hot take maybe, but I only truely like prideshipping if it’s heavily unrequited and obsessive on Seto’s end, because of two reasons.

Reason #1. the fact that ignoring romance it’s basically freaking canon. The spirit beat kaiba in a duel and made him experience death by being killed by his favorite game than doesn’t give him a second thought until Mokuba and DeathT( early manga) But kaiba is fixated on this experience for, seemingly months. Obsessed with the only person who’s ever won against him and designing new technology and an entire amusement park attraction in order to kill him. He’s putting innocent bystanders and his own brother in danger in order to humiliate and destroy his seemingly only equal. Than he loses.

in duel monsters Kaiba creates a tournament and enters Yuugi as a top level duelist and monitors his every movement throughout the tournament. As the spirit is losing hope for winning against Slifer and Marik, Kaiba shows up just to tell him that only he’s allowed to win against the pharaoh, and afterwards he straight up tells him that the only thing he wants to do in that moment is duel him. In the finals Kaiba demands that Yuugi put Slifer in his deck in order to have the ultimate battle that he’s deemed worthy against his greatest rival because anything less wouldn’t be worthy of the title of the king of games. The title he never wins

in Dsod Kaiba builds an advanced AI based off Atems personality and strategies but ultimately hates it because it’s not really him. Kaiba collects almost all of the pieces of the millennium Puzzle and builds a ELEVATOR into SPACE( probably costing millions of dollars to build) in order to rebuild the puzzle because he believes that it will bring back Atem. He announces Another tournament in order to get the last missing pieces of the puzzle because he’s desperate for closure against him and Atem. After the puzzle is destroyed he literally breaks the laws of REALITY in order to go to the after life for his closure duel. And it’s left unknown if he ever won against the man who made Kaiba strive to be a better duelist, create new advanced inventions and technology that ultimately make the world a better place all because of Kaiba’s unhealthy relationship with winning and losing.

Once he finds you, you're placed on his office, but you're not immediately punished, he likes to build suspense onto you.

You sit there, watching him type away on his laptop, you have no idea what he's doing, until around 30 minutes later, he'd slam the laptop shut, glaring deep into your soul.

He'll scold you for a bit, asking if you're stupid, some degrading, asking why'd you escape, then he'd call one of his bodyguards to come collect you, locking you in his room for hours.

All in all, you'd probably never see the light of day again.

A Seto psychological assessment

So, I said I was gonna do this and now I finally did it. Behold, a Seto Kaiba psychological assessment about interpersonal relationships! (I'm gonna try to make this as simple as possible for everyone <3)

I'm gonna consider original dub Seto ONLY, since the american version totally fucked his character up.

ATTACHMENT STYLE

According to Ainsworth and Bowlby's studies there are 4 Attachment styles:

Anxious/Preoccupied

Avoidant/Dismissive (ding ding ding!)

Disorganized/Fearful

Secure

What are Attachment styles (or Internal Working Models)? In children, we can find that they behave in different ways according to the presence or absence of their parents in an environment: anxious children have a deep fear of being abandoned or left alone so they act really upset or even cry when their parents are not around; avoidant/dismissive children usually hate to depend on others and don't care if they are left alone (they like minding their business); disorganized children are harder to understand since they act fearful towards their parents but at the same time they want to be close to them; finally secure children have a healthy relationship with their parents.

I think you've already noticed which one fits Kaiba the most: of course he's gonna be an Avoidant child!

(Mind that I think his attachment style CHANGED after he and Mokuba got adopted by Gozaburo, so there's gonna be a paragraph about their biological parents' death, because I think Seto's behaviour was much different before the whole orphanage and adoption thing)

The attachment style of a child is of course going to define their behaviour as adolescents and adults. The attachment styles of teenager/adults are pretty much the same and now I'm gonna list any behaviour that confirms Seto's attachment (Avoidant/Dismissive): as the Adult Attachment Interview (the AAI, a psychological test) suggests, avoidant people tend to belittle or even ignore their own emotions concerning their relationships with anyone (Seto openly admits to love and care about Mokuba and no one else, but even this happens rarely in the series and when it does he's pretty much always ALONE, when no one can hear or see him. It happens only once in Noah's Arc in the anime, when he gives us that ssweet face in front of Yugi and Co). The fact that he avoids his emotions about relationships and attachment with caregivers is also held up by the fact that he never brings up his parents, nor even with Mokuba. In Noah's Arc only Mokuba says something about them; Seto doesn't answer. Avoidant people also tend to devaluate their attachment with their caregiver (in this case we're gonna consider Gozaburo as the “caregiver/parent” because he gave our boy big trauma): if I remember correctly, Seto says he stopped calling Gozaburo “father” at one point. HOWEVER, the rest of the Avoidant assessment doesn't really fit Seto's behaviour, because he remembers very well what Gozaburo did to him (being physically and psychologically abusive) and doesn't idealize him as a good parent (which is what Avoidant people tend to do), so I think he's got also a little bit of Preoccupied and Secure characteristics in him (I'm gonna talk about this in a sec) and I believe it's because he's got a little of the positive influence of his biological parents in him AND he's not an easy guy to control/influence.

