Unreleased & cancelled BL visual novels

Recently I purchased some second-hand BL visual novel magazines, and while reading them, I realized just how many of these announced games were never actually released. I thought it could maybe be interesting to compile a list of these games. I will mention which games were officially cancelled, but the status of most of these games is completely unknown. Perhaps they will still be released one day, but some of these publishers also don't seem to exist anymore. The magazines I used to find most of this information are Binetsu Ouji, B's Log and Cool-B!

Ouka Otsu - Shinshuu Kikou Senki (【櫻華堕つ) Publisher: Fareastblade This story of this game was supposed to take place during the Second World War. A famous researcher called Dr. Kisaragi Akira made it possible for the Japanese empire to develop cyborgs with super human strength. However, the United States also developed cyborgs and their creator intends to destroy Kisagari's research. Kisaragi escapes and seeks the help of the few surviving cyborgs, who all have their own reasons for helping him even though they don't like him. Part of this game was released as an e-book and translations can be found here. I am surprised the developers stopped publishing information about this project because I frequently saw it in Cool-B. Back then they published a lot of information, CGs and even short stories. Their last blog update was posted in 2016 in which they explained how things have been difficult and they decided to temporarily suspend the project. However, they never returned to confirm when production would be resumed. Secretly, I still hope that this game will be released one day, there's so much content already and it all seems really promising, but the official website doesn't work anymore and the Twitter account was also deleted. Some of the staff who worked on the game did mention how they still wanted to complete the project one day, but it has also been some years since these tweets were posted,

Angel's Feather Onsen mono Publisher: Blue impact This was supposed to be the third, and final Angel's Feather game. Some Japanese websites mention that the game's staff left the company, which was probably the reason why this game was never released. The magazines mention how the name of this game was just a placeholder name at the time (literally Angel's Feather hot spring story) but I could not find if they ever announced the real title. Some CGs were published in magazines and it looks like it was supposed to be light-hearted fandisc, focusing on the characters spending time with each other and having fun at the hot springs.

White Shadow Publisher: Blue Impact According to the official website, which can still be accessed through Wayback Machine, the first information about this project was published in Binetsu Ouji in 2004. Similar to the third Angel's Feather game, there's not much hope that it will ever be released because the staff that originally worked on it quit. This means that sadly, Angel's Feather was Blue Impact's first and last BL visual novel series. It was supposed to be a post-apocalyptic story which takes place after a long-lasting war that destroyed most of the planet. Some humans survived, who clung to a small piece of land that had survived the disaster. The people who live could be classified into three types, normal humans without supernational powers, humans who have characteristics of other creatures (for example animal characteristics), and people with strong supernational powers. This game was also featured on the cover of Cool-B volume 2. The regular updates that were posted on the official website make it look like the game was almost finished before the employees quit, so it's really a shame it was never released.

Torus Zero/ 0 -Torus (トーラス・ZERO) Publisher: CORE This is another one of these games that is mentioned pretty often in older magazines and was also featured on the cover of Cool-B (volume 4). The publisher CORE, became quite well-known in the industry after releasing Messiah, but Torus Zero was the project they originally wanted to release first. Before Messiah was released, they also released another visual novel called Fanatica, which upon reaching the final ending, mentioned how the story would be continued in Torus Zero. Unfortunately some of CORE's staff officially announced that they couldn't continue their projects after a big earthquake struck Japan in 2011. Now there's actually a bit of hope for this project because a few weeks ago, the artist Carnelian, announced a completely new project called Tokyo Gentou/Tokyo Phantasmagoria. In the magazine article it was mentioned that similar to CORE, a new BL game branch called Procyon would be releasing this new game. In an interview published in Cool-B volume 111 they mentioned that they came up with some of these ideas a long time ago, so I do wonder if they will use some elements of Torus Zero in this new game. Originally, Torus Zero focused on protagonist Riku who somehow ended up in a world in which he was the only human.

