshelves, the carpet and the wall colour they'd chosen together. That house spoke of love, of respect and kindness, and Amarantha would not survive in the same room with any of those.
His phone beeped while he was ironing the last of the shirt. The beep meant Lucien was coming home. He longed to see his face, to make sure he was happy as he wanted him to be. He eyed the polyamory booklet on the coffee table and turned off the TV, still stuck on the "choose a movie" screen. Luce was coming home for real: he would not abandon him, he would not chose someone else over him.
As soon as he heard the keys unlocking the door and the steps in the hall, Rhys felt restless: he wanted to crush him in a hug. But when he saw the giddy eyes and swollen lips, he felt the need to know everything he wanted to share. He looked happy, a bit disheveled, maybe, but to happy.
***
He froze as soon as he saw Rhys standing behind the ironing board in the living room. He had almost hoped to find him in their bedroom, so to have time to fix his appearance a bit, and not looked as if he'd just made out with someone. Thing that had definitely happened.
He didn't want to hurt him, to offend him with his own happiness but then he saw the smile growing on his boyfriend's face and the spark in his eyes. "You don't look sad," he said, without knowing why.
"Not anymore," answered Rhys, before turning of the clothes-iron and reaching him. They hugged, and Lucien felt the longing in that hug.
"Did you feel weird at home alone?" he asked right away, after separating from the hug. "Do you want me to go wash up?"
"Why would I want that?"
"So that I don't look like I just came home from a date?" he offered, but Rhys smiled with understanding.
"I was just thinking about that. I didn't know how I would have felt. My brain... gave me a hard time, tonight, but not you. You're never a source of insecurity."
"It doesn't look like you had a great time, Rhys. I'm sorry, if you want-"
"No, no. I'm actually glad you came home looking so smug - he chuckled - the thoughts were about Amy. I... had a fear Feyre would treat you like she treated me. I know it's stupid, but sometimes I can't help it."
Lucien felt a wave of sadness in knowing he'd left his boyfriend alone with some of his worst memories. "You should have called me, I would have come right back."
"No, I didn't want to ruin it, and there's something liberating in knowing I can deal with her ghost on my own. I've banished her before, I did it again tonight. And something that made me focus, was also waiting for you to come home."
The simplicity of that confession, eased the know in his chest. Lucien started taking off the jacket and the tie, before plopping on the sofa. He patted the cushion beside him. "Come here, we can sit together for a bit."
Rhys followed him and sat sideways, propping his feet on Lucien's legs, like they sometimes did. "You know that I had told you that I didn't want to know what you did with Feyre?"
"I remember it clearly."
"I think I have changed my mind," Rhys said, almost shyly. "I don't want any personal details, because I still stand on the fact that those belong to you and Feyre only, but I would like to know how you felt... I want to hear how happy you are."
"No pressure at all," joked Lucien. "I didn't think you'd wanted to know."
"Me, too. But, as I said, I had a lot of time to think tonight."
"So the idea of this thing involving a woman is not a problem anymore?"
Rhys scoffed. "It will not go away overnight. But I'm working on my labelling problem here."
"I wouldn't call it a problem," offered sympathetically Lucien. Since discovering it, Lucien had never had a problem in calling himself bisexual. On the other hand Rhys had grown up in a too conservative household and then traumatised to explore his own sexuality. When Amarantha had come along, he'd given from granted being straight, not even considering the alternatives. He knew that because he still remembered with a laugh Rhys's famous words when they'd made out, heavily, for the first time: Does this mean I'm gay? "You'd never explored your identity on preferences, and you don't have to if you don't want. But I think it's normal to be a bit surprised if you have thought yourself gay and now you feel something for a woman."
"If only I could sue her again for psychological damages..." he said under his breath. "But we know she would win again, that shark. She really fucked me up."
Lucien patted Rhys's legs. "Don't think about her, though. I'll tell you about what I felt."
Rhys shook his head, as if it could shake out Amarantha from his brain. "Okay, hit me with it. Is it Safe for work?"
"Hey, do you really think I slept with her on our first date?! What did you take me for?"
"I know for a fact you can be a bit of a slut," said Rhys, shrugging and smiling. "Or maybe that's just for me."
"Oh, shut up, you'r insufferable."
"But, please continue!"
"As I was about to say: it is sake for work because we didn't sleep together... - his tone softened - but it was a hell of a date. I liked it so much, and I felt the tension, it was there. She's really lovely to be with, good company, she's got a story to her and I liked that she opened up a bit about it."
"Does she know of the prosthetic eye?" he asked with a wiggle of the eyebrows.
"Not yet, but I think she noticed. It didn't sound relevant. We chatted, and I swear I felt butterflies every single time she looked at me."
"Aw, you're so smitten," teased Rhys, but Lucien didn't have it in himself to deny it.
"I am, totally. She could have asked me the moon and I'd have given it to her. She was so stunning, and then while listening to the music playing she kissed me," just the thoughts had his face heating up with blush, and he knew Rhys was drinking that sight in like a thirsty man. "She kissed me like she couldn't help herself, just a brush of lips. But then when I drove her home, it was like we couldn't keep apart."
"Did you make out in the car like bloody teenagers?!"
"We did, oh... we did. It was..." he was suddenly at a loss for words. "It was amazing, but that doens't even come close to describing it. Do you know the feeling when you finally get to kiss that person? It was like that."
Rhys smiled and took his hand. "Very familiar feeling, I assure you."
"How does it make you feel that I made out with someone else?" he asked bluntly, but Rhys answered without hesitation.
"Not someone else, but Feyre. You made out with Feyre, and it makes me feel happy for you and for her, since I know how much of a good kisser you are. I am also happy that I had time to sort out some of my thoughts and that I watched a good movie. I also ironed three weeks of laundry, you're welcome."
"So no hard feelings?"
"They were never in the picture. I'm glad you had a nice date, I'm serious. I hope you can have other dates like this in the future, and come home all giddy and fully of-" he stopped himself from finishing the sentence. Lucien stared at him, almost daring him to finish it.
"Full of what, Rhys?"
"Do you want me to say it, so that you can face your own feelings? Or do you want to say it?"
"You say it, please" he whispered, feeling a lump form in his throat.
"Full of love. You love her, Luce. You love her already."
"I do," he answered, with almost a strangled sound. "And I don't know if I need to be sorry for it, or just bask in the feeling."
"Don't feel guilty. That's exactly why we're doing this poly thing. You love her, and that's fine. Do you love me?"
Lucien nodded vehemently. "I love you so much, Rhys. It feels like a contradiction, but I love both of your completely."
"And that's fine to me. Keep loving me and keep loving her, if that's what makes you so happy."
Lucien exhaled a long sigh, reclining his head on the back of the sofa. He felt his eyes prickle from the tears he didn't want to cry. Rhys was showing so much mercy for his feeling, and at the same time battling his greatest enemy. And Feyre was opening up to him, making him explore parts of himself he hand't thought about in a long time. It took a bit to calm down, but after lowering his gaze again on Rhys, he found him quiet and content on the sofa beside him. No reprimand in his eyes, no jealousy.
"Wash up, we're going to bed," Rhys said, easy, before standing up and offering a hand to Lucien. He took it and was crushed into another hug. He smelled good, he smelled like home. There was so much love around him that he almost felt a high he didn't want to come down from.

