Australian features have dominated the Audience Awards at the country’s biggest film fest, the Melbourne International Film Festival.
“ Luca Guadagnino’s coming of age drama, Call Me By Your Name, was voted the top film ahead of three Australian features in the top ten. The new Australian romantic comedy starring co-writer Osamah Sami, Don Hany and Helena Sawires, Ali’s Wedding, received a boost before its Australian release next week, ranking second most popular feature among MIFF viewers. The love for the Jeffrey Walker-helmed film follows on from the Sydney Film Festival, where it topped the audience awards. “

“I was born in Iran to Iraqi parents. My mum who is half Kurdish was forced to flee Iraq when Saddam Hussein took power. My father, on the other hand, was picked up by his uncle for spreading words against the dictator and he was tortured for 40 days and then he escaped prison just before they put him on an electric chair. My mum and dad met in the refugee camps in Abadan. From what dad has told me, it took him a nanosecond to decide. So up until his passing, they were still in love. Madly.
It’s funny because mum and dad never even referred to each other by their maiden names… or hardly, except in moments when dad was being cheeky. Mum would call Dad Abu-Osamah, which means Osamah’s Dad. Dad used her name much more than she used his. He had nicknames for her like Haloom and Halowa [nicknames relating to sweets].
I’m a bit of a romantic tragic at heart. So I thought if I’m going to tell stories…love would be a central theme. Whether it’s romantic as in Ali’s Wedding, or the love between a father and son. Love takes many shapes and forms, it really is what keeps us going. What allows us to overcome all types of adversities. And God knows regardless of where you’re born you’re going to have a tough time in this world, and love... it’s the sugar in the tea. Dad told me before he passed, we were sitting and talking about marriage and love and he said ‘You know son. I wish I told your mum that I love her.’ And I said, ‘What do you mean?’ And he said, ‘You know in our culture, it’s very difficult to express love.’ And then he said, ‘But I’m sure she knows’.”
Osamah Sami is an award-winning writer, actor and author of Iraqi heritage. Osamah is the co-writer and lead actor of Ali’s Wedding, a true story based on his unbelievable life.
Directed by Fadia Abboud, photographed by Hoda Afshar

Movie Review – Ali’s Wedding
Have you seen #AlisWedding? What did you think? @MadmanFilms @ScreenAustralia @OsamahSami
Tumblr media
TL;DR – A good reminder that we are all united as one because we all do stupid, stupid, stupid, things for love Score – 4 out of 5 stars Review – I’ve been sitting here looking at my screen on and off for the last hour wondering how to start this review. This is such an important film, a real water shed moment for Australian cinema, but how do you properly articulate that without sounding…

Amin Palangi’s (Love Marriage in Kabul, Audience Award, SFF 2014) debut narrative feature is a sensual psychological drama in which an Iranian arrives in Australia to reunite with his lover.
TENNESSINE follows Arash (Osamah Sami - 2023 Sundance Audience Award winner Shayda), who against his family’s wishes, arrives in Australia to reunite with the love of his life, the elusive Nazanin (Faezeh Alavi). While the couple is about to spend a romantic weekend in a cabin in the woods, the arrival of Nasser, Nazanin’s supervisor, (AACTA-nominated actor Robert Rabiah) interrupts the idyllic reunion Arash had hoped for and raises doubts about his relationship with Nazanin.
Spoken in Persian and English and set against a background of migration and the Australian landscape, TENNESSINE is a thoughtful drama with the taut energy of a thriller, portraying the effects of displacement and exploring themes of family duty, belonging and love.

Amin Palangi’s (Love Marriage in Kabul, Audience Award, SFF 2014) debut narrative feature is a sensual psychological drama in which an Iranian arrives in Australia to reunite with his lover. Arash (Osamah Sami, Ali’s Wedding, SFF 2017) defies his family’s wishes and travels from Iran to Australia. While he is ostensibly in Sydney to study, his main motivation is to be with the love of his life, Nazanin (Faezeh Alavi). Nazanin fails to fetch him at the airport as scheduled but all is forgiven when she whisks him away for a romantic weekend in a cabin in the country.
But there are bemusing signs at the cabin that a jetlagged and confused Arash struggles with. The arrival of Nasser (Robert Rabiah), Nazanin’s academic supervisor, further elevates Arash’s paranoia, setting the scene for a showdown.
Exploring themes of family duty, belonging and love, Tennessine is a thoughtful drama with the taut energy of a thriller. The 70th Sydney Film Festival: 07-18 June 2023
