HOLLYWOOD — The big studios in town — and most audiences — have never quite figured out what to do with writer/director David Lynch, even though such films as Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man all earned him Oscar nominations. After all, Lynch, who started off as a painter, has always marched to the beat of his own weird inner drummer, paying little attention to trends or, some might say, reality as we know it. Now the highly influential auteur is confusing more people than ever with his latest film, Inland Empire, a three-hour epic shot on video that stars Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons, Justin Theroux, a sitcom family wearing rabbit suits and a bunch of hookers in a dreamlike drama that floats between gilded mansions in Poland and the gritty sidewalks of Hollywood. What does it all mean? Naturally Lynch, whose credits include Eraserhead, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks and Lost Highway, has no intention of trying to explain his films, but here, in an exclusive interview, he happily talks about his approach to cinema, the challenges involved in making Inland Empire and the joys of post.

PL:
W latach 60. XIX w. Moes rozbudował korpus pałacu od wsch. i zach. zasypując kanał otaczający wyspę. Budynek pełnił funkcję mieszkalną i biurową.
Podczas I wojny światowej w sierpniu 1916 r. pałac został wysadzony, w latach 30. XX w. częściowo rozebrany, a w latach 1961-1973 odbudowany i przeznaczony na muzeum.

Branicki Palace, Choroszcz, Poland
In the mid-18th century, through inheritance, Choroszcz was acquired by Jan Klemens Branicki, who built his summer residence on the northern edge of the town.
From 1725 to 1730, the first brick palace was constructed on the island located at the southern end of the canal. In 1757, this palace was demolished due to significant damage caused by moisture, and in its place, a new building was erected in 1759, modeled after the original palace. The entire complex was designed with strict symmetry, composed in the French style of entre cour et jardin, with the palace preceded by a grand courtyard and an entrance courtyard, which was accessed through a gate flanked by a guardhouse and a service building. On both sides of the entrance courtyard, two wings were built between 1760 and 1764: a kitchen wing and a guest wing, as well as two guest pavilions near the palace. The palace was surrounded by a park with a cross-shaped canal along the main axis.
During the November Uprising in 1831, the palace was damaged and remained unused for the following years. In 1840, the tenant and later owner of the estate became Christian August Moes, who built a textile factory in place of the manor. In the 1860s, Moes expanded the palace structure to the east and west, filling in the canal surrounding the island. The building served residential and office purposes.
During World War I, in August 1916, the palace was blown up, partially demolished in the 1930s, and rebuilt between 1961 and 1973, designated as a museum.

been lurking on your blog for a while and i find your new jeans write ups interesting. it's like the cookie song doesn't bother you so you're okay with it?
***
Hi Anon,
Story Time
Some years back, I moved to the US for work. I'd learned English at a young age, lived and worked with English-speakers and thought myself to be very fluent. Anyway, one day I had a business proposal put in front of my desk. I won't explain what exactly the product was, but the long and short of it is that at some point during the brainstorming session, "two girls one xyz" became the catchiest, most fitting tagline. My team had a good mix of old and young people who came from diverse backgrounds. We could all speak English and considered ourselves well versed in slang, but nobody in the team caught the reference until 2 weeks before launch, when in one of the campaigns, it sounded like "two girls one cup".
Now, for anyone who doesn't know what that phrase is, don't bother googling it. The gist is, I quickly learned that in America, you never say "two girls one cup". At least not in public. Everywhere else, this line doesn't mean anything, but in America and certain online communities, it means everything. By the time we found out, it was too late to revamp the campaign to change it, so we instead tweaked it to become a bit quirkier so those who caught the reference won't be totally put off by it. And overall the project was a success and caught on well in Germany, Poland and the UK, but if we didn't catch that reference in time, the campaign would've been a disaster. The way we caught the reference was someone outside the team, a local American, who immediately flagged it the minute he saw it in our outlook report. All of us fluent English-speakers had some vague idea of the various ways the campaign would look and sound, but nobody attached the meaning of "two girls one cup" to it.
And so, maybe that's why I buy the explanation offered by Ador. I can very easily see how an English professor at a Korean university, a couple of Scandinavian songwriters, and one Korean DJ, wouldn't know a Eurocentric slang interpretation of an innocuous English word. Because I myself, the first time I heard Cookie, didn't get any sexual undertones or innuendos. The song honestly just seemed cute to me… the puns in Korean were cute. Also, “taste it, smell it, bake it…” for Korean sweets and desserts, all that isn't odd to say. I mean, people here plan their whole days around trying out a new café and savouring a new sweet on the menu like it's a life-changing experience. It's fun and cute to attach that level of attention and importance to your sweets. The connection with CDs was obvious at first glance too (the CDs are huge in the MV so it's hard to miss), and given what I would call the ‘café culture’ in Korea, the play on words in Cookie seemed honest to God adorable, and a lot of my Korean friends and family (the few who listen to k-pop) felt the same. It probably sounds like I'm reaching here but overall I didn't think this was a big deal anyway.
International k-pop stans felt differently, but k-pop stans in general are easy to rile up, and even if Ador indeed had some ulterior motive, either way I don't really care.
I don't care for the same reason I don't care that Beyonce used the 'spazz' slang in her song, for the same reason I don't care Chaeyoung from Twice went around the US in a Q-Anon/nazi t-shirt, for the same reason I don't care about XG saying they've got 'opps', for the same reason I don't care that Mamamoo/Shinee have done black/brownface and never apologized for it, for the same reason I don't care that Florence Welch is apparently a Satanist, for the same reason I don't care Bang PD is likely fucking someone half his age...
And so on.
It's not because I don't understand the implications of all these issues, but the standard applied in stan twt for what is considered 'problematic' and 'cancellable' doesn't impact how I feel about music and the artists. I decide all that for myself.
And I like Cookie and NewJeans.

