Thanksgiving Centerpieces, with RWBY & JNPR!

RWBY:

Ruby and Yang are countryside girls, so unsurprisingly the pair decide to shock their partners with the unholy Turducken. The chicken, stuffed in a duck, stuffed in a turkey is, by and large, genuinely delicious. It's just... a lot.

Both Ruby and Yang easily go for a second and a third and even fourth serving. Weiss and Blake tap-out with barely finishing their first plate.

Despite the culinary mess that preceded the meal, both Weiss and Blake appreciated Ruby and Yang's work and effort. By the end of the day, it was clear that the team had become closer than the days before.

If you think the Turducken is unholy, Nora bowls everyone over with her own abomination involving stuffing birds in larger birds.

Take a Cassowary, stuff it in an Emu, and stuff that in an Ostrich.

Jaune and Pyrrha will never know where Nora got the birds from. She just arrived with them one day. Some of the plucked feathers adorn her tattered uniform and tell a silent story. The duo thought it best to not ask. Ren was silent on the matter, but was seen preparing an outdoor oven to fit the large bird trifecta.

Jaune and Pyrrha were not in the slightest prepared to witness Nora eating a whole 50% of the crime against nature. The duo knew Nora had an appetite, but this was... something else. Ren remains silent on the matter, only motioning for a second helping.

Jaune and Pyrrha did not expect the thing to taste as well as as it did. Jaune, coming from a large family where battling at the table for scraps and extra servings was common, surprised himself as he plated up again. Pyrrha, normally on a more stricter diet due to her athletics career and sponsorship demands was actually glad to just eat to her heart's content, plating up alongside Jaune for another full plate. Ren remains silent on the matter, but his small smile as he shifted a food-comatose Nora away told everyone his thoughts.

Panera Debuts A ‘Bread Hat’ For The Kentucky Derby, And It Comes With A $100 Gift Card! It Looks Good Enough To Eat.

The Kentucky Derby, while technically a horse race, is perhaps better known for its iconic drink, the Mint Julep — and even more so for its fancy hats. Derby guests and at-home watchers alike don over-the-top pieces to celebrate the event.

Many of the hats you’ll see around the race track were months in the making and cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. This year, Panera has a particularly fascinating hat in store for the most exciting two minutes in sports that’s potentially going to blow all those high-priced chapeaus out of the water—a fascinator-style hat made from a bread bowl.

Well, it’s not made from an actual bread bowl, but it looks like it was, and unless someone tries to take a bite out of it (they might, it looks delicious) they’re likely to be none the wiser.

The aptly named “Bread Hat” was created by A-Morir Studio, which has created non-bread-themed fashion for the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga, although we're guessing J-Lo’s outfits weren’t quite as mouth-watering as this masterpiece.

The hat’s centerpiece is a 3D-printed replica of a bread bowl surrounded by colorful ostrich feathers — because how else would one surround a bread bowl designed to be worn as a hat? The green-forward bouquet of feathers lends a nod to the brand’s broccoli and cheddar soup, so much so that you’d be forgiven for expecting some to be hiding inside the bowl.

If you’re hoping to get your hands or head rather, on one of the hats, the company is selling them online starting April 29th for the reasonable sum of $21 via ThePaneraShop.com. Panera says that price tag is a playful nod to its “21 new and enhanced dishes” on its newly-revamped menu.

If wearing a bread bowl hat makes you crave eating one, all online purchases of the hat will also come with a $100 Panera gift card, which you can use to get a couple of the edible versions of the bowls filled with creamy tomato or French onion.

And in case you want to expand that order beyond the bread bowl, some of those “new and enhanced” options on Panera’s menu include a new Chicken Bacon Rancher sandwich, Ranch Cobb Salad, and a new Southwest Chicken Ranch salad we hear pairs beautifully with a bread bowl filled with Mexican Street Corn Chowder.

