Ember becomes the newest “go-to” spot for dining in Ottawa’s Byward Market
One of Ottawa’s newest restaurants is Ember, which opened on Clarence Street in the Byward Market last June.  The name goes well with its Argentinian-style charcoal grill and wood-fired pizza oven. Cody Nicholl and Kyle Wilson are partners in this endeavor; Nicholl is a noted mixologist here while Wilson is the head chef, having honed his skills as head of the food and beverage division at the…

OC Introduction: Madison Hunter — 17-18 during X2: X-Men United, and so forth.
Reluctant student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and girlfriend of John "Pyro" Allerdyce until he dips. Spoiled rich-ish girl from Ottawa Hills, Ohio. Girly girl. Captian of the cheerleadering team. Enjoys video games. Loves pop music. (Britney, *NSYNC, BSB, Christina, and the like.) Kind of a bitch. Her parents sent her to Xavier's when she was barely 15, hoping it'd help her control her abilities. She has the mutation of hydrokinesis; she can create and manipulate water. Her best friend is Jasmine Jacobs, whom she met at Xavier's.
Maddie (or "Mads") hates attending the institute; she wants to be a normal teenager. She misses her home, her family, her old friends. She doesn't care about social issues or training or fighting in battles. She wants nothing to do with "that crap." She also kind of hates being a mutant, for those same reasons. Why the fuck did her father have to be a carrier of some gene that made her born a dangerous freak in the eyes of millions? She's "too pretty for this!"
If you ask her, the only good thing about her school is meeting her friends and meeting John. (They met and started dating when they were 15.) And then he just left. She's felt like total shit since that day.
Spotify playlist.
Her father, Richard Hunter, is of Mexican and Scottish descent, while her mother, Donna, is Mexican-American.
She has two younger siblings: a brother, Greyson, who is 2 years her junior, and a sister, Allison, who is 5 years younger than her. They have a chocolate brown male Toy Poodle named Rococo.
If she had existed in the movies, she would've been in the cafeteria scene at the museum, present for the whole trip in X2, and she probably would've been at the battle in X3.

Tim/Brady bodyguard AU?
this is so barely adjacent to what you asked for BUT
pop star timmy stu
just think about it. young timmy, who has made a name for himself with some club bangers a la avicii (rip :( miss u) and is getting pretty popular! he's had his european tour! his songs are THE songs of frat parties across the land!
he's big enough that his label sends him on a north america tour, and maybe he is going to play a show at a music festival in st louis or something, and who does he run into the day before when he goes incognito to the first round of shows, is getting shoved around while just trying to get a beer at the beer tent but brady
brady is still captain of the ottawa senators, nhl player, etc etc, and he also -- i cannot stress this enough -- has no fucking clue who timmy is
(brady listens exclusively to mid aughts indie bangers and sappy country; he is not Hip to the Scene)
so brady just sees a very hot very german very pathetic guy and is like, well i GOTTA help this guy out and get his beer.
and then they start talking and timmy is SO cheerful and also activating the "needs taking care of" sensor in brady's brain, and meanwhile timmy clocks that brady doesn't know who he is and THATS fun because as nice as it is to be famous it's also nice to just harmlessly flirt with the very large man you've found, and one thing leads to another and they've spent the whole day together
(maybe brady protects timmy from some thrown elbows in a crowd at one of the shows. bodyguard!)
and maybe after the last show they have some inadvisable semi-public sex somewhere on the festival grounds
but they don't exchange numbers and they don't figure it's going anywhere
until the next night, when brady gets dragged by a friend to some more electronica ish shows than his usual and guess who is up on stage, looking as cheerful and handsome and game to be debauched as ever

zb1 as ontario universities + programs
yes this is an incredibly niche topic but this has now become my chosen coping mechanism for uni decisions
Tumblr media
sung hanbin - queens health science
such a pretty campus
a lot of historic buildings and freshly manicured lawns that i think would fit hanbin perfectly
and like imagine him with soft academia
it’s just a really nice school and its health sci program is one of the best in ontario
like it’s very neutral good
and he feels like he would make a really good doctor, like pov sung hanbin is your family doctor LMFAO
and like i think he’d do a great job, probably has the prettiest notes and always does his part during group projects
Tumblr media
zhang hao - queens commerce
ofc i had to keep haobin together
but dw neither is sacrificing their education for the other person (remember kids the only person who can get you your degree is you)
queens commerce is also one of the best business schools in ontario
ik that zhang hao is a music kid but that felt like cheating so this is an alternative!