And now the final part! Thanks for the nice comments on the last two posts, it rly means a lot!! ^ ^

Day (technically 19 but) 21: Berry
(I know I accidentally skipped this one in the last post I am sorry. Anyway this is the result of me watching too many JimmyHere YLYL streams while drawing)

Day 22: Fungal
"Ah... Our favorite. Fate has smiled upon us."
"The textures work so well together!"
"...A bit too savoury. We shoulda put honey in it!"
(Imma be honest. I didn't get this line on my first playthrough, so when I did on my second I about broke down crying. Fate has smiled upon them,,, ;v;)

Day 23: Flight
"We can fly as high as our hearts wish to! Soar to UNSEEN HEIGHTS!"
(The fact that Kabbu is terrified of heights but loves bounceshrooms is very underrated imo. I think he wants to overcome his fear someday and maybe learn how to fly on his own...)

Day 24: Plant Enchanter
(What did you guys name your Chompys? I named mine Amarylis, intentionally spelt wrong due to character limits. I just think it's a pretty word :>)

Day 25: Lost
"Everyone left on the rescue ferry...but I chose to stay. There's such a soothing beat… How could I leave this place behind? I've gotta find where it comes from...I've...gotta..."
(You ever wonder what happened to the bug who left that note on the Peacock Spider's island? I mean, they're obviously dead, but...I still wonder.)