Unnamed project Publisher: CORE This game was only slightly teased in magazines and according to old BL game info website BOY-S STREET, the images were only on the website for a short time before it seemed like the entire project was scrapped and replaced with Torus Zero. It was supposed to be a school setting, but the main character is actually a demon and has two personalities.

Tenrin no Guneval (天輪のグネーヴァル) Publisher: Madalabo/Claw Mark A sci-fi story in which shadow creatures attack earth. Humans with special abilities saved mankind from this crisis. These characters all have their own special ability, some use fire or wind to fight while others can distort space. Technology also advanced, and flying motorbikes called 'Guneval' are used. This game was announced in 2012 and surprisingly the website can still be accessed, however it has been removed from all upcoming game lists in magazines and the last update on the website was only 4 months after the game was originally announced. Other than the usual visual novel gameplay, it was also supposed to have battle scenes in which you could control the main character to fight enemies. I'm kind of sad they never released this game because it seemed pretty interesting! Madalabo is mostly known for their other game Hadaka Shitsuji which seemed to be...the complete opposite of the story described on this game's website. I also really like superhero themes and the art is nice, so it's really a shame it never got released.

Shokushu Densetsu (触手伝説) Publisher: Madalabo Another Madalabo project that never got released. The title means 'legend of the tentacles' so I think you can already guess what this game is about. In 2011 they released a short booklet with some of the game's concept art, the characters, and other ideas for different future games. You can actually still buy a digital version of the booklet on DLsite here! You might even recognize some of these early concepts, as some of them were eventually used to create Kanja S (Patient S).

Nihon ni Natta Yoru (2本になった夜) Publisher: HardG.Lab This is… a strange one, the protagonist Taki Naruse is an ordinary university student who's busy with his homework and assignments. One day when he's forced to do a large number of tasks he decides to go to his lecturer to complain, but Taki gets ignored and his lecturer suddenly decides this is a perfect opportunity to check the new drug he has been developing. Long story short, Taki suddenly grows another dick (yep...). His lecturer suggests Taki uses his body to sleep with other men to ''cure'' his condition. I think this game was announced somewhere in 2011 and they published some information about it in Cool-B, but the official social media accounts were all deleted eventually.

New World Order Publisher: Love Delivery (HolicWorks) "When you die, say hello to God for me". This game was announced in 2015 and takes place in the United Kingdom. It focuses on a young British man called Lyr who works as a pastor at a church. He’s good at material arts and also knows how to use a gun. Together with three of his fellow pastors, he’s on a mission to kill. These are not just normal pastors, they’re professional assassins. I made a separate blog post about this some time ago, so if you want to read more you can find it here! The project was unfortunately officially cancelled in November 2022.

Heimskringla Publisher: Tyrant (HolicWorks) A dystopian future in which people developed the ability to see when a dead person’s soul leaves their body. The world once fell apart, but was then revided once more. In this new distorted world, humans started adapting to the environment and refugees from all over the world drifted to this country. As a result of this, it became a melting pot of many different races and towns continue to develop their own individual cultures. Five people, with five completely different backgrounds and birthplaces, travel together towards a certain place. There is only one thing all of them are looking for. Death. This game was officially cancelled in 2018, but it's quite hard to find any traces of it because Tyrant's official Twitter account was also deleted. Gekka Souei (月下双影) Publisher: NOEL Two childhood friends who became enemies due to unfortunate circumstances. This game was supposed to focus on protagonist Hayate and two groups of shinobi, taking place in a modern day setting. It was quite hard to find information about this game because even with Wayback Machine you can't find much on the website. I happened to find a pretty good image of it on Twitter, posted by a user who happened to save some of the wallpapers back then. A little bit of information about this game was published in B'sLOG and in Cool-B, but only in 2006. Looking at the little bit of information I was able to find on the website, it seems like they had quite a lot of plans and wanted to add roleplay elements to this game too, as well as a SFW and 18+ version of the game. The magazines introduced quite a lot of characters and the interview with the developers (in Cool-B volume 10) mentions that they had planned to create five routes. They didn't really specify which characters, but I assume it's the ones that can be seen in the main visual?