According to the AAI, Secure teenagers/adults are fully conscious of the abuse they suffered (I think Seto totally is, he just – you know – AVOIDS it) and are able to find a way to be happy and healthy again (I mean, I don't really think made it to the end, but he's still young and he's got a long road ahead, maybe he'll fully heal some day and I believe he's capable of doing that, because we've already seen his character development since the begninning of manga to the movie DSOD. Mokuba has been his strength and, you may like it or not, Yugi and Co (especially Atem) being a good challenge, nosy and friendly helped him too, which is cute (also Atem and Jonouchi made him reconsider playing games for love and fun, instead of only winning, so he found that old spark he loved playing games for again). Also, this is a little unrelated to the attachment itself, but a Secure person can also be defined as an autonomous and functional adult and I think he is, since he's a freaking CEO(?).

Now, let's talk about the Preoccupied people a little: a part of the AAI says that some individuals feel anger and/or conflict towards one or both parents. I mean. I don't think I have to explain this one, but Seto perfectly shows he hasn't moved on from the hatred he feels fro Gozaburo (and rightly so, I might say lmao). In Battle City he destroys an entire Island just to get rid of Gozaburo's memory and Obelisk representes his wrath and hatred (the soundtrack itself is called Wrath of God).

So, there we have it: Seto's an Avoidant child/teen, with some Secure and Preoccupied behaviour.

Some time later, another theory entered the chat: Lyons-Ruth presented her classification system of the attachment adding new styles, which are Hostile and Helpless. HH behaviour indicates that traumas are still present and working (ouch).

Hostile individuals are busy trying to control their own unwanted emotions and feelings of vulnerability (lol, Seto I see you): they are pretty much in denial, trying to hide their feelings of fear and helplessness. They also tend to identify themselves as their abusive parent and they hate it (yeah... I mean, this is so Seto).

Now, as I said in the beginning, I'm gonna talk a little bit about his attachment style BEFORE the orphanage thing. Seto used to smile (a lot), play many different games with Mokuba (which suggests they grew up in a positive environment where the parents were loving and the family as a whole was functional, since there seemed to be no hostility betweet the two brothers), be supportive, be happy and active. This is important, because this indicates that the little guy had good caregivers (as I said the family was functional and he had and still has a good relationship with his younger brother) and that means: Secure attachment style. Being Secure means not freaking out about a caregiver's absence and this might be a little stretch since grief is no joke at all, but even if it's a traumatic event, Seto handled it like a champ. (Of course this doesn't mean that didn't hurt and he didn't suffer. Quite the contrary. But he's been very strong since childhood).

I think this is it for the attachment style! Moving on to ...

GRIEF IN CHILDREN

So, we all know Seto and Mokuba lost their parents in an accident when they were children (I think Seto was about 8 or 9 yo and Mokuba was 4). Studies suggest that 4 yo children start to understand how death works (it's irreversible and universal, that means that they know who dies won't come back and that everyone will have the same fate sooner or later), whilst 6 yo and older children fully understand other implications (e.g. vital functions - like breathing - stop, and so on).

Now, of course this is considered as a very traumatic event for children to go through, but they can be calmed if treated right. Which didn't happen with Seto and Mokuba of course (poor babies).

Not only they suffered the sudden loss of their parents, but they also had to face heartless relatives who didn't want them and abandoned them in an orphanage. At that point Seto decided to step in as a father for Mokuba, which is HUGE for an 8 yo child who doesn't even know to tie his shoes yet (but is really great at chess, yo!)(just kidding).

What the studies tell us is that children who suffer a sudden loss of their parents also lose their only source of safety and support, which will make them feel like they're in danger and abandoned. What emotional reactions this may cause: sadness, anger, anxiety, apathy, shame and guilt. I'm pretty sure Seto felt all of this, but ignored it and tried to stay focused for Mokuba, which is sweet and a great proof of psychological stregth.

Physical symptoms: headaches (I'm sure Seto gets a lot of them), anxiety, sleep disorders (like, come on...), always scared of what could happen to other people (you may argue Seto doesn't give a shit about anybody, but everytime Yugi and Co are in danger, Seto's always there ready to help even if he doesn't admit it), always on the alert.

However, the most interesting bit is what a loss like this causes to children's relationship with their peers: they start to isolate themselves and start to show aggressive or hostile behaviour, which is exactly what Seto does. He's definitely a loner even as a teenager and he's a little hostile and dismissive towards everybody, especially his peers.