Day 26: Alternate Universe
(You ever make an AU based on a single line of dialogue & some concept art that gets stuck in your brain and refuses to leave? Yeah, that's what this AU is. The placeholder title is 'The Upcoming Storm', and is an answer to two questions: What if the Roaches followed through with their plans for a Thunder cordyceps? And what if one of Leif's ancestors decided to look into their disappearance?
So this is Cerice, their ridiculously energetic lesbian daughter [who they don't know is their daughter yet; she doesn't remember that they're her parent either] and host of the Thunder cordyceps! Don't worry, Grandpa and Muze still exist - Grandpa's her son. However, Team Snakemouth is split into two teams - Team Snake and Team Mothden - but they still work together. I might make a separate post abt it if anyone wants me to ^^)

Day 27: Song
(Who's a better character for this prompt than the composer's self-insert, lol)

Day 28: Medal
(I am a very firm believer in Poisoned Leif supremacy. Sorry Poisoned Vi and Kabbu, smashing bosses over the head with glaciers is just so viscerally satisfying)
[I didn't have any ideas for Boss Rush, sorry]

Day 30: Bee
"You know...I was about her age when I came to my first festival. Everything was so much cooler than the boring Bee Kingdom! It really made me want to see the world!"
(I really wish they elaborated more on Vi deciding to become an explorer after her first festival! It's a very cute motivation & had a lotta story potential ;^;)

Day 31: Everlasting
"The Usurper, Grasping For Power..."
(Hoaxe is a fun final boss but god DAMN did he kick my ass a hundred times over. It's a good thing I decided to max my rank and stock up on Queen's Dinners, Berry Smoothies & Miracle Shakes the 5th time around)

which devi sprite do you use?
short answer after a LOT of internal debate (dear anon you have no idea how seriously i take such matters) the khasi sprite (the indian one with the bright green eyes not the unsettling white eyes 😭). here's some context if you gaf
for all of my mcs i always have a "main" i consider canon (which often includes me mix-and-matching aspects routes. for the case of devi, it's a mix of all the routes. passion/freedom when she's younger and pride and legacy as she's older but with more of an emphasis on pride/legacy because i associate pride/calm personality with the green eyes more ig also pride/legacy route supremacy) i can't really do the "multiple alt mc thing" even if i really want to. sorry i need one fave i don't have the energy budget to obsess over multiple of them it would break me
i mention all of that because the whole "choose different mcs for different slots!" doesn't really work for me i NEED to pick one as a favorite which is also stressful because i'm incredibly indecisive
my personal faves are the khasi and the kashmirian sprites (though i specifically adore the pre-timeskip dravidian sprite she was the prettiest/had the most "natural" beauty to me. tho i did consider that my amala is the dravidian sprite so a part of me probably wanted to switch it up) so ofc after a lot of back and forth i was like "ok lemme just ask roomies et al." and they all ofc said kashmirian because she has soulful/mysterious/divine eyes
the thing was by the time i asked them, i got so used to playing as khasi devi, the thought of switching made me miss her and her AI eyes? 😭 it's the whole thebes or memphis eva debacle again (also to me kashmirian devi belongs to tanu and dravidian devi belongs to jbby so i can't just steal someone else's sprite that's rude) i ADORE brown eyes but i will always have a soft spot for green eyes (absolutely ethereal/match my "birthstone"). it used to be gray eyes because of CS2019 but now they either freak me out or i'm kind of tired of seeing them after overexposure on these apps
so anyway what made me eventually side with khasi devi for good probably? four main reasons: 1) blue (sharma family color) and green (eye color) is associated with peacocks and i LOVE peacocks, 2) live out my aishwarya rai dreams because she's MOTHER and so my devi and ram can be the baddest duo with green eyes (in my head saraswati has brown eyes like her twin and most of the other basu fam AS SHE SHOULD re: tanu's brown-eyed saraswati edits), 3) a lot of devi's outfits bring out her green eyes and make them pop, and 4) mirania caliz. that's it
mirania has the divinely dark eyes full of expression and all the other attributes i loved about kashmirian devi's eyes and she's also desi so i didn't necessarily need devi to have the same eyes because i want my mcs to be at least a LITTLE different. ty miranisa u saved meeee
the end
not me making it seem like one sprite decision is a make-or-break decision 😭😭 whoever made it through whatever the hell this is, ur a real one and i'm gifting u a basket of chocolate eggs
#devi's one of my fave mcs across all vn apps so tysm for the ask!! me when people ask me stuff -> 🥺💗#speaking of which i need to finish my dorandevi fic ughhhh my faves#romance club#asks#mir's musings 💬#kali: flame of samsara#deviya sharma

