Out of the Garden: Into the Field

part 1

Part 1: 

Eric and I had gotten used to Agent Spruce, he’d been our Handler since we graduated and the months after felt easy. He called us to his office like he’d done many times before, we figured we had a mission. “Lily, Eric, glad you made it. Listen, I have to go out of the country, I can’t say much more on the matter as it is classified. Another Agent will act as your Handler while I’m gone, I believe you’re familiar with Agent Basil?” Spruce said. “Our old science teacher?” Eric asked, surprised as I was to see our Professor from college standing in the doorway. “Nice to see you two again as well.” Basil said. “I’ll leave you to it, lock up when you leave, will you Basil?” Spruce said, tossing him the keys to the place on the way out. Basil had barely caught them and had turned to say something but Spruce was already quickly walking away. 

“So, Basil, what’s our mission?” I asked. “It’s Agent Basil, you ought to know that by now.” He sighed. “Yeah, I was just trying it out, felt wrong, won’t happen again.” I replied. “I’m honestly not entirely sure the nature of your mission yet. Rose told me an Agent would drop off a file but I haven’t seen them yet.” Basil said. 

We waited and not too long, but long enough to be awkward, a woman entered the office with a folder. She walked over and handed it to Agent Basil. “Nice to see you again Basil, kind of a grim case so I hope everyone is up for it.” She said. “They will be, no need to worry Agent Pine.” Basil replied. Agent Pine looked at us again. “Good luck.” She said, giving us a thumbs up before leaving. 

We waited, Eric began tapping his fingers on the armrest of his chair. I took his hand in mine to keep him from annoying our teacher. I ran a thumb over the back of his hand and gave him a reassuring smile. He smiled back, I felt like I could see the love in his eyes. Punctuating that feeling he gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. 

Agent Basil closed the folder. “Pine was right about this being a bit grim. Agent Lavender is believed to be dead.” He said. “Did you know her?” Eric asked. “Not very well.” Agent Basil answered. We all were quiet a moment. 

“Is there evidence?” I asked. “Not much, just a large pool of blood in her living room. All the doors and windows were locked. No one should’ve known where she was.” Agent Basil answered. “Was she on a mission?” I asked. “I’m not at liberty to tell you the nature of it but yes she was on mission last anyone heard from her.” He answered. “We have a possible motive then.” I pointed out. “Yes, I believe we also have a potential suspect for you to stake out as well, be sure to check his apartment too.” He said, handing me a piece of paper. 

There was a black and white photo of a man in his thirties, said he worked in construction and had known ties to an enemy organization in the area. Eric read it with me, huddled close. The two of us got up at the same time, hands still clasped together. “Is there anything else you can tell us?” I asked. “Not at the moment. Dismissed.” Agent Basil answered, reminding me of school. Eric and I left the building and went to follow the lead we’d been given. 

“That was weird.” Eric said. I nodded, checking both sides before we crossed the street. We made it to the other side before the light changed. It wasn’t long until we were across the street from the apartment we were staking out. The two of us walked down the street and lingered in the middle. We turned towards each other, I fixed Eric’s lucky hat to hide his face better. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “You are so beautiful, you know that?” He said. I blushed a bit but didn’t reply, eyes glued to the target. 

We stood there a bit longer and then we walked around the block. We made various excuses to stop, such as him going to get us both some pizza, or me accidentally dropping my hair tie and looking for it. We sat on a bench, I put my head on Eric’s shoulder. He put an arm around me and rubbed the upper part of my arm to keep me warm. The coke winter air nearly put me to sleep a few times before I succumbed to my tiredness. 

In the morning Eric gently woke me up, shaking me slightly. “Hey, morning.” He said. “Were you up all night?” I asked. “No biggie.” He answered. “It is, you need to sleep too.” I replied. He yawned. “Fine, only a few hours though, then we go check in with Professor Basil.” He said before quickly falling asleep. I texted our teacher and let him know we hadn’t seen anyone come or go from the building.

So, in (maybe NSFW-ish) news baffling even for Brazilian politics standards, yup, that was a thing.

A video has leaked of a mother-in-law of the mayor of Campina Grande, Paraíba, in the country's Northeast, snorting cocaine from a half-naked woman's backside, as well as kissing her on the lips.

It's been reported that Soraya Britto (the mayor's mother-in-law) might even be in an actual relationship with the woman in the video. Well, power to them, I hope they have a wholesome and happy relationship (but they really, really should ditch the cocaine, hope they get help for that).

But the ironic and comedic factor in this?

The mayor, Bruno Cunha Lima, is conservative and close with – and shares views with – the far-right, LGBT+phobic, war-on-drugs president Jair Bolsonaro and his family. Bruno claims his mother-in-law hasn't been in touch with his wife for over 10 years. Nonetheless, Soraya defines herself, in her own words, as "extremely Bolsonarist, evangelical, and conservative".

That Tom Phillips guy from the tweet? He's the journalist covering Brazil for The Guardian.

Yea, Brazil is definitely not for beginners.