So, I think that's all...? If anything else comes to mind I will edit this post and add it, but I think that's pretty much it. I hope you enjoyed this!

I decided to be brave and share my fictional crushes! 😖🫡 Feel free to either agree or roast me! (Civically of course!) I'd love to see others fictional crushes and gush over them as well! So don't be shy in sharing them under the replies!

So to first start off...

Him💜

Yami Yugi/Atem (Yu-Gi-Oh! DM/DSOD) | Main Crush - My first anime fictional crush 💜✨🌟 (and still is to this day! And has been recently the cause for all those self ship/self insert reblog posts on my other blog, as embarrassing as it sounds....) This man has inadvertently popped back into my brain all of sudden and slowly got me back to hyper fixating on YGO, (in the year of our lord saviour 2024), specifically for him 💜! There's really a plethora of reasons why I enjoy and appreciate him as a character (ie his personality, aura, kindness, complexity and flaws as a character, his voice - both in English and Japanese 😳 etc. - if anyone's interested maybe I might make a seperate post about it and share my headcanons for him perhaps)

2. Seto Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh! DM/DSOD) - Do I really need to say anything? 🤷🏾‍♀️ Same reasons applied as Yami/Atem really! The guy’s iconic, what can I say?

3. Dartz (Yu-Gi-Oh! DM) - Unpopular opinion/hot take but I think he’s pretty underrated as a villain (fuck him for making Yami Yugi cry + manipulating him and everyone else - Affectionately?? Just so my words don’t get twisted out of context, I’m appreciating him as a villain/character here, so don’t get it twisted). Is the story a hit or a miss or is it necessary? Can’t really say for sure, sorry🤷🏾‍♀️.

It’s been a long time I watched YGO, so go easy on me and take it with a grain of salt. All I will say honestly, is that I really like his design, him as a character (I think there’s a lot of missed potential that could’ve been explored more) and his voice (English preferably, Wayne Grayson’s performance as Dartz really did it for me! No hate towards the Japanese VA/Dub, just a preference towards his eng voice)

4. Pantalone (Genshin Impact) - Okay, so here’s the thing with him…If I happen to come across a guy with this much drip, charm and mysterious aura, with glasses to boot than I’m already sold! I haven’t played much Genshin in a long time, so I’m not sure what role he plays into the story. (I’d love to hear your thoughts and theories, though no spoilers please! 😊)

I’ve only seen snippets of clips and fanart of him and the fatui from here and there, but I hope he’s playable in the near future.

If Arlecchino (Father - MORE LIKE DADD-), can become playable in the future, then so can he (among other fatui members, aside from Childe).

5. Boothill (Honkai Star Rail) - I don't know about you guys, but ever since he's been leaked (and now recently added to the game have seen his character trailer - the way he just sauves and moonwalked like the smooth criminal he is did it for me!) I just adore him - Design, personality, voice everything! I love me a spunky, sassy rootin tootin space ranger cowboy that loves to cause havoc and chaos! (and serves cun-) I just think he’s neat! (Also is it just me or does his theme song in the character trailer sounded something you would hear in a freakin Ford Truck Commercial, his theme screams pure “America. Freedom, F yeah!” Vibes. PLEASE TELL ME I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT THINKS THIS?! I JUST FIND IT FUNNY TO ME)

6. Miguel O'Hara (Across The Spiderverse) - Haven’t seen the movie yet (dw I plan to watch it but PLEASE NO SPOILERS!) but this man is everywhere and I don’t blame you! I’ve seen fanart/edits of him (especially ones whenever they show his fangs 😳👀) and honestly it’s on me because I been rewatching ColeyDoesThings video on him and it immediately got me back to start watching the spider verse movies (it’s on my to do list) So thanks Coley! (You should go check out her YouTube videos on everything fandom related, it’s great!)

7. Lycaon (Zenless Zone Zero) - I’ve recently started playing ZZZ and so far it’s pretty fun! I’ve seen so many clips and fanart of this dude it’s not even funny. He’s pretty cool and got a nice design and voice. And that’s all I’m gonna say. I think this video on Twitter should speak for itself:

Oh, that's a quick question to make not to answer because you have activated my trap card >:3 Favorite movie question, where I answer all the ways that I can to that question and I choose to not notice if I'm being annoying while explaining my love (*lying*, that's why I made a short version to answer this, to avoid annoying).

Short version:

Amazed to find out its existence, still amazed from start to finish.