Psychedelic (サイケデリック) Publisher: LOVE&DESTROY Another game that is not officially cancelled, but the publisher is working on multiple new projects and the official website has not been updated since 2014. The game takes place in Shibuya, Japan and focuses on five good friends who always hang out together. Will these normal days last forever? They promoted this game as being ''all reverse'' so you could choose which character tops/bottoms which is pretty rare nowadays. In 2018 LOVE&DESTROY mentioned that the project was currently 'on-hold' and it's still unknown if they ever decide to create the game.

Tsukiiro Tanshikyoku (月色譚詩曲) Publisher: Adelta & MonstreCarameliser I think most BLVN fans immediately recognize Kurosawa Rinko's artstyle, who's well known for creating Hashihime and Uuultra C. This game is also not officially cancelled, but there hasn't been any news for years. It was announced in 2018 as a second collab between Adelta and MonstreCarameliser (a year before that they released the short game Umiiro Kyoushikyoku). The website still works, but it was only updated a few times in 2018 and once in 2020. The game focuses on Kaguya, a heir of a certain kingdom (probably some kind of god realm if I look at the names of the characters) who was only interested in women and spending his parents' money. His parents eventually give up on him and send him down to planet earth, in the form of a baby. A young shunga painter (shunga = erotic art) called Takemasu finds him and takes care of him. However, Kaguya grows much faster than the inhabitants of the planet and regains his adult body within a few days.

Hashihime Fandisc Publisher: Adelta Every time I mention this people ask me if they really announced it, but yes, two fandiscs even! A 'good end' and 'bad end' one. It was announced in 2018, but only mentioned once in a blog post and in Cool-B magazine. It is not officially cancelled but they haven't posted anything about it ever since. It's actually still in Cool-B's upcoming game list, however usually when a game gets cancelled it just one day disappears from the list, without any explanation, so I don't want to be too hopeful. I think it's very possible that it was announced because a lot of other games also have fandiscs so it seemed like a good idea at the time, but Adelta started working on Uuultra C after this and is currently working on their new game Ooe, as well as their original drama CD series.

No Thank You!! OVA Publisher: parade Not a game announcement, but I still decided to include it. One of the tweets announcing it can still be found here, and no it was not posted on April Fools'… I think it was mentioned again a few months after the original announcement, but it has already been 10 years and they haven't mentioned it ever since.

for a long time i considered renko and merry my favourite characters in touhou as a unit (and they are still definitely second place) but over time another character has grown on me enough that she overtook them in my mind, and that was toyosatomimi no miko!

her backstory is a bit confusing for those unfamiliar with a very specific period of japanese history, so this is going to be a lot to explain, but ill try my best to recap it:

umayado no ouji, or better known today as shoutoku taishi, was a political figure in japan during the asuka period. he was regarded as one of the primary founders of buddhism within japan, which granted him sainthood status after his death. in recent years, the legitimacy of some texts chronicling his accomplishments has been doubted by scholars, making him somewhat of a semi-legendary historical figure nowadays.

in touhou, his biography is reframed a bit: shoutoku taishi was a renowned regent from a very young age, capable of listening to the concerns of many individuals at once and easily posing solutions to issues of the countrys people. he was incredibly caring for his nation, and so feared for the deaths of his subjects—and by extension, himself, as he believed he was the only one capable of leading his people away from strife. because of this, he sought for a way to live forever.

he was then taught the ideals of taoism by seiga kaku, an immortal taoist hermit, or "xian", who moved to the country from china. he wished to follow in her footsteps to ascend to immortality, but the process would take time away from his position as regent. shoutoku taishi needed to be sure that japans public would not be led to unfair death by an improper ruler while he was focused on pursuing taoism, so seiga recommended he first spread buddhism to the public, since its creed discouraged violent acts and power imbalance.