out of all of zb1 he feels like the most business type person?
like he’s so smart and always plans ahead
so i feel like he could be successful in anything he tried but especially business because it’s so lucrative and opens the door to so many paths
like hanbin i think he suits the clean and historic school vibes
they both have a very curated?? for lack of better word image and i think they’d look like they were in a photoshoot every time they step out on campus
Tumblr media
park gunwook - uoft criminology, law and society
university of toronto!!
i’m just saying, debate is literally the gateway to law
and i’d be willing to bet that he has done or considered mock trial so i think this would fit super well
he knows a lot about history and philosophy, so i can see him being interested in studying a humanity
in canada, you need to get a bachelors before going to law school, so a lot of people do something related
this is basically as good as you can get
i also think gunwook would do well in uoft
it can be a kind of isolating experience because the school is so big and a lot of people commute so there isn’t much of a social scene
but as the resident social butterfly, i feel like gunwook would be able to establish a good circle
and also i think he would like the energy of the city
there’s always something to do and both city hall and parliament are literally right next to the campus
alternatively, i considered university of ottawa, which is good for its social science since you know, it’s literally in the capital city of canada so its law program is really good
but honestly there’s not much undergrad wise
i could see him going for graduate school though
i don’t know lawyer gunwook just feels right
he’s good at making decisions, works well under pressure, has the fundamentals down, and is a hard worker so i can definitely see him making it into law school
Tumblr media
kim taerae - waterloo computer science
listen
listen
i know that taerae isn’t that genre of nerd
but the glasses
him being losercore
like you can’t tell me he wouldn’t go to the most loser of all loser schools in ontario
(btw waterloo is not bad, it’s actually really good for engineering and comp sci but also everybody there has no life hence the loser allegations)
(also because if you do eng or comp sci you are inherently a loser i’m so sorry pls continue to run tumblr though)
but yeah i can definitely see him doing comp sci maybe like ui ux stuff
actually the more i think about it the more it makes sense for me
he’s also the only thinking (mbti) in zb1 and his fashion sense would fit in perfectly with the rest of the department
Tumblr media
seok matthew - mcmaster nursing
like hanbin, i really do see him doing something healthcare related
mcmaster is second for nursing, after uoft, but i don’t think matthew would like toronto as much
from what i’ve heard, vancouver is a lot greener, more laid back, and hiking culture is big there
toronto kind of offers none of that, with the addition of pretty bad air quality comparatively (still pretty good though because canada’s pretty sparsely populated)
mcmaster though is in a smaller town that’s essentially just a university town and also has a trail literally right on campus
it’s a smaller, more tight knit community and nursing is a pretty small program so it’d be even closer
i think he would have a really good time with mcmaster’s social scene
it’s also right by lake ontario and has pretty decent weather
Tumblr media
ricky shen - uoft rotman
another business student, are we surprised?
i also considered art but our only really good art school is ocad and as far as i know it doesn’t focus on traditional art as much
so anyways mr young and rich tall and handsome is going to go the business route
uoft is really international student friendly, mostly because they accept a lot of international students and because toronto is also pretty diverse
like you can truly get any type of cuisine here and we have a really big asian population too
so as a person who also immigrated here, i’d say it’s not a terrible transition
definitely the most diverse of any of the ontario schools
once again, the social life at uoft is not great but usually the business schools are better
han yujin - still in high school
Tumblr media
han yujin - university of guelph kinesiology
since yujin’s currently studying dance at his school, i thought that kinesiology would be a good fit
for those who don’t know, it’s essentially like sports science?? or studying the way people move and so forth
he also plays soccer and just gives off like sporty vibes?