Got obsessed with Seto Kaiba's obsession to get his bf back to life and marrying him💕

All this time yu gi oh! was teaching us, about heart, about dedication, and about how gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day. (I thought this twice in the movie)

for some unknown reason to me some people think or thought at the moment that at the end Kaiba time traveled, but I'm on team dimension traveled (come on, it's on the name of the movie)

And I've analyzed this movie so many times and I'll keep doing it, I love DSOD so much, fav movie, my shipper heart can't and won't let it go💕

Long Version:

warning I can and will explain why I loved this movie divided on scenes (mostly in order) on this version and feel free to picture me like the image below

So I was away of the fandom, then re entered around when the movie came out, I didn't re join for the movie, I had just rejoined and was searching the tags when found out a screenshot or gifset from the hologram duel in the movie, and I was like "this is so beautiful! where is this from?!" then found the movie.

The reaction to the actual movie was me squeeing, loving the style, I found my love for Takahiro Kagami way to draw the characters and love that Kazuki Takahashi himself had worked on the movie directly, also love the palette colors, the plot. everything in that movie is a work of art and I've and will continue analyzing it forever.

replaced the bbt movie as the best ygo movie, and also replaced whichever I had on 1st place in general as my favorite movie (still is)

I love so much the plot and how they took it as continuation for the manga, because it was so unfair for Seto to be negated the last moments of seeing Atem on earth then.

and as I said in my short answer, I got obsessed with Seto's steps of grief.

how the duel with the I.A Atem was in a church scenery, he is so in love with him and wanted to marry him the faster he could.

I know now that it can also be read as in "Is in a church so it can also be the part of him giving a funeral to Atem" but fuck it, this is about my 1st reaction and also I can prove that can also means what I 1st thought and was that Kaiba was practicing for his wedding duel.

we'll go back to this a bit later.

loved that the I.A got gold arm bracelets, so lovely, and oh boy (gn), when the scene of Jonouchi is saved by Atem I was like "!!!! ATEM HAS THE GOLD ARM BRACELETS! (or maybe he was just using the I.A to save Jonouchi or was the I.A itself? however my first thought and the one I keep thinking is the real answer is the one on Caps)

now let's talk about finding the puzzle pieces scene and Diva using his dimension powers to banish people and how Seto avoided it with tech, I went 🥰 "yeah! boy you got this!" and also yelled because that moment pointed Seto's plan to bring back Atem.

the miracle! oh god, I cried, the battle city tournament memories of their souls crossing, oh boi (gn), their souls crossed again 😭💕 they were so connected.

let's continue, loved the tournament to get the puzzle complete again, I was alone watching this but I pointed to the duel disks and I was like holy shit is a wedding ring! is a ring for Atem!

allow me to explain myself, he made just 2 duel disks and they're themed with their colors combined (the black of Atem and the blue of Kaiba for his own disk, the white of Kaiba and the pink of Atem for the other), he gives it to Yugi because that's the vessel, but the disks as shown in the getting the puzzle pieces scene has the power to stabilize the person to the dimension that currently is. Seto planed to bring Atem with the puzzle but keep him on earth with the duel disk! the guy is so in love and I love him for it.

in love with self sacrifice Seto for Atem to be back again in the duel vs Diva, I cried there too, and specially because he was right.

again we're reminded that "Gay love can pierce through the veil of death and save the day." (ghost facers, supernatural 03x13)

and the end using the dimension canon and arriving to his bf resting place was *chef kiss* 🥰💕✨ go for him and bring his ass back!

later found transcend game manga and just made me love the movie even more 😭💕

I have seen this movie in 3 languages:

1st on Eng dub, didn't grow with it but they did a good job, I loved it :)

2ndly on Jap with subs, loved it more, Atem's voice in the "will see about that" phrase 🥰💕💕💕💕💕💕💕, Seto's voice in the is not a monster is a God , uff hot.

3rdly in Lat. Spanish, sadly not with all the original voice actors, since the ones that were in charge to dub it didn't ask correctly the voice actors for their help 😭, still did a good job to dub

now I wait for a possibly 30 year anniversary movie and see how they talk about Yugi's or Atem's hair, haha 2 years to see if it happens (bbt is for the 10, dsod for 20... is too delusional to hope for a 30 anniversary movie? imo it's fine)

DSOD is really confusing me right now because of this one shot. 

Everyone else in the flashback scene is animated with the EXACT same out as the anime ending except for these two, Marik seems to be wearing his battle city outfit just in black or a dark blue. Ryou seems to be wearing something similar to his casual outfit throughout the movie and not based on his outfit in the series. He seems to be wearing a light blue and white shirt with black or dark blue stripes and a long sleeve underneath

Also Ryou’s hair is nothing like it is in the movie, it has it’s box shape from the anime but at the same time it’s not really on model and has random spikes on the top like how in the anime his hair doesn’t really have consistencies. Also his hair looks strangely more pointy and messy than it is in the rest in the movie

Here's a little thing about their new Friday night ritual they've developed through living together, wine, pizza and horror movies. Sounds great.

(Post DSOD, characters are 18+ and in the UK you can legally drink at that age.)

