Alcina is one of my absolute favourite operas, and this little aria is very dear to my heart. The role of Oronte was created for John Beard, barely 18 at the time, who started out as a boy soprano and had a long, extremely successful career ahead of him. Händel was the opposite of a hire-and-fire person - he loved his singers apparently and was very loyal to them. Personally, I think you can hear who the aria was written for if you pay attention. The tenor here vocally leaves many wishes open, but it doesn't matter - I have rewatched the aria so many times, and I always do it for Alice Coote who plays Ruggiero. Who can look at anything else if she is in the room? *edit: Tumblr "refuses to connect" to the unlisted vid, so here is the link.

It‘s even worse than I thought. Oronte comes into the scene (for no apparent reason) and then just tries to get the young widow to marry him instead of Leander or Damon????? The other two at least had like a fundational relationship with the widow, and he just shows up and goes „if you think about it, both of them are poor losers, I‘ll give you two tons of gold if you marry me“ and thinks that would work?????

A marvel of Roman engineering: the Vespasian-Titus tunnel.
Here we have one of the most impressive examples of how well they built in Ancient Rome.
Located in the Turkish province of Hatay, at the foot of the Nur Mountains and a few km from ancient Antioch, it is named after the emperor Vespasian who began the works and was followed by his son and successor, Titus.
Vespasian (reigned 69-79), ordered its construction to channel and divert the waters that came down from the mountain and flooded the city of Seleucia Pieria, an important port located at the mouth of the Orontes River.
It was dug in rock, using chisel and hammer, by slave labor, prisoners and hundreds of legionaries. It is approximately 1,380 m long, and is the longest hand-dug tunnel in the world. The work was so extensive that it lasted until the reign of Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD)
And it is curious that it has survived to this day practically intact.