like the quiet kid who is surprisingly the fastest on the team
once again, uoft is technically the best for this, but it’s kind of a scary place to go into alone so i can see yujin choosing a quieter school
i’d say guelph is even more closely knit than mcmaster by virtue of it being a smaller city and a smaller school
they have a solid health science program though and good student support too, which i think he’d benefit from
Tumblr media
kim jiwoong - uoft english literature
so
i know that he is an actor
and i considered having him go the performing arts route
however, i know nothing about those schools and once again i think it’d be too easy
so to make my life harder, instead of having jiwoong perform shakespeare plays, i’m making him read and analyze them instead
he gives off like that one english teacher you had who changed your life and helped you rekindle your love of reading after your gifted burnout yknow
but yeah i see him going into english lit to go be a teacher
and uoft would be perfect for that because it not only has i believe one of the largest libraries in north america, but also a really big teachers college once he’s done getting his bachelors
he also seems like he would be able to fit in in any environment, so i don’t see uoft’s size or atmosphere being a problem for him
Tumblr media
kim gyuvin - toronto metropolitan university performance: acting
i saved the best for last
ik i literally just said that i wasn’t going to do performing arts for jiwoong but this is different
something about his performance during the musical segment of boys planet changed the way i viewed him forever
like??????? how is he that good for like the most random challenge ever
i think he’d be really good at acting seriously so anyways!
also tmu (formerly known as ryerson) is just a very fun vibe
it’s in the more downtown area of toronto compared to uoft and right by the entertainment district
the nightlife is so good and gyuvin would probably be the life of the party
tmu’s also like uoft’s funkier younger cousin so i think that fits his vibe well

Listening to Universal Order of Armageddon and Ottawa on a Friday night and it strikes me that this scene has never really been revived or recycled in 30 years, only a handful of vinyl reissues. Is it too earnest to appeal in these irony poisoned times or will serious young people in gas station shirts and high water Dickies chest-tapping to the music be a thing again?

322: Rival Boys // Animal Instincts
Tumblr media
Animal Instincts Rival Boys 2014, Tiny Records (Bandcamp)
Rival Boys were an Ontario indie rock band active in Toronto from the late ‘00s to the mid ‘10s. They were a three-piece comprising sibling vocalists Lee and Graeme Rose (on bass/violin and guitar, respectively) and drummer Sam Sholdice, with a sound somewhat like Vancouverites Mother Mother on a blue day. (Whom, as an aside, I have discovered are now way more popular thanks to TikTok than they ever were at the time—they have 8.3 million listeners a month on Spotify, which is like… 38 times more than the New Pornographers.) Both Roses affect a mewl somewhere between Violent Femmes’ Gordon Gano and Sarah McLachlan, with Lee’s more powerful bellow usually taking the lead. In conjunction with the cold mountain violin that periodically sweeps the floorboards, it gives their otherwise youthful affect a nostalgic somberness. They were emphatically a rock band though, capable of kicking up a surly crunch: they didn’t have the dance rhythms of the Metric/Land of Talk acolytes who were all over CBC Radio 2 (the national public alternative music station) at the time, preferring to lope along like the Pixies.
Rival Boys were no longer a going concern by the time I moved to Toronto in 2017; I discovered them when I found a CD of their 2009 EP Life of Worry in the basement of an Ottawa house I shared with a friend who’d known somebody in the band back in high school. It was the first time I can remember coming across a group remotely in my social radius that struck me as unequivocally good. I listened to that five-song EP to death for a few years, and I still think they really nailed their sound with it; as a result, I had kind of a chilly response to their 2014 farewell Animal Instincts when I found it at a punk flea market. They’d shed just a touch of the raw-boned vulnerability that had made their loose, imagistic lyrics cling like a thin flannel against a harsh wind; a bit less bite to the guitar; a hair less heedless urgency to the vocals. The serviceable cover of Wolf Parade’s “I’ll Believe in Anything” seemed on the nose; the new rendition of EP highlight “Construction Work” didn’t make my heart stagger around like the original.