Ryou smiled as Yugi filled his glass again with the wine they both loved. This had become one of their Friday night rituals since they’d started living together. They’d get some wine, order pizza, watch bad horror movies and talk. 

He loved these nights, well, he loved any opportunity he got to spend time alone with Yugi. He wasn’t sure of the moment he’d realised that what he felt for him was stronger than friendship, but he’d embraced that feeling all the same. 

As of yet he hadn’t found a way to voice his feelings, but he was sure he would eventually…maybe. He sipped his wine. 

It may have been a long time since the spirit of the ring left along with the Pharaoh to the afterlife, but he still struggled with that feeling of loneliness which came with having so much room in your head to fill with troublesome thoughts. 

Yugi felt the same, and so it had made perfect sense for them to move in together, to become roommates in an effort to comfort each other and stave off that loneliness they both felt which no one else in their group of friends would ever really understand. 

He leaned back against the cushions of their sofa, laughing at the current scene playing out on the screen. 

Yugi moved to lean against him, Ryous' arm draped around his shoulders automatically. This was what Yugi was like when they drank, very affectionate and cuddly and he never minded that. 

He’d take any opportunity he could to be close to this man who had claimed his heart so completely. 

“I think about him a lot, ya know?” Yugi said suddenly, a slight slur to his sad words. 

Ryou took another sip of his wine, nodded, and then remembered Yugi couldn’t see him. 

“I know.” He said. 

“I never asked…” Yugi paused and turned his head to look at him for a moment. “Did you ever have what I had with Atem with…yours?” 

Ryou hummed, he knew what Yugi had with Atem. After everything that happened with Diva, Yugi had told him that he saw Atem again, that it broke his heart even more because it was just confirmation that what they had really was over. 

When he’d told Ryou what had happened when Atem was a spirit in the millennium puzzle he hadn’t been all that surprised. He knew the two were close, so that they had formed some kind of physical relationship beyond host and spirit didn’t shock him. 

“No.” He said after a moment. “Bakura had a lot of pain and anger in his heart, he had no room for me… anyway, I don’t even know how it would have worked…” 

Yugi nodded and turned away from him, finishing the wine he had in his glass and sighing as he placed it on the table next to him. 

“It was an accident for us.” Yugi said. “Well…not an accident…um, anyway, you know the word I mean.” 

Ryou hummed in agreement, but he had no idea what Yugi meant. 

“Anyway!” Yugi said loudly. “I just…when we realised we could talk properly face to face in the Puzzle, we spent a lot of time there and one day I just… I looked at him and I was like ‘I want you to kiss me.’ You know?” 

“Uh… yeah?” He said quietly, finishing the rest of his wine too. 

“And he did and it was…” Yugi stopped and sighed happily. “I should move on really… but like, have you ever looked at someone and just…really wanted them to kiss you?” Yugi asked. 

Ryou sighed softly, shrugging as he looked down at where Yugi's head was resting against his shoulder, untamed spikes brushed against his cheek as he moved. 

“Not that often.” He said. 

Yugi looked up at him and Ryou found himself breathless for a moment. Yugi's cheeks were a delicate pink from the alcohol, his eyes so soft and relaxed but full of curiosity as he moved again, sitting up and turning to face him. 

“Ryou?” Yugi asked, tilting his head to the side like a curious puppy. 

“Yeah?” He replied, shifting to put his glass on the table next to Yugis, intending to reach for the bottle again. 

“Has anyone ever kissed you?” Yugi asked him. 

Ryou bit his lip and looked to the side, his alcohol clouded mind trying to consider the possibilities of this conversation and where it would get him and why that really mattered at all really. 

“I’ve never really wanted someone to…” He said awkwardly, looking back at Yugi who was waiting patiently for his answer, his eyes moved down to Yugi's lips without his permission and he understood what Yugi had said earlier about looking at someone and wanting them to kiss you. 

“No one?” Yugi asked, his voice a little disappointed. 

“Well I guess if anybody were to kiss me,” He paused and shrugged. “…I would want that person to be you.”

He was so glad to have said something finally after months of living with Yugi and having to learn more about him and realising that what he wanted from him wasn’t just friendship. 

Without the confidence the alcohol had given him, he probably wouldn't have said anything for years, if at all.

Yugi smiled at him, a soft laugh falling from his lips as he moved a little closer, his leg pressed against Ryou’s as he simply looked at him and he wasn’t quite sure where to go from here. Luckily Yugi seemed willing to show him. 

He found himself leaning closer when Yugi did, his heart in his throat as a gentle hand came to rest against his cheek and hold him still. Yugi was so warm, and he was so close… but there was hesitation in his actions, he was waiting for something. 

His eyes moved to Yugi's lips again slowly. He wanted Yugi to kiss him so desperately. 