as time went on, shoutoku taishi noticed his health was dwindling faster than expected. the ascetic training needed to become a xian was something that took a great part of ones life, and he feared he would pass on before reaching immortality. so, he devised a new plan: he would become a shijie, a xian who achieves an unjust form of immortality by swapping their body with an item of great value to them. the object takes residence in their coffin, replacing their corpse, and the consequence of death they have gained by living in the first place gets passed onto it. the practice is said to fool deities who would otherwise come searching for them to take to the afterlife, sacrificing the item in their place. in this case, shoutoku taishi chose his shichiseiken, or seven star sword, as the object to swap places with.

to go through this process, one has to cut ties with their identity and all people close to them in their life in order to prevent deities from tracking them down, so after the former regent performed this ritual, he slept under the earth to lay low. while he laid dormant, his legitimacy as a historical figure began to be doubted by many, so his resting place was teleported into gensoukyou, the setting of touhou, where myths and legends that have had popular belief in them fade away get brought in order to survive.

the saint finally resurfaced in 2011 during the events of touhou shinreibyou ~ ten desires., the 13th mainline title in the series, taking a new form and name to avoid detection and subsequent judgment from deities of death. she is now known as toyosatomimi no miko, shijie xian and crown prince of taoist thought, who aims to convert gensoukyou to taoist beliefs using her renowned charisma and leadership skills.

my absolute favourite aspect of miko is not her backstory, but rather her personality. she is obscenely self-centered, truly believing 100% that she is the only one fit to lead gensoukyou, but nevertheless acts completely composed and dignified to maintain her image. she knows gaining power by force wont lead anyone to worship her, so she attempts to gain political favour grassroots-style, just like she did in her prime. she once showed up to a contest where people compete for the most visually appealing danmaku, and upon appearance said something along the lines of, "i truly hate to steal the victory so easily, but i appreciate the opening act before my arrival." no one could call her out for being insulting, however—because, reluctantly, everyone agreed her danmaku unfortunately was in fact better than the competition. this sense of flair extends to her design as well; she's got a huge focus on royal purples and golds, and her danmaku patterns have motifs of blinding holy light, befitting her high-and-mighty attitude of herself and her ideals.

she has an ongoing rivalry with byakuren hijiri, the figurehead of gensoukyous buddhist group, who serves as her foil in many ways. despite publically endorsing buddhism, miko disagreed with its principles internally; now that her act is through, she sees it and its spokespeople as no more than an obstacle on her way to the top, and byakuren is no exception. because of the tension between the two, a lot of people ship them together. i dont, personally, but i dont dislike the ship either, its fun.

miko also has a major appearance in my favourite spinoff literature, touhou gumonkuju ~ symposium of post-mysticism., which transcribes an in-universe symposium between three different religious powers in gensoukyou: kanako yasaka representing shintoism, byakuren representing buddhism, and miko representing taoism. the three of them have a dialogue over how best to lead gensoukyou's people politically and spiritually. this book is wonderful to read if youre someone like me who enjoys touhou for its political satire, because it gives so much focus to the ideologies of these three characters and sets up a lot of dry satire and political text between these three characters with extremely varying mindsets. it gives these cast members a lot of time to shine, while setting up the finale of the ongoing arc within the games that introduced all three of them.

im a huge fan of mikos aesthetic in general. she has a really fun outlook and attitude, and whenever she is on screen she becomes the center of attention without fail. she demands attention, she is confident, self-assured, and an enormous prick, and i love her for it all. she is also, if only by technicality, canonically transgender, which is a big point in her favour for me. toyosatomimi no miko has grown on me for good reason; she epitomizes everything i love about touhous cast, plot, and worldbuilding. shes my ride-or-die favourite and likely will remain as such forever!

From one vampire to another, you both are quite literally made for each other in that regard. He sees you and he can feel warmth flooding through his ice cold veins, how the moonlight illuminates your figure makes you look just ethereal. He is stunned into silence but soon regains himself and Ritsu can't help but to approach you.

Now given his sleeping patterns, it is a little hard for the both of you to meet up for any kind of outings, these would mostly be happening later in the evening and into the night given his aversion to sunlight, but he manages to work his schedule just right between his unit work and when he sleeps. He will always make time for you.