But listening to it now, I think Animal Instincts’ real sin was just not being the record I’d fallen in love with. Life of Worry is special, but there’s plenty to like on the LP. Opener “Fortune” edges the hell out of the listener before finally giving us some of Lee in full thunder; “Young and Old” is a showcase for the close harmonies, wet-eyed violin, and martial drumming that were Rival Boys’ most distinctive element; “Don’t Bloom” gives us a little of everything Lee does well, flowing from a distracted, introverted croon to a high wail that arcs like a flaming arrow at a Viking funeral. On this listen anyway, even the new version of “Construction Work” is doing it for me. There’s a nice closure to the fact that it was both among the first and last things they cut: the original with its blazing, desolate frustration sweeping into a folk reel outro that feels like transcendence; the revision more brittle, reserved, like people on the cusp of leaving adolescence behind giving it one last go, the quieter outro never quite taking off but settling into a low, churchy organ drone. It feels like a dignified goodbye.
Which the record in fact was, although it may not have been clear at the time. Graeme dropped out of the music scene altogether; Lee was quiet for a few years, but soldiers on with the very good Ace of Wands; I’m not sure what Sam’s up to these days. Time moves on—it’s 15 years since the EP, 10 now since the LP. I’m sure for the band members and their fans it feels like barely half that time, like finding a book you set down just the other day covered in dust and all your friends so old all the sudden! If ‘00s indie music can be said to have been about anything, it was surely about digging deeper into the experience of being alive, celebrating the wild joy of it while you can, making something of that. Rival Boys surely made something, and it’s nice to have something physical of it to keep.

🤩 FACE WITH STARRY EYES — is your oc a planner, or are they more spontaneous in their actions?
Sev likes to think they have the capacity to be a schemer, but when it comes down to it they're always going to act on instinct first and obsess about what they should have done later.
🍎 RED APPLE — where was your oc born? do they still live in/around their place of birth or do they live somewhere else? how do they feel about their birthplace?
They were born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. As soon as they could, though, they hightailed it for Montreal bc even in the world of darkness Ottawa's music scene is dogshit. That's where he was embraced, and he stuck around there with his pack until the rest of them met final death. After that, they moved up to Quebec City to start integrating with the Camarilla, and now they're being forced to move down to Kingston to fulfill a boon.

Big fan of pretty much all your bands, super excited about the new Sumac and to see Botch in Tokyo in September (thanks for coming all the way out here).
I also really enjoy your writing, going through your posts I found this:
"The hardcore music I loved in the ‘90s had morphed into the gross commercialization of “screamo"."
While I completely understand which bands you are referring to and getting granural about music genre names gets old quickly I was wondering if you are a fan of what a lot of kids back in those days would consider actual screamo, bands like Pageninetynine, Orchid, Majority Rule, City of Caterpillar, Circle Takes the Square etc.. as someone who at the time was heavily into that scene and into the Hydra Head catalogue I cant help feeling that while the sounds were radically different both offered diy, incredibly abrasive yet deeply artistic and thoughtful music.
Majority Rule`s Interviews with David Frost came out a few months before Jane Doe and to me is as much of a defining record of that era. Curious if you like those records as well.
The stuff I liked in that realm preceded the term “screamo.” I liked stuff like Antioch Arrow, Mohinder, Swing Kids, Angel Hair, Heroin, Nation of Ulysses, Honeywell, Frail, Reversal of Man, Ottawa, One Eyed God Prophecy, Union of Uranus, Behead the Prophet NLSL, and a bunch of other stuff that, at the time, was generally just referred to as hardcore or emo-violence or some weird obsolete term like “sweater punk.” Screamo felt like a term that started getting thrown around after I’d already kinda checked out of that scene.
So bands like Pageninetynine and City of Caterpillar weren’t on my radar. They began putting out records around ‘99 or ‘00, which was a point where zine culture was waning and the internet was becoming the main source of information about new bands. I didn’t own a computer. My peer group was gravitating towards indie rock. And I was starting to latch onto other stuff outside the hardcore world.
I remember buying a few Orchid records and I just couldn’t really get into ‘em for whatever reason. There was also some weird backlash from that world against a lot of the bands in my peer group, like Jerome’s Dream having some strange one-sided internet beef with Hydra Head. I recall seeing Majority Rule in the small room at Emo’s in Austin where there were a few snide remarks from stage about the “rock” show happening outside—which happened to be Blood Brothers and These Arms Are Snakes. That said, I thought Majority Rule played a great set, but the banter deterred me from digging any deeper.