Streaming Wars 2.0: The New Era of Digital Entertainment

The entertainment industry has undergone a seismic shift over the last decade, with Streaming Wars 2.0 taking center stage as the driving force behind how we consume media. What started as a disruption of traditional cable TV by trailblazers like Netflix and Hulu has now evolved into an all-out battle for supremacy in the digital entertainment space. Today, the competition is more intense than ever, fueled by new entrants, innovative content strategies, and evolving viewer habits. This article explores the dynamics of Streaming Wars 2.0, examining the key players, their tactics, and what the future holds for this fast-changing landscape.
The Rise of Streaming Wars 2.0
The first wave of the streaming revolution was led by Netflix and Hulu, which upended traditional TV by offering affordable, on-demand content. However, Streaming Wars 2.0 marks a new chapter, characterized by the arrival of media powerhouses and tech giants. Platforms like Disney+, HBO Max, Peacock, and Apple TV+ have entered the arena, pushing established players to adapt. Unlike the early days, when content libraries were the main draw, this phase is defined by exclusive originals, live sports, and aggressive global expansion. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the shift to streaming, as homebound audiences flocked to digital platforms, intensifying the fight for their attention.
The Contenders and Their Game Plans
The streaming market is now a crowded battlefield, with both veterans and newcomers vying for dominance. Netflix remains a heavyweight, with over 230 million global subscribers, while Disney+ has quickly gained traction with its exclusive Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar offerings. HBO Max capitalizes on its premium Warner Bros. catalog, and Amazon Prime Video integrates its streaming service into the broader Amazon ecosystem. Apple TV+, on the other hand, focuses on high-quality originals to stand out. Traditional media giants like NBCUniversal (Peacock) and Paramount (Paramount+) have also joined the fray, leveraging live sports, news, and beloved franchises to differentiate themselves.
Content: The Heart of Streaming Wars 2.0
In Streaming Wars 2.0, content is king. Platforms are pouring billions into original programming to attract and retain subscribers. Netflix’s Stranger Things and The Crown, Disney+’s The Mandalorian and WandaVision, and HBO Max’s House of the Dragon and The Last of Us are prime examples of how hit series drive success. Amazon Prime Video’s $1 billion investment in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power highlights the high stakes of content creation. International hits like Netflix’s Squid Game and Money Heist have also demonstrated the global appetite for non-English content, prompting platforms to expand their regional offerings. Live sports have emerged as another key differentiator, with services like Peacock, Paramount+, and Amazon Prime Video securing exclusive broadcasting rights.
Changing Viewer Habits and Market Dynamics
The success of streaming platforms hinges on their ability to adapt to shifting viewer preferences. Today’s audiences demand personalized, on-demand content and seamless cross-device experiences. Binge-watching has become the norm, while niche platforms like Crunchyroll, Shudder, and BritBox cater to specific interests, reflecting the trend toward content fragmentation. However, the growing number of streaming services has led to “subscription fatigue,” with cost-conscious consumers rotating subscriptions based on content availability. To combat this, platforms are introducing ad-supported tiers and experimenting with innovative pricing models.
What Lies Ahead for Streaming Wars 2.0
As Streaming Wars 2.0 rages on, the industry faces both opportunities and challenges. Technological advancements like 4K streaming, Dolby Atmos, and AI-driven recommendations are enhancing the viewing experience, while emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) could redefine content delivery. However, rising production costs, regulatory scrutiny, and the need for sustainable business models remain significant hurdles. Mergers and acquisitions are likely as smaller players struggle to compete with deep-pocketed corporations. Additionally, platforms must address the growing demand for diversity and representation in media to stay relevant.
Conclusion
Streaming Wars 2.0 has revolutionized the entertainment industry, offering viewers unparalleled choice and convenience. As the battle for dominance heats up, platforms must strike a balance between innovation and accessibility, quality and quantity, and global appeal and local relevance. The competition for screen time shows no signs of slowing down, promising an exciting future for both creators and consumers. So, grab your popcorn and get ready — the show is just getting started.
