BALITANG NASYONAL: BAN Toxics Launches "Paputok ay Iwasan, Disgrasya at Polusyon ay Bawasan" Campaign on Human Rights Day

QUEZON CITY, MANILA -- In a very, vibrant display of community spirit and environmental advocacy, the environmental justice and toxic watchdog group 'BAN Toxics', launched on Tuesday morning (December 10th, 2024 -- Manila local time) at the covered court of 'Brgy. Payatas', in front of the 'Payatas B Elementary School' (PBES) with its new campaign "Paputok ay Iwasan, Disgrasya at Polusyon ay Bawasan". The event coincided with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)'s Human Rights Day, emphasizing the urgent need to protect children's rights to health and a safe environment.

The awareness activity drew a very impressive crowd of about 2,000 participants coming from students, teachers, parents, barangay residents, local officials and representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). Together, they are now rallied to promote the message by avoiding firecrackers to prevent future accidents and pollution, particularly as the New Year's Eve celebration approaches later this month. The early bird on Christmas for firecrackers will not be counted much.

As the festive season is fast approaching, this newly-held campaign highlights dangers from various types of firecrackers, which are still being sold despite being banned nationwide in selected cities. Among the listed items, the most in-demand firecrackers are Watusi, Piccolo and 5 Star, which are often used by children, teens and adults. The incessant sale of these harmful products poses a great danger to health, especially on the younger population, which is easily prone to injury and toxic substance exposure.

The chemistry of these, inside the so-called expertly crafted firecrackers is extremely terrifying regarding its health risk. Hazardous materials that are involved are lead, cadmium, chromium and nitrates. These compounds have the possibility of escalating a condition of health illness. Lead interferes with the central nervous system, and most importantly, can affect growth and developmental delays and the cadmium can even result in damaging our liver, kidneys and, may even be a probable human carcinogen. They emit toxic fumes with the inhalation of which respiratory problems and other health issues arise, which makes proper awareness and preventive measures paramount.

The "Iwas Paputok" campaign is a call toward raising awareness concerning the hazard fireworks pose and safer and greener celebrations. BAN Toxics' executive director named 'Mr. Reynaldo San Juan Jr.' also emphasized children's protection from environmental hazards, as told in an exclusive report to Radyo 630 and TeleRadyo Serbisyo Dumaguete: "Let us ensure a safe and responsible holiday celebration this season, one that prevents harm to our children", he said. Through this campaign, government agencies in the National Capital Region (NCR) are being driven to further intensify their monitoring as well as seize illegal firecrackers and prevent yet another increase of fireworks-related injuries.

The creative way by students of PBES showed their art through parols, the zero-plastic Christmas lantern made out of biodegradable materials. Such a thing promotes environmental sustainability, but at the same time encourages the involvement and creativity of the community for the youth. According to school principal Antonio Miranda, it is important that traditions be celebrated in a manner that would not harm the environment.

The beginning of the New Year makes BAN Toxics plead for safer firecracker alternatives that is, the homemade shakers, toy trumpets and other musical instruments. These will usher happy family celebrations sans health hazards and environmental disintegration.

Through such fireworks celebrations away from the mainstream noisemakers, communities around us usher in the New Year, thereby ensuring a future without harming our children. Into this final stretch of a much-celebrated campaign of the holiday, BAN Toxics carries its message of ushering Filipino people into a new but healthier celebration.

Esto es importante para saber si están capacitados para la terapia que dan o para saber si te sentirás a gusto con la forma en que dan la terapia, sobre todo para saber si se basan en la evidencia.

Cuando se ubica un posible problema, se deben de plantear en conjunto los objetivos para solucionar dicho problema, pero ¿sabías que muchos "psicólogos" no plantean objetivos? Y si no hay objetivos ¿cómo sabrás cuando ya se ha solucionado ese problema o cómo sabrás que sí se está haciendo algo para solucionarlo?

Es por eso que también se debe de medir y explicar los avances o progresos y si no hay, se debe de explicar la causa del mantenimiento del problema para trabajar en él y realizar nuevas estrategias para hacerle frente y no quedar estancados.

Así que recuerda que se tiene de derecho a saber la dinámica y los objetivos terapéuticos, así como los avances o progresos (si existe un mantenimiento del problema se debe también señalar las causas para poder avanzar).

Sobre esto, pregúntate, por ejemplo: desde dónde (qué tipo de terapia será), qué (qué es esa terapia), cómo (dinámica de la terapia), cuánto (cuánto tiempo durará o se conseguirán los objetivos) por qué (esa terapia, esa causa de problema, esa solución o por qué esos objetivos) o para qué (de que sirve esos objetivos o estrategias), entre otras dudas más.

BALITANG NASYONAL: BAN Toxics joins Brigada Eskwela to promote Toxic-Free Schools in Quezon City

QUEZON, MANILA -- In anticipation of the new school year, the environmental group and non-government organization 'BAN Toxics' made a proactive decision to join the annual Brigada Eskwela at 'Payatas B Elementary School' on Tuesday morning (July 23rd, 2024 -- Manila local time). This move has been an initiative for raising awareness about hazardous chemicals and waste and ensuring a safe learning environment for children as classes resume next week on Monday, July 29th.

Brigada Eskwela is the nationwide program organized by the Philippine Department of Education, DepEd, which seeks to mobilize the teachers, parents, and community members to prepare public schools in anticipation of the opening of classes for a new school or academic year. This cooperation does not only translate to cleaning and maintenance but also with reiterating that a safe and healthy learning environment is essential for students and educators, which includes here, as a local example at Piapi High School in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

During the kickoff event, participants at PBES cleaned the school facilities and painted some of the classrooms, some of which included paint and cleaning products undergoing chemical testing. With the help of Traders Industrial Supply Company Inc. (TRISCO), BAN Toxics used a handheld XRF analyzer to detect hazardous substances in both the school supplies and facilities. They allowed participation by the community hands-on so they could see with their own eyes possible dangers lurking around their environment.

The event also served as a channel through which the attendees received information concerning some lethal chemicals that expose children to danger. Among them were lead, normally used in illegally imported paints, and EDCs like triclosan and triclocarban, mostly found in liquid hand soaps and cleaning products. These chemicals work like hormones and, therefore, disturb hormone activity, which could lead to serious health problems such as reproductive issues or increased risk of cancer in all ages, from childhood to adult life. Another line of EDCs is that of the phthalates pointed out as constituents of air fresheners and cleaning products, outlining the line of precautions that one has to take while choosing products.

To further its mission, BAN Toxics organized a program called the Toxic-Free and Waste-Free Schools Program, whose objective is to educate elementary students and the community at large on the adverse impacts of toxic chemicals and encourage environmental sustainability alternatives. The program initiated in 2009, with the real objective of influencing responsible waste management practices among children, ensuring they are aware of the impacts of plastic pollution on human health and the environment.

As of this writing, they are now planning to increase its outreach efforts in the entire National Capital Region (NCR), specifically in Quezon City, by partnering with more schools and local government units (LGUs) in the future. The NGO is also appealing to the newly appointed DepEd Secretary named 'Mr. Sonny Manalang Angara' to fast-track health and safety initiatives that would increase awareness about hazardous chemicals and proper waste management practices in schools.

With the opening of the schools nearing, this partnership among BAN Toxics and DepEd's Brigada Eskwela is thus most opportune for reminding each other of everybody's shared responsibility for protecting children from hazardous chemicals and for ensuring a healthier and safer learning environment for the future generation.