Another cat lover! Perhaps the both of you would like to go to a cat cafe for one of your dates? It would be something that he would find both enjoyable and relaxing, especially if you get to be there with him.

His schedule is quite busy sometimes given the work he has with his unit, Knights, but if you would like, you could always join him when they have practices and lives. Honestly, the thought of you being in the crowd and cheering him on makes this young vampire smile.

Speaking of his unit, the others absolutely adore you and they protect their own, and given that they now see you as one of their own, they will protect you just as you protect Ritsu. It is what a Knight does, after all.

Ritsu is big on giving you those words of affirmation. He may not be too much of a talker, and he really isn't that down on himself, but he would never want you to be down on yourself. He wants you to know that he is committed to this relationship no matter what it takes.

Overall, two vampires are able to join each other under the light of the moon. It is something that he will always love. With your similar interests and hobbies, it just makes the time that you spend with one another so much better and so much sweeter.

Mumbling under her breath, she has to acquiesce that he beat her this time (as if he didn’t usually out talk her somehow on the usual. Tsk.

“As long as no cake-thieves are around, I’m not any more a threat than a kitten. Ouji-sama is the real hassle to deal with, and you’re the one who instigates him the most.” She’s casually not going to comment that she’s probably the 2nd most likely person who instigate the Prince. Not usually on purpose, but sometimes by accident because she doesn’t have much of a filter when she speaks her mind. (Whoops!)

“True, if they can’t survive my assault, then they weren’t worth it. Especially because she wasn’t the sort who was out for blood over some cake. Do you know how much paperwork she’d have to fill if she killed someone over cake? She’s not Belphegor who killed off the majority of his unit and therefore had to mostly work solo. What a contrast between him and Levi, who actually seemed to care for his unit.

Suddenly, she felt a strong urge to just… start… dragging… her feet. “Hm… really? Slooooow-senpai, am I…?” She started moving at a turtles pace, just trolling him. He should know that Haru always responded to taunts and mockery with her own taunting and teasing. With one snort, she goes back to moving at a regular pace. “Alright alright, let’s get you checked out. Can’t have our youngest dying of blood loss. I’ll never hear the end of the nagging.” She’ll have to kiss goodbye to her hearing.

"At this pace it should only take like... hm... 20 minutes? You think you can hold out?" She is going to try carrying you and embarrass the shit out of you if you say no.

The response is not surprising, even if they both know that the average intelligence officer won't know half of the things Haru does throughout the years of her service with the Varia. Not to mention that the few who are still alive and with the group have always been the minority. It's too enticing after all, to simply sell the information from the infamous Varia, even if the salary is decent, the condition sometimes can be quite exhausting.

Despite his unchanging demeanour, softness spreads through his chest at her remark. He has long since stopped trying to figure out since when he started seeing her as a sibling; much like one you never knew you wanted in your life, but surprised you with their existence all the same. Compared to the summers spent alone during his childhood, his time with them has been much more fun and exciting.

"Ah, I believe you meant it the other way around, Haru-senpai. Someone's gotta keep you and the degenerate prince in check. Who knows what's gonna happen if not? You might just kill someone over some cake." Which is not something that hasn't happened before--almost. If said cake thief had been a random member and not one of the two closest to her, done out of the sheer want of annoying Haru. "Though I suppose they deserver to die if they can't even survive your assault."

A few steps are taken before her next suggestion and Fran halts, staring at her dumbfounded. "Ehhh, no way. Leaning down to your level would be more bothersome." Perhaps a childish tantrum, the illusionist continues without another explanation. "Hurry up, Slow-Senpai, didn't you want to get me to the infirmary? At this pace I might die of blood loss first."

Oh wow, if anything, the feeling is mutual, haha. I've always wondered what it would be like to live in Japan. I've visited Japan once, and everyone there was very friendly and clean. I was shocked by the lack of trash on the ground... You can't say the same for the United States, unfortunately. Some people just leave their trash wherever they want. 💀💀💀 And I was also surprised by the amount of people walking by themselves around midnight!! It seemed very safe, but I'm getting off topic now. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Also, I don't mind answering your questions quickly. I find it interesting so the answers come to me very easily!