If you do get one of the hats, Panera says you can expect it to arrive just in time to make all your friends jealous (and hungry) on Derby Day, which is set to take place on May 4th in Kentucky.

Thanksgiving Table Setting  a Flight of Fancy

For this family Thanksgiving I wanted something different from the usual pumpkin and chrysanthemum table setting theme so I decided on an avian inspired theme. I set the table with Herend ,Guirlande de Raisin plates and Sadek, Exotic Bird rimmed soup bowls. The flatware is Audubon by Tiffany & Co. The crystal stemware is Waterford, Tall Colleen and Queen by Miller Rogaska. In lieu of flowers I arranged Lady Amherst pheasant and peacock feathers in two bud vases. The centerpiece holds an arrangement of turkey eggs.  Two ostrich eggs perched upon sterling silver candlesticks complete the avian theme.

Swan Princess Party

A magical black and white swan princess party with pink, of course!

The idea of a swan party was inspired by the swan pool float we have had for a few years. It just so happened my daughter was into Barbie’s Swan Princess movie when I started planning her 4th birthday.

So, the swan idea came to life around swans and princesses  - feathers, ballet shoes (as an ode to Swan Lake), swans, and black and white accented with pink. Cake by Wink by Erika with added “4″ candle, photos by Johnny Than.

Black linens on the table with our white charivari chairs pulled in the colors perfectly! And, the cute swan plates looked great on the black linens. To turn the swan plates into swan princess plates, I found gold crowns and added them to the plates. Ta-da! Swan princess plates. We added the gold crowns to the swan masks, as well.

Behind the kids’s table, we hung silk wisteria on fishing line to have a hanging floral accent. It took way more pieces than I imagined (and I still wish I’d done more of them), but it was a fun photo spot.

The  centerpieces were one of my all time favorites! I found the set of three swans in different sizes and ordered 2. My mom arranged the fresh flowers for the party and put them in the swan planters.

The food even reflected the black, white, and pink theme! Black licorice, chocolates, and chocolate goldfish were spread with yogurt covered pretzels, vanilla sugar wafers, iced animal cookies, vanilla ding dongs, white M&Ms, mini white chocolate Oreos, white chocolate covered mini Rice Krispie treats, white swirl suckers, white chocolate truffles, and pink M&Ms on my favorite melamine platter.

Another tray had the almost black colored grapes and an assortment of white cheeses, marcona almonds, macadamia nuts, and Pirate’s Booty.

We also used black rock candy in a container with more of the white chocolate pearls.  And, I found a great jewelry stand to display powdered donuts and chocolate donuts. Now the jewelry stand holds my daughter’s headbands.

White feather boas were great for draping around platters and decorations. And, we used the same flowers from our daughter’s Garden Party first birthday to add pink accents to the feathers (seriously the best faux peonies I’ve ever found).

For decorated cookies, I chose a “4″ for the 4 year old along with a feather and swans. These were done by Sweets by Shey and were tasty and on theme. She even added a little sparkle to the 4s.

The tiered serving piece has become my go-to piece for the decorated cookies at the parties, so I’m linking it here.

Another tray of food included White Cheddar Cheez-its, Pirates Booty, white cheddar popcorn, Chicken-in-a-Biscuit, Wheat Thins, and pink Goldfish to continue the white and pink foods.

I really enjoy carrying a theme all throughout the party, if you can’t tell.

I found the cutest swan cups for all of the kids that we kept on the beverage table alongside “Swan Lake Lemonade” (pink, of course!) and the cutest swan mugs from Manor used for additional florals.

In addition to the feather and floral decor, we used swan stuffed animals like the ballerina swan pictured below from Manor.

Now to discuss my sweet girl’s dress! 

Every year Cuteheads makes a custom piece for the birthday girl to wear. This year, Esther must have read my mind because she created this piece that was perfect for a Swan Princess Ballerina party - light pink tulle with swans all over accessorized with ballet flats and a peony hair piece. 