To be honest, I thought all that late ‘90s / early ‘00s stuff was perfectly fine… I just wasn’t as drawn to it as the stuff that came out earlier in the ‘90s, and I was a broke college student so I spent what little money I had on other records instead. The screamo stuff that I really disliked was the slick Warped Tour stuff that didn’t seem to have any connection to the aforementioned bands and didn’t seem to have any sense of familiarity with the scene from the previous decade.
Thanks for the question! It was fun trying to remember what I was listening to at the turn of the century.

Fitness Classes in Ottawa: Elevate Your Health and Wellness
In today’s fast-paced world, staying healthy and maintaining a balanced lifestyle can sometimes feel like a challenge. Between work, family obligations, and other responsibilities, making time for physical activity is often pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. However, finding the right fitness class in Ottawa can be a game-changer, offering a fun, motivating, and structured way to prioritize your health. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a beginner looking to get active, Ottawa has a wide range of fitness classes to suit all interests and fitness levels.
The beauty of Fitness Classes in Ottawa lies in their diversity. From high-energy workouts designed to get your heart pumping to more mindful sessions that focus on flexibility and mental clarity, there is something for everyone in Ottawa's fitness scene. Many gyms and studios across the city offer an array of options, making it easier than ever to find a class that fits your schedule, goals, and preferences.
For those who thrive in a high-intensity environment, boot camps and HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) classes are some of the most popular choices. These classes are designed to challenge both your strength and endurance with fast-paced intervals of exercises such as jumping jacks, sprints, and bodyweight movements. The fast pace keeps your heart rate up, boosting cardiovascular health, while the combination of strength training and conditioning helps to improve muscle tone and overall fitness. The group setting adds a social aspect, creating a sense of community and camaraderie, which can be especially motivating.
If you're looking for something a bit gentler on the body but still effective, Ottawa also offers a variety of low-impact fitness classes. Yoga and Pilates are perfect examples of classes that focus on building core strength, improving flexibility, and fostering mindfulness. These classes emphasize controlled movements, deep breathing, and stretching, all of which promote relaxation and mental clarity. Many studios offer different types of yoga, from the traditional Hatha and Vinyasa to more restorative options such as Yin or Restorative Yoga. These classes are ideal for reducing stress, increasing mobility, and enhancing overall well-being.
For those seeking a more dynamic form of fitness, dance classes can be a fun and engaging way to stay active. Ottawa boasts a wide variety of dance classes, including Zumba, hip-hop, Latin dance, and even ballet. These classes provide an excellent cardiovascular workout while also improving coordination, balance, and flexibility. The upbeat music and rhythm make it easy to lose yourself in the movement, turning fitness into a joyful experience rather than a chore. Dance classes also foster a strong sense of community, as participants often bond over their shared love of music and movement.
Strength training classes are another popular option for those looking to build muscle and increase physical strength. These classes often focus on lifting weights, using resistance bands, or performing bodyweight exercises that target specific muscle groups. With the guidance of experienced trainers, participants learn proper form and technique to maximize the benefits of strength training while minimizing the risk of injury. Whether you’re looking to increase muscle mass, improve bone density, or simply tone and sculpt your body, strength training classes in Ottawa can help you achieve your goals.
For those who enjoy a bit of variety in their workouts, circuit training classes offer a mix of different exercises in one session. Typically, these classes include a combination of cardio, strength training, and agility drills. Participants move through different “stations” or exercise areas, each focusing on a different aspect of fitness. This variety helps keep things interesting and ensures a full-body workout that challenges all major muscle groups while also boosting cardiovascular endurance.
Beyond the physical benefits, fitness classes also have a powerful impact on mental health. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting mood and improving overall mental clarity. The social aspect of group fitness classes can also help combat feelings of isolation, providing a supportive environment where individuals can connect with others who share similar health and wellness goals. Having the guidance of a knowledgeable instructor and the encouragement of fellow participants creates a motivating atmosphere that fosters personal growth and achievement.
