Pirate pants! Pattern by Ora Lin, the only change is a flat ass adjustment, sewn up in gray chambray with French seams and embroidery motifs from emblibrary.com.
All around a delightfully quick, satisfying, unfussy sew! I think it took me maybe 10-12 hours from cutting the pattern pieces out of the paper to wearable garment, and that's not accounting for breaks for means and like, some general dicking around. Would have been MUCH faster if I hadn't taken time to buy embroidery designs, tweak them, and run them.
In future I may add a few extra inches of length so they'll serve as full length pants if desired. As is they hit like, high ankle on me. (They're designed to be cropped, and worn tied to knee length, but I'm shorter than the pattern was designed for.)

Do you know that thing where you're feeling like crap but the productivity demons won't let you rest?
Tumblr media
I finally worked on the mock up I cut out at the start of November and sort of lost track of after assembling the skirt. Will this backfire on me? Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Hello, I saw your post and I am just kicking my feet, giggling excited for this. My question is if Donatello ever watched Bernadette Banner and what his opinions are on her considering she is also a fashion designer but makes “historic” clothes but is knowledgable on the fashion?
💜
Yes, he's aware of Bernadette Banner 😌....as well as Morgan Donner, Abby Cox, Cheyney Mcknight, Rachel Maksy, Karolina Żebrowska, Mariah Pattie, Ora Lin, Vincent Briggs-the list goes on and on. 😁
If you don't know where the clothing of the past came from, how can you create the clothing of the future? There are trends, patterns, and concepts that cannot be erased. Understanding the history of clothing is essential to design, just like understanding the first lines of digital code in computer science, or how the first telegraph made way for modern cellphones.
The echoes of history infuse the present with purpose and pave the way for the future, especially when it comes to fashion!
So, to answer your question, he's grateful for such detailed YouTube channels that solely focus on historical clothing and the sewing techniques used to create them. It actually cut his research in half as the channels did much of the heavy-lifting.
He realized that he didn't have to "rediscover the wheel," in that, he never had to stumble through figuring out things like what are the best felling stitches for hand sewing or what boning is best used for what purpose. Instead, he could stand on the knowledge of the clothing historians at his fingertips and carve his own path for his haute couture and street wear, if that makes sense! (BTW I'm kicking my feet for this as well! I can't wait to post what I've been working on!!! 😆)
Thanks for the ask! 😁💜

I made the Leah Blouse from Ora Lin Patterns!
This one is technically a mock-up, but it turned out fine. Lighting was not on my side for the picture though…

I made Ora Lin's newest pattern, the Leah top! I love it, and it was pretty easy!
The fabric was on sale for $3 a yard, so with the buttons, the materials only cost around $15!

I made an 18th century shirt today!!!
Tumblr media
My wardrobe gayness level has increased by at least 30% with this garment alone. But it could still be higher, guess I'll have to make more lol
Pattern under the cut
I followed this guide by Ora Lin on YouTube, they have some awesome patterns and make it super accessible and easy to follow so definitely check them out if you want to try making historical clothing!

What do you do after you've terrorized a blogging site with your indecision for 24 hours and then, due to Circumstances, had it all mean relatively little?
You make posts about your process.
By third-popular demand, I'm making the Sophie Dress by Ora Lin. (There's even more sizes on their website if you wanna make your own!)
First step is check if you have enough fabric. And I've got LOADS of this blue floral that I'm honestly starting to like less and less. Tons. Anything to get it out of my stash drawer, honestly.
Tumblr media
...I had 3,5 m. The pattern calls for 5. Ahm. Let's... Print out the pieces and check the instructions on where some definitely intentional color blocking might be possible.
Tumblr media
Step one, print and assemble all the pieces, took over an hour. Step two is to adjust the pieces to your size. Which I only needed to do with the usual piece. Might need even more fabric now though.
Time to see what 3,5 m will get me.
Tumblr media
It gets me all the pieces, minus some ruffle volume, the lining and the pockets. And the front skirt needs piecing, but it'll get gathered anyway, so I can afford to lose a bit of width there. Hopefully. Guess I'm lining this with flannel. Definitely not gonna regret that the second someone remembers central heating exists. Or spring comes. It'll all be fiiiiine.
Next step: carefully making and pinning and organizing all the pieces that can already be sewn.
Tumblr media
This is cotton sateen, and it turns out I can have organization, or I can have my pieces not be on the floor.
It was at this point that I remembered the cuffs needed interfacing. Which... I might still have some of? Not sure how firm, though. Color is also a toss-up.
Tumblr media
Two interfacing cuffs were cut, a vague plan for dyeing this thing after the fact was forming, and I was ready to get on with pin--right, they need attaching.
Tumblr media
Past me was very responsible and emptied the iron after use. Present me is wondering if the currently present legionella bacteria in our tap water (most German households rent voluntarily, or so I've been told) die during the steam function, or if they survive because it's too brief and I'd be basically inhaling them directly.
Tumblr media
Nothing but the finest distilled water for my precious second-cheapest iron money can buy. Yes, I did end up filling this all the way up before remembering you don't use steam when applying iron-on interfacing, thank you for asking.
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, I'm still surprised I got away with doing that without a pressing cloth. Now they just need to cool down and get pinned.
Tumblr media
Okay, it's pinned beautifully, I have the machine out, I'm 7 hours into this sewing project and finally, finally, it's time to plug this in and...
Tumblr media
The nightlight is on. Because it's one in the morning. When did it turn one? When did I last pee? Why are my fingers aching?