Yugi laughed quietly then moved forward, eyes closing and Ryou followed suit. His lips were so soft and warm as they pressed against his slowly, gently, and despite the haze in his mind from the alcohol Ryou felt his stomach fill with butterflies as the reality of what was happening hit him.

Yugi was kissing him, he was kissing Yugi, and it was better than he ever thought it would be. 

He sighed happily when Yugi moved away, their lips parted but he didn’t pull away completely, his eyes opened briefly, catching Yugi's questioning gaze and he smiled, moving his hands to Yugi's face and pulling him closer again. 

Each gentle kiss seemed too short, questioning and searching but Ryou was happy to reassure Yugi that this was what he wanted, that this was so much more than okay with him. 

He met Yugi's testing kisses with his own, soft sighs left his lips in between those gentle kisses and eventually the short kisses grew longer, Yugi pressed closer to him then shifted away for just long enough to clumsily slide into his lap. 

Ryous hands slid down to his hips, holding them firmly as Yugi's lips found his again.

let's see... to answer your question... it's a little bit of a long story, so i'll make a read more! (there is a TLDR at the bottom if you want)

in late 2017, twitch was broadcasting a marathon of Duel Monsters. at that time, my partner, Jamie, was getting really invested into it, since he had mentioned how he liked it when he was younger. for me, i had heard of YGO on TV when i was younger too, but i felt like i couldn't get invested in it, so i never kept track of it. i was vaguely aware of YGO's continued spin-offs, but i never gave it a chance.

so, after a few weeks, his passion about the show and how much he loved Atem made me want to try giving it a shot, too. because of Megumi Ogata's Yugi Mutou, i was interested in starting from the Very Beginning with the Toei season (season 0). i was curious how subbed YGO might be.

so, we watched all of the Toei season together. i came to really love Yugi the most, as he is a very kindhearted protag (my favorite type of protag) as well as Jounouchi and Kaiba. i was surprised at how the story was about our connections with others. i really loved how different it was compared to what i expected or remembered about the series from the past. the focus on games in general as a medium for the story was really good.

i was hooked on it and respected it. i finally understood the appeal. i wanted to jump into Duel Monsters (sub) right away. and we did! we watched it all together, starting in early 2018.

it took several months to watch, and i enjoyed it! i remember feeling shocked and kinda sad that "the shadow realm" wasn't real, lol. i didn't realize it had been a show that was censored like that. we even watched the DSOD movie after. it was really cool... Yugi really is a character i adore!

for about about a year or so after, i was really invested into puzzleshipping. i didn't draw very much at the time because of my severe untreated carpal tunnel though, so there aren't much past works from me, nor did i ever make any ship art.

Jamie got invested into the spin-off YGO and started watching VRAINS while it was airing after seeing a post about Yusaku/Playmaker on here. i gave it a few episodes, and immediately gravitated to liking Ai. but, i was going through a tough time personally and felt a little fatigued (in general) and of YGO because it was such a long series. i didn't think i could do another 150+ anime. so, i dropped it after 3 episodes and did other things for a few years.

he would talk to me about how much he loved how VRAINS was going and about datastormshipping, and i happily listened even though i didn't understand. it was nice to be a support at the time when i felt too tired and stressed to participate. this went on into 2019 as it finished, and well after into 2020. though, it shifted into aiballshipping, but he kept me safe from spoilers.

on a whim, in the middle of 2022, i suggested we watch VRAINS together because i felt up for it again, and i wanted to watch an anime together. i was excited to learn about Ai more, as i saw some vague spoilers here and there about him. i immediately grew to love Yusaku and Ai a whole lot! i was excited every weekend we could watch together. it only took 3 months to watch all 120 episodes because i was that invested. i again felt like a fool for not continuing in the past...

...and you know the rest. it's impacted me a lot. i haven't stopped thinking or talking about them for nearly a year now. i'm even more impacted by their story than the Toei season or DM. i like the characters and story a lot more for VRAINS, so it's my favorite. i even picked up Duel Links because i wanted to learn how to play (i'm kind of bad at it). i'm currently in the middle of ZEXAL now, but i want to check out all the others eventually, too. exciting!

TLDR:

i got into it in 2017 because of my partner's influence. watched season 0, DM, and DSOD and loved it. fell off for personal difficulties in real life and fatigue with long series. picked up VRAINS again in 2022 after dropping it in 2018 after 3 episodes. am now insane (positive) and invested in YGO because it's so fun and good. i'm happy to be here and hope i can be for a long time

So sorry for the delay on this one! I kept having issues with my draft not saving and needing to start over.