Day Seventy-Three
So this is annoying and awful: Schools across US respond to vague shooting threat circulating on TikTok.
The Superintendent sent a message last night to parents and staff basically saying our district and the local PD are aware of it, there haven’t been any threats specifically targeting our schools, etc, etc... But students were a bit spooked today, especially the seniors. Mrs. Z reminded us in our morning PLC that it was around this time of year when they were freshmen that the lockdown happened, and a lot of them had been talking about that lately.
So you can imagine how we all felt when the fire alarm went off unexpectedly during Block 3.
That’s during APUSGOV for me. I was mid-teach about economic policymaking in response to the pandemic (real world relevance, woohoo!), and I jumped about a foot into the air. I managed not to swear, though, so that’s good.
My class and I evacuated along to the gym (it’s a separate structure, so it’s our winter evacuation point) with everybody else, and the fire department came and cleared the building. After about ten minutes or so, the Principal let everyone know that everything was okay, it was a faulty censor that tripped the alarm, and we could head back to class.
My seniors and I resumed the discussion we’d been having about various legislative and executive actions, including the CARES Act and American Rescue Plan. I even showed them information about ESSER grant funds in our school district (super real world relevance, woohoo!). There’s a slick pamphlet with easy-to-read graphs and explanations about how the money’s being allocated on our district’s website. It’s great as a teaching tool for this lesson, and my students were actually pretty fascinated by it. So, despite a bit of chaos midway, I’ll take the W on this one.
My world lesson was about the rise of far-right nationalism in Europe in response to the refugee crisis of 2015, and also about the fight to liberate territory in Iraq and Syria from ISIS. It wasn’t quite as attention-grabbing as yesterday’s lesson, but students were still engaged, and it’s starting to become clearer to them how the situation at the border of Belarus and Poland happened. One of them even said it was like putting together a puzzle, which it is. More pieces tomorrow!
I know a lot of students won’t come to school because of the threats, because we’re likely to have an increased police presence, etc... but we’ll keep on keeping on.

The Fern Flower, Bracken FernMythology and St John's Eve / mythology Many myths and legends surround bracken. It was said to grant perpetual youth and repel evil. Folklore is even referred to in Shakespeare’s Henry V The spores of the bracken fern were reputed to confer invisibility to whomever gathered them at the only time when they were said to be visible—St. John's Eve Midsummer Also in Baltic and Slavic counteies countries it is believed that ferns actually bloom and its magic flower. Pd. ferns have not blooms (Latvian: papardes zieds) By the way to tonight 23 to 24 lth is also Latvian Līgo the only day where such flower might bloom. It can provide the ability to understand animals and earthly riches but careful because it is linked to the spirit world. It is so linked to fertility in pre-Christisn traditions. Lithuania, Ukrania, Estonia and other countries have similar folklore. In Ukraine, Belarus and Poland, the holiday is practiced on the eve of Ivan Kupala Day, also Midsummer. Some speculate the flower is really a species of Rue and not a fern but turn red on midsummer. #līgo #bracken #fernflower #folklore #mythology #greenfairy #midsummer #legends #fairycore #baltic #slavic https://www.instagram.com/p/CQer0ffnC_h/?utm_medium=tumblr