Our swan princess ballerina was overjoyed when Rapunzel showed up to let her know Odette from Swan Lake sends birthday wishes! Fairest of All Parties has the BEST princesses in the Houston area. They worked with me tirelessly to try to have Odette from Swan Lake, but the costume was nowhere to be found and there was not enough time to create one. 

My daughter’s favorite princess at the time was Rapunzel, so it was a welcome surprise for her. Rapunzel sang (beautifully) with the kids, told stories, and shared a treasure chest of treasures. She even did face painting on the kids. 

We loved her so much, we used Fairest of All Parties for the 5th birthday (post coming soon) and are now planning number 6 with another Fairest of All Parties princess. 

Favors for the kids included a swan princess holder, swan princess “Thank You” sticker, princess crown full of candy, princess lip balm, princess rings, princess bracelets, and stickers tied with tulle.

99 Perspectives on a Single Love Story #8

A/N: The Story of Kurt and Blaine told through the eyes of everyone else but them. Each chapter is a different perspective in the ongoing tale of their love story.

I started something like this a while back - and now I’m taking the idea and really running with it. Each chapter is a ficlet of a different character at a different point in Kurt and Blaine’s life - documenting their love story. This starts in Audition, and each chapter will be paired with a different episode until reaching Dreams Come True.

I’m using this as a fun writing experiment for a) writing short things and b) writing things from a multitude of varying perspectives.   Have fun! :)

Finn Hudson (Furt) 

It’s Friday night, after the football game.  It hadn’t gone well.  Coach Beiste had spent a good twenty minutes lecturing them on teamwork and all that crap.  They had known.  It’s not like they hadn’t had a good streak before that night.  He’s tired and hungry and desperately needs a shower.  

He also knows Rachel is waiting for a phone call.  Not that she hadn’t been at the game - she had - but Rachel demands more energy from him than the rest of his life put together.  He’s not sure he has the energy tonight, but Rachel’s texts keep flying in.  

Rachel : Make sure when you get home you talk to Kurt!! Rachel : I’m Worried that he didn’t come to the game today. Rachel : It’s probably because of Karofsky and those other jerks.  Rachel : They’re being awful, Finn.  You need to step in.  Rachel : Finn, have you talked to Kurt yet???  Rachel : Have you??? Rachel : Are you ignoring me again?? 

He leaves his football equipment by the foot of the stairs, and throws his phone on the end table.  Rachel’s texts still light up the screen, and she’ll probably be pissed that he isn’t responding, but he isn’t entirely sure what she wants him to do.  Kurt’s fine - or at least he’s seemed fine since he’s been to Dalton.  Besides, he’s too tired to think about other people’s problems.  All he wants to do is grab a Mountain Dew and crash.  

Kurt is at the table when Finn walks into the kitchen - the table full of designs, notes, and planners for their parents’ wedding.  Finn’s not surprised, Kurt has taken his job as wedding planner pretty seriously.  There are details Finn’s never even heard of that Kurt seems to have covered.  Kurt had once tried to explain the Fung Schway or whatever to him, but it all sounds like a bunch of nonsense in his head.  

Kurt, however, isn’t alone.  His new friend from Dalton - Blaine - is with him, chatting with Kurt about the designs.  It’s almost like listening to a foriegn language.  Honestly, Finn’s gotten used to seeing Blaine around.  He’s been over at least twice a week since Kurt met him. (And always wearing that blazer.  Doesn’t he ever get sick -- or too hot -- wearing that thing?)  Finn doesn’t know what Blaine’s home life is like, or if he’s just interested in Kurt (are they dating? Finn can’t keep it all straight) but Blaine stays until Burt literally has to kick him out - Kurt complaining about it the whole time.  

Sometimes Finn wishes Rachel would stay that late, but Rachel has her beauty routine she has to do before bed, and therefore is always out the door promptly at 9:45pm, even if they’re in the middle of making out.  