It’s done! 1860s inspired blouse- pattern is by Ora Lin and worked up like a DREAM (I did the waistband option because I didn’t want/need the amount of ease that original blouses would have because fabric is Expensive and I want to wear this with pants too, but this did sacrifice historical accuracy) in black linen :)
Tumblr media
Actually so pissed off that I waited until after seeing Nosferatu to start this blouse… fitting the sleeves is making me wanna kms tho

There is so much fabric in this chemise it'd accomodate a ghibli goddess.
As for the belts, I have free patterns to share!
The free Black Snail Patterns dropwaist belt pattern
The Ora Lin's free pattern.
They're a perfect scrap fabric pattern and take me like two hours to fully hand sew.
Interest check

I'm probably going to be running a little low stakes sewalong again at the end of this January ('25).
Should we do the Italian chemise or the simplified shirtsleeves? This remains subject to my whims, but:

STATUS REPORT:
Tumblr media
Final Billy bookcase assembled
Tumblr media
Kallax unit rotated, most crafting items organized (yarn and other miscellaneous art supplies will be filling in the remaining 3 compartments). Fabric is sorted by fiber and pattern, and I can actually SEE all of it. I had about 6 separate instances of “oh yeah, I was going to make X out of that.” So in the near ish future, I will be making: Ora Lin’s Sophie dress, a summer weight nightgown, 2 striped petticoats, a tartan wool waistcoat, and one black and white striped work shirt.
Tumblr media
Still have some things to go through, but I’ve weeded through my belongings and bagged up things to donate. My next day off is Thursday, so I’ll make a run then.
Those 2 large blue things are garment archival boxes, eventually I’ll get to the large clear tote that’s parked underneath my work table (to the best of my memory, it’s 2 antique men’s dress suits, but there might be some other things in there as well. I hope I have enough tissue).
Not pictured: bags of fabric and reference materials that could come in handy at work and therefore will be going there because I just don’t have the room here. Also, a bag of books I’ve read and want to save to give to friends/swap with the little free libraries in my neighborhood. We’ve got 3, and it gives me the extra motivation I sometimes need to go for a little walk! They’re closed for the winter though—the homeowners pull em out and pack ‘em away so they don’t have to worry about things getting wet (which has been warranted, with our weather recently).
All in all: I got more done than I thought I would today! I obviously had hoped to get everything sorted and perfectly tidy, but I didn’t realistically think I would so I’m glad I got this far! A nice refresh to start the new week, and enough little organizational tasks for a few more nights that won’t be entirely overwhelming.
Alright lads Sunday to do list:
Make my bed so I don’t lay back down in it
Put on slippers so I have warm feet and don’t dread leaving my carpeted bedroom
Clear off small kallax shelf
Move both kallax shelves out of the way
Bring Billy bookshelf boxes in one by one to build in place
Remove books from their makeshift shelves and put them on new Billy bookshelves
Organize sewing supplies in the newly vacated space where the books were
Determine wether I can still use the kallax units in my bedroom or if I should have my brother bring them to the basement so we can organize down there