SKAM FRANCE LANGUAGE & CONTEXT S3E5
Hello again!
As you’ll understand, the same slangs I explained before are used in this (and every) episode. Therefore, I don’t necessarily need to explain the following words that you’ll be able to find in the previous posts : meuf, chanmé, grave, pécho, chelou, ouf, vénère, gros
To see the previous language & context : Episode 1 - Episode 2 - Episode 3 - Episode 4
Go back to episode 4 for some explanation around the word MEC.
Here, when Eliott asks “Je suis ton premier mec ?”, the context leads us to understand it as guy, but obviously it implies boyfriend since they’re kissing on a bed, right?
Imane 08:04 “Bien sûr c’est pécholand” I already explained pécho (verlan for chopé aka to catch/to get someone) and we just add “land” to make it as territory/country kind of thing (England, Poland, Disneyland). You need to be pretty young to use this term like this since it’s mixing verlan and english basically.
Lucas 14:26 “Je suis pas… une folle” / translated as “out there” or “a queen”… So. It literally means “a crazy feminin person”. It can be quite insulting for a woman, or it can be said as a joke just like “she’s crazy!” speaking of a girl friend who does something a bit different. BUT. The other -much more- insulting meaning is when it’s used to describe a gay man who would not conform to the masculinity norms. This is how Lucas is using it here, and it’s definitely not beautiful to hear at all.
I talked about “PD” before as an homophobic insult, well “la folle” is an other one. Feminine nicknames are a way to insult gay man in general actually…
Lucas 15:03 “des paillettes en forme de teub” / “swing glitter-shaped cock” Teub is verlan for Bite = cock (Tebi/Teb/Teub). It’s already rare to use “bite” in public, so the verlan version of it is definitely for teenagers and young adults!
At the end, Arthur says a few insults towards Lucas that are quite interesting to translate and explain -“ça fait 2 semaines qu’il casse les couilles à tout le monde” / “It’s been three weeks he’s getting on everyone’s nerves!” – “ça me casse les couilles” literally means “it breaks my balls” and even girls use this expressions pretty often to be honest… You say it to express how something is pissing you of. -”Il fait la gueule tous les jours” / “He’s moping around everyday” “Faire la gueule” is a very common expression. “Gueule” means face in a vulgar way (it has other meanings too). But in this expression it means looking unhappy, not being social, moping around all the time. Now if you say “je lui fais la gueule”, if it comes from you (Je/I), it means you’re gonna ignore/not being friendly with someone bc you’re angry at them. -”il va les payer sur la vie de ma mère” / “he’s gonna pay for it, on my mother’s head” – “sur la vie de ma mère” (on my mother’s life) is very vulgar, especially since it involves your mom obviously…
You can hear Basile say “Yes!” a couple times in english. Usually we say that in english to express our happiness after something we just got or won.
“Genre” An other word you might hear many times per episode. It’s a verbal expression only in the way they use it. It means “like” most of the time or “as if” as in “ I don’t know…like, he could have told us / As if we could trust him”
Finally, I think everyone knows this, but “fuck” in french is “putain”. You hear it all the time in the show, and in real life too… haha. We say it so often and so fast that you barely hear the “pu” part sometimes, juste “ ‘tain”. (it means prostitute literally)
Now, just a few word on the song at the end and his singer/composer. Eddy De Pretto has come into the public scene last year, as a french rapper/variety singer who happens to be gay and talks about very openly in his songs. His lyrics are very poetic and raw at the same time. And it’s a very very strong move to include him and one of his songs in Skam. I recommend to everyone - learning french or not - to go listen and find translations to his songs (every song, really). In the few lyrics of La fête de trop (=the party that was too much) we can hear at the end, he talks about partying and using drugs, then about being hurt, bleeding (just like Lucas) and covering it, and the last sentence is “Je luis de paillettes et me réduis au K.O” = “I’m shinning in glitter and knocked out unconscious”....

Bentonite Market Size, Share, Demand & Trends by 2031
Increasing oil drilling and construction activities across the world is expected to create increasing demand for bentonite between 2021 and 2031, finds Future Market Insights (FMI) in a new study. According to the report, the market is expected to reach US$ 2.37 Bn by the end of 2031. Through the course of the forecast period it is expected to record solid growth, especially since developing economies are expected to offer lucrative growth opportunities.
Bentonite is a highly colloidal clay mineral containing variety of accessory minerals such as quartz, feldspar, calcite and gypsum. Properties such as water absorption, swelling, viscosity, hydration and thixotropy makes bentonite a valuable material across various industries. Chemical and mechanical properties of bentonite materials can be altered through various additions and combinations of raw materials, which is based on application or use of finished product.
Bentonite is known for its versatile nature and application in numerous industries such as construction, oil & gas, food, pharmaceutical, foundry and among others. Of these, the oil industry is expected to remain dominant, accounting for nearly one-fourth of bentonite sold globally.

With oil and drilling activities pacing up, the U.S. is expected to account for 88% of bentonite sales in North America
Bentonite production in France and Poland will pick up at an impressive pace post lacklustre growth registered in 2020
Germany and Russia are expected to emerge as leading markets for bentonite in Europe
China is expected to spearhead growth of bentonite market in East Asia