I sincerely think Ryou was my first favorite character from Yugioh, even before Kaiba, if you can believe it.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

When I was first introduced to Yugioh, what struck me about him and made me latch onto him was the obvious emotional pain. At the time I was just starting to figure out my own depression and anxiety that my family was oblivious to, and I think I just related to that lack of support. I guess this is the answer for Question 25.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

How excited her gets about food, actually. He and Joey are probably almost equally enthusiastic about it, and it's adorable.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

How they changed his dad in DSOD. I preferred it when the dad was an oblivious nerd just trying to give his son a cool gift instead of being a power-hungry weirdo.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

This probably sounds silly, but I want him living his best life in a Pokemon game with a team that he's bonded to, getting to live an RPG adventure just like Monster World, but a little bit safer. I want him taking a nap leaning on his Altaria with an Absol curled up at his feet, looking like it's asleep but keep watching. And don't forget his floaty little Shuppets hovering about.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Friend of Foe by t.A.T.u. because I watched so many AMVs at the time that I was introduced to Yugioh. The song captures his poignant and desperate confusion with his own life and identity.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Honestly, aside from Question 1, nothing specific comes to mind aside from general nerdiness. I used to have a bad sweet tooth, like I imagine he does, but not so much anymore.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

Making him a sweet spooky boi with 27 tarot card decks at home that dresses like he's going to bible study. Also, a big one is giving him visible scars from all the stuff Y B has put him through: the arm, the left hand, the chest.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

I wouldn't say despise. Not sure I'd say I dislike anything the fandom does with him too much

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

I imagine he's a night owl, so as long as he keeps things quiet at night, we wouldn't have a problem.

10. Could you be best friends with this character?

Definitely! We could probably introvert in the room together, doing our own things, or chat about art.

11. Would you date this character?

Again, I'm married, but if I had the chance and Y B was gone for good, absolutely.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

I've actually always headcanoned that Ryou had a Catholic mom and she tried to pass on her faith to him, but it didn't fully stick, necessarily. This isn't from nowhere, I swear. In the church scene in season five, in the English dub, Ryou goes into the church saying "I should be safe in here" after running from a disembodied voice. I think that means that he must have some small level of faith if he thinks the church itself will ward off the evil.

13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?

You know I can't ever just pick one ship. I'm a multishipper. It's never just one.

Euroshipping, Minorshipping, and Puffshipping are my top three.

Mumbleshipping, Rollshipping, and Teaseshipping are my top poly ships for him.

Honorable mention to Graceshipping, cause I think he and Ishizu could be so damn sweet together, and that's my #1 straight ship for him.

Tendershipping, actually. I don't hate on it or people who like it, and I have a soft spot for some of his ships, but I just can't see Yami Bakura the way a lot of the fandom sees him, and that's where it comes from. I don't wanna get into it because this isn't a Y B post. I'll just leave it at that. No hate here, just a different perspective.

17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?

Deathshipping. I can appreciate some of the art and some of the sillier conceptions of this ship, but I'm not personally into it.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

I haven't read the manga, but I've seen enough moments from it of Ryou and Joey together (included what looked like stealing a camel together), and their bond in DSOD was too adorable. It made me so happy to finally see somebody standing up for Ryou.

Normally I'd leave ship characters out of it, but I can't help it: Ishizu, Joey, and Duke are my top picks here.

I play around with different versions of what's Ryou's mentality can be like after Bakura is gone and what the lasting impact is. There's a lot of options there, which is why I don't write just one version of Ryou.

And then you realize, oh dear this man's a weirdo. An absolute weirdo. (He's the one that can see ghosts after all, there's a real connection over that.) (He gets two gifs because you need to understand what a weirdo he is.)

From UtaPri, we've got Shion from Heavens. He's a quiet shy boy on the surface with soulful eyes, but still waters run deep. I feel like they're both easy to underestimate.

And from Nanbaka, I can't really explain why, I always associated him with Seitarou Tanabata. Maybe because they share the spiky Christmas tree hair, idk. Maybe I just think they'd be good friends.

I know there's two main things that stick out to me

I hate filler. Always have. I dont know how every filler manages to do it, but they change, like... the personality of the main characters. Or their motives. Or their morals. They always seem to do things the writer/creator wouldn't make them do. Without fail. From YGO, to Inuyasha, to FMA, to, heck, even Game of Fucking Thrones, in which the show creators added more disturbing shit into the show and made actually redeemable book characters, into irredeemable show characters

2. Kaiba. I hate him in all the fillers. Like tho I knew Noah's arc, Doma and Grand Prix were all filler and I didn't like him in them, when I finally read the manga and Duelists Kingdom just flowed into Battle City and then into the Egyptian arc, it felt so much more solid. He felt so much more solid.

Just these dumb choices he'd make, or things he'd say, ESPECIALLY in Doma, they were just ridiculous. Like, isn't he supposed to be really smart???