“Finn! How was the game?” Kurt asks, not bothering to look up.  Finn doubts Kurt cares about the football game - he rarely ever asks.  

“Azimio fumbled. They scored a touchdown and we never really got the lead back,” Finn says with a grumble as he opens the fridge. “Beiste bitched us out forever after the game.” Oohh, Burt had left the makings of a sandwich. A sandwich sounds good, too. He pulls out the plate along with a bottle of Mountain Dew that is stashed in the back.

“Azimio is a clueless Neanderthal, who probably has his lackeys tying his shoes for him because he doesn’t know how to do it himself,” Kurt snarks.

Finn holds back a groan. He doesn’t want to get into it tonight with Kurt.

“Well, from what Kurt’s told me, it sounds like the guy would be better used as a tackle and not a wide receiver,” Blaine says, unexpectedly.

“You know something about football?” Finn asks.

“Yeah, footballs great!” Blaine says, with a higher level of enthusiasm than Finn thought would have from someone who went to a prep school. “Actually, I’m excited for next weekend because my dad and I are going to an Ohio State game. We don’t do much together, but we do that every year.”

“That’s totally cool man.”

“Yeah, it’s pretty fun.”

“Oh, so I guess that means you’re not coming to the wedding then, huh?” Finn asks. “I would have figured Kurt would have nagged you to be his date by now.”

“Finn!” Kurt snaps, not able to hide the coloring in his cheeks.  

So, Blaine isn’t his boyfriend? Finn’s so confused.  

“Um, no,” Blaine shakes his head politely, avoiding eye contact. “I mean, yes, Kurt asked, and it’s a nice gesture, but I wouldn’t want to impose on a family thing even if I could come.”

“I told you, it’s not an imposition.,” Kurt says, rolling his eyes as he begins to draw on one of the blank pads in front of him.

“So what kind of seats did you get?” Finn asks as he puts the finishing touches on the sandwich.

“They’re box,” Blaine shrugs off as if it weren’t a big deal.

“No way, man!

“Well, my dad’s boss lets him have a season ticket every now and then.”

“I’m totally jealous,” Finn says. “Did you hear they’re bringing Meyer in as starting quarterback?”

Blaine is quick to reply. “Which is ridiculous, I know. Johnson has the better arm.”

“Yeah, but Meyer has better aim and…”

Kurt’s gone quiet, which always makes Finn a little uneasy.  He’s stopped drawing on his pad to watch Finn and Blaine’s conversation carefully, a troubled look on his face.  Finn isn’t the most observant person in the world, but he recognizes that look.  It’s the same look Kurt used to give when Finn and Burt would talk about normal guy things together.  Rachel’s voice echoes in his head -- reminding him of how left out Kurt usually feels, and how he should make an effort to make him feel included.  

“So, what are you guys working on?” Finn asks as he pulls his chair up to the table, and sets his plate down, being careful enough not to set it on any of Kurt’s plans.

“Oh, Kurt’s a genius,” Blaine insists.  A proud smile grows along Kurt’s lips. “He’s found a way to work in faux ostrich feathers into the centerpieces. Just take a look at these designs, they’re amazing.”

“Cool.” Finn says, trying to sound sincere.  

If you had asked him for an honest answer, Finn wouldn’t have known the difference between what is sketched on the pad and anything else.  But before he could even comment again, Kurt is off, talking a mile a minute as he excitedly gives details about the wedding.  Finn nods along, trying to keep up.  He takes a quick glance at Blaine, thinking that maybe Blaine would be as lost as he is, but Blaine’s busy staring at Kurt, watching him fondly and smiling as if he had stumbled upon something amazing.  

How is he not Kurt’s boyfriend again?  

Finn takes his sandwich and his soda and quickly slips out of the kitchen as Kurt and Blaine enter their own little world again.  Finn might not be in tune with Kurt’s world but Blaine clearly is, and while Finn remains somewhat confused, he’s happy about that.  At least he’ll have something positive to report back to Rachel.
