Another small fire with steel wool and flint & steel. Extremely viable option, was much quicker to flame than charcloth.

How to use "the compass no one knows how to use," right.
youtube
Admittedly, these are not the easiest compasses to use. But they're widely available, inexpensive, and actually very good in open country.

I cannot stress enough how true this is. My parents adopted their first two cats who were the sole survivors of their litter.
The mom and kittens were attacked by a stray dog. My dad describes it as a literal blood bath, splatters everywhere. The two kittens who survived had managed to hide inside of my parents cars. One of them was twitchy and scared for the rest of her life, eventually starving herself to death.
The other lived to 16 years due to being an indoor only cat.
Sidenote, their father was exactly the kind of cat that outdoor cat advocates love to hold up as an example of "they'll be fine!" He was double polydactyl, massive, and used to hunt squirrels. He was a beast of a tom cat with claws that were sharpened over concrete. He loved my mom and would come running whenever he heard her car.
And one day he vanished. Because he only needed to be unlucky once.
Keep your cats indoors. Don't make them rely on luck.
outdoor cat defenders really are simply some of the most Delusional people on the planet, like you can list fact after fact all with verified sources about how bad it is to let cats outside for both them & the environment around them and people will cover their ears and be like "umm not my frumpkins he knows not to play in traffic & he has magical resistance to coyotes and disease"