I appreciated the fanservice. Fanservice to me is Kaiba/Joey in any form, and so him catching Joey before he fell is top tier fanservice. Kaiba buying a car for 500k and abandoning it 10 mins later, also top tier. Kaiba doing anything outside of dueling is fanservice Ima be honest, and in Doma, there was more of it than any other arc.

But it was just written badly. It kind of........... idk, screwed up some characters, and then couldn't exactly take it back.

And so it creates a new canon. You're either someone who fully acknowledges all of it (manga canon, anime filler canon, and anime dub canon) or you separate it and know the differences between each.

For a long time, Japanese!Kaiba and manga!Kaiba were the same to me, then dub!Kaiba was his own thing, and then there was filler I personally liked to pretend didn't exist.

I think DSOD perfectly brought it back. Kaiba was 100% Kaiba in that. And then the dub defo had an oddness to it since dub!Kaiba never acknowledged any of that "Egyptian fairytale nonsense", never even spoke the words "Millennium Puzzle" and then a movie comes and he's ALLLLL about it lmao

I take dub!Kaiba for what he is. He's fucking hilarious and his one liners were written by the greatest comedians.

But Kaiba at his most canon to me, is anything manga related transferred to anime (so absolutely no filler), and then DSOD.

If someone tries to say to me "but he said this in that one Noah's arc episode!!!" I'll be like "but that wasn't really him now was it"

First two have influences from YGO's art style, 3rd is a mix of both my usual style and influenced from YGO's art style, and the last one is closer to how I usually draw.

KaiYami (Kaiba/Yami) has been my fave YGO ship ever since I was a kid. I have such a huge soft spot for YGO DM…

I'm also into the YGO spin-off series, YGO GX and YGO 5Ds. I grew up with those three during my childhood.

Admittedly, YGO designs are really hard for me to draw cuz YGO designs are always so detailed and complex and sharp and angular and really geometric, too… And I'm not really used to drawing those kinds of designs. I'll be practicing more in the future!

I've seen many artists who draw YGO charas in their art style soften the shapes, so I'm still experimenting and trying to decide how I want to draw YGO charas.

I took some influences from the YGO art style and drew with sharper shapes and a sharper brush than I normally would, cuz it felt more fitting. I'm not as used to this brush yet.

I saw YGO EA KaiYami/AteKai artists represent them with the star and mushroom emojis cuz of their hair… I'm gonna cry LMFAOOO 😭😂

YGO: DSOD (Yu-Gi-Oh! The Dark Side of Dimensions) is a movie that takes place after the end of the YGO DM manga (after Atem passes onto the afterlife).

Kaiba's inability to move on from the lack of closure, and his gay brooding, yearning, and obsession…

It was co-written by Kazuki Takahashi, the YGO mangaka, so this movie is canon. Bless his heart. I hope he rests in peace 🙏

I know Kaiba/Yami's ship name is Prideshipping in YGO's EN fandom, and it fits them so well because of their pride as Duelists, and coincidentally Gay Pride, but that ship name is so long, I don't want to have to type that everytime. KaiYami it is! Kaiba/Yami also has a good ring to it.

KaiYami/KaiAte and YamiKai/AteKai are what EA ship fans use for them.

Me: Just gonna put this summary for my non-YGO mutuals and those who haven't seen YGO: DSOD so they can follow along with the rambles if they're curious

Also it's been a long time since I read YGO DM and watched YGO: DSOD so I'm mostly going off memory

3000 years ago, Atem was sealed away in the Millenium Puzzle and lost his memories and name. Mutou Yuugi solved the Millenium Puzzle, causing the spirit of an ancient Pharaoh, Yami Yuugi (true name: Atem), to take over his body to protect Yuugi and his friends. Eventually, others learn of Atem's existence.

Kaiba is the arch-rival of Yami Yuugi (Atem) who is hate obsessed with him after losing to him because he wants to get revenge and defeat him, thinking of him as his nemesis and rival.

(YGO DSOD: Summary)

YGO: DSOD takes place after the end of the YGO DM manga where Yami Yuugi (Atem) passed onto the afterlife. Kaiba, who was unable to find closure, and in his own way of mourning, was looking for 6 months to find a way to meet Atem again.

Kaiba Corporation (KC) develops Duel Links, a virtual reality system that links the consciousness of people around the world to play Duel Monsters.

At the start of the DSOD movie (or at least near the beginning), Kaiba recreates a perfect holographic reconstruction of Atem, down to Atem's deck, voice, appearance, and personality, but isn't satisfied because it's not the real Atem and lacks Atem's soul.

Kaiba has a whole ass space station developed, orders the Millennium Puzzle to be dug up from the excavation site it was buried in, and secures it in his space station for it to be reassembled with the highest quality tech, in the fastest time possible, heavily guarded (like encased in glass and surrounded by lasers and shit), in a safe place only he can access, to try and reach Atem in the afterlife.