I found DL because to be honest with you, I was looking for an anime with attractive characters in it. I have already seen a lot of slice of life, drama, and school-focused ones, and while I love the stories and characters, I can't help but notice a lot of the protagonists seem bland in terms of appearance. I understand it's so that the viewers can relate to them, but even so, I was looking for something different.

It's one reason why I really adored the anime Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji ( オオカミ少女と黒王子 ), for the unusual male lead and his Do-S personality. I know a lot of people don't like that anime, but I thoroughly enjoyed both the original manga and the adaptation!!

So, ever since that one, I looked for more anime with Do-S characters, and I stumbled across DL that way. However, back then I only knew about the Sakamaki family, so I didn't even know More, Blood existed until I finished the first season.

When the Mukamis were introduced, I was so shocked... I couldn't believe my ears, it was really Sakurai Takahiro voicing Ruki!! Not to mention he is even x10000 more attractive than Kyouya! (I like dark-haired characters the most, lol). I was instantly hooked. Even though my original favorite was Ayato, I was quickly converting into a Ruki fan.

I ended up reading Ayato's Haunted Dark Bridal route, and then his More, Blood route, but I was somewhat disappointed with how it ended. If anything, it just made me more curious about Ruki because he appeared in Ayato's route as a love rival. Even the translator I read noted in the comments that "this version of Ruki doesn't actually exist." Which made me even more curious, because I wanted to know Ruki's true character under the façade.

He was definitely a lot more Do-S in his own story, which I really adored. Some people might consider him too strict or controlling, but I found it very attractive, hahaha. Maybe I am just a big Do-M.

I'm really happy I found Ruki in the end. Everything about him is just worthy of obsessing over for me, lol.

pets —Varan, if he counts as a pet, honestly. Sapphire met the serpentine companion whilst traveling with Blood to Black Pearl Isle. At that time, Varan was nothing more than a lone egg drifting among the waves. His true origins are unknown to his current caretaker. Although, Sapphire loves him all the same.

Sapphire is no stranger to getting down and dirty when it comes to folks who wish harm onto his loved ones. Let’s just say a good strike to the balls with his sword sheathe is at least the mildest red flag you will get if you piss him off good enough. 

ever killed anyone before — Demons. His uncle. That last kill was the only one he doesn’t exactly regret given the damage that was inflicted upon his people.

thoughts on marriage / kids — Loves children. Future verse, he becomes a magical instructor to some kiddos after the dismantlement of the monarchy. He’s thought of marriage. Although, I’d say its not a priority. Sapphire wants to find someone who will love him for him.

someone they love —He cares very deeply for all his friends, as they tend to tolerate him, He realizes he isn’t the easiest person to deal with. Romantically, he’s very much in love with @makubes’ Rock and @rosecoloredmuses’ Hime. He is also developing a very big crush on @electricea’s Ryuji as of the moment. Familial-wise? He will always be his mother’s baby. 

approach to friendships — Cautiously. Sapphire’s an overall friendly guy, albeit with reasons to tread on thin ice. He will give people the benefit of the doubt, but not without some sort of guard up. 

favourite drink — Herbal tea, preferably lemon or chamomile. He also really likes cooling down with a nice bottle of fruit-flavored sparkling water after a good training session.

favourite place to spend time at — Forest. It’s where this feral child feels truly content.

swim in the lake or the ocean — Both. As long as there are plenty of animals to interact with, nearby. 

their type — Sapphire would wholly appreciate someone who would display upmost honesty. He’s been around the bend with people who’ve sugarcoated  toxic tradition long enough. So, naturally, he will respect someone who would be more than willing to call out bullshit when they see it. He, of course, is no exception. No matter how in denial Sapphire is about his own mistakes, it would be refreshing to have someone, by his side, who will take his hand and bring him back up from stewing in his own dark hole.

camping or indoors — Either. Indoors has plenty of warm places to cuddle on with a soft blanket. Outdoors is where adventure lies, baby!
